Causes -

German Objectives

The first onslaught of Operation Barbarossa in 141 had carried the German armies to the outskirts of Moscow and Leningrad. In the summer of 14 Hitlers main target was the oil fields of the Caucasustheir capture would deprive the Russians of their fuel supply as well as give the Germans a shorter supply line. Simultaneously the German Sixth Army was ordered to take Stalingrad; a long urban strip strung out along the west bank of the Volga. If this was done successfully Stalingrad would serve as an anchor to the Northern flank of the larger German drive into the Caucasus oil fields and control of the city of Stalingrad would have cut Soviet transport links with Southern Russia via the Vulga River.

Why Stalingrad?

Cheap College Papers on Battle of Stalingrad

Hitler was determined to capture it as it was a major manufacturing centre and the key to the communications system of southern Russia, it also became an obsession of his because it simply had Stalin's name in it.

In German hands it would block Russian attempts to destroy German armies between the Don and Caucasus. But Stalin was equally determined to defend it, not least as it bore his name. His order was read out to every Soviet soldier - Not a step backwards!

By July 14 the oil fields seemed to be at Hitlers mercy. Then he changed his mind and ordered part of the forces that were to occupy them to the siege of Stalingrad instead. By diverting them to this ultimately futile attack Hitler wrecked the Caucasus campaign, which had a good chance of success.

The Battle -

In the Don and Volga steppes began one of the greatest battles in the Second World Warthe battle of Stalingrad. It was fought over a territory of 100,000 sq. Km. and continued with unmatched fury for six and a half moths. The battle in its various stages involved on the both sides more than two million men, over ,000 tanks, some 6,000 guns and mortars and more then ,000 planes. On August , when German Sixth Army forces, commanded by General Friedrich Paulus, reached the Volga at Stalingrad, Soviet and German infantry fought a long, house-to-house battle for the city. During the summer of 14 the Germans advanced to the suburbs of Stalingrad but failed to take the city itself against a determined defence by the Red Army, despite repeated attacks by the 6th Army under Friedrich Paulus and part of the 4th Panzer Army under Ewald von Kleist. By September they had reached the citys centre, where they encountered stiff resistance from the Soviet 6nd Army under General Vasily I. Chuikov. The citys Soviet defenders had been driven almost to the Volga by mid-October, but the Germans supplies were beginning to run low, their tanks were of little value in the constant street fighting, and winter was approaching. The Russian army occupying Stalingrad was fanatical. It contested every street and factory, whether still standing or totally destroyed. The state that Stalingrad was in made it impossible for the Germans to bring in tanks or any other heavy artillery. Territory which the Germans, with their superior firepower, had won by day was regained by night. At the same time Soviet armies, ultimately numbering an estimated 1 million men was being built up. On 1 November, preceded by an enormous barrage, forces under General Zhukov attacked on both German flanks. Within 5 days they had executed a pincer movement that encircled 50,000-00,000 German and satellite troops. Hitler forbade Paulus from attempting to break out to the rear, which he might have done early in the encirclement.

Goering promised him an airlift which never occurred. A relief army stalled in December and rations had to be reduced. Ammunition was runningSoviets trap more than 50,000 Germans in Stalingrad low. In January the

Russians called on von Paulus to surrender. Hitler ordered him to refuse, made him a Field Marshal and informed him that no German Field Marshal had ever been taken alive. The German position was now hopeless. Troops slowly froze, starved and ran out of ammunition. Pauluss forces were divided into two parts by a Russian push forward. By 0 January he was trapped in the basement of the large department store in Stalingrad where he had set up his final HQ. To Hitlers disappointment he preferred to surrender and live onFebruary he and his staff gave themselves up. By then 70,000 Germans had died in Stalingrad. The Russians took 1,000 prisoners, including twenty-four German generals. Only 6000 ever returned. Hitler himself said, The god of war has gone over to the other side'

Why is Stalingrad a turning point?

Stalingrad was a turning point in the war because it was the first time the German South-Eastern advance had been stopped this resulted in the Germans losing somewhere from 50,000 to 00,000 men in the battle that could have been evacuated if it was not for Hitler's stubbornness and some 600,000 dead German soldiers were found after the battle. After the battle of Stalingrad Soviet armies began the series of offensives that eventually led them to Berlin. Stalingrad proved to be the turning point of the military struggle between Germany and the Soviet Union. The battle used up precious German reserves, destroyed two entire German armies, and humiliated the prestigious German war machine. It also marked the increasing skill and professionalism of a group of younger Soviet generals who had emerged as capable commanders. Paulus' surrender was the first time a German Field Marshall had ever surrendered.

The Tempest, by William Shakespeare is the last comedy of his career. The main character, Prospero, is the exiled Duke of Milan. He lives on an enchanted island and seeks the opportunity to punish and forgive his enemies by raising a tempest that drives them ashore. At first glimpse, the storm in the play appears to be more than Mother Nature acting up. Just as the tempest is more than a storm; Shakespeare's The Tempest is more than what meets the eye. It is a symbolic tale of life in the theater, the art of acting and playwriting. The Tempest is filled with many references and comparisons to theater and acting. It also serves as Shakespeare's farewell to theater.

A comparison to theater is Prospero's stage. Prospero's magic island can be viewed as an illustration of a Shakespearian stage a place where stories are told, conflicts are brought to an end, and magical things happen. The island, which Prospero inhabits, is one of magic, just like as a stage is a place of magic. In a theater, the playwright controls his stage. The stage is what he tells it to become. Similarly, Prospero has complete control over the island and all whom inhabit it. When Prospero obtains magic, he has learned to become a playwright. Throughout the play, Prospero uses this magic to control those living on his island. Prospero uses it to bring his enemies to the island for the purpose of gaining control of them in an attempt to right old wrongs. Just as Prospero brings those he wishes to manipulate and change to his island with the tempest, a playwright brings actors into his theater to train them to play his roles. In the play there are other characters that represent different aspects of theater like the stage crew, the audience and the critic. These characters are Ferdinand, Miranda and Caliban.

