Order your Geder Role Stereotyping paper at affordable prices !What types of gender specific trends did you find for the five categories of toys?

•ConstructionI observed one construction toy and it was marketed to both girls and boys

•SportsI observed one sports toy and it was marketed without gender specific packaging

•Career/Role ModelI observed two career/role model toys that were marketed without gender specific packaging

•Domestic/Make BelieveI observed several make believe toys and they were marketed to both genders, although most items you could infer who they were targeting. For example, the Cap Gun and Uniform Walkie Talkie Set were probably intended to entice boys.

•DollsI observed several dolls and it appears that there are just as many dolls for young boys as there are for young girls. But as the age groups increase, the boy dolls become action heroes.

.Explain how this assignment contributed to your perceptions of gender role stereotyping by giving examples from what you observed.

I was aware of marketing stereotypes prior to this assignment, but this assignment helped me to further recognize marketing strategies that may not be as overt as others. For a traditional "boy" toy that both boys and girls may enjoy using, the advertisement will include both boys and girls. But they are sure to include more boys than girls. For toys that promoted cooking or cleaning, I did not see any males included in the advertisement.I do not blame the marketing executives for exploiting these stereotypes, because they did not create the stereotypes.Society as a whole is responsible for creating these stereotypes and will ultimately be responsible for changing them.I am sure that as society's views of the gender roles change, which the marketing strategies will also adapt to the change.

.Identify the commercials observed during children's television programs.Describe the types of products they were marketing. What types of messages do you think this is sending children?

The first commercial that I observed showed several dolls that were referred to as "My Scene" dolls. They showed little girls playing with them and then they cut to scenes of the animated dolls dancing at what appeared to be a club. The message in this commercial was about partying and having fun with these new age dolls.

The second commercial that I observed showed a couple of boys playing with Hot Wheels Die Cast Race Cars. The commercial showed how much fun you can have with the little cars and how fast they can be.This seemed to express the idea that boys should like shiny, fast cars.

The third commercial that I observed showed an animation of the Rugrats all in one room dancing to the latest music and then followed with a display of the dancing toys with a boy and girl playing with them. The Rugrats has a good gender mix and their message seems to promote harmony and no gender-specific stereotypes. This commercial was just about having fun with some cool new toy, no matter what gender you are (because they have several toys for both genders).

The fourth commercial involved Legos and had the typical stereotype of a boy construction some object. This commercial explicitly expressed the stereotype that boys should be able to build and create things.

The fifth commercial involved a Leap Pad product.Leap Pad is one of the leading sellers of children's educational toys and normally appeals to both genders, although the commercial that I observed only contained a little boy.

The sixth commercial was for a new Barbie. The Salon Surprise Barbie was target specifically at little girls. The doll has the latest hair attachments and styling tools, which feeds into the idea of girls wanting to style hair and create pretty new designs.Hair styling is traditionally a female trade.

The seventh commercial involved a Bob the Builder Toy Set.The message and gender stereotyping here was the same as for the Legos, that boys are natural builders.

The eighth commercial was for Power Wheels toy vehicles. The majority of the children shown were boys and this feeds into the idea that boys should love car and be good drivers. The girls' vehicles were pretty and it seemed to be more about style than the ability to drive.

The ninth commercial that I observed was for the Easy Bake Oven.Again, the stereotype that females enjoy cooking was present. The little girls were displayed as little homemakers that were exciting to be doing something that they were "naturally" good at.

The tenth commercial was for Bratz Dolls. These dolls promote getting dressed up and ready to go out.The stereotype that females should have a "Passion for Fashion" is present here.

The eleventh commercial that I viewed was for a Singing Starz Karaoke Machine. In this situation, they used a young girl to market the product but did not dress her up to fit any stereotype. This commercial did not appear to be targeting a specific gender, just the average child.

The last commercial that I observed was for Street Flyers Retractable In-Line Skates.A young boy was used in this commercial to show the male stereotype that boys should be involved in or at least attracted to exciteme

. The inevitable events predestined by this force.

Macbeth is the story of a driven ambition that ignores moral consideration. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth kill more and more people in a frenzied attempt to take and protect their ill-gotten power as rulers of Scotland. This drive of ambition became the fuel to run his life.

Macbeth is a man, like all men, who is troubled by his conflict between conscience and loyalty. He suffers the pain of murderous ambitious. Shakespeare makes us feel Macbeth's pain and anguish. Macbeth allows himself to be led to evil, initially by the witches predictions, and then by his wifes provoking. Before he meets the witches he is content with his position in life. He is loyal to the king. He is gallant in his battle against the rebels. In a report of Macbeths victory over the rebels, a sergeant emphasizes Macbeths courage. Even when it looks like fate is smiling on the enemy, brave Macbeth…well he deserves that name…. Disdaining Fortuneplunges fearlessly into battle and wins the victory. At this point if Macbeth had any ambition as to glory and power, would he have not allied him self with the rebels?Custom Essays on fate

It is only when he begins to believe that the Crown may be within his reach that his ambition grows. But his ambition is tempered by his sense of duty and loyalty. His internal conflict is deep and haunting. He cannot bring himself to act. It is his wife's goading that pushes him to commit his crimes.

If the witches prophecies are good, he asks himself, why do I yield to that suggestion / Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair / And make my seated heart knock at my ribs, / Against

the use of nature?Suggestion meaning temptation, so Macbeth is asking himself why he feels himself giving into temptation, especially a temptation that makes his heart race and his hair stand on end. Then Macbeth pulls himself together, at least to a certain extent. But he later remarks to himself that if the witches prophecies are right, he wont have to do a thing to become king. As he says, If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me,… Without my stir. Not only that, but Come what come may, … Time and the hour runs through the roughest day , In other words, the thought of murdering his king has Macbeth all shaken up, but he hopes hell get over it.

Is his wife the instrument of his ambition? Or did he tell his wife of his meeting of the witches knowing that she would encourage him to perform his evil deeds. In his letter to his wife about the witches prophecies, Macbeth writes, This have I thought good to deliver thee, my dearest partner of greatness, that thou mightst not lose the dues of rejoicing, by being ignorant of what greatness is promised thee . He knows that his partner will like the idea of being Queen and seems to offer the news as a kind of present.

