survive and be able to send some of that money to his wife and his

In this play, the author uses plot, dialog, actions and symbolism to

emphasize Marcos honor which, in my opinion, is his prominent

Throughout the play, we can clearly see that the plot helps us

develop Marcos character in our imagination. For example, he is an

illegal alien, and this might give the reader a less honorable view of

him, and it might justify Eddies action. But the fact that Marco left

his family to give them support and to save his oldest son who is

sick in the chest, (pg. 55) makes the reader forget about his

illegal stay and makes his status rise to the one of a hero.

In this play, Marcos actions lead us to the discovery of a

violent side which he uses to defend his honor in a number of

occasions. For example, when he challenges Eddie to lift the chair at

the end of the first act, we understand that he did it to save his

brothers face and his familys honor. In addition, the killing of

Eddie by Marcos own hands at the end of the play, is the final

display of his character. Marcos character is definitely expressed

more by his actions than by his words. He is very strong, and he is

obviously aware of that, but doesnt like to show it in words, or brag

about it. In fact, when Eddie was making fun of his brother Rodolpho,

instead of replying to him in words, he chose to use his strenght to

get his point across by lifting the chair. In addition, Marco doesnt

talk about his family much; instead, he works as hard as he can, and

that is enough to show everybody how much he cares about them. As a

final insult to Eddie, Marco chooses to spit in his face in front of

everybody. This is because in the Italian culture, that act is

considered as an extreme expression of anger toward a person, and it

is rarely left without punishment. In addition, the action of going to

the church before facing Eddie shows us that he is very religious and

cares about his soul.

Marco is a very honorable man and believes in his tradition, and

the author shows us that through a number of symbols. For example,

spitting on Eddies face once he realizes that Eddie turned him and

his brother to the police is a symbol of disgust and revolt for

Eddies actions. In addition, at the end of the play, we are told that

Marco went to church before going to talk to Eddie. This action tells

us that Marco is ready to give up his life and commit a mortal sin to

defend his honor, because what Eddie has done, the breaking of the

omerta, the breaking of trust, is something that in his culture

must never be left unpunished.

Throughout the first act of the play, Marco is only referred as a

flat character and the only time we are really aware his persona

and his strength is at the end of the first act, when he lifts a chair

over his head and makes it seem like a challenge to Eddie, as a

response for mocking Rodolpho. But only in the second act his

character is fully exposed and we see his image transform into a

round character. In this play, Marco is portrayed as the victim, since

he hasnt done anything to Eddie but he still gets arrested. In

addition, although his brother Rodolpho gets away with it by marrying

Catherine, he has no other choice but to go back to his hungry wife

and sick children in Italy. This thoughts, and knowing that Eddie has

no regrets for what he has done makes him furious, and at the end of

the play he seeks revenge.

I belive this play would not be complete without this character.

If Marco would have not existed, it would have left Eddie unpunished

and alive, and this would be in conflict with the very conception of

drama which drives this works.

The Ancient Greeks loved the tragic heroes portrayed in theater. Sophocles, one of the greatest Greek playwrights, tells the tale of a king named Oedipus in his Greek tragedy, Oedipus the King. While attempting to discover Laius' murderer, Oedipus slowly begins to realize that Laius was his father, he was the man who murdered him, and he is now married to his mother, Jocasta. In the process, the audience also watches as the tragic tale of a Greek hero unfolds.

Being the king of Thebes, Oedipus is obviously a man of extreme importancethe first essential characteristic of a Greek tragic hero. In the fourth episode, he even believes he "may play the prophet." In his eyes, nothing can stop him, because he is "Fortune's child." In his own mind, Oedipus is greater than the gods. This false ideal results in several actions that lead to grave mistakes. He thinks that he can out with the gods by ring to escape his own destiny. His voice fills with horror, and in despair he cries out, "wicked, wicked eyes! You shall not see me nor my crime, not see my present shame. Go dark for all time blind to what you never should have seen, and blind to the love this heart has cried to see." Oedipus gouges out his eyes with Jocasta's pin. He punishes himself into a world of darkness where he alone can feel the anguish of the truths. Lastly, as all Greek tragic heroes do, Oedipus learns from his horrible catastrophe. The audience sees a once conceited king as now a humbled servan of the gogds. HE views himself as a "son of sin and sorrows," and says, "My load is mine." Oedipus realizes he is alone "deserted, dark."

Clearly, the unfortunate series of events in the life of Oedipus classify him as a Greek tragic hero. His role of importance, fatal flaw, grave mistakes, terrible consequences and the lessons he learns are all the necessary attributes. Her punishment is simple she stands on a scaffold before the condemning eyes of the whole town for three hours, and is sentenced by the town fathers to wear always on her breast a scarlet A, meant to stand for adultery. It is only by the interference of the towns minister, Reverend Dimmesdale, and the assumed fact of her husbands death, which saves Hester from the gallows.

On the day of Hesters release, a stranger comes to the town, calling himself Roger Chillingworth, a doctor. He examines Hester in her jail cell, and we discover that he was once her husband. He agrees to keep the secret of their marriage, as much for his sake as for hers. He also implores her to tell him who the childs father is. The following day, however, Hester discovers that Roger Chillingworth has secured passage on the same ship, and she knows then that he will never let them be happy. This is also the day that Reverend Dimmesdale is scheduled to give the Election Day sermon, which he does with unprecedented skill. At the end of his sermon, the Reverend seems to weaken substantially, and as he proceeds toward the scaffold of Hesters shame, he calls his lover and daughter to him. They climb the scaffold together, in the eyes of all the townspeople. Here the Reverend reveals to all his sin, and to match the scarlet letter on Hesters chest, he has carved one into his own flesh. Having finally confessed, he dies in Hesters arms.

What follows is all but inconsequential. Chillingworth is denied his revenge by the Reverends disclosure and death, and himself dies within the year. Pearl inherited all of his property, and became a rich young girl. She and Hester disappeared. Pearl is never again seen in New England, but many years later an old woman bearing a scarlet letter returned to the town, to resume her good works until the time of her death.

Hawthorne brings us this tale with many intents. He attempts to show us that we dont always see what we think we see. One who is held in high public regard may have the darkest secrets of all, and those held in contempt may have the hearts of saints. No man is fit to judge anothers heart, or to judge his sins. And above all, Hawthorne believes that it is best to bring your shame honestly into the open, to be seen and atoned for. Through seven years of silent suffering the Reverend Dimmesdale show us that no man can be judged as harshly as he judges himself.