Ferdinand, the son of the King Alonso, falls in love with Prospero's daughter Miranda. He begins to move logs for Miranda to prove that his love for her is true and claims, "but the mistress which I serve quickens what's dead/And makes my labors pleasures." (III, i, 6-7)Hauling logs, becomes Ferdinand's way of 'courting' Miranda, which causes her to fall madly in love with him. His act of moving these logs closely resembles the job of the stage crew in a play. A stage crew does everything they can to move the sets quickly in order to impress the audience. If Ferdinand represents the stage crew, then Miranda would represent the audience. Miranda is an extremely innocent character and her innocence can be associated with the audience before seeing a play for the first time. Before a play is ever seen, the members of the audience are 'virgins' to that play, just like Miranda is a virgin. The character Caliban, the slave of Prospero,is the hardest in the play to figure out. Caliban has a monstrous appearance and does some horrible things. However, his speech can be considered among the most beautiful in the play. While reading the play, the power struggle between the master and his slave becomes evident. Both Caliban and Prospero claim the island to be theirs and they try to get rid of one another. Caliban could represent the plays critic. This is because sometimes Caliban is harsh and brutal andyet other times, he can glorify the work of the playwright. This could explain why his speech is so beautiful. Even though on the outside, Caliban may appear savage, on the inside he speaks the truth about the beauty of the stage, the stage being the island.

Perhaps the most obvious reference to theater can be found in Prospero's epilogue when he says "But release me from my bands; with the help of your good hands." (Epi, i, 10). Prospero's words can be traced back to a renaissance theater, where the finale of the play was an epilogue of the main character asking for applause. Shakespeare does not close his play with Prospero's journey back to Naples to resume his dukedom. Rather, he closes it with Prospero thanking the audience and inviting applause. Prospero and Shakespeare are very similar. They are alike in the sense that they both gave up something they viewed important. Prospero gives up his magic and Shakespeare gave up his plays. Prospero broke staff, "removed (his) cloak" and "…drowning (his) book." ( V, i, 65-66).The Tempest is known to be the last work of Shakespeare, his final farewell to the theater. Through his representation of Prospero as himself, Shakespeare is thereby retiring his magic of playwriting. As stated by Prospero in his epilogue, "Let your indulgence set me free." (Epi, i, 0). Shakespeare wanted nothing more than to please his audience. Shakespeare would be free to retire when the audience applauded his work one last time, once he realized how much they enjoyed his final performance. Write your The Tempest-Major Theme research paper

It can easily be seen how Shakespeare uses the characters of his final play to say farewell to his audience for the last time. He may have found this type of goodbye to be the most appropriate to give the fans of his work. By writing a figurative look at the life of theater for his last play, Shakespeare is not only saying goodbye in a classy way, but also he is paying respect to the artist. All of Shakespeare's work ,can be interpreted in various ways. However, one thing is certain Shakespeare will always live on within the mind and the imagination of those who read his work. After all, as Prospero said himself, "We are such stuff /As dreams are made on, and our little life/Is rounded with sleep." ( IV, i, 156-158)

His process of character development, the Stanislavski Method, was the catalyst for method acting- arguably the most influential acting system on the modern stage and screen. Such renowned schools of acting and directing as the Group Theatreand The Actors Studio are a legacy of Stanislavskis pioneering vision.

Body Language is a form of non-verbal expression. There are several different elements of body language each having their own range of interior attitudes and emotions. These elements include

POSTURE- this creates impressions hence the way we sit, stand and move.

GESTURE- these simple ways in which we move our hands and feet express general feelings that may be hidden or obvious.

FACIAL EXPRESSIONS- our faces express feelings most out of any body part. It's in our eyes and mouth that these feelings are created.

The extra ordinary process of empathy is that in which the non-verbal communication sends and receives messages, it involves the ability to understand and feel the emotions being experienced by others. At on stage there was a monologue about an imaginary horse and the rider would pat and kiss the horse, expressing great respect for it.

Sometimes we recall feelings that we have experienced previous in our lives at a particular time or event. It's this feeling and emotion which brings emotional memory to life. Emotional memory is needed in cases which the actor has no previous experience. So they imagine how they would feel in this type of situation and trigger back old memories to when they once felt that type of emotion. This skill enhances communication and quick emotion acting.

In my monologue I play Laura a lady in her 0's to 0's that is "the other woman" in Kenneth's life. Laura is younger and sexier than his previous wife and has been with Kenneth for several years after finally persuading him to leave his wife and marry her. Laura hates being tied down to a house but likes to go out and have fun. She has no intentions of being a domestic slave.

To play a successful Laura emotional memory needs to come into use, as I have never been in a situation like this so therefore I have no experience playing her. Laura seems mad at the situation her life is in at this moment in time. So for me to play this role I have to relive a moment in my life where I was mad with what people want me to be and not what I am. These memories and feelings will help me express Laura's character in full depth, and help her release the person she wants to be.

To be a great actor people have to understand and be able to incorporate character objectives and motivation into their works. This encourages the acting to be more passionate and gives the character great depth. A well thought out example of this is the TV show 4. The main character Jack Bauer is an employee for the Counter Terrorist Unit, who works to keep the city of Los Angeles safe from terrorist activities. In the latest series Jack is working to try and stop a nuclear bomb from exploding in an unknown location in the city. But his only link to the bomb is the Nina Myers, the traitor who killed Jacks wife. This leaves Jack in an awkward situation as he has to work along side Nina to locate and disarm the bomb.

Jacks character is passionate about his family and those close to him. This is easily shown in the way Keifer Sutherland (Jack) reacts around Nina and his daughter Kim. Jacks anger and hatred for Nina is incredibly realistic although he does not let this affect the way he works whilst being in her presence. Jacks character requires extreme character objectives and motivation due to the situations he is put in, and in tern creates a suspenseful series in which the plot is never what it seems.

Observation is the unique ability to take characteristics off someone or something else you have observed. This can come into use when you are playing a "make believe character" for example there is a crazy lady who catches my bus and by watching her I can learn many ways in which to act like her. This skill can be used in many, many ways.

Lee Strasberg was born in Budanov, Ukraine, on 17th November, 101. The Strasberg family emigrated to the United States in 108. Strasberg lived in Lower East Side of New York and as a teenager he began acting in plays.