Lady Macbeth does indeed like the idea of being Queen, but shes afraid that her husband is too full o the milk of humankindness, To catch the nearest way.But shes sure she has no such problem, and shes eager for the chance to make him see things her way. Holding the letter, and speaking to Macbeth , even though he hasnt arrived yet, she says, Hie thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear; And chastise with the valour of my tongue,All that impedes

thee from the golden round, . Some might say that shes going to nag him, but I think she believes that she is going to empower him to reach his rightful station. She will work to make him ashamed of everything in him that prevents him from being evil enough to be king. I think Macbeth knows that alone he dose not have the strength to do the evil, he knows his wife will force him to do the crime. In the short run this will allow him to ease is conscience and fulfill his ambitious deed. Macbeth is a warrior and has killed men, but hes never murdered anyone. Macbeths fear is normal, murder, or even the thought of doing a murder is against his character.

Another comparison may be that of Adam and Eve to the reasoning of Macbeth's actions. Theway this works into the story is that Macbeth is like Adam and is willing to do what it take but wants to put the blame on Lady Macbeth who is like Eve. In the Bible the story goes that Eve tempted by the snake eats of the fruit and then tempts Adam. Say Macbeth telling the Lady Macbeth the premonitions of the witches, this my mean nothing but the comparison with the Bible begins. When Lady Macbeth hears of this she becomes tempted like Eve. Then she influences Macbeth there by tempting him like Eve did Adam. This shows that those turn of events compare to the bible as well as the fact that Macbeth is in need of someone to blame for his action.

The effects of Macbeth and his ambition lead him to his short rise and his down fall. If he would have been patient he would have had the chance to become a great leader. Due to his impatient and fear of Banquo's children becoming the new rulers his ability to think clearly was fogged and would become haunted by his actions. This led to his delusions and added to his ambitions. The ambitions he had were his character flaws and led to his ruin and the rise of a

newking. Not only did he lose his thrown he lost his life and the name of Macbeth became tarnished as a result of his actions.

161 one of the world's most feared years. Russia and the United States of America are head-to-head in the Cold War at its zenith. Both superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, armed with nuclear strength and willingness to use it, threaten the world with great ferocity. In November of 160, the United States sent the Soviet Union a submarine vessel called George Washington. With the reputation of the Soviet Union endangered, the Russians hurry to produce a devastating weapon of their own, the Widowmaker. It was called the "Widowmaker", because it turned so many wives into widows. This devastating story was made into a movie, replaying the scenes. Harrison Ford plays Captain Alexi Vostrikov, the replacement captain of Mikhail Polenin, played by Liam Neeson.

This movie is based on the true story of K-1. Its story has been hidden for thirty years, during the existence of the Soviet Union. The story itself is quite extraordinary, how the two captains manage to keep the vessel in one piece while it was threatening to make a nuclear reaction. The story has a twist as the movie nears the end. The crew are dying. K-1 desperately needs help, which the motherland cannot give. Their communication with Russia breaks, leaving the Widowmaker homeless. The reactor was melting with the heat of the nuclear fission, and the crew came up with a barely workable plan. They would leak the ship, only a small amount, just enough to cool her down to get back to the motherland. This shows great bravery of the crew, and their efforts to save what they had lost. In the middle of their havoc, the Americans have spotted them, and offered to help. If the Russians had accepted their help, they would all have been arrested for treason. If not, they would have all died of the explosion, leaving nuclear radiation behind them. Neither of the crew's choices was very appealing. However, the crew managed to get by without the U.S.' help, sacrificing seven people. This shows great intrepidity from them.

The Widowmaker story took place in 161, during the time of the Cold War. Out of the ashes of World War II, two great nations rosse. The Soviet Union, the mighty communist country dominated by one of the worlds most powerful armies, and the United States, great power of the western nations and worlds economic leader. After the fall of Nazi Germany, both nations, along with Britain and France, competed for the grand prize of Central Europe Berlin. This was only the beginning of uneasy tensions. The Soviets hunger for nuclear knowledge coupled with their thirst for world domination did not mix well with the democratic society of the United States. When the Soviets detonated their first atomic bomb in 14, tensions between the two countries began to reach a high point. Both super power nations now had atomic weapons, and a great despise of one another.

Help with essay on K-19: The Widowmaker

This was the beginning of the Cold War. This confrontation was called Cold because both nations did not fight in actual full combat. This war, which lasted for a time span of almost forty years, was a war fought with politics, espionage, propaganda and economics. This style of warfare occurred because both sides feared nuclear annihilation. However, nuclear weapons with more destructive power and greater launch capability were created by both nations over the course of time. Limited wars, such as the Korean War and the Vietnamese War, were fought between Communist nations and the western powers. The world did come close to actual nuclear war several times, most notably the Cuban Missile Crisis. Many of historys greatest events and people came out of the Cold War. And because of those important people (Kennedy, Gorbachev), nuclear war was narrowly averted several times, and eventually the Cold War came to an end.

The main characters of this movie are played by Harrison Ford, and Liam Neeson, both heroes from the Star Wars Saga (Smuggler Han Solo and Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn). Harrison Ford played Captain Alexi Vostrikov, who took Captain Mikhail Polenin's place, performed by Liam Neeson. One would be astonished on how well Harrison Ford plays a Russian. His accent is extraordinary, and contradicts to his usual, American accent, filled with slang. Harrison Ford portrayed an entirely different person through this movie, playing a stubborn, strict, and sometimes unreasonable captain of the sub-marine, rather than a lazy, snob of a thief. Liam Neeson is the calm, co-operative, and friendly second-in-command of the vicious vessel. He knows his crew personally, and won much love from his crew. Neeson's appearance and personality helps him greatly in his role of captain Polenin. His stare, either warm or cold depending on the situation, is his key to excellence in the movie. Both actors performed in excellence, giving the movie more life that it would have had without them.

K-1 The Widowmaker was a fascinating movie, capturing the mood of the event, remaking the scene exactly, with able actors to playing difficult roles and characters of the story. Kathryn Bigelow indeed did a great job in reviving one of the most devastating events in our history.

