Chamberlain paper at affordable prices with cheap custom writing service!Wilt Chamberlain, in all fairness to Michael Jordan, was undoubtedly the best basketball player ever.As a freshman in high school, he was an unimaginable 6 feet 11 inches tall (Lapchick 54)!He was an All-American basketball player under coach Cecil Mosenson not even playing his senior year, and an All-American track and field participant, setting the Philadelphia high-jump record at 7 feet 1 inch.As do most high school stand outs, Chamberlain was offered full rides from numerous colleges including Kansas, Syracuse, Kentucky and many more. As it turned out he would decide to go to Kansas. His first game at Kansas set the tone for the rest of his magnificent career, scoring 5 points and pulling 18 rebounds. Two of his three years he was named All-American.Though, after his junior year at Kansas, he left for the NBA Draft, but because he did not graduate from college, he had to wait a year to play professionally. So, he played one year for the showboating Harlem Globetrotters. After this season, Wilt Chamberlain would start one of the most productive, memorable, and controversial careers in professional sports history by performing as a professional athlete, motivating young African Americans, changing the game for future generations, and above all, giving to those less fortunate than himself.

In 15, he began his career with the Philadelphia Warriors.Right away, he made a huge impact on the game.Because Wilt Chamberlain played the game he loved with so much integrity; the fans couldn't help but get into it with him.During his rookie season, he increased fan support by over %, a feat that not even the second best player to ever play the game, Michael Jordan, could accomplish (Libby ).With this fan increase and astonishing play during his rookie season, not only did he win Rookie of the Year, but also league MVP.He did this by matching up with some of the premier players in the league, such as Boston Celtic's center, Bill Russell. These two competitors and fierce rivals battled back and forth for the better part of 10 seasons, setting NBA records in rebounds, points, and probably blocked shots (even though they weren't recorded during their time). He also made the league enforce a few new rules.Chamberlain would grab the ball right above the rim on defense, forcing the league to make a new rule referring to him, defensive goaltending. Also, he would stand in the lane for seconds at a time and score uncontested, so, the league created another new rule, three seconds in the key."Wilt shattered virtually every scoring record in his first few years in the league. In the process of doing that, he rendered statistics irrelevant. So when Wilt scored 70 point in a game, no one paid attention. That was Wilt being Wilt," says veteran NBA writer, Leonard Koppett, "he had so many records that they began to lose meaning" ("Chamberlain, Wilton N.").This one quote shows the importance of Wilt's presence in the NBA.He was such a great player that people expected him to score 70 points in a game, they expected him to pull down 0 rebounds, and they expected him to win.

Wilt Chamberlain's performance during his NBA career motivated younger African American athletes to participate in all sports, not only basketball ("Basketball Professional").What most people forget about Wilt is that he was an amazing all-around athlete. He turned down offers to become a professional football player and a professional boxer.Wilt Chamberlain, along side with Mohammed Ali, were inspirational athletes for young African Americans everywhere ("Chamberlain 16").

Not only did Wilt Chamberlain motivate, but he also revolutionized the way the game was played. Before Chamberlain, there were no powerful centers in the league, only guards who won games with passing and shooting.Wilt Chamberlain was one of the first big men to dominate a game, and once scored an unbelievable 100 points in a game. Now, it's the big men who dominate.Look at all of the championship teams these past few years.Tim Duncan/David Robinson for the San Antonio Spurs, and, of course, Shaquille O'Neal for the Los Angeles Lakers. Also, that is why the West is the dominant conference in the NBA.They have bigger and better centers; Tim Duncan, Shaq, Amare Stoudimire, and others. The East has no good center, and that's why they will never win an NBA championship. If not for Wilt Chamberlain, big men may not be as dominating as they are today and the game would be won at the guard position.

Although, Wilt Chamberlain didn't just revolutionize the game of basketball, he helped with the reconstruction of the slums of cities.During his career, he gave a lot of money to schools within the Delaware Valley and Harlem, and started his own charity, The Wilt Chamberlain Foundation. He gave a good name to himself and to the game of basketball, and gained respect from the people of America.Although, later in life, he would encounter many problems, like child custody lawsuits, and questioning about his career that was coming to an abrupt end.His former coach, Joe Mullaney, had once said, "I've seen Wilt on television and he's just not the same guy.Sharman (Wilt's new coach) has Wilt playing like Russell" (Mel Florence). To Wilt, this must have been a big blow, especially since it came from his mentor. What he meant by saying he was playing like Russell is that he was playing a more defensive game than offensive game.Wilt was always accustomed to being the head scorer, but that role was passed down to L.A. point guard Jerry West.Wilt's career would soon end as a basketball player, but his reputation as a great man would go on for the rest of his life.

Wilt Chamberlain should be looked at as a well-rounded professional athlete, a motivator for young African Americans, one who changed how the game was played, and one who gave to those less fortunate than himself. Before Wilt's death on October 1, 1, people didn't look at him as a great man; they looked at him as just a basketball player.David Stern, commissioner of the NBA, said this quote after Wilt's death, "We've lost a giant of a man in every sense of the word. The shadow of accomplishment he cast over our game is unlikely ever to be matched" ("Wilt Chamberlain").This quote suits the great Wilt Chamberlain perfectly. His accomplishments are never going to be matched on the court, let alone off it.The words, "shadow of accomplishment", don't only mean one of the 50 greatest basketball players of all time, but one of the greatest contributors of all time.If not for Wilt's uprightness on and off the basketball court, the game would never be as great as it is to this day.

Halloween - Harmless Fun for Anyone

What does the wordHalloween mean to you? What ideas and emotions does that word connotate within you?Does it spin sticky, scary webs of fear across your eyes or does it induce fond memories of homemade costumes and the sweet tang of apple cider? Most people's opinion is probably is going to lean toward the apple cider.Maybe it reminds you of a funny prank you pulled on a friend. Some people remember hayrides or bonfires, and others recall carving pumpkins and school dances. One thing you might notice is that very few people answer those questions with negative experiences. No one answered, "My family and I gather around the cemetery to practice occult rituals and hand out candy spiked with razor blades."Granted, this does happen upon occasion, and those people aren't going to admit those practices.Still, very few people associate Halloween with negative experiences. So why all the hype against celebrating Halloween? This holiday is one of the most creative, social holidays of all.

Last year in my son's second grade classroom, four out seventeenchildren were not allowed to celebrate Halloween in any way, shape or form. That is nearly one third of the children in that classroom. Therefore, the teacher and the schoolswitched to "Fall Festival Day", celebrated on a totally different date than October 1. The children are not allowed to do any traditional Halloween activities. There were no pumpkin activities, no paper ghosts hanging from the ceiling, and there were definitely no costumes allowed, or that child would be sent home early with suspension.Somehow, these activities might poison our children's tiny brains and they could become Satanists or psychos one day and kill us all.Maybe they just might have some good old fashioned fun, and wouldn't that be a terrible thing?I am of the opinion that Halloween, if left as only that, is just harmless fun for anyone.Danger is always just around the corner in any situation life presents and a few careful safety precautions can prevent it.

Of the four children who's family objected to Halloween observances, three families gave "religious" reasons. One of these three stated the household to be completely "non-religious" and therefore do not celebrate any holidays, according to the teacher. The other two explained that the family was "very religious" and strictly against any non-Christian holiday. The fourth family was simply afraid of receiving bad candy and exposure to opportunists who might take advantage of the dark/masks/etc. for malicious acts. There are many different stories to be found on the origins of the Halloween holiday, Christian and pre-Christian, Satanic and non-Satanic.My viewpoint is that any day is what you make of it, and if the kids want to make funny masks and collect candy and run around yelling boo at each other then let them. There are so much worse things they could be doing. If we teach them to make sacrifices they will.If we teach them to have fun and not read more into a fun day than there is, they will. Kids need to have fun.My eight year old son brought home one to two hours of homework every day last year, after being in school for seven hours a day.Kids need just plain fun every now and then.