Strasberg studied in Moscow under the Russian director, Konstantin Stanislavsky, who had developed a system of training and rehearsal for actors which bases a performance upon inner emotional experience.

In 11 Strasberg joined with Harold Clurman to form the Group Theatre in New York. Members of the group tended to hold left-wing political views and wanted to produce plays that dealt with important social issues.

The Group Theatre disbanded in 141 and Strasberg moved to Hollywood. He returned to Manhattan in 147 where he joined with Elia Kazan to form the Actors Studio. Over the next few years he helped to train a large number of actors including Marlon Brando, Rod Steiger, Eli Wallach, Patricia Neal, Dustin Hoffman and Robert DeNiro. Lee Strasberg died on 17th February, 18.

By incorporating all these different techniques, will enhance and broaden your acting skills. And in return make you a better and more experienced actor.

Order your Imperialism paper at affordable prices! To Europeans in the late eighteen hundreds, imperialism was a fantastic idea. The prospect of unending natural resources, cheap labor, prestige and other such benefits would be tempting even today. However, Europeans did not attempt to see the other side of this miraculous money-maker. They saw themselves as heroes; rescuing the savage natives of foreign lands from their bleak future. While Europeans brought some helpful developments to their colonies, they also interfered with cultures and foreign policies of which they made no attempt to understand.

Southeast Asia was one of the very first places that Europeans colonized. Western influence began there as early as the time of Ferdinand Magellan's explorations. Before industrialization, people traveled to this part of the world out of curiosity, and for trade benefits. As people and nations grew wealthier and greedier they sought more than small profits; they wanted direct control. The Dutch were originally the most prominent western influence in southeast Asia, but eventually Britain and France expanded their influence to places such as Singapore and Vietnam. Because these colonies were so far away from the ruling countries, nations ran their new territory in one or both of two ways; directly and indirectly. By ruling a territory directly, local elites were removed and replaced with officials from the ruling country. For example, Burma was ruled directly by Britain.Indirect rule was when the local rulers remained at their positions but in a new colonial setting. The Dutch East Indies was a colony that was ruled indirectly. The French often ruled their territories indirectly, but they provided advisors for the local emperors or rulers. Indirect rule had a lesser effect on the original culture of the colony, but even so it brought great changes to southeast Asia.

Monarchy was the form of government of most parts of Asia. China, for example, had been ruled by dynasties for centuries. Vietnam had just recently reunited from a civil war before the French colonized and tore up the country. Indonesia too had some major empires, such as the Srivijaya Empire, before the Dutch invaded. When Europeans took over and removed the governments of these countries, they were destroying decades if not centuries of governments that the natives were familiar with. This caused havoc in some parts of Asia because many had known no other way of government. It also destroyed social classes. If the ruling family no longer held their position, where would the rest of the nation be socially? This is one example of the things Europeans did not take into consideration before conquering.

The most dramatic and also lasting effect that Imperialism brought to southeast Asia was industry. Before Europeans first journeyed eastward, there was not much in the way of modern technology. Many countries had no need to modernize; there were no current problems with the way things were; others did not want to.Lack of contemporary equipment was what led to the taking over of many areas. Once countries were taken over, equipment was brought there to retrieve raw materials. Factories were built to manufacture more and at a quicker pace. A common misconception many people held is that without Europe, Asian people would never be up to date and would be suffering today. Not all of the new machinery was beneficiary to the natives on whose land they were built. Most of the native countries saw little of the wide profit that the new equipment brought. Most of it went directly to the ruling nations and stayed there. In some cases, the economic changes hurt the natives. Factory workers were paid very little in order to maximize profit, working conditions were retched, and on top of that natives were made to pay high taxes. Not all of the modernization had negative effects, however. Along with factories came schools. Most of the schools did not provide excellent education, as many of the ruling powers feared revolts, but they did provide an expanse of knowledge that eventually led to ideas of freedom, and independence. Some of the earliest anti-imperialism revolts were formed by students for the University of Rangoon in Burma; they protested against the British, saying that they did not observe local customs.

Custom Essays on Imperialism

Culture was also widely effected by imperialism. Christianity was introduced and enforced strongly throughout Asia. Existing cultures were often destroyed or tossed aside by ruling nations or as an attempt to make peace with Europe and avoid invasion. Europeans had very little patience for other cultures, mainly due to social Darwinism. Social Darwinism made Europeans believe that they were better culturally than other countries. Because of this, they thought that they were helping the natives by forcing European beliefs and customs upon them.. Immigrant labor also brought a culture change to the east by way of cultural diffusion. People living in areas around European territories moved in search of a better life. Subsequently, European cultures were blended into surrounding cultures, but the mix often brought racial tension rather than friendliness.

Europeans interpreted imperialism as a way to get rich quickly. If they had seen it more as a compromising situation, a form of trade, Asia still would have found out about Europe's new technology without so many cultures being destroyed. If Europeans had truly had the Asian's interest at heart, they would not have tried to enforce their own way of life so strictly. So while the effects of imperialism helped southeast Asia, the same benefits could have taken place without the detriments.

Future of Management

Abstract

The future of management is headed towards big changes. There are many new

management concepts and practices, and the ever evolving shape of corporate

organizations. Will there be such thing as a blue-collar worker in the future?

The four functions of management must be used to be a successful manager.

The future organizations will increasingly be populated with knowledgeable

workers who require a different kind of organization and leadership from

what works for traditional industrial workers.

Future of Management

Future of Management

The definition of management is the act, manner, or practice of managing,

supervising, or controlling.A manger administers, maintains, relies on systems,

counts on controls, and does things right. As a manager your responsible

for the performance of all the people on whom your own performance

depends.A manager must keep the boss aware of everything that happens

within the organization. The first person on whom a managers performance

depends is the boss, and the boss is the first person for whose performace

a manager has to take responsibility.A manager must plan, organize, lead

and control their organization.Employees expect the manager to

effectively communicate and listen to them.To be an effective manager

one should walk around the organization and observe the operation, find

out what information or training that you may need to do your job

proficiently and build learning into the system.