The Bill of Rights is an important aspect in society today. The Bill of Rights plays a key role in how we live as individuals. The Bill of Rights sets a standard of living, especially with the implementation of Amendment I.Amendment I states "Congress, shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievance. Since the establishment of The Bill of Rights (Amendment I), there have been many controversial issues that have arisen.More specifically, issues regarding the reality of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the freedom of the press in our society today.

Freedom of Speech has been over the years a debatable topic. Many people interpret freedom of speech as its' literal meaning, which is the right to be able to speak your mind on any topic or issue. The question of debate here is whether it is ok for one to communicate or express their feelings in any form of text. Today we see many cases in which many citizens argue their right to freedom of speech. Such cases come about when one's reputation can be at stake. Legally it is against the law to orally communicate or to make false statements that may be injurious to a person's reputation. That type of offense is known as slander. The opposition to slander is libel. This form of falsification occurs in publications such as print media, signs, and written documents that can pose harm to a

person's reputation. To say that we as citizens have the right to say what ever we so desire is a stretch of the pure definition, but as long as it is not utilized with malicious intent.

Freedom of religion is another debatable topic that is supported in the First Amendment. The United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (148) states "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance. We as citizens have the right to determine our own faith and creed according to our own conscience. As individuals we have the ability to express our own religious beliefs in worship, teaching and in practice, as well as to broadcast it to a social environment. With these rights are they true in every aspect of daily life?If so, then why can't we have religious prayer in the public school system? Why has society segregated religious teaching only in religious institutions?Another question that stirs controversy is religious organizations otherwise known as cults. One religious cult that has been prevalent for many years is the Klu Klux Klan (K.K.K.).This religious affiliation has been known to openly state their distaste for blacks and the jewish community. Many horrible crimes have been committed by these religious organization, yet this religious cult is accepted by certain individuals in our society.

Freedom of press will forever be in debate. With censorship playing a big role now in society, the question is whether or not we do have freedom of the press. The answer to

That question is no.We as citizens in this country do not have an absolute freedom of the

press. If this were a true statement, then then print media would be out of hand.Media publication would have the capability of printing false information to the public.Fortunately for society's sake, most publications do not follow that guideline.Freedom of press also has restrictions on what can be said on certain topics.Topics such as the United States Government.Media publications have to be very careful of what is being printed when it has to do with the government. One issue that has been focused around the media is thebelieve that the government controls the media and what information is released to the public eye.If this is true, we as citizens only see the spin that the government wants us to see, and not what is the truth. But this is known to happen in many countries, not just the United States. Many other struggling countries have the media as their backbone, without it they wouldn't be able to sway public opinion.

Interpreting the definition of the First Amendment, we as citizens are guaranteed six rights the right to religion, speech, press, assembly, association, and petition. Collectively, the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights is supposed to protect what is known as freedom of expression. All of what is protected in the First Amendment is put at stake when the media gets involved. As reality sets in, do we as individuals actually maintain the true absolute rights written before us in the Bill of Rights? With many controversial and legal issues that have arisen in society today, regarding Amendment I, the rationalization is that the First Amendment protects only the good of the public and is not solely concentrated on individual freedom.

Deviant behavior refers to behavior that does not conform to norms, does not meet with the expectations of a group or of society as a whole. Shortly after birth, children begin to have experience with others. They are taught what he or she should and should not do, what is good or bad, and what is right or wrong. Learning habits that conform to the customs and traditions of the groups into which the child is born develops a system of values. These values provide justification and motivation for wanting to do certain types of things that are approved or for wanting to refrain from behavior that is disapproved.

Thus conformity results from a system of internal controls or restraints developed within the individual during the process of socialization. Besides internal controls, conformity is induced through external mechanisms--pressures to meet the expectations of others. Each role carries with it a set of rights as well as duties to be carried out in our relationships with others.

Failing to meet the expectations associated with each role usually results in the application of sanctions. The form and severity of sanctions vary, depending on the type of group and on the degree of importance assigned to the fulfillment of certain expectations. The state represents the final authority within society and possesses a monopoly over the use of coercion to maintain order, to apply a variety of penalties for behavior that violates society's laws. There are about 780,000 local, state, and federal law enforcement officers employed in some 0,000 law enforcement agencies throughout the US. In the criminal justice systems, there are more than 16,000 criminal courts handling about 1 million criminal cases annually; there are also approximately ,000 corrections agencies. Aboutmillion people are currently on probation in the US, approximately 400,000 in jails, and over 880,000 state and federal prison inmates. Correctional agencies employ nearly a half million people at an estimated total cost more than $60 billion a year.

Reliance on formal authority for the maintenance of order and social control tends to increase as societies become larger, more industrialized, and more urbanized. More informal social control mechanisms characterize of smaller and less complex societies.

Even with various mechanisms for the maintenance of social control and conformity, deviance can be found throughout human history and in every society, with both negative and positive consequences. On the negative side, large-scale deviance may harm group stability; induce distrust and ill will; drain a society of important human and economic resources. Additionally, if deviance was to become the norm, it might weaken people's faith in and conformity to social norms and values.

Deviance may also have positive consequences. It teaches people what are acceptable social behaviors; thus, even the most highly disciplined and regimented, have--and need--social deviants. Deviance may strengthen group norms and values and reinforce their commitment to the group and its standards. Deviance may be both a sign and source of needed social change.

The Relativity of Deviance - Deviant behavior is behavior viewed as deviant and the degree to which these behaviors are considered deviant change over time. Consider homosexuality, smoking by teenagers and women, the sale of patent medicines containing opium derivatives, drug use--particularly that of marijuana and LSD.

Place - Behaviors considered deviant vary from one society to another and also according to geographic area within the same society.

Subcultures - Complex modern societies are usually composed of a multitude of subcultures based on class, occupation, race, and nationality. Each of these subcultures is aware of and conforms to many of the norms and values of the general culture. They maintain distinct values and norms that tend to distinguish their members from the larger society. Because different subcultures hold at least some different norms, behavior considered deviant also varies from subculture to subculture. What is seen as conformity to the norms of the subculture may be viewed as deviant from the norms of the larger society.