Do my essay on Halloween - Harmless fun for anyone CHEAP !

I remember several outbreaks of"candy spiking" that happened when I was young, withglass or razor blades or even poison in candy.I admit, these may seem very dangerous to our vulnerable children. But no one is expected to just turn their kids out into the street for one evening. One big safety tip is "Only trick-or-treat to places you know."Go see family and visit neighbors you are familiar with, or go to local malls who sponsor safe trick-or-treating events for the kids.We should be smart about what our kids are doing.Another helpful hint is to look up the local hospital.Lots of these sponsor candy X-rays for Halloween and the days after.Take advantage of community events and church festivals. All of these programs provide close chaperoning for children. So many safe options are available to protect our children. With structured alternatives, there is no reason to completely deny the kids of Halloween fun.

Halloween is a holiday that appeals to almost anyone.Creativity emerges with crazy pumpkin sculptures, homemade costumes, treat and cider recipes, house and room decorations - the list goes on and on. Many people want their children to develop creativity. What a fine way to bring it out in them!Costume contests are a wonderful opportunity to let kids have the reins on their own.Let them come up with their own idea and then help them find things around the house to glue, cut, tape, pin or even sew to their costume.Kids can learn to appreciate the kitchen duty by following a simple recipe to create a worm pie cake, or sour tart cider. Several local apartment complexes sponsor a "Decorate your Door" contest for Halloween and give prizes for the scariest, silliest, and other "bests". These not only grab for the kids imagination, which they are dying to use on you, but encourage socializing as well.

Socializing is another positive feature of the many events of Halloween. What better place to make a friend than on a hayride or roasting marshmallows around a bonfire? So many people have memories of trick-or-treating with large groups of the neighborhood kids and their mothers. In more urban areas, block parties are planned and streets are closed off for the festivities with security available. Schools used to hold Halloween dances, with contests and prizes. Now they call it Fall Fest and there are no contests.Unless you're referring to the beer funneling after the dance. The point is that Halloween encourages socializing.People are so private nowadays. They are afraid to let other people in or get attached. The old neighborhoods were great, when everybody bobbed for apples at your house, or watched scary movies together at my house.

The rat race we call life overwhelms us at times.Even at other holidays, there are demands placed on us.We need money to buy gifts, space to put up visiting relatives, time to cook food.We don't need anything to celebrate Halloween except a happy smile and a ready laugh.Adults and children alike can make costumes and be creative.Old and young can decorate and make treats.People of any color or religion can bob for apples or roast marshmallows or laugh at a scary story.Anybody and everybody should always be ready to have a little fun.

So the next time you encounter someone who opposes Halloween festivities, give them a hint or two.I always do.Halloween does not have to be about religion or fear or dangerous candy.Halloween is just like any other day of the year - what you make of it.

His father died when he was only six years old. His mother was extremely religious and this would play a key role in his philosophy.Leibniz was intellectually gifted. He taught himself Latin at an early age and learned some Greek by age 1.He also read a lot in the classics at an early age.His great interest in literature and language seemed to be his motivation to read his father's books. In school, Leibniz was taught Aristotle's logic and theory of categorising knowledge, which Leibniz thought to be inadequate and believed he could make it better. This added to the list of his many projects, and he was still in high school.Aside from school studies, Leibniz mainly studied metaphysics and theology books from both Catholic and Protestant writers (Magill 1).

Leibniz was formally educated at the University of Leipzig at the age of 14.Although this sounds like an extremely young age to enter college, in his time it was quite extraordinary but there would still be a few his age.In Leipzig, he received his bachelors and masters degrees of law for theses on jurisprudence. For an unknown reason, Leibniz was refused his doctorate degree in law (Magill 14).Without taking any hesitation, he transferred to the University of Altdorf, where he received his doctorate in law in 1666.He declined a professorship at Altdorf.Instead, he began a life of professional service to noblemen, primarily the dukes of Hanover (O'Connor 1).

Among the dukes Leibniz had served, one was Duke Baron Johann Christian von Boineburg. In 167, Leibniz was sent to Paris on the behalf of Boineburg. In Paris, Leibniz was supposed to use Boineburg's plan to divert Louis XIV from attacking German areas. His first object in Paris was to make contact with the French government but, while waiting for such an opportunity, Leibniz made contact with mathematicians and philosophers there, in particular Arnauld andMalebranche. He also began the construction of his mechanical calculating machine which he hoped would spark interest. In Paris Leibniz studied mathematics and physics under Christiaan Huygens beginning in the autumn of 167 (O'Connor ).Also in the autumn of 167, Boineburgs son was sent to Paris to study under Leibniz which meant that his financial support was secure. Accompanying Boineburgs son was Boineburgs nephew on a diplomatic mission to try to persuade Louis XIV to set up a peace congress. Boineburg died on 15 December but Leibniz continued to be supported by the Boineburg family (O'Connor ).

Shortly after the death of his employer, Boineburg, Leibniz was elected a fellow member of the Royal Society. He also met again with Huygens who gave him a reading list including works by Pascal, Fabri, Gregory, Saint-Vincent, Descartes and Sluze. He began to study the geometry of infinitesimal (Magill 16).However, Newton and Gregory had already found general methods for the study. Also, Leibniz not in the best of favours with the Royal Society since he had not kept his promise of finishing his mechanical calculating machine. His chances for being recognized for his discovery were slim (Magill 17).

While working vigorously in the field of math in Paris, Leibniz soon developed the basic features of his version of the calculus. In 167 he was still struggling to develop a good notation for his calculus and his first calculations were clumsy. He would work in both differential and integral calculus. On 1 November 1675 he wrote a manuscript using the f(x) dx notation for the first time. In the same manuscript the product rule for differentiation is given.By autumn 1676 Leibniz discovered the familiar d(xn) = nxn-1dx for both integral and fractional n (O'Connor 5).

Ever since his individual discovery of calculus, there has been a huge controversy over who had actually discovered the method of calculus first; Newton or Leibniz. When a mathematician reviewed a book written by Newton, he stated that Newton had just translated Leibniz's works in the book. The faithful admirers of Newton jumped to his defense saying that it was the other way around and that it was Leibnitz who had stolen Newton's work (O'Connor 6).

Leibniz would have liked to remain in Paris in the Academy of Sciences, but it was considered that there were already enough foreigners there and so no invitation came.Leibniz than accepted a position from the Duke of Hanover, Johann Friedrich, of librarian and of Court Councilor at Hanover. As a librarian, Leibniz virtually invented the cataloguing system used today.

Another of Leibniz'z notable achievements in mathematics was his development of the binary system of arithmetic. He perfected his system by 167.Another major mathematical work by Leibniz at this time was his work on determinants, which arose from his developing methods to solve systems of linear equations.Although he never published this work in his lifetime, an unpublished paper dated January , 1684 contains very satisfactory notation and results (O'Connor 7).

In 1684 Leibniz published details of his differential calculus in Nova Methodus pro Maximis et Minimis, itemque Tangentibus… in a journal established in Leipzig two years eariler. The paper contained the familiar d notation, the rules for computing the derivatives of powers, quotients and products. However, it contained no proofs. In 1686 Leibniz published in the same journal a paper dealing with the integral calculus with the first appearance in print of the S notation.