Future of Management4

The definition of leader is someone who has followers. The foundation of

effective leadership is thinking through the organizations mission, defining it and

establishing it, clearly and visibly. The leader sets the goals, sets the priorities,

and sets and maintains the standards. As a leader you have to make

compromises. Leadership is being responsible for all actions.A leader

encourages their associates, pushes them to accomplish goals, gives them

praise and promotes them when needed. As an effective leader you must earn

trust. If there is no trust then you will not have any followers. You do not

have to like a leader to trust him.Trust is the conviction that the leader means

what he says.A leaders actions and a leaders professed beliefs must be

congruent, or at least compatible.Effective leadership is not based on being

clever; it is based primarily on being consistent. If your a good leader and

take care of your people they in return will take care of you.

Future of Management5

Change is opportunity. There is no predictablility.Restructuring the organization

around information something that will, of necessity, have to be done by all large

businesses. Organizations will eventually have to change its personnel policies, its

compensation policies, its promotion policies. The biggest change will be the

expectations and the vision of its management group. In many large companies,

middle manager and professionals have become alkenated from their company,

and especially from its top management. When companies downsize that usually

means that you will have to job hunt or relocate to another city/state.Loyalty and

trust is a two way street. People in middle management feel that the company

has deserted them when their asked to take pay cuts, severance pay, retire early

or just let go from the company.Lifettime employment for middle management

is a thing of the past.

Future of Management6

Management is creative problem solving. The creative problem solving is

accomplished through the four functions of management planning, organizing,

leading and controlling. The result is the use of an organizations resources

in a way that accomplishes its mission and objectives. In order for an organization

to be successful the four functions of management must be applied daily.Without

the use of these four functions, organizations will fail.A manager must plan for the

future.Be it short term or long term. There must always be a plan available.

A manager must be organized and have organization over his people.Schedules

must be followed, task delegated to team members and work coordination.

Success and failure are tied directly to the reasons for being in business, mission

and objectives.Success requires both effectiveness and efficiency.A good

manager influences his peoples behavior through motivation, communication,

group dynamics, leadership and discipline. The purpose of leading is to

channel the behavior of all personnel to accomplish the organizations mission

and objective. Finally a manager must have control.Performance standards

are set, based on the organizations objectives measuring and reporting actual

performance, comparing the two, and taking corrective or preventive action

as necessary.

The Disney film that I chose is Cinderella. Even though not every girl is like Cinderella; a girl can still imagine her self as a princess. Cinderella is a fairy tale that almost every kid likes and it is a great story even today. Cinderella, originated from the writings of Charles Perrault in France, in 167. Cinderella's father dies when she is only a little girl and so her jealous stepmother and ugly stepsisters has forced her to become a servant in her own home.

According to me the life style is portrayed simple and the way it should be. As a young woman, Cinderella remains a kind and good-hearted person. She is pretty; she knows what she is doing, she keeps a positive outlook with the help of her animal friends the chatty mice and chirping birds. Even though mice or regular birds dont talk in real life they potrayed it as a symbol of a good inside of the animal. There was no tokenism in this movie, Humans, animals, materials every thing was involved in it. There are different versions of this film and every film has a different ending to it. Despite all that has happened to her she still dreams of the day when she will find love and happiness once again. She thinks that her dream might come true when she listens that all the single maidens in the kingdom were invitated to a royal ball.

Everyone was entitled to come including Cinderella. There was a rumored that the Prince will pick his future bride in the ball. Her mother and her evil sisters dressed up and wanted to go to the ball. However, her bad sisters and mother always use to give her things to do and did not allow her to be the good or the prettiest one. The relationship between Cinderalla and the two dishonest stepsisters and the jealous stepmother is awful. Cinderella was alone in her home, so she needed help to get to the ball. Nevertheless, who would help her? A Fairy Godmother used her magic to make Cinderella perfect for the ball. The fairy godmother turns a pumpkin into a coach, mice into horses, and a rat into a footman, all to escort her to the ball. Her fairy godmother also provides clothes and glass slippers, and warns Cinderella that she must return by midnight.

Despite the fact that it is a great fairy tale, a child might get influence by this story and say well I am a princess as well I need things like Cinderella. In addition, they might want things right there and then when they see that the fairy mother provided Cinderella with the things she needed to make her look pretty for the ball. Cinderella goes to the ball but at the stroke of midnight, she leaves, dropping one glass slipper behind her. Describe how she was most beautiful, n prince fell in love with her! What does this shows?

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on disney critique

From there on she goes on with her everyday life, until the prince goes around the kingdom, looking for the woman who dropped her slipper so she can become his bride. Nobody in the kingdom can fit the slipper even her evil sister who hided Cinderella in the room so she cant see the prince. When Cinderella tried, the shoe on it fitted her, the godmother works her magic again, and gives Cinderella back her beautiful clothes. Cinderella forgives her stepsisters and stepmother, and she and the prince live happily ever after.Describe that how things went well with her, though always its not that way!

My favorite characters in the movie were the mice. They are some of Disneys most charming and colorful characters. I also loved the fact that the bad guys in this movie were not the typical villains in black. However, they were their own family who played evil roles in Cinderella's life but she still forgave them. No matter how bad a family member can be they will always stick together sometimes with out even reasoning. I believe family plays a big role in any ones life. If there is a family member, he or she can help you with certain manners like, financially, socially, economically and mentally. Although Cinderella did not have that support from her family, but she received it from the fairy godmother and the cute animals. It also shows that if there is no one there is always God with you. In Cinderellas case there was a fairy godmother with her.

Following r some of the things which i noticed in this movie.First of all the heroine of the story (Cinderella) continues to be treated harmfully by her stepmother and stepsisters. She consistently did all of the housework for them, and they became aggressive the more she worked. However, due to her good nature, she still loved them and did all of the work she got from them without any complains. The positive message in this film was that one could always dream and dont let his dream die always go for it. On the hand, whites are privileged, although they can buy what ever they want, they can not buy love. Every girl in her world is a princess. Although she will eventually marry one day and live happily ever after, there will always be consequences that a person faces.