Deviant Behavior as Disapproved Behavior - Reactions of others to deviance range from social approval to severe disapproval. Certain types of behavior may constitute approved deviation such as qualities or achievements that far exceed the standards and expectations of others. When sociologists speak of deviant behavior, they are concerned with behavior that deviates from norms and expectations of others in a disapproved direction more that with behaviors that constitute overconformity to its norms.

Deviant Behavior and Social Tolerance - Reactions to deviance also vary by intensity. Each particular norm has a tolerance limit, the degree to which norm violations are tolerated or suppressed by a group (show overhead #0 "Attitudes Toward Homosexuality"). One's position within a group or society influences how others react to and judge one's behavior.

Deviant behavior refers to those human acts that are socially defined by the group or society as deviant relevant to the norms of the group.

The career I have chosen for this project is Architecture. A building architect to be more specific. The career has many characteristics of work that I wish to pursue as I grow up. The main idea is thinking of new, and visually nice designs to grab your client's attention for them to buy your design. It also is a job were mathematics and now computer training is needed. The nature of work of an Architect is basically the design of building and other structures. The design of the building must not only be creative and what the client wants, but their is many different regulations and rules to follow to make the building affordable, safe, and proper size for it to fit in its specifically picked out plantation. First the Architect and the client must discuss the basic idea of the project, giving him basic ideas like size, shape, number of rooms and budget. The Architect will then make blue prints or drawing of his ideas, then present them to the client or clients who he is working for, to see if they like his idea and if they have any comments or suggestions that they would like to get met. If the clients like that idea of the building, the Architect must then draw final construction plans which show the building's general appearance and details for it's construction. Such details as the air-conditioning, ventilation and electrical systems to name a few. Architects now sometimes turn to computer-aided design and drafting or (CADD) only a few Architects will plan all their work out by hand anymore. The working conditions of the Architect are pretty lenient; they like to work in comfortable environments, some times at home or an office to make up their designs. This is mainly why I want to pursue this profession, because of the liberal, flexible use of your time. But most of their time is spent going to their client's offices or working with other architect. Also sometimes they will go to the construction site of where their design is being built to see how things are running and to make sure they built it as he wanted or to answer any questions. Architects some times have to work long hours and weekends to meet specific deadlines, which can start to be very stressful. The training and education for architects isn't any thing outrageous. All states require an architect to be licensed before he/she starts to make their own designs. Before they are licensed they are called intern-architects, basically just helping prepare construction designs or assisting in the design. This training period gives them basic work experience while they prepare for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). A licensed architect is required to take all legal responsibility for all their work. There are several types of professional degrees in architecture. The majority of all architecture degrees are from a five-year Bachelor of Architecture programs. Some schools offer a two-year Master of Architecture program for students with a professional undergraduate degree in architecture. It is very helpful for the architect to have artistic and drawing ability to visually show their ideas to clients, but it is not an absolute requirement. Good communication skills, the ability to work alone or as a part of a team are also important as well as creativity are also important qualities to have for any one who wishes to pursue a career in architecture. The job outlook for an architect is average. Because of so many businesses' expanding and population consistently growing, there is a growing demand for new building, houses, developments and other structures of that sort. But prominent architects may face competition especially if the numbers of architectural degrees stay at or increase above its current level. Many people are interested in the field, and the numbers of applicants sometimes exceed the number of available jobs. Although the needed renovation of old-buildings, especially in urban areas where space for new building is becoming limited, is expected to give many job opportunities for architects. The earnings for architects start at around $7,000 for intern-architects. Licensed architects with three to five years of experience have an expected earning of around $,000. Architects with eight to ten years of experience, but do not work for a firm earn around $45, 000. Partners of firms earn from $75,000 to $100,000, although some partners for larger firms earn quite more. After all the information I have gathered about the field of architecture I still think I would like to take this up as a career. The job opportunities are small in some places, but here in the Bay Area it should be very plentiful. This career will be something that seems to be challenging and rewarding. Just imagine the possibilities a career in architecture could bring. For instance, one could build his or her fully customized dream house one day, loaded with one's own personal touches. Another benefit would be a very flexible daily schedule. These are just some examples of the benefits this job can bring. I believe that I am a creative and artistic person. I love to build scale models and I also love to work in the area of building construction. With all these skills combined, it will be to my advantage to be an architect, giving me a very good chance to be extremely successful in this firm.

Crane showed multiple examples in Maggie that dealt with courage by both Maggie and Jimmie. This book shows how that life is in the slums for Maggie and Jimmie but they both have the audacity to wake up every day and deal with their problems at home. Maggie and Jimmie have the role of trying to live everyday and trying to escape from it. But that is impossible for them because it is like that everyday for them and their mother is an alcoholic and that makes it harder for them to survive. This story ties in with Maggie and Jimmie struggling for survival and trying to get through everyday.

Jimmie had been in many rough instances where it involves fighting with other people or himself getting beaten by his father. He has the courage to stand up for himself and fight his own battles and that shoes courage very well. The little champion of Rum Alley stumbled precipitately down the other side. His coat had been torn to shreds in a scuffle and his hat was gone. He had bruises on twenty parts of his body, and blood was dripping from the cut on his head. His wan features looked like those of a tiny insane demon. (Crane 1) He had bruises and cuts all over his little body and for him that age to be fighting, that is courageous.

In revenge, he resolved never to move out of the way of anything, until

formidable circumstances, or a much larger man than himself forced him into

it. (Crane 15) This shows great courage because Jimmie does not move out of the way where violence is being held. Instead of trying to seek safety he fights for himself because he has pride. He has stuck up for himself by turning to violence and he cannot stick up for himself at home because his parents would beat him. This is the only answer where he can stick up for himself and fight.