Near the end of Leibniz's life, he had an intellectual disputed with Samuel Clarke, who was a disciple of Newton.Leibniz claimed that Newton's physics had contributed to a decline of religion in England and that the notions of absolute space and absolute time also violated the principle of sufficient reason.Samuel Clarke continued to defend Newton until the death of Leibnitz in November 14, 1716.His death finally ended the dispute between them.Leibniz died in Hanover at the age of 70 (Magill 1).

Leibniz is considered one of the greatest polymaths or person with great variety of learning, in the modern world. He worked in many fields and met many other great intellects of his time because he was allowed to travel widely.A list of his significant contributions is almost as long as the list of his activities. As an engineer, he worked on calculating machines (poster), clocks and even mining machinery. As a librarian he more or less invented the modern idea of cataloguing. As a mathematician he came up with calculus independently. As a physicist, he made advances in mechanics, specifically the theory of momentum. He also made contributions to linguistics, history, aesthetics and political theory.Overall, Leibniz made many great contributions to the world in his lifetime (Leibniz 1).

Much of EWT is based upon face identification. For example using photographs or line up's to identify someone they may have only seen in a poor amount of light.

There are many different reasons or influences which can change someone's perception or opinion of there perception of what they saw.

Face recognition is an example of object recognition.

Custom Essays on how does seamus heany convey death, in the collection death of a naturalist.

We were asked to discus the issues raised when it comes to face recognition on EWT some things to consider when raising these issues are listed below.

Template theory We have a range of different templates which recognise certain shapes and permit identification. But for this system to work we would have to have a large number of templates. NEISSER (164) found that people taking part in his query took longer to search for 'not Q' than 'Q' in the list of letters.

If they had been using a template both of the searches should have taken the same amount of time.

Evaluation of this theory this contradicts the template theory so there for it is not conclusive in my opinion I agree with NEISSER it should have taken the same amount of time. When it comes to EWT this could have a big impact, on whether they are able to remember one thing more than another or claim they do. There are more things to remember in a dramatic situation and they have stress and perhaps a weapon to deal with at the same time, i.e. weapon focus. All these issues must be taken into account.

Feature detection We look for certain features of an object for example when we search for the letter A in a list of letters we apparently search for straight lines. It is there for easier to find an A than and O. NEISSER(164) also found that visual searches were longer if for example a D was embed in a group of letters with similar features.

Evaluation The process of face recognition differs from object recognition in a major way.

DERENZI (186) studied one patient and found that he was good at recognising his own handwriting as different as someone else's. But was unable to recognise relatives by sight although he could recognise there voices. Studies similar to these and on people who are brain damaged show that perhaps face recognition and object recognition are from different storage areas. This suggests that in some cases maybe one area is more important than others or perhaps people are better at recognising one area to another, or that one are can influence another.

Recognising configuration People may recognise individual features but the over all arrangement is more important.

YOUNG (187) combined the top half of a well known famous persons face with the bottom half of another famous person's face, he aligned them as closely as possible. People tended to find this harder to recognise both celebrities, the reason for this being they had combined to make a new configuration which interfered with face recognition.

Evaluation People tend to disguise themselves and erase all distinguishing features which make them more inconspicuous. There for they can sometimes get muddled with the true identity of the criminal.

Faces in motion identikit pictures are motionless where as face knowledge is in motion, this for example shows emotional status.

BRUCE AND VALENTINE (188) showed a group of people faces in motion only rather than use facial features; he did the filming by shinning a light on the face and filming in the dark. The participants in the group were able to identify facial expressions. Sometimes, they could identify the person based upon movement only. Evaluation This suggests as most crimes committed are in motion that the people involved may again not see what they claim to see or think they saw something.

Unfamiliar faces In EWT again people are asked to recognise people's faces that they have not seen before, this is much harder to do than recognise and describe a familiar face.

For example BAHRIK (175) did a survey and proved that people en 5 years later could still recognise there class mates from a school photograph. But this is different from recognising someone you don't know.

Evaluation therefore when it comes to recognising someone you may associate them with some one you know and tend to lean towards them, and perhaps bend what you first thought they looked like into something else.

A theory evaluation concluded by BRUCE AND YOUNG (186) proposed a model for face recognition that suggested that there are two DIFFERENT mechanisms for unfamiliar and familiar face recognition, a distinction supported by the study on brain damaged patients. The recognition of unfamiliar faces probably involves feature detection where as familiar face recognition involves recognition of configuration.

My evaluation

We have seen that emotions enhance recall-flashbulb memory or suppress it- repressed memories. LOFTS (17) were called as an expert witness on the psychology of memory in a trial where a shop assistant, Melville had an identified a robber JOSE GARCIA. One of the points he made in relation to memory research was about the effect on recall especially short term memory.

Therefore I conclude that when it comes to EWT those perpetrators that are found guilty may no be if based upon a witness alone. The people that give the account on witnessing an event may have had the actual event muddled in there head. There are many issues as told above that can influence your actual recognition and the one that you come up with. Based upon how emotional you are at the time of the event or how dramatic it is, how much you recognise the person or even weapon recognition which can prevent you from seeing all of the factors of the scene which you may claim to o seen.

People also tend to hold grudges on people they may think to be guilty or perhaps have similarities of those that are actually guilty. They may even change here opinion on what the perpetrator looks like due to the desperation of finding someone. Something that sounds the same or looks the same as them may set off a neural mechanism in there brain and automatically they are the one who did, when they could be guilty. It is a good thing our society has changed the penalties of crimes. How could any one live with themselves if they put someone in an electric chair that was innocent.

In my final opinion people don't see what is actually there; people see what they want to see!

When reading the detective genre many conventions are used to communicate various ideas to its readers. In Cotton Comes to Harlem by Chester Himes, the author relies heavily upon tone/mood to express the main message. The story takes place in the heart of Harlem where crime is accepted, money rules all, and death by violence is common.

The focal point of this novel is a"misplaced" bale of cotton. As you read further into the novel you realize a sort of motif of other things also being "misplaced". It seems as if everyone in the novel is motivated or inspired in some way to place everything where it belongs. The two main characters Gravedigger and Coffin Ed are driven by crime. Their highest desire is to right the wrong in the streets of Harlem-especially by returning the money to the rightful owners. The black people of Harlem are inspired by the fact that they will be where they belong when they are at their home in Africa. The white people of Harlem are motivated by the idea that with blacks being returned to the south balance will be restored among the people.

By the end of the novel I identified the reoccurring theme as being "everything has it place". The author suggests an inspirational/motivational mood to express the main message of everything having its place.

Throughout the novel there are different levels of intensity within the mood. For example, whenever Grave Digger and Coffin Ed are speaking of returning the money to the people of Harlem, the feeling of inspiration and motivation to do right is extremely high. When Grave Digger and Coffin Ed are at the site of the Back-To-Africa movement the tone of inspiration is full of compassion

They were silent for a moment with the rain pouring over themthinking of these eighty-seven families who had put down their thousand-dollar grubstakes on a dream. They knew that these families had come by their money the hard way. To many, it represented the savings of a lifetime. To most it represented long hours of hard work at menial jobs. None could afford to lose it (6).

Grave Digger and Coffin Ed feel they owe it to the black people of Harlem to see that justice is served. The money being returned to the people of Harlem is what compels the two detectives to crack down on the scum of Harlem. Another instance of Grave Digger and Coffin Ed's inspirational moments of restoring the money is when they are talking to Sarah in her apartment "And we don't give a damn about Deke either. But eighty-seven grand of colored people's hard earned money got lost in the caper and we want to get it back" (5). Himes does an incredible job of setting the inspirational tone for his readers by allowing the main characters to display an abundance of sentiment for the task that they must complete.

