As defined in our text, (Schermerhorn et al 147) "motivation refers to the individual forces that account for the direction, level, and persistence of a person's effort expended at work." Motivation is a vital tool in any organization. Motivation is used as a means to stir up employees to cause them to excel in their position or performance. The many different theories of motivation can be divided into three expansive categories to include Reinforcement, Content, and Process theory. Our paper will focus on four aspects of the Content theory as each team member analyzes their own organization. Content theory suggests that different needs motivate diverse individuals to behave in a certain manner. Motivation results as defined in the Content theory as an employees attempt to satisfy their needs in the workplace.


Herzberg Theory


Gawal, (17) states American businesses have long embraced and believed in practicing the Herzberg and Maslow behavioral theories. Herzberg was able to construct his theory based on essentially asking the employee two questions. The first was to think of a time when they felt really good about the job and why. The second question was to think of a time when they felt bad about their job and why. This enabled him to create the Herzberg theory, which states that there are two dimensions to job satisfaction to include motivation and hygiene.


Hygiene issues should be addressed first, in order to create an atmosphere conducive to the employees' happiness. These factors include company policy, supervision, interpersonal relations, working conditions, and salary. Without the presence of these factor employees could feel job dissatisfaction. However, their presence does not always ensure that the employee will be motivated or satisfied. Herzberg was then able to determine that the actual motivator were factors that enriched a person's job. Gawal, (17) suggests the employee needs to have achievement, recognition, the work itself, responsibility, and advancement. These factors are vital to how the employee feels about job satisfaction.

In the Federal Government, all five of the Hygiene factors are addressed. Before an employee reports to work, they must first check in with Human Resources. At this time, they are given an employee handbook and instructed on policies and procedures.


The employee then reports to duty and is introduced to their supervisor. At this time, they are informed of the organization hierarchy and the reporting structure along with the information about their direct manager. Human Resources has recently developed the "buddy" system. Within the first week, the employee is introduced to their buddy. This individual escorts the new employee through the building to point out areas of interest and introduces to his/her coworkers.


Working conditions are always monitored and can be compared to any customary office. At the government's expense, the employee may have a heater or fan installed in their cubicle. While this may seem ridiculous and an unnecessary expense to some individuals most employees feel that this is their right to favorable working conditions.


The salary an individual wants to achieve is always at their disposal with either extra training or through continued education. The employee is empowered with the knowledge of what skills they need to possess in order to attain a certain salary. It is up to the individual to implement goals on how it can be achieved.


I believe the government offers the motivational tools for any employee to achieve workplace productivity. The five motivational factors of the Herzberg theory are present in my workplace, which enables the employee to receive long-term job satisfaction.