Jimmie and Maggie are surrounded by filth and drunkenness of their parents. They are not what you would consider "The Brady Bunch" because they have many family problems that tie in with the alcoholic mother. Maggie has to deal with this everyday and she has the courage to wake up to this everyday and try not to change it. Her mother drank whisky all Friday morning. With lurid face and tossing hair she cursed and destroyed furniture all Friday afternoon. When Maggie came home at half-past six her mother ay asleep amid the wreck of chairs and a table. Fragments of various household utensils were scattered about the floor. She had vented some phase of drunken fury upon the lambrequin. It lay in a bedraggled heap in the corner. (0) This shows how Maggie and Jimmie have the courage to wake up to this and try to survive with this disgusting filth of reality. In other terms, Maggie is known to be on the streets or at the bars because that is where she can try and cope with her problems. In the middle of the floor lay his mother asleep. In one corner of the room his fathers limp body hung across the seat of a chair. (15)

After the father dies, the only father figure that is left is Jimmie. He has to be the father and take care of the family like the father did. It is a little hard for him to do it because he is still a child and it is already enough responsibility to take care of himself. He is still learning how to survive on his own without any parental supervision never mind taking care of other people. Jimmie grew large enough to take the vague position if head of the family. As incumbent of that office, he stumbled upstairs late at night, as his father had done before him. He reeled about the room, swearing at his relations, or went to sleep on the floor."(45)

As it had been concluded above, Crane presents many instances of courage and is showed through Maggie and Jimmie. They have the courage to wake up everyday and deal with this torment of their home life and the fact that their mother is a crazed alcoholic and the father is physically violent towards the family. For them living in this kind of environment is very hard for them to survive in. But they help each other to survive and unfortunately at the end, Maggie is either turned by suicide or an anonymous person killed her. But many can make a conclusion that she had killed herself because she could not take how her life was anymore. Therefore she killed herself and she thought that was the only way to escape from her problems, which would make things better for her but not the rest of the family.

Courage, it would seem, is nothing less than the power to overcome danger, misfortune, fear, injustice, while continuing to affirm inwardly that life with all its sorrows is good; that everything is meaningful even if in a sense beyond our understanding; and that there is always tomorrow.

-Dorothy Thompson

As defined in our text, (Schermerhorn et al 147) "motivation refers to the individual forces that account for the direction, level, and persistence of a person's effort expended at work." Motivation is a vital tool in any organization. Motivation is used as a means to stir up employees to cause them to excel in their position or performance. The many different theories of motivation can be divided into three expansive categories to include Reinforcement, Content, and Process theory. Our paper will focus on four aspects of the Content theory as each team member analyzes their own organization. Content theory suggests that different needs motivate diverse individuals to behave in a certain manner. Motivation results as defined in the Content theory as an employees attempt to satisfy their needs in the workplace.

Herzberg Theory

Gawal, (17) states American businesses have long embraced and believed in practicing the Herzberg and Maslow behavioral theories. Herzberg was able to construct his theory based on essentially asking the employee two questions. The first was to think of a time when they felt really good about the job and why. The second question was to think of a time when they felt bad about their job and why. This enabled him to create the Herzberg theory, which states that there are two dimensions to job satisfaction to include motivation and hygiene.

Hygiene issues should be addressed first, in order to create an atmosphere conducive to the employees' happiness. These factors include company policy, supervision, interpersonal relations, working conditions, and salary. Without the presence of these factor employees could feel job dissatisfaction. However, their presence does not always ensure that the employee will be motivated or satisfied. Herzberg was then able to determine that the actual motivator were factors that enriched a person's job. Gawal, (17) suggests the employee needs to have achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility, and advancement. These factors are vital to how the employee feels about job satisfaction.

Cheap Custom Essays on Motivation

The Federal Government offers a variety of motivational processes that can be implemented by the employee and used to create job satisfaction. A Federal Equal Opportunity Recruitment Program (FEORP) has been created to allow a more diversified workforce. This enables underrepresented groups the opportunity to achieve positions that otherwise might not be available to them. Managers and supervisors have a specific allotted budget at their disposal in which they can recognize and award those employees on their performance.

Certainly, some positions require more responsibility than others do but no matter what the position; the employee is required to carry out their duties. This allows the employee to feel a certain responsibility in their tasks because individuals are depending on them to perform. The work itself is based on the employee's ambition. If the employee is exemplary in his /her performance, they will be given additional work, which in turn will motivate that individual to tackle the next task. I believe this work ethic is only true in highly motivated individuals.

The Federal Government off such a variety of jobs, one could pursue almost anything. The government allows individuals to continue their education. This enables the employee the ability to transcend his/her current position into a promotion. There is always room for advancement in the government but one must continually be looking to better themselves.

In the Federal Government, all five of the Hygiene factors are addressed. Before an employee reports to work, they must first check in with Human Resources. At this time, they are given an employee handbook and instructed on policies and procedures.

The employee then reports to duty and is introduced to their supervisor. At this time, they are informed of the organization hierarchy and the reporting structure along with the information about their direct manager. Human Resources has recently developed the "buddy" system. Within the first week, the employee is introduced to their buddy. This individual escorts the new employee through the building to point out areas of interest and introduces to his/her coworkers.

Working conditions are always monitored and can be compared to any customary office. At the government's expense, the employee may have a heater or fan installed in their cubicle. While this may seem ridiculous and an unnecessary expense to some individuals most employees feel that this is their right to favorable working conditions.

The salary an individual wants to achieve is always at their disposal with either extra training or through continued education. The employee is empowered with the knowledge of what skills they need to possess in order to attain a certain salary. It is up to the individual to implement goals on how it can be achieved.

I believe the government offers the motivational tools for any employee to achieve workplace productivity. The five motivational factors of the Herzberg theory are present in my workplace, which enables the employee to receive long-term job satisfaction.

There is a legend Gabriel Garcia Marquez likes to tell about the writing of his most famous novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude. He claims that he wrote the book barricaded in his study in Mexico, after receiving a vision. One day, while he and his wife and children were in their car driving to Acapulco, he saw that he had to tell [his] story the way his grandmother used to tell hers, and that [he] was to start from that afternoon in which a father took his child to discover ice. He made an abrupt U-turn on the highway, the car never made it to Acapulco, and he locked himself in his study. Fifteen months later, he emerged with the manuscript, only to meet his wife holding a stack of bills. They traded papers, and she put the manuscript in the mail to his publisher.