When the black people of Harlem decide to take a stand and be in command of their lives, the main message of everything having its place has an immense impact on the tone of the story. Perhaps the most crucial proposal of everything having its place takes place when the people of Harlem decide they should go back to their home; Africa. As they are signing up at the Back-To-Africa movement the people realize they aren't welcomed nor do they belong in America " Africa to them was a big free land which they could proudly call home, for there were buried bones of their ancestors, there lay roots of their families, and it was inhabited by the descendants of those same ancestors-which made them related by both blood and race" (6). If nothing else displays the motif of everything having its place that quote should have solidified it. It shows that the people are searching for their place because they are in a frantic need to be united into a community. At the movement when Reverend O'Malley is telling the people the benefits of moving back to Africa versus staying in America, living impoverished, the tone of the story remains at one of inspiration "By that time you will be harvesting your second crop in Africa, living in warm sunny houses where the only fire you need will be for cooking, where we'll have our own governments and our own rulers-black like us" (7). Himes reveals to his readers just how important it is that the black people of Harlem feel that they belong somewhere, preferably in their right place.

The last major instance of things having their place is when the white people of Harlem try to convince the black people that they don't belong in the North. At these points in the story the level of inspiration is at it's lowest level of intensity because there is little hope for the blacks. The hope that does remain for them is one of falsehood. When Colonel Calhoun is advertising for the Back-To-The-Southland movement he embellishes how great the south will be for the blacks

… the other depicting fat, grinning colored people sitting at tables ladenwith food, driving about in cars as big as Pullman coaches black children entering modernistic schools equipped with stadiums and swimming -pools, elderly people clad in Brooks Brothers suits and Saks Fifth Avenue dresses filing into a church that looked astonishingly like Saint Peter'sCathedral in Rome with its captionThe Happy South (56).

The colonel will say just about anything to swindle the people of Harlem out of their money and get them to go to the South where he can control them. He even tries to convince Barry from the Back-To-Africa movement that the black people belong back in the south " The South is the place for them, the good old reliable Southland. We love and take care of our darkies" (60). The whites believe that the blacks should be sent back to the South where their labor is needed and they can keep them oppressed. Although the white people are only trying to put the blacks in the South for their personal benefit the idea still goes along with the main message of everything having its place.

Dealing with the detective genre one would think that the main message would be one with a negative connotation because of the conventions that come along with the detective genre. Murder, crime, and violence seem to be the backbone of the detective genre but the inspirational/motivational mood became apparent to me once I looked past just the symbolism of the bale of cotton. Himes does something that isn't usually done with the detective genre, he doesn't let the dark and gritty concepts associated with detective stories stop him from letting positive aspects shine through. The inspirational tone of the story still remains even though the blacks of Harlem don't make it to Africa. Though at the end of the novel everything doesn't end up where it belongs most of the important things do the money is returned to the people of Harlem and the scum of Harlem are put behind bars or put to death thus reiterating the main message of everything having its place.

Killmer (00), in his article "So much information, so little time Evaluating Web resources

with search engines", states, "An abundance of search engines tools can be used to retrieve information

from the World Wide Web.Search Engine Watch (001) reports that more than 75 search engine tools are

available and provide links to many relevant sources" (P 1).However, in using search engines on the

Help with essay on Evaluating Web Resources With Search Engines

web to retrieve information, one must be cognizant of the many deleterious situations one can

encounter with the web page and its search engine. For instance, search engines can retrieve

pages out of context, and one must try to return to the "home page" to determine the source of

information.Another problem with search engines is getting the information filtered. In other

words, it may take a number of "hits" before one reaches the relevant information. The source of

information is difficult to determine because the authorship of the web resource is missing. The

author's qualifications are frequently absent, and the publisher responsibility is often not

indicated on the web page. The instability of web pages is another drawback. Users may not be

able to refer back to a web page because of its constant dynamic changes.

There are a number of ways to gauge the performance of search engines.Three of the key

points are as follows

Key Point Number 1Not all search engines find the same information. Killmer (00) states, "

This can be attributed to the fact that different search engines are used, as well as the fact that each engine

belongs to a different category of search tool" (P 1). Each search engine is different in its own search

capabilities, and needs certain information in order to retrieve the relevant or needed

information. Some search engines are more apt in finding a specific piece of data, document or

site requested, while others retrieve tons of information. Some search engines utilize indexing

software agents often called "robots" or "spiders". These agents are programmed to constantly

"crawl" the web search of new or updated pages.Furthermore, each engine search tool is

dependent and differs in its database for finding information.

Key Point Number Retrieval effectiveness of the search results. Two types of measures are

used to evaluate the retrieval effectiveness of search engines; recall and precision."Recall

measures how well an engine retrieves all the relevant documents, whereas precision measures

how well the system retrieves only the relevant documents" (Blair and Maron 185). In other

words, recall is the percentage of sites we want that were retrieved, while precision is the

percentage of sites retrieved that we want.Figure 1 below depicts a graphical representation of

recall and precision.

Figure 1

In the above figure, U represents the "web universe", all included. Areas A, B, and C, represent

three search engines. In areas A are the sites that we want, but always miss; whereas in area C

are the sites we do not want, but always receive.Areas A plus B are the sites we want to see,

and, areas B plus C are the sites we get in return. The recall process for these three engines is

calculated by dividing Area B by the addition of Areas A and B. Dividing Area B by the sum of

areas B and C calculates the precision process.

Key Point Number . Obtaining different results, using a combination of search engines and

times. If one was to use all 75 search engines, one would not only find a difference in site

content, but also in the results. As Killmer (00) states, "all search engines provide different results,

even if they are simultaneously selected. As noted by Lawrence and Giles (1), the overlap in information

between the various search engines is relatively low, therefore, one obvious conclusion is that combining results

of multiple engines greatly improves coverage of the web in searches" (P 6).

There are two critical thinking questions stem from the use of search engines for the retrieval

of information.First, can meta tags increase the chances of one's web page being found via a

search engine."Effective" meta tags can be used to assist search engines in identifying a site and

giving it a "higher" score when relevant search terms are requested. Secondly, are there dates on

the page to indicate When the page was written? When the page was first placed on the Web?

When the page was last revised?

The date is an indication that the material on the web page is kept current, and as such, the

searched relevant information is up to date. For financial information, is there an indication it

was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission and is the filing date listed? For material

from the companys annual report, is the date of the report listed?

Relation to Profession.I currently work with ten Department of Defense, Air Force,software-

intensive programs. These programs are web-based, and in the process, are tested for a number

of web related objectives, one of which is the usability of the search engines. In the operational

effectiveness of these programs, we test to ensure the web site provides adequate response times.

We need to determine of concurrent users, and identify the fastest and slowest web pages to be

down loaded. While the number of "hits", page views, or operational users per day are useful

measures for an operational test perspective, a better gauge of the load being applied to a web

site will include the number of transactions per second, the number of concurrent users and the

number of session initiations per hour.

There is a tremendous amount of knowledge and information available on the Web.The most

expeditious and efficient electronic manner to search for documents, data and information is

through one or more of the 75 search engines available in this country. Not all search engines

are created equal. Some need more difined and precise requests to provide the useful and

relevant information. Some differ in their searching capabilities, methods of displaying the

information requested, while others contain their own database.Other search engines, such as

the metasearch engines can search multiple databases simultaneously via a single interface.

Search engines can be used to evaluate web resources. In doing so, one can attest to its

information retrieval effectiveness by the recall and precision methods of measuring wanted or

relevant information.