If I might re-write the script, I would make things the other way around. Despite the fact that this movie was great and lovely, the producers should give an ugly person a chance of being the hero. In almost every movie that I have seen the bad guys are the ugly ones and the good guys are the prettiest and handsome ones. I dont believe it should just go on the character appearance, if the character is pretty physically doesnt mean that person is the prettiest, nicest one in his behavior and attitude too. Hence, its not necessary that every good looking person would be v.nice, and vice versa. I think this image of beauty should change.

Its hard enough to have and hold a job these days. But when an employer or co-worker mistreats you -- for example, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct -- you are on even shakier ground. It can be reassuring to know that you have some legal protections on your side to help level the working field. This paper will discuss the employment law topic, Sexual Harassment.First I will summarize the statutes of the law. Then the components of the major court decisions that have helped define the application of the statutes.Finishing with recommendations to management to assure that an employer is in compliance with all aspects of the law.

Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 164 (EEOC). Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to or rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individuals employment, unreasonably interferes with an individuals work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment (EEOC).

Sexual harassment can occur in a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to the following1. The victim as well as the harasser may be a woman or a man. The victim does not have to be of the opposite sex (EEOC). . The harasser can be the victims supervisor, an agent of the employer, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or a non-employee (EEOC). . The victim does not have to be the person harassed but could be anyone affected by the offensive conduct (EEOC). 4. Unlawful sexual harassment may occur without economic injury to or discharge of the victim (EEOC). 5. The harassers conduct must be unwelcome (EEOC).

Laws recognize two types of employment-related sexual harassment (1) quid pro quo and () hostile environment (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman 508). Quid pro quo harassment occurs when a person in authority requires sexual favors from an employee in exchange for a job advantage, such as getting hired or promoted or not getting fired (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman 56). Quid pro quo is a Latin phrase meaning one thing in return for another (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman 56).

In hostile environment harassment, the offender does not demand an exchange. Instead, a pattern of behavior makes the victims job so unpleasant that the persons work is affected (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman 55). The harassment may consist of asking sexual favors, making sexual comments, telling sexual jokes, or displaying pornographic pictures (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman 55).

Statutory basisIt shall be unlawful employment practice for an employer(1) to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individuals sex [gender]…. 4 U.S.C. 000e(a) Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when (1) submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individuals employment, () submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such individual, or () such conduct has the purpose or effect of unreasonably interfering with an individuals work performance or creating an intimidating , hostile, or offensive working environment.C.F.R. Section 1604.11 (a) (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman 4).

It is helpful for the victim to directly inform the harasser that the conduct is unwelcome and must stop. The victim should use any employer complaint mechanism or grievance system available (EEOC).

Prevention is the best tool to eliminate sexual harassment in the workplace. Employers are encouraged to take steps necessary to prevent sexual harassment from occurring. They should clearly communicate to employees that sexual harassment will not be tolerated. They can do so by establishing an effective complaint or grievance process and taking immediate and appropriate action when an employee complains.

When investigating allegations of sexual harassment, EEOC looks at the whole record the circumstances, such as the nature of the sexual advances, and the context in which the alleged incidents occurred (EEOC). A determination on the allegations is made from the facts on a case-by-case basis (EEOC).

Sexual harassment in the workplace presents an ongoing and growing risk to businesses operating in the United States. Today, the time is right for businesses to begin to manage their risk in this area more wisely. Preventing sexual harassment in the workplace requires a considerable investment of time and personnel. In the end, however, these costs will be offset by significant savings in legal fees and health-care costs. Companies will also benefit from increased worker productivity. From a purely business perspective, a company only stands to gain if it takes a no-nonsense, hard-line position on sexual harassment. Not only is it the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do.

While Brutus adores Caesar as a companion, he is against the ascension of any man to the position of ruler, and he worry that Caesar aspire to such authority. Brutus's stiff sense of honor makes it easy for Caesar's enemies to influence him into believing that Caesar must die in order to protect the republic. Brutus speaks to the crowd, reassuring them that they may trust in his honor. Brutus justly believes that Caesar's death will benefit Rome. Brutus's speech appeals to the crowd and to its love of sovereignty in order to validate the assassination of Caesar. Brutus did not slay Caesar out of a lack of love, but because his love for Rome was more important than his love of a single man. He insists that Caesar was great but ambitious: it was for this reason that he slew him. He worried that the Romans would reside as slaves under Caesar's management. They now conceded Caesar as a dictator and justify his assassination.

Antony similarly wins the crowd support, using convincing rhetoric to whip the mob into passion so great that they don't even grasp the fickleness of their support. When speaking a funeral oration over Caesar's body, he pleads with the masses to remove its support of Brutus and in its place condemn him as a conspirator Antony feels as though Caesars ambition was worthy of fame and power not of assassination. He requests the audience attention, for he has "Come to bury Caesar, not to praise him". He ads "He hath brought many captives home to Rome, whose ransoms did the general coffers fill" He asks rhetorically if such accumulation of money for the people represents ambition. Antony continues that Caesar understands the poor: "When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept". Antony pauses to weep. The plebeians are touched as Antony's allows his emotions to show.

Both Brutus and Antony Claimed to have loved Caesar, In antony's oration he states "My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar", and Brutus declares "Brutus' love to Caesar was no less than his" In each of the senator's speeches they seek the approval of the crowd and ask rhetorical questions to try to sway them in their favor.

At the age of 20, I was a headstrong young woman who thought, " I know everything."I did not realize my naiveté until I found myself in tears on Interstate 95, with $15 in my pocket and a half a tank of gas, driving a 1980 Yugo.

Against my mother's strong advice, I had left my home in Georgia to work as a live-in nanny in Jacksonville Florida.Without so much as an interview, I had been hired. My mother said it would never work, but what did she know? She had no faith in me.She wanted to dominate me.She didn't even know me!

"You'll be home within six weeks," she said. She was wrong.I lasted eight weeks, and didn't know how to get home. With echoes of "I told you so" ringing in my ears, I had to make a decision.Should I call my mother, for money, and crawl back home with my tail between my legs-or drive to Miami and take my chances?Filled with fear, I drove to Miami, hoping to find food, faith, and strength on the other side."What do I have to lose?"I half –told myself. I spent the next week riding the bus, trying to think of a plan. After many long summer days in the stench of urine and sweat of human sardines commuting in the heat, I thought there must be a better way.So I returned to my car and drove to West Palm Beach.