Like everything Marquez writes, there is some truth and much fiction in this tale. The truth in the tale is that One Hundred Years of Solitude is a very personal book for the author. It would not have been written if he had not experienced the childhood he had. Marquez grew up with his maternal grandparents in Aracataca, Colombia. His grandparents were cousins who moved to Aracataca from Riohacha at the end of the War of a Thousand Days (18-10), a few years before a leafstorm. Marquezs childhood anecdotes tell of a big house full of ghosts, conversations in code, and relatives who could foretell their own deaths. It was also a house filled with guests and social events, shaded by almond trees and bursting with flowers. When Marquezs grandfather died, Marquez was sent to live with his parents. In his grandfathers absence, his grandmother, who was blind, could no longer keep up the house. It fell into a state of ruin, and red ants destroyed the trees and flowers. Also early in his childhood, Marquez witnessed the massacre of striking banana workers‹workers at a plantation named Macondo‹at a train station. The government made every attempt to block information from the public and pacify the foreign plantation owners. Marquez was horrified, and even more horrified when he reached high school and learned that the event had been deleted from his history textbook.

Careful readers of One Hundred Years of Solitude will recognize many of these elements in the book; there is no doubt that if Marquez had not grown up in Aracataca and had a keen ear, the novel would not exist. On one hand, the context for the book is Marquezs own personal nostalgia‹for childhood, for his grandparents, for a big house filled with ghosts and laughter. On the other hand, the context for the book is Marquezs political beliefs and the oft-brutal realities of growing up in a particularly tumultuous developing country. Growing up in Colombia, which has a long and tragic socioeconomic history, Marquez learned about politics and economics early on. In his conversations with other Latin American writers‹the Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes was one of the writers who gave Marquez extensive feedback and advice on the early chapters of Solitude‹he developed his own theoretical views about writing and politics. He often claims The first duty of a writer is to write well‹implying that writing must not be polemical‹but there is no doubt that the economic history of Latin America, which is a history of inequality and exploitation, has had a crucial impact on all of his writing.

Marquezs approach to writing One Hundred Years of Solitude‹combining his own memories and imagination with focused aesthetics and an eye for the tragic history of his country‹has had an immeasurable impact on writers of color worldwide. Coming at the time it did, in the midst of a boom in Latin American writing, it was immediately recognized as one of the finest, if not the finest, offerings from that period. More importantly, it crossed every boundary to becoming an international bestseller and worldwide phenomenon. Even Latin American writers who found fault with it could not deny that it had directed the attentions of the literary world to Latin America. The book was an immediate commerical and critical success when it appeared in 167, and has since been translated into 6 languages and sold millions of copies worldwide. Order Custom 100 years of solitude paper

Other writers of color from different traditions followed in Marquezs footsteps to draw attention to their own countries and struggles. As critic Regina James says, Solitude represented the marginal and the primitive, yet it neither adopted the superior perspective of the Western anthropologist nor imitated an imagined, alien innocenceŠ.many writers recognized their own ambivalent and difficult relationships with a traditional culture. In much of the world, the unimaginably old coexists with the unbearably newŠFor writers conscious of straddling two cultures, nostalgia for a simpler, primitive past vies with wonder at the persistence of habits of thought, patterns of life, and modes of belief that surely ought to be extinct, mere harmless fossils. Garcia Marquez turned puzzlement or outrage into ironic wonder, and he enhanced the strangeness of the realŠ Today, we see his influence in such celebrated writers as Americas Toni Morrison, India (and England)s Salman Rushdie, and Trinidads V.S. Naipaul.

lifestyle.Author Peter Cox, whose previous best-sellers are Linda

McCartneys Home Cooking and Why You Dont Need Meat, lambasts both the meat

industry and the medical establishment at the press conference scheduled for

11.05am in the Rutherford Room, Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre,

Westminster.

Smoking kills 111,000 people every year, says Cox.[1]But that falls into

second place behind the 14,000 annual deaths which the evidence suggests could

be prevented by a vegetarian diet.

Coxs calculations make use of recent scientific results produced by the Oxford

study into vegetarianism [], and a similar project in Germany [].Both

studies show that vegetarians slash their risk of cancer and heart disease by

approximately 40% compared to meat-eaters.Heart disease is the leading cause

of death in the UK, accounting for 1 indeaths among men and 1 in 4 among

women.Together, both diseases kill 5,000 Britons every year.If more

people were vegetarian, says Cox, this figure could be slashed by 14,000.

Were being failed, believes Cox, by our drug-based medical system which

produces doctors who have little knowledge or interest in preventative

nutrition; by over-cautious health charities who too often pursue a counsel of

perfection; and by the machinations of the meat industry itself, which has in

the past demonstrably sought to quash healthy eating advice.

Coxs conclusions are backed by a survey of the attitudes of health groups

towards vegetarianism, some of whom, he says, appear to regard it as some kind

of dietary perversion.Some key findings

The Imperial Cancer Research Fund stated yesterday There is currently

no evidence which suggests [that a vegetarian diet greatly reduces the

incidence of certain cancers] is totally proven. [4]

Comments CoxThe concept of total proof is a counsel of perfection. No

doubt cigarette manufacturers also claim that there is no total proof that

smoking causes cancer. If we wait until total proof is available before

taking action, well be waiting for ever.

The Cancer Research Campaign stated yesterday The evidence that meat

may cause cancer is not sufficiently strong to advocate a vegetarian diet for

cancer prevention. However, the major European study, EPIC will, over the

next few years, throw light on this and other controversies surrounding diet

and cancer. [5]

Comments CoxWhether the evidence is strong enough is a matter of opinion.

What they should be looking at are the risks and benefits involved. What are

the risks of advocating more widespread vegetarianism?Trivial. What are the

benefits? The many studies in my book show that the benefits can be massive.

I dont believe we need yet another studywe need prudent actionnow.

The British Dietetic Association stated yesterdayScientific data

suggests that vegetarians as a group have a lower incidence of chronic disease,

particularly coronary heart disease and some cancers.Vegetarian diets tend to

correspond more closely to the healthy eating ideal in terms of fat,

carbohydrate, dietary fibre and the increased intake of fruits and vegetables.

[6]

Comments CoxIt is unfortunateindeed, tragicthat more organisations dont

share the B.D.A.s views.I suspect this reflects the traditional lack of

interest in diet and healthy eating evinced by many sections of the medical

community.

The British Heart Foundation stated yesterdayAn investigation into

the health of vegetarians [has shown that] vegetarians suffered half as many

deaths from coronary heart disease than meat eaters and there was a 0%

reduction in overall mortality including a 40% reduction in cancer deaths.