Terrorism

On September 11, 2001 Islamic terrorists hijacked American airplanes leaving from Washington DC and headed west towards California. After hijacking the planes the men flew two planes into the World Trade Center in New York and one plane into the Pentagon in Washington DC. A fourth plane hijacked crashed in Philadelphia; never reaching it's designated target. The terrorist attack created a magnitude of devastation across America, amounting to the largest attack worldwide to date. Though this attack raised awareness about terrorism in the United States, many East-Asian countries have been living with the reality of terrorism for decades. However, over the last decade attacks have increased and spread outward, away from the east and into the west. Why have Islamic terrorist acts expanded to western countries? Why has the institution of terrorism become such an intriguing profession for many middle- eastern men? Why has there been a steady increase in terrorism over the last decade? The answers to these questions come from complex psychological aspects in the fundamentalist mentality and way of life.

Islam is a religion based on the teachings from the Koran, a book containing the Prophet Mohammed's prophecies from Allah (God). Many Muslims interpret the Koran in ways to verify destructive and harmful acts their organizations orchestrate. With terrorism on a significant incline and technology advancing by the day, interpretations have the ability to create agents of mass destruction.

Destructive deadly acts committed annually by terrorists have been increasing steadily the past five years starting in 1995 when 420 terrorist attacks occurred worldwide; presenting a significant increase from the previous years 322 (Leader). Though the number of attacks alone appears quite alarming, the new tactics and motives demonstrated by the religiously inclined terrorists, such as Islamic fundamentalists, are even more shocking and have lead to the rise and cause of the terrorist trend (Leader). Buy Terrorism term paper

After September 11 the world seemed to open it's eyes and recognize the growing problem with terrorism. Islamic groups have been committing these chaotic acts for years believing it to be the will of Allah. The increase in terrorist attacks can be traced to the increase in fundamentalists religious following. Groups such as Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, two very active terrorists groups in Palestine, recruit from the streets spreading their propaganda and attracting impressionable youth, males between 14-30, to their cause.Hassan, a reporter stationed in Palestine, met with members of both organizations for a period of 5 years. Over this time period he met with the founder of the Islamic Jihad organization, Dr. Fathi Shiqaqi. Shiqaqi explained using human bombs as " a necessary tactic in striving for the goal of Allah (Hassan, 2001)" Many Arabic-Islamic terrorists have the same aspects on the bombings leading many young men to join with hopes of pleasing Allah and reaching paradise (Hassan, 2001).

The hope of reaching paradise inspires many Islamic terrorists to commit a suicide mission. To put the person that will become the human bomb in a state of reliance, the person prays endlessly all day believing that once they died they will be in Heaven with Allah and Muhammad. Men that Hassan interviewed believed dying for Allah is the quickest and most reliable way to reach paradise (Hassan, 2001). Most humans exhibit some desire to reach a paradise or at least a better world after death. To impressionable youth the guarantee of a paradise after committing suicide appears to be a "win-win" situation; Allah is served by destroying non-believers and he journeys to a splendorous paradise. Many times in life we seem to see only the good and are blind to the bad. Nevertheless, the rise in Islamic fundamentalist members contributes to the rise in terrorist attacks.

Another factor that has contributed to the rise in terrorist acts is the advancement in technology. The Al-Queda organization, an Islamic terrorist group founded by Osama Bin-Laden, now use "computerized files, email and encryption to support their operation (Freech)".

Along with the advancement in technology based communication there have also been advancements in explosives and chemical warfare. Not only have the bombs increased in magnitude they've also become harder to detect leaving the world blind to many attacks before they occur. Also, the advancement in protection of buildings from possible terrorists have led fundamentalists to use larger bombs in order to still cause destruction and devastation and not be detected before detention (Watson, 1998). However, it is not the size of the bomb used that has begun to attract attention and gain Muslim support, it is the newfound availability. Through recent used private sponsors, terrorists are directly supported with enough money to be able to buy black marketed weapons, a practice rarely done before private sponsorship due to lack of funds (Leader, 2002).

Although many Americans and others worldwide have come to believe that all Muslims are violent destructive terrorists who hate the United States and have caused the rise in terrorism, it is simply not true.Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadel, an Islamic journalist, explains to journalist Keith Morrison the importance of peace in the Islam faith. Fadel doesn't excuse the acts of terrorism that fellow believers have committed, but instead says "Religion has the power of producing enormous amounts of good but also has the power of producing an enormous amount of evil (Morrison, 2002)."Fadel explained that all religions have activists that take the written word very literally and Muslims are no different. Karen Armstrong, a religious scholar explains " It's very easy to play up the more aggressive passages of scripture and play down those parts that speak of peace and compassion (Morrison, 2002)."

The causes that have led to the incline in Islamic terrorist activity are bountiful. Explained in this paper are basic causes that have come from simple advances in society. A more psychological view on the incline would stem from the moral of the people and their demented confused views of their religion. Add campaigns across the country for the NRA use the slogan "guns don't kill people" as their support for anti-gun control in America. The planes that flew into the WTC and the Pentagon caused the building to explode but the men behind the control, the ones who took over the plane are the ones responsible. A generation now lives in these middle- eastern countries that believe and are prepared to bring about the end of the world. This reality of the Islamic fundamentalist and their beliefs rightfully strikes terror into million worldwide. It is hard to believe that such few men can become such large agents of destruction (Morrison, 2002).

However, due to the advancements in technology, use of the literal meaning of the Koran, and the rise in propaganda supporting the devastation and destruction of millions, terrorism has become a deadly trend and an increasingly popular way to make a point.

Importance of selecting the correct fuse

Selecting the correct fuse means that the maximum protection is given in the event of a fault occurring in an electrical circuit. A fuse is a device for opening a circuit by means of a conductor designed to melt when an excess current flows along it. This opening of the circuit prevents damage generally of a physical nature, to various parts of an electrical circuit, wiring system, accessories, fitted appliances and apparatus. The prevention of such damage means the protection of danger to life and property from shock and fire of an electrical origin

Task

Final circuit

A final circuit is an assembly of conductors and accessories emanating from a final distribution board.

Radial circuit

In a radial circuit the conductors do not form a loop but finish at the last socket.

Final Ring circuit

In this conductors form a continuous loop, starting and returning to the origin of the circuit. The circuit protective conductors (CPC) is also connected in a ring.

( C )Regulations from the BS 7671 wiring regulations that apply to lighting and power circuits are

14-01-01 Every installation shall be divided into circuits as necessary to

( 1 )Avoid danger and minimize inconvenience in the event of a fault and

()Facilitate safe operation¸ inspection testing and maintenance.

14-01-0 Separate circuits shall be provided for parts of the installation which need to be separately controlled (i.e. lighting heating and socket outlets ) in such a way that these circuits are not affected by failure of other circuits

14-01-0The number of final circuits required, and the number of points supplied by any final circuit, shall be such as to comply with the requirements of the regulations. Standard arrangements of final circuits are described in appendix' on site guide '

14-01-04 When an installation comprises more than one final circuit, each final circuit shall be connected to a separate 'way' in a distribution board. The wiring of each final circuit shall be electrically separate from that of every other final circuit.

Final ring circuit0 A fuse

A M.C.BRed.5 mm

CookerO ARed6 mm

4Immersion heater15 ABlue.5 mm

5 kW shower45 AGreene10 mm

Task 4

(a) Overloading

Overloading occurs when an extra load is taken from the supply , This load, being in addition to the existing load in a circuit, resulting in a corresponding rise in the current e.g. (1) If all the lamps in a lighting circuit were changed from 100 watt to 00 watt () A large number ofkW fires were plugged into a power circuit. This increased current immediately causes the circuit cables to heat up and, if the overload is sustained, the result will be a rapid deterioration of the insulation leading to breakdown and fire.

(b) Short circuit

Short circuit is direct contact or connection between a live conductor and, either a neutral conductor, or earthed metalwork, the contact usually being the result of an accident. The result of a short circuit is to present a conducting path of extremely low resistance which will allow the passage of currents often of many hundreds of amperes. If the circuit has no over-current protection, the circuit cables would heat up rapidly and melt, equipment would suffer severe damage, and fire would result.