I found public showers at the beach, and there were crowds of happy people, peaceful and serene, unlike the sardines of the bus. Here I could think and plan.Buy Survior term paper

It was day nine that I blended into a company picnic. The aroma of the free hot dogs called me, and the crowd was large. No one notice me.And if they did, what was the worst they could do?Take away my hotdog?Tell me to leave? It was a risk I would have to take.

After successfully caging four hot dogs, I felt brave.I had been silent for days, lonely and scared. I began talking, first to children, then to the clown hired to entertain them. Finally, I approached some adults.

The following week, I reported to the company for work.I thought I would work a few weeks to earn enough money to get back home. That was two years ago.I am still at the same company; they just transfer me to Savannah, Georgia.

I view this as the most positive experience of my life.AlthoughI was frightened, hungry, and insecure, I learned that I am a SURVIVOR.

After encountering issues with a company that I worked for that faced issues with Diverse Employees, I realized that when I manage my own company in the future I will handle this issue differently. Many diverse employees are hired everyday all over the world. But opportunities for advancement are limited to those workers who fit easily to the mainstream or the larger culture. Because companies were not trained to overlook the employees origin, ethnicity, race or religion, These individuals were not given the opportunity to succeed in their careers. Although through strategic planning and observation R. R. Donnelleys developed a solution for companies to help in Managing Diverse Employees.

Benefits of Valuing Diversity

Diversity in the workplace is inevitable and provides many benefits for organizations. Organizations need internal diversity to help them meet the need of an increasingly diverse marketplace. (Katherine Esty; Richard Griffin; Marcie Schorr Hirch; 188)Another benefit from valuing diversity is the opportunity to develop employees and organizational potential. This means higher morale, because people feel valued for what they bring to the organization (R.R. Donnelley 1) No one really disputes that diversity is an important issue. Its been argued that those companies that truly understood how to manage a diverse work force will have an edge in attracting the best talent. (Kenneth Labich 16) I personally believe that serving markets with a diverse work force will make it easier to serve a multicultural company. Valuing diversity has benefits such as developing employees to their full potential and allowing successful interaction with diverse clients in the marketplace. Diversity also provides a broader and deeper base of experience for problem solving, creativity, and innovations. (R.R. Donnelley 1)

Buy cheap Managing Workplace Diversity term paper

Cost of Ignoring Diversity

According to (Patrick Quek, PFK 17) ignoring diversity can reduce productivity and creativity. The corporate image can be tarnished due to ignoring the issue. Financially the company will loose resources invested in recruiting and training when a dissatisfied employee leaves the company. Diversity is essential to the learning organization, in which teams of workers that cross-functional boundaries are engaged regularly in identifying and solving problems. (R.R. Donnelleys 1)

Major Issues in Todays Workplace

Today more than half the U.S. workforce consists of women and minorities; the economic situation is changing rapidly as a result of international competition. (R.R. Donnelley 1) Many policies within organizations originally were designed to fit the stereotypical male employee. Now leading companies are changing structures and policies to facilitate the recruitment and career advancement of diverse employee groups. (Kenneth Labich 16) Because the corporate world is dominated by a male culture, however sexual harassment affects women to a much greater extent. Women who are moving up in the corporate hierarchy by entering male dominated industries report a high frequency of harassment. (R.R. Donnelley 1)

Affirmative Action

Since the 164, civil legislation has prohibited discrimination in hiring based on race, religion, sex, or national origin. To some extent, the policies have been successful, opening organization doors to women and minorities. However, despite the job opportunities, women and minorities have not succeeded in getting into top management post. (R.R. Donnelly 1). Ultimately, the problem with affirmative action boils down to an unspoken and often unintended sexism and racism in organizations. While it is rare to hear or see blatant expressions of racism and sexism in corporate America today, many minorities believe a more subtle but just as dangerous form has replaced them.(Kenneth Labich 16)

Diversity Awareness Training

Top managers can help shape organizational values and employee mindsets about cultural differences. In addition, training programs can promote knowledge and acceptance of diverse cultures and educate managers on valuing differences. (Ibis Consulting Group Inc. 10) There are many training programs and seminars on diversity and culture that can help managers as well as employee deal with this issue. Another good way to help managers become more familiar with the different cultures is to put them in a workshop that has many other divers managers that are not familiar with your culture. Also expose these managers to many different foreign countries so that they will understand their employees and maybe relate.

Goal of Diversity Training

Hopefully through diversity awareness training it will help managers become aware of their own culture boundaries, their prejudices and stereotypes, so they can learn to work and live together. (Patrick Quek, PFK 17) Diversity training help people learn to reduce stress and negative energy in diverse work teams. Also to help people of varying backgrounds communicate effectively with one another and to groups. ( R.R. Donnelly 1).

Conclusion

In conclusion Diverse Employees should be treated equally. The increased diversity in organizations has provided opportunities for emotional intimacy and friendship between men and women that are beneficial to all parties. In addition undergoing an overall culture change effort that includes diversity and inclusion is on the right track, but only time will tell if managers can make the necessary changes in culture, structure, and policies to help the company reap the benefits of a diverse workforce.

Love, and other Country Charms

Can a simple country life help one forget about one's worries? According to Sir Walter Raleigh and William Carlos Williams, it might not be quite enough. In comparing the imagery, setting, and structure of "Raleigh was Right" and "The Nymph's Reply", it becomes apparent that both poets are suggesting that love, like pastoral country charms, doesnt last.

The imagery used in these two poems suggest that the pastoralBuy love term paper

charm of country life is no more charming than the everyday. The

charm withers and dies as life, and love, always do. Raleigh makes good use of diction in the second stanza, using the word 'philomel' to describe a nightingale. This shows us the Nymph is no simpleton, she is literate, and perhaps well read "And Philomel becometh dumb; the rest complain of cares to come." (7-8). The Nymph continues to talk about fading flowers and winter reckoning, again lending to the image of constant change andcreating a cold, fleeting feeling, perhaps not unlike the Nymphs attitude towards the shepherds pleas.