These important findings were not affected by any other factors such as body

weight, smoking habits or socio economic status.Meat eating is not

considered harmfulVegetarian diets may contain some factors that are

cardio-protectivemore work is progressing to try to identify specifically

the dietary components responsible for this benefit.Meantime, the advice is

to adopt many of the attributes of the vegetarian diet, particularly in

countries with a high prevalence of heart disease. [7]

Comments CoxA classic. The search for that magic ingredient that makes

the vegetarian lifestyle so healthy will probably never be resolved, but it

perfectly illustrates how the medical establishment thinks. If they know that

vegetarianism is more healthy, why dont they actively promote vegetarianism?

Contrary to received wisdom, there are indeed studies (cited in the

Encyclopedia) which show that meat consumption is an independent risk factor in

the aetiology of several important diseases.Advising people to eat a diet

which has many of the attributes of vegetarianism without actually being

vegetarian is downright confusing and liable to fail.

The Health Education Authority stated yesterdayVegetarian diets can

be healthy, but of course, following a vegetarian diet does not necessarily

mean your diet will be healthy. [8]

Comments CoxPositively earth-shattering.And so lucid.

Willy Loman and Holden Caulfield are two very different people.Willy is an old, experienced, hard-working man, while Holden is a young, 17 year old boy, in between childhood and adulthood.Despite their many differences, Willy and Holden have an uncanny similarityThey both go through an emotional rollercoaster, and many problems lead to their eventual breakdown. The characters of Willy and Holden are the same, in that both of them are "phonies", they both make sacrifices for someone they care about, and they both have and carry unrealistic dreams. These characteristics of the two characters allow us to see how the two very different personalities of Willy Loman and Holden Caulfield, are very much the same.

Holden and Willy are both phonies.Although Holden expresses his hatred for anyone and anything that is phony, he is a phony himself. He is constantly lying to avoid his problems, especially when speaking with adults. He plays off his fear of talking to adults by either saying that they are phony, or that he doesn't feel like talking to them; the best example of this being his avoidance of calling Jane Gallagher, because he "doesn't feel like talking" to her mother.

Willy, like Holden, is also living a lie.Throughout his career as a salesman, he has lied about how successful he really is, claiming he is one of the best salesmen for his firm.He states that he is well liked and recognized all over New England, to try and impress Linda and his children. His lies go so far, that he even deludes himself into thinking that he is a successful salesman. However, this is far from the truth. The reality is that Willy is and always has been nothing more than an average salesman, struggling to make ends meet.If he were as good as he claims, he would not have been put on commission, and would not have had to borrow money from Charley to pay the bills.

Write your Comparing Willy Loman and Holden Caulfield research paper

Willy and Holden are also similar in that they both care deeply for one particular person, and make sacrifices for them.In Holden's case, this person is Phoebe.Although she is Holden's sister, he protects and cares for her as if he were her father. He wants to protect her from the world around her.He realizes her innocence as a child, and doesn't want her to be hurt by the cruelties of the adult world.Holden doesn't want Phoebe to go through what he did; having to grow up too fast, and facing the reality of the adult world before his time.He ends up making a sacrifice for Phoebe, by deciding not to run away from home, in order to protect her.

In Willy's case, the person he has great care for is Biff.Willy idolized Biff since he was a child, and cares for Biff.He carries a lot of guilt for being unfaithful to Linda, and realizes that Biff is the only person that knows of his secret. He had supported Biff when he was a child, and the fact that Biff was a failure shatters Willy, and in a way insults him. However, in the end, Willy realizes that Biff loves him, and makes the ultimate sacrifice; Willy kills himself to provide Biff with money to start his new life.

Willy and Holden are also similar in that they both have unrealistic dreams.Holden dreams of living in a peaceful and perfect world, where there are no problems, and everyone is socially conscience. His dreams are unrealistic because no matter what, there will always be problems and conflicts in the world.Holden tries to set an example, by acting kindly to everyone, and even showing compassion towards those he dislikes (Ackley), but he has to realize that his goals and dreams are unachievable.

Willy's dreams were to be well liked by everyone, and to be successful, which meant being respected by everyone he knew.Willy also wanted his sons, Happy and Biff to be successful. His dreams failed because as a salesman, instead of selling the product, Willy tried to sell himself. He also deluded himself, along with Linda's loyal support, into thinking he was a success, and that he was well liked. He didn't realize that Happy and Biff had different dreams than he did, and therefore they always upset him for not being successful. In the end, Willy realized his dreams were unachievable, and decided to make a sacrifice to help his son fulfill his dreams.

Although the two characters can be considered opposites to each other in many senses, they are in many ways the same. They both suffer from extreme emotional turmoil in their downward spiral, until they finally hit rock-bottom and collapse.Willy finally achieves some salvation in the end, knowing that Biff loves him, and making a sacrifice to help the people that loved him.Holden's saga appears to end less positively, and he ends up in a mental hospital, not knowing what to do with the rest of his life. Both characters were living a lie, and avoided their problems at all costs. They made sacrifices for the ones they loved, in order to help and protect them. Finally, Willy and Holden both had dreams that they couldn't achieve; their realization of this finally put an end to their suffering, with Holden being institutionalized, and Willy sacrificing his life for his son.

This essay from Woody Allen answers the following question what if impressionists were not artists? It seems Mr. Allen found an appropriate answer they would be… dentists! He wrote this piece that puts oral surgery in a whole new light, in Allens distinctive style. The whole play deals with a parody on the life of Vincent Van Gogh, become a dentist and writing to his friend Theo to talk about his new life, much more exciting than a normal dentist and than an usual impressionist painter. Humour consists in keeping the impressionists' temperament as Woody Allen feels it and to apply it into a job where it provokes disasters. Indeed, this transposition of temperament makes impressionists very bad dentists, as we will discover it.