(c) Fuse discrimination

The ability or lack of it to discriminate between different loads e.g. a rewireable fuse is not capable of discriminating between a high current of short durationsuch as a motor startingand a continuous fault current. This means it is possible in certain fault conditions, for a 15-ampere fuse element (cartridge fuse) to melt before a 10-ampere fuse element (rewirable fuse)

(d) Fussing factor

Fusing factor = (minimum fusing current ) / ( current rating)

E.g. the fusing factor of a rewirable fuse is about . Thus a fuse element rated at 10 amperes will melt (blow) at 10 x= 0 amperes, so a fault of twice the normal designed current must flow before the protection device functions and breaks the circuit. This also means that it is possible to run a circuit on a continuos overload for a considerable time with eventual damage to the installation.

Task 6

In a miniature circuit breaker the operating devices are (1) THERMAL, by means of a BI -metal strip. Small overloads are detected by a carefully calibrated BI - Metal strip.

() MAGNETICSolenoid and armature. For overcurrants of between 4-7 times rated current the current flowing through the solenoid attracts an armature causing the MCB to trip in less than 100 m/s

Task 8

By connecting the metal casing to the earth system in a building we ensure that everything is at the same potential as earth and that;

(1) No dangerous differences in potential exist between the metalwork and earth.

() By connecting earthed metalwork not intended to carry current an path is provided for leakage current which can be detected and, if necessary interrupted by the following devices.

 Fuse

 Circuit breaker

 Residual current devices

Task 7Residual Current Device (RCD)

An R.C.D is designed to give protection against shock risk and against fire. The basic circuit for a single-phase device is as illustrated.

Operation

The current taken by the load is fed through to equal and opposing coils wound on a common transformer core. When the phase and neutral currents are balanced as they should be on a healthy circuit they produce equal and opposing fluxes in the transformer core, resulting in low voltage in the trip coil. If more current flows in the phase than in the neutral an out of balance flux will be produced which will be detected by the fault detector coil. The fault detector coil opens the D.P switch by energising the trip coil.

Test Switch / Button

The test switch is a requirement of BS84. The test switch tests only that the circuit breaker is functioning correctly and is operating in the correct order of sensitivity as specified by BS4

Task

A conductor of electricity is a material that offers low resistance to the flow of electrons (electric current) through it

An insulator is a material that very few electrons can pass through.

Some conductors are

 Copper

 Gold

 Aluminum

 Silver

Some insulators are

 PVC

 Glass

 Thermosetting plastics

 Rubber

She stands in front of the mirror examining her slim ninety pound body. In our eyes, she appears to be malnourished and frail, but in her eyes she sees herself as fat and revolting. She will continue to lose weight in order to fulfill her goal of looking thinner and sexier than the girls in Seventeen or on MTV. Nothing we say will change her mind. Her ears block the sound when we tell her she looks beautiful. The only voice she hears is her eating disorder telling her how overweight she is. The next time we see her she is as thin as paper and as pale as a ghost. That day we pay our final respects to a girl whose ears were blocked by an eating disorder and whose eyes were changed by the impact of the media.

The television and magazine advertising media should not portray females as Barbie dolls because these advertisements often lead to eating disorders in teenage girls. Teenagers live in a world where the media provides role models who teach them to value beauty and thinness over strength and character. If the television and magazine advertising media would portray a greater variety of body shapes and sizes, the standard of beauty would not be impossible for young women to achieve.

The average person sees 400-600 advertisements per day (Dittrich) which are saturated with Barbie look-a-likes. Majority of these advertisements are delivered by television and magazines. Studies found that 56% of television commercials and 50% of teenage girl magazine advertisements use beauty to sell their product (Body Image). They lather their product with small waisted, big breasted, perfect skinned models. Statistics reveal that the average young adolescent watches 5 hours of television per day (Morris). In addition, 50% of young women (ages 11-15) read fashion and beauty magazines (Jade). By the end of the day the media has impacted them on what is popular, what is acceptable and above all, what is attractive.

Why do magazines who promote self acceptance, healthy eating habits and girl power display Barbie look-a-like models? According to Lesley Seymour, former editor-in-chief of the popular teen magazine YM, thin begins with the fashion designers. "The big designers create all the big fashions … and what they really want are walking hangers. They want somebody who's almost so invisible that the clothes stand out more" (Self Image). If this is the case than why do the editors promote these designers and models? Seymour explains that there are two separate ways that magazines are put together the editors who make the creative aspect of the magazine and the publisher who sells the ads.

Buy cheap Thin as Paper term paper

Models have not always been so thin. According to Katie Ford of Ford Models, body types have changed drastically over the years. Twenty years ago the average model weighed only 8% less than the average woman; today, they weigh % less (Body Image). Ford explained that at the time of photo shoots only sample sizes of the clothing are made. The designers design for thin models making the samples tiny enough to fit your average two-three size model, unlike the average women who wears a size ten or larger. "Should designers choose to change, then there will be models to fit that need also" says Ford (Self Image).

Do we blame the fashion designers or the publishers for portraying such visuals? The publisher is the one who ultimately makes the decision to include or exclude these types of advertisements in the magazine. The Hearst Magazine Corporation is the leader in the teen magazine market distributing 14.45 million Seventeen magazines each month and .68 million CosmoGIRL! magazines ten times a year (Teen Titles). Imagine the impact young women would have if every page they flipped and every article they read in Hearst Magazines was free of thin messages. Imagine every model on every page wore a size ten, had crooked teeth, wore only a B cup bra size and even had an oily face.

Teenage girls believe that they can look like these super thin models so they go to extreme measures to be "attractive". In most cases, what is attractive is unhealthy for these young women to pursue. This is when eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa arise. Statistics show that ninety percent of individuals with eating disorders are teenage girls (Dittrich). Majority of these girls do not recognize their habits as a disorder and believe that they do not need help. Denial of such conditions can be extreme, leading from depression to death (Eating Disorders). It is more common for those with anorexia nervosa to deny their condition than those with bulimia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa affects one in every 400 adolescents and 0-5 percent are females (Anorexia). Those with anorexia nervosa experience an intense drive for thinness, fear of gaining weight and a disturbance in their body image. Studies show that one out of every three individuals with anorexia nervosa develops bulimia nervosa (Anorexia). Individuals with bulimia nervosa lead a complex lifestyle to accommodate their eating behaviors, usually associated with overeating. There are two types of bulimia anorexia purging and non-purging. Bulimics who purge engage in self induced vomiting or laxative abuse while non-purging bulimics resort to excessive dieting or fasting (Bulimia).

The physical dangers of eating disorders are endless. "The outward appearance of a person suffering from an eating disorder does not dictate the amount of physical danger they are in, nor does it determine the severity of emotional conflict they are enduring" (Eating Disorders). There isn't one part of the body that isn't affected by an eating disorder. It reaches your mouth causing tooth decay and gum disease. It reaches your blood causing diabetes, low blood sugar and high blood pressure which can lead to vision impairment, kidney failure and brain damage. It reaches your mind causing depression and mood swings. It reaches your womanhood causing menstrual loss, infertility, high risk pregnancy, birth defects, miscarriages and infertility. It can also reach your grave causing death if the eating disorder is not treated properly. "Anorexia". 00. Eating Disorder Center. 0. Jul. 00.

International armed conflict exists when there are official military or paramilitary forces performing acts of war in apparent furtherance of their governments policy . The government or the government of any country against which the acts are being perpetrated must also acknowledge that armed conflict is taking place. The complexity of conflicts either helps or hinders the UN's efforts to employ their laws with treaties. Therefore, depending on the circumstances the effectiveness of international law can be jeopardised.