While reading "Raleigh was Right", Williams creates for me an

image of times-gone-by. He uses the pastoral tradition, but

questions it every step of the way, questioning even whether

such times existed. Willams' nymph lists different country charms and

asks how they could possibly bring the shepherd and herself any peace What can small violets tell us that growon furry stems in

the long grass among lance shaped leaves?(-5). The two poems effectively use imagery to show how life changes with the seasons, often becoming cold and desolate.

In comparing the setting of these poems, it seems clear that both

poets are suggesting that the bad days often outnumber the

good ones. Raleigh begins his poem with an if. If the country

were as charming and peaceful as the shepherd suggests,

then maybe the Nymph would be swayed to come to the country,

to be his love.Alas, this is not to be because, as the nymph replies, the country could not offer such peace of mind. Answering Marlowes poem, Raleigh uses the same examples of country charms, but tells why each one could never bring the peace the shepherd was offering "Thy belt of straw, thy ivory buds, thy coral clasps and amber studs, All these in me no means can move, to live with thee and be thy love"(17-0).

Raleigh effectively uses the same setting as Marlowe, off in the country somewhere. However, Raleigh sheds the setting in a different light. He does this by creating a sense of uncertainty. In contrast, Marlowe created a sense of security for within his poem for the nymph. In "Raleigh was Right", Williams begins his poem with we cannot.... Immediately the setting is away from the country, looking in from a realistic point of view. Again, Williams presents many reasons why the life promised by the shepherd couldnt possibly be. In the second stanza, Williams calls into question whether such peaceful country days ever existed by exclaiming "long ago! Whencountry people would plow and sow with flowering minds and pockets at easeif ever this were true." (10-1). The setting of these poems suggest that the nymph sees a more realistic view of country life that Marlowes shepherd was not willing to share.

The internal structure of both poems differ, but each

geared towards convincing the shepherd that country life isnt

as easy and carefree as he is suggesting, and that the love he seeks won't be either. Raleigh answers Marlowe's poem by using a list to formulate his argument against the shepherd's pleas, not unlike the list Marlowe created in his poem, to persuade the nymph. Raleigh lists the pastoral charms, and denounces them as never being able to bring such peace Thy gowns, thy shoes, they beds of roses,

Thy cap, thy kirtle, and thy posies, soon break, soon wither, soon forgotten; In folly ripe, in reason rotten(1-16). Here, the Nymph is saying that the shepherd is foolish if he believes such mundane things could bring her peace. She sees no reason for her to believe him.

Williams differs in his approach in letting the shepherd know why the Nymph is far from convinced. Rather than use the same list as Marlowe or Raleigh did, Williams uses a descriptive structure to show the shortcomings that country life might offer. In stanza two, he describes what country life may have been like at one time, and in stanza three, goes on to describe how the nymph sees love blooming on the country plains. That is to say, nonexistent "Not now. Love itself is a flower with roots in a parched ground. Empty pockets make empty heads." (14-16)

Just as Raleigh did, he questions how such country charms could possibly bring peace of mind. The internal structure of these poems clearly suggest that love cannot be assured in an uncertain, perhaps unrealistic, country lifestyle.

In conclusion,Raleigh and Williams have answered a resounding no to Marlowes shepherd. Furthermore, Williams' uses 'us' throughout his poem, suggesting that he thinks such unfounded pleas are useless for anyone to listen to, not just the nymph. Both poets use the imagery, setting and structure effectively to tell the shepard why country life isnt so charming, and as a result, why any love between them won't bloom. The reason for the Nymphs reply then, is that love doesnt last, and country charms arent a good enough reason for her to move to the country and be his love.

RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION

1.Do you think that legislation is useful in ensuring that there are equal opportunities for all in employment? (i.e. do laws change attitudes ?)

Legislation has a number of effects, that doesn't necessarily mean it'll change an individual's attitude. Legislation forces professional attitudes, meaning that people will hire certain ethic groups for example, but it may not mean the employer is happy about it. A lot of people's beliefs and attitudes come from the way that they are brought up and each employer is different, however the legislation will help for a certain standard of the amount of ethnic groups etc. in a particular place of work. This doesn't mean that the organisation gets the best man for the job, but it does stop to some extent the discrimination that might be in an organisation. These days it's more about "me", where as 50 years ago it was more about "community", this means that there is no longer a partriarticle society in the UK any more. Basically this all means that even though legislation will force companies to hire equally this doesn't mean that the managers will be happy about it, but they must otherwise they may face heavy fines etc. these facts don't make people change their attitudes, it only forces them to do act like they have.

.Is positive discrimination a worthwhile policy for an organisation and for society in general? Is there an overriding justification for positive discrimination?

Even though it is called "positive" discrimination, it still is discrimination; certain people may be over looked for a job just because there's two many of that race etc. of people in that company already, meaning there not getting the best man for the job. However it does level the playing field for ethnic groups. There are problems with fairness and the stereotyping of types of people; an example of an institutionally racist company is ford and the Dagenhem plant. Here the company took a photo of all the staff, but before releasing the photo for production as a poster or to be printed in newspapers etc. all the black and other ethnic workers in the photo were altered to look white. This was a disaster for the company once the alterations were notice. This type of incident can be very harmful in the public eye.

.Why is the interview such a popular method of selection, and what are its advantages and disadvantages?

This is a popular method because it can give and interviewer a standardised way to analysis possible candidates for a position in an organisation. The questions asked can be set out before hand and suitable answers can be identified before an interview even takes place in order to gauge the preferred type of person that the company may want. Also a time scale can be formed in order to interview as many candidates as possible while asking the questions required. There are a number of advantages that can be gained from using this interview method, one is that the interviewer has a face to face meeting with the candidate, and if the interviewer is qualified he /she maybe able to judge peoples characters from a brief chat. This can help to pick out the more suitable candidate.

There are a number of disadvantages also with this method, it may be hard to identify the good candidates from the bad because candidates may find it hard to act their normal way under the stress of an interview, often the waiting part before the interview begins can be to much for some and can through their personality off. This means that in the interview they may seem to be a different person. The opposite of this, is that candidates may purposely put on an act to fool the interviewer in order to get the job, but they may not be the "best man for the job". This is known as the halo effect. Another disadvantage of such a method is that the interviewer may have a certain bias towards the person that they are interviewing, this is trying to be regulated by a number of laws passed on equal rights, however here it is hard to identify.