First, why being respectful of patients? Impressionists never thought about customers when they were painting an old master. They would paint it the way they liked it. So let's keep the same state of mind when making a bridge for Mrs. Sol Schwimmer "Mrs. Sol Schwimmer is suing me because I made her bridge as I felt it and not to fit her ridiculous mouth!" Patients do not seem to be very comprehensive. Even more when the bridge is "enormous and billowing, with wild, explosive teeth flaring up in every direction like fire!". Stupid Mrs. Sol Schwimmer who would rather have a bridge fitting her mouth and sustaining its part than a beautiful painting, moreover an impressionist painting. Maybe the help of Czanne, who is old and infirm, could help Vincent?

Then, professional work is still artwork that belongs to its author. As they take dentals X-rays, results catch the eye by their imperfections and impressionists-dentists are very critical about it. A partner's hard review can make one of them being very sad about this artwork. If this happens, the impressionist-dentist will call himself into question for a few days. Concerning Vincent, he is intelligent and professional enough to come over it, to go back to his office and to complete his work. Well done!

As Vincent is not a simple dentist but an impressionist-dentist, he always needs some money, breaking the legend of rich dentists. But as impressionist-dentists, Vincent is more intelligent no Novocaine any more? No problem, let's read to the patient some Dreiser! The idea of sharing its office is coming back, with Gauguin this time. But this man seems a little disturbed and provokes many more disasters than Vincent could make alone. This is surprising for an impressionist-dentist. As Gauguin's problems are mental ones, some other partners have different difficulties. Toulouse-Lautrec would be a perfect help but he is too short and Monet is a little megalomaniac and only wants to work on very large mouths. Vincent may have to go on working on his own.

Cheap Custom Essays on Discuss about "If the Impressionists had been dentists (A Fantasy exploring the transposition of temperament)", an essay from "Without Feathers", a book written by Woody Allen.

Vincent found a solution to its loneliness he felt in love with one of its patients, a girl with a perfect mouth. Woody Allen makes then a metaphor between Claire's life and her teeth. She lost a tooth during adolescence developing a cavity. This may mean one of its close relations died and she never recovered from it. Unfortunately for Vincent, its approach to Claire will be as is its life a calamity. Indeed, whereas he tried to be romantic by lowering the lights in its office, Claire ran out. This passage is not really impressionist but it seems to be more fantastic. It drove Vincent very sad. Fortunately, he found a very exciting solution to come over its depression he cut his ear to sell it.

Woody Allen presented us a view of what would be the life of an impressionist-dentist. This is crystal clear he does not really appreciate them, as he pictures a character sketch rather negative of Impressionists. They appear in this play as very selfish persons, unconscious of their environment, as completely irresponsible persons. To put it in a nutshell, Mr. Allen has a grudge against impressionists.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that affects the brain cells. It is not a normal part of aging and it is also not something that happens inevitably in later life. The disease was named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German physician in 106, after he had performed an autopsy on the brain of a dead woman who had experienced severe memory loss, confusion and difficulty understanding questions; and found dense deposits around her nerve cells. It is the most common type of dementia, which is a progressive dysfunction of the brain which results in a restriction of daily activities.

Alzheimer's disease can be diagnosed by means of an autopsy, which is a special surgical operation performed by specially trained physicians on a dead body to learn the truth about the person's health during life and how they died. Scientists can make an accurate diagnosis by performing a history and physical examination and measuring memory capabilities and psychological status checks. Early diagnosis can help the treatments that are available which work best in the earliest stages of the disease. If one feels they are at risk of getting the disease or you have symptoms of the disease, contact your physician and schedule an appointment to have neuro-checks done you. Does it mean that if you forget or misplace something you have Alzheimer's disease? The answer is, no, you need a doctor to confirm that you have it, because we all forget something sometimes but that does not really mean you have the disease.

The first symptom of the disease is forgetfulness. A person may have trouble remembering events, activities or the names of familiar people. Simple math problems may become hard to solve. In the later stages, a person may forget how to do simple tasks like brushing teeth or combing their hair, because they can no longer think clearly. They also begin having problems speaking, understanding, reading or writing. Later on a person with Alzheimer's disease may become anxious and aggressive or wander away and eventually needs total care.

Major warning signs of Alzheimer's disease include but are not limited to; asking the same question over and over again, repeating the same story, forgetting how to cook, losing one's ability to pay bills, getting lost in familiar surroundings, neglecting to bathe, or wearing the same clothes repeatedly whilst insisting they had a bath or have changed clothes and relying on someone else to make decisions they used to make.

The causes of Alzheimer's disease are not yet known but some risk factors include, person's age; Alzheimer's disease mostly affects people around the age of 65 but some cases have been reported in people as young as 5 years old, another risk factor is family history; scientists believe that genetics play a role in many Alzheimer's disease cases. If someone in a family had the disease, it is most likely that other people in the same family will have it too. Education, diet, viruses and environment are some of the other causes highlighted.

According to the Alzheimer's Association, the largest national voluntary health organization dedicated to research and helping those affected by the disease, it is estimated that about 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease. By 050 the estimated range of people with it will be 11. million to 16 million Americans. In a 1 survey 1 million people said they had a family member with the disease and 7 million knew someone who had it. The United States society spends $100 billion a year on Alzheimer's disease. The federal government estimates spending $58. million on research by the year 00. A person with the disease lives an average of eight to twenty years from the onset of symptoms. These estimates are according to surveys conducted by the Alzheimer's Association, who can be contacted by telephone or by visiting their website.

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but there are several drugs like aricept, exelon, cognex and reminyl, that may help symptoms from getting worse for a limited time. Researchers are in the process of finding a cure. Some ways of preventing the disease are; eliminating aluminum exposure via cookware, foil, underarm deodorants, drinking water and drinks packaged in aluminum-lined cartons, undergoing body and brain detoxification programs and by drinking lots of water daily.

Because there is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease, everyone should be involved in the fight to find a cure for it. Individuals can help by supporting the families of those affected and by also volunteering some time with the victims. I spend at least ten hours a week in a nursing home helping these people. If you contact any nursing home or assisted living and inquire about volunteer opportunities, they will gladly give you all the information you need. I will also be participating in this year's Alzheimer's memory walk in November at the Dallas Zoo. This is an event held annually to raise funds to help find a cure for the disease.More information about the disease and how to help can be found on the Alzheimer's Association website, www.alz.org. They have events throughout the year to help raise funds for research. There you can make donations too. Your contribution can make a difference.