For international law to be successful, the UN must evaluate a country's situation before deciding the best action to take in helping to restore peace. On April 6, 14, civil war broke out in Rwanda. The UN decided against entering the country to try and restore peace, instead, as the killing intensified, the international community deserted Rwanda.Western nations landed troops in Rwanda in the first week to evacuate their citizens, did so, and left.A UN mission was then created to keep the peace and assist the governmental transition in Rwanda, to intervene between the killers and civilians. It also tried to mediate between the RPF and the Rwandan army after the RPF struck from Rwanda to protect Tutsi and rescue their battalion encamped in Kigali as part of the Accord. On April 1, 14, the United Nations Security Council, at the behest of the United Stateswhich had no troops in RwandaBelgium, and others, voted to withdraw all but a remnant of UNAMIR.The Security Council took this vote and others concerning Rwanda even as the representative of the genocidal regime sat amongst them as a non-permanent member. After human rights, media, and diplomatic reports of the carnage mounted, the UN met and debated and finally arrived at a compromise response on May 16.UNAMIR II, as it was to be known, would be a more robust force of 5,500 troops.Again, however, the world failed to deliver, as the full complement of troops and materiel would not arrive in Rwanda until months after the genocide ended.Faced with the UN's delay, but also concerned about its image as a former patron and arms supplier of the Habyarimana regime, France announced on June 15 that it would intervene to stop the killing. In a Junevote, the UN Security Council gave it's blessing to this intervention; that same day, French troops entered Rwanda from Zaire.Despite overwhelming evidence of genocide and knowledge as to its perpetrators, United States officials decided against taking a leading role in confronting the slaughter in Rwanda. The US did use its influence, however, at the United Nations, but did so to discourage a robust UN response, In late July, however, with the evidence of genocide littering the ground in Rwanda, the US did launch substantial operationsagain, in a supporting roleto assist humanitarian relief efforts for those displaced by the genocide.

International law was not successful in this instance as it failed to return peace to a war torn country. Nevertheless, the UN does attempt to stop wars and limit it's effects. The organization continues to use its limited peacekeeping means, the passing of resolutions, sanctions, observer missions and peacekeeping forces. International law is very limited in it's power to achieve peace. A country can sign treaties agreeing to work with the UN, but can totally dismiss them during times of conflict. The UN has had some success in places such as East Timor and Mozambique yet its efforts have been limited in many other circumstances, due to the fact that the UN is not a permanent fixture in a conflicting country, their success is sometimes limited to the time its forces are in the country. Recognizing that serious violations of humanitarian law were committed in Rwanda, and acting under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the Security Council created the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) by resolution 55 of 8 November 14. The purpose of this measure is to contribute to the process of national reconciliation in Rwanda and to the maintenance of peace in the region. International law therefore only has limited effectiveness, as its enforcement is extremely difficult and sometimes unreasonable for countries to abide by in times of conflict.

. How effective has Australia been in responding to issues related to international military conflict?

Australia is well known for its willingness to enter into situations at the international level to seek an end to circumstances of military conflict. It has a strong track record of responding to conflict with humanitarian and other assistance. Under Article 51, the right of self-defence ceases once the Security Council has taken measures necessary to maintain international peace and security.

In a key role, Australia has always been quick to respond to the needs of other countries in crisis, whether it is channelled through a supporting role, an aid role, peace keeping or through representation in the UN. For example Australia was a representative in peace talks over the best way to bring balance back into Mogadishu and Bosnia. In many international alliances and treaties, Australia has always attempted to fulfil its international responsibilities and be an active voice on the international circuit. For example, Australia sent a peacekeeping force to Timor to assist in the wake of post-democracy conflict.

In accordance with its obligations to the UN, Australia has taken the view of the UN charter, which declares that international disputes must not be settled by force, international borders must be respected; and aggressors must not be members of the UN peacekeeping force . Australian troops are known for their service in conflicts in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific region.

Australia has participated in over twenty peacekeeping operations since the 150's. Since the 10's Australian troops have served in Somalia, Cambodia, the Middle East, Mozambique, Rwanda, Namibia, Western Sahara, South Africa and East Timor.

East Timor is a particularly good example of an instance in which Australia entered to restore peace under the UN banner. Australia's mission, was to reaffirm the inalienable right of the people of East Timor, to the right of Self-determination and independence, in accordance with General Assembly Resolution 1514 (XV).Australia's peacekeeping efforts, helped engage those rights for the people.

Australia's willingness to help other countries has enabled it to earn a reputation of great respect in the universal sphere as a country always willing to help those in less fortunate circumstances.

The Crucible The Crucible was a story with a wide range of characters. Not only appearance wise but, with different personalities a together. Many characters in this play thought differently from one and other. That is why this book had a few twists and turns to the story. In my profiles, I will display many different characters and theirs different mentality. First I will start with Mr. John Proctor, a.k.a. shoulder checker. John Proctor had always things on his mind. People were always on his mind. John Proctor was always looking out for his mistakes or errors, not because he was picky, but his enemies and competition were. John Proctor was always think out the final result of a situation, like when Betty was spiritually reposed early in the book (Act I, pages 6-1). John Proctor did not care about as Betty as much as the final opinion that the town would have on Proctor's white and pure name. Much can be said about Proctor's giving and understanding, but I don't want to waste that line. Proctor's caring and willing to give people thanks was not his best feature. Proctor was always thing about him, himself and no one else, except the final outcome of the whole situation. Take for example the fellow that wanted to get some tree off Proctor's land. Even though Proctor had probably no knowledge of the trees on his land, he still wanted a piece of the pie. Proctor wanted always money. He was money hungry and cheap. Basically Proctor was a would be if he could be. Proctor was always trying to fit into the high class crowd. He would flash his power and money on the middle class or "poorer people". But when Proctor was around people like Hale (Hale was well educated and stood up for thins kind of guy) he would try to act up to his class but he couldn't really because inside he really knew he couldn't. Then the one life ending, marriage-destroying fault that Proctor would ever do was sleep with Abigail. That action right there would kill Proctor not physically (yet) but mentally would haunt him later ... his wife. The perfect example was when Hale approached John and Elizabeth Proctor. John Proctor was asked if he could name the seven commandments (Act II, page 65). John Proctor (with Elizabeth by his side) was able to name them all except the most crucial one, for John Proctor, Adultery. With Elizabeth knowing all the information before hand, she was totally convinced that John Proctor was indeed guilty of committing the sin of Adultery with Abigail Williams. I think John Proctor did change towards the end of the play because of he mood and situation that he was in. At the end (Act II) John Proctor was being executed and he truly did love his wife. His moods and heart changed to tell Elizabeth how he really felt about her. John really did love her. John Proctor's attitude really did change form me, myself and I, to who is in need the most besides me. The next character I will talk about is Abigail Williams. Abigail was the sour apple of the bunch in this book, but really couldnt help it because its hard to be a sweet apple when the roots of the tree you came from were sour. Abigail was an orphan and all. She used her body to get things or people she wanted to. Even though Abigail was almost an adult, by many she was still basically treated like a child, to be seen but not to be heard. This was the attitude in town for all of the children. I think Abigail's most interesting feature is that she lies through thick and thin. At the end of Act II, Abigail (under oath) was lying in order to save herself. The point is Abigail didnt care to whom she is lying. It could be a judge or even Proctor it really didn't make a difference to her as long as she was able to save herself. The way she lies was sometimes quite entertaining. In Act III, Abigail thought there was a bird on the ceiling and did a good job convincing every one else that there was too. The reason Abigail did this again was to make everyone beleive that she was physco. Abigail was able many times to influence the court. She was able to have her ways with Danforth and Jugde Hathrone and the court (but many times the court was question who has the power). I guess Abigail has many split personalities. In act number one, Abigail goes threw many emotional changes and moods. Abigail goes from violent to peace keeping when she holds Mercy back (page 16). Then Abibail goes to quiet then mad (page 17). Then Abigail goes to flurts with Proctor (On page 1).. I found Abigail making many thearts to people but never did go threw with them. Like when Betty (In act one) was sleeping for a long time, Abigail would threaten her saying Get up or Ill beat you Betty (page 15).I guess coming from an unstable background, people can except some weirdness from a few individuals To put Abigail in a nutshell she is selfish, brutal, she has split personalities and she is only concerned about herself. I didnt see any changes in Abigail in the play. I think I can prove my point by showing what down the road Abigail became. Abigail became a Prostitute in Boston (Page 140). With an outcome like that, I think Abigail really didnt change much ever! Hale will be my last caracteur profile but certainly not the least caractor at all. Hale was the one out of them all I could fellow and understand what he was doing threw out the play. Hale was an educated man and he would do what he beleived. Mr. Hale is a man that is going into his forties. Since he was a man very highly educated, many people called him in for his expertice on witchcraft. I think that Hale had the most logical approches to any situations than any other caracteur. Hale would ague to everyone or anyone. Take the final act when Hale would battle it out with Danforth over many of the courts decisions. Hale would be able to analyse the sittuation that the court was not the most stertious system and Hale tried to change the courts decitions when Danforth was trying to reclame power of his own court (ironical isnt it?). I saw many verbal threats to Hale. The funny thing about all these threest is that either was were going to be affected physically now or spriatually later. But Hale was never scared of these threest. Hale was always always under the influence of God. The reason or event would be because of God. Still, Hale was a friend to many people like Proctor. When the summons come for Proctor (at the end of Act ]I[), Proctor would yell to the officers tht they should depart from his house. Hale tried to clam down Mr. Proctor but once a snowball start to roll, it is hard to freeze it in its tracks. But again its like thoses efforts that made Hale who he is. I fell that all theses caractuers made a big difference in this book (as I described above). My reason apon picking them varies from the protagonist (Proctor) to anognist (Abigail) to the man I felt kept the ball moving with his knowladge (Hale). I enjoyed reading this book because of the turning of events, the plot that led up to the climax. The finish was touching. For a guy to say it was touching, it was a good ending. I think the best title or subtitle for this book came from an album from a group called Colletive Soul. Their title from the album and the perfect title for this book Hints, Lies and Alligations

Order your "The Middle of Everywhere: The Worlds Refugees Come to Our Town" summary and critique. paper at affordable prices!Mary Pipher's The Middle of Everywhere is a wonderfully intelligent book that includes the stories of people of many lands who come to Lincoln, Nebraska, and her personal story as a cultural broker who appreciates and respects these people as well. The world has come to my town, also. Pipher writes, Most of my friends were of European background. As I've made friends with people of Mideastern, Latino, African, and Southeast Asia backgrounds, I've changed a great deal. I've stopped seeing myself as a member of a majority culture. Instead, I see myself as a member of a world culture that flourishes in my hometown. I believe Pipher exemplifies the liking theory demonstrated in Cialdini's book "Influence" not only in her statement mentioned above but the way that many of us, including myself, see ourselves as part of a majority culture. The liking theory is defined as "we like people who are similar to us…there is a natural human tendency to dislike a person who brings us unpleasant information, even when that person did not cause the bad news. The simple association is enough to stimulate our dislike."I found myself extremely guilty of the liking theory after the incidents of 11.I would see a Muslim person in the grocery store and automatically associate that person with Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban and the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City.I now realize how totally wrong I was, this man that I saw in the grocery store more than likely had nothing to do with the incidents relating to 11, however, I assumed that he was guilty by his association to the Muslim religion.

Especially interesting is Pipher's chapter on how American-style psychotherapy is not the method many of the refugee peoples use to heal from past traumas. She quotes a saying of her mothers There are three cures for all human pain and all involve salt--the salt of tears, the salt of sweat from hard work, and the salt of the great open seas. (She points out that, while once she interpreted the seas as an escape from family or memory, now she sees it as the beauty of the natural world.) I believe Pipher is relating the way refugee people heal from past traumas to the commitment and consistency theory demonstrated in Cialdini's book "Influence".These refugees have made a "…choice or taken a stand, we will then encounter personal and interpersonal pressures to behave consistently with that commitment…" as addressed by Cialdini. The refugees presented in Pipher's book have made a commitment to try and relieve their pain by doing whatever is necessary when they arrive in the United States to make their dreams come true and their pain from past tortures subside.I can also relate this to my dear friend Katie that I spoke of in my last essay.Katie came from Honduras where children were beaten with metal instruments and had nails driven through their hands with hammers while attending school.Katie loves the United States and believes in our freedoms and great democracy.Katie has taken a stand with her father on several occasions that she wants to say here, in Iowa.Katie's father wants the two of them to travel to Guam should he obtain the employment position he is seeking with the INS. Katie has worked hard for what she has, she wants to keep it, and she does NOT want to take the risk of ever digressing againshe has taken a stand and made this fact well known with anyone she comes in contact with.

Pipher believes that young people adjusting to the American lifestyle should carefully choose to incorporate the best of their cultural heritage with the best of what America offers. (The persistent media advertising and marketing, and all types of sleaze, for example, should not be accepted. Family and community, shared meals, fun, love and laughter, should be cherished.) She celebrates the energy and the hopefulness of these newest Americans. I feel that Pipher demonstrates quite clearly in her book the theory of social proof as demonstrated by Cialdini in his book "Influence". Social proof is "The greater the number of people who find any idea correct, the more a given individual will perceive the idea to be correct." When a refugee comes to America Pipher, as a "cultural broker" tries to warn and teach each of them of the harsh influences of social proof such as running a credit card up to it's limit (just because they can) and then how they plan on paying it back, purchasing automobiles from sleazy car dealers selling junk without doing prior research, purchasing food that will last weeks instead of soda pop and McDonalds that will only last a day.Just because the advertisements and behaviors of others make it appear that these items are in the best interest of "everyone" does not necessarily make it so.

In one of her discussions, Pipher supports the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and firmly maintains we are not practicing cultural bias when we seek to establish these basic rights all over the world. I agree with Pipher in that these Human Rights should be established all over the world as they were meant to be.This observation obviously relates to Cialdini's theory of scarcity, whereby "…opportunities seem more valuable to us when they are less available."At the current moment (from what I have read and heard) many, if not all of the Human Rights activated by the United Nations are not being adhered to throughout the world, what an absolute atrocity in my mind. For example Article 5 states, "No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment."I will once again refer back to my friend Katie and how the little girl in her classroom had a nail driven through her hand for not "keeping quiet" and nothing was done to reprimand the teacher.Obviously if there was any way these children had any means by which to stop these horrific incidents from occurring they would. But they can't, they aren't allowed the Human Rights set forth by the United Nations. Now that these rights cover Katie she does not ever want to go back to the situation where they weren't available as stated by Cialdini's theory.

Custom Essays on "The Middle of Everywhere: The Worlds Refugees Come to Our Town" summary and critique.

My hat is off to Mary Pipher, one of our own cultures wise women, a down-to-earth midwesterner who eats a lot of pie, and a world citizen whose heart is open to all. This book has opened my eyes to the consideration of becoming a cultural broker, and I found my life enhanced beyond measure after reading her book. I believe this book deserves the highest of recommendations and I will definitely recommend to others to read and enjoy it as well.