4. Analyse the problems associated with psychometric testing, and the underlying assumptions on which this selection procedure is based.

One of the major problems with this type of testing is that the candidate being interviewed may only answer questions the way they think the interviewer wants them to answer. This may not a deliberate thing to fool the interviewer, but just a reaction to stress or a reflex.

Another problem is the way the interviewer defines the measurement of personality, and how a person gets his/her personality traits. There are two theories that show how a person may get their personality; one theory is that a person gets them personality in a Homothetic way. This means that a person is born with their personality and it is kind off passed down from parents, with in this theory there are a number of categories that a person may fall in to, these include neurotic, introvert etc.. the other theory is called Idiopathic, this works on the assumption that a persons personality is a product of his/her environment, and that every influence in a persons life will allow their personality to change.

It could be argued that neither of these theories are correct and that every ones different so how could they be put into categories.

Kate Chopin's The Awakening, focuses on the revolt of the main character, Edna Pontellier, against her role and position in society. As Edna awakens to her body, her senses, and her role as a woman in late nineteenth century America, she begins to challenge societal laws and traditions. Not only does she neglect her obligations to friends and family, but also she ignores societys expectations of her as a woman of wealth and stature.

Edna senses the forces that ultimately drive her to the sea after a disagreement with her husband, Leonce, early in the novel. When Leonce demands that Edna come in from outside to retire, Edna begins to understand that he regards her as an object of possession.Though Edna refuses to appease her husband an indescribable oppression, which seemed to generate in some unfamiliar part of her consciousness, filled her whole being with a vague anguish.Edna, however, does not yet realize she is awakening.A certain light [will begin] to dawn dimly within her,--the light which, showing the way, forbids it.

Madame Reiszs musical performance in Chaptertriggers Ednas first true awakening. Her intense physical reaction to the sound of the keys of the piano, including trembling, choking, and crying, are paralleled by the arousal of passion within Ednas soul.Chopin suggests that this was the first time [Edna] was ready, perhaps the first time her being was tempered to take an impress of the abiding truth. Later this same evening, Edna soars beyond the limits fear imposes upon her in an attempt to capture a sense of independence as she swims far out into the sea alone.

To Edna, the sea is the place where the individual is free from both the evils and the responsibilities of communal life. This perhaps explains the feeling of exultation and the sense of power to control the working of her body and soul that overtake Edna. While reflecting on her experience in the sea and Madame Reiszs music, Edna remarks, A thousand emotions have swept through me tonight. I dont comprehend half of them. . .I wonder if any night on earth will ever be like this one. From this point on, there is no turning back for Edna. Her awareness continues to grow until her final return to the sea.

The newfound strength and individuality that learning to swim alone in the sea affords Edna enables her to release her sexual nature.Ednas friendship with Robert Lebrun takes on new meaning for her as she sits alone with him after her swim No multitude of words could have been more significant than those moments of silence, or more pregnant with the first felt throbbings of desire.Perhaps it is more accurate to call this a romantic awakening than it is to call this a sexual awakening. It seems more appropriate to assume Edna is beginning to yearn for love and human connection with the opposite sex, not some lustful encounter, since she has not yet awakened to her physical self.

As Edna sails to a neighboring island called Cheniere Caminada with Robert the next day, she identifies a sense of freedom within herself--freedom from the constraints her duties as a wife and mother impose upon her. Later this day Edna becomes aware of her body and its natural beauty after Robert compels her to rest at a friends house.Edna, left alone to sleep, removes most of her restrictive clothing and begins to closely observe her body.Though Ednas return to the Grand Isle is a return to domesticity--which Edna, at this point, associates with burdening responsibility,--she was seeing things with different eyes and making the acquaintance of new conditions in herself that colored and changed her environment.

Roberts move to Mexico in Chapter 15 forces Edna to recognize the symptoms of infatuation for the first time.Edna longs for Robert throughout his absence, but she lusts for another man when she returns to New Orleans at the end of the summer.Alcee Arobin pleased her at last, appealing to the animalism that stirred impatiently within her. This awakening to sexual desire is followed by an awakening to sexual fulfillment when Edna actually becomes physically involved with Alcee. The first kiss of her life to which her nature had really responded, however, was not the kiss of love which had inflamed her, because it was not love which had held this cup of life to her lips.

After months of Ednas anticipation Robert returns home from Mexico and the two are finally able to proclaim their love for one another. There was no human being whom [Edna] wanted near her except Robert; and she even realized that the day would come when he, too, and the thought of him would melt out of her existence, leaving her alone.Edna becomes convinced that human connection is not possible for her. As Ednas awakening progresses throughout the novel, she becomes increasingly aware of her solitude. The people she cares about, even Robert continually leave her alone.

Edna comes to realize that her aloneness is a product of her desire for spiritual emancipation. She is not willing to sacrifice self-fulfillment in order to uphold the traditions and expectations of society.Every step which she took toward relieving herself from obligations added to her strength and expansionism as an individual. But Edna knows that complete control over her own life will only come through total relief from social commitments. Thus, she returns to the comforting touch of the sea that enfold[s] the body in it soft, close embrace. As Edna removes her clothing and enters the sea, she is reborn into a world free of constraints, the world she has longed to encounter throughout The Awakening.

When I first heard that for our grade twelve retreat we would be going on an inner street walk I dreaded going.I thought it would be kind of cruel to walk around the streets of Toronto and stare at homeless people all day.But that was not what this retreat was about at all.It was about learning what those less fortunate then must us go through every day to survive. It was about realizing that we are very fortunate to have a roof over our head and food to eat each day. It was an amazing, life changing but also sad experience.I learned some things from our group leaders that I will never forget.

Scooby and Kiesha were the leaders of the group I was with.We walked though the Aids memorial and read all the names of the people who had died from the disease. It was sad to see that even babies had been killed by Aids.Kiesha explained how easily Aids can be spread among street kids.Kiesha told us that many people are walking around Aids and do not even realize it.Others who know they have the disease refuse to tell the people they are sexually active with that they have contracted Aids because they are afraid of being alone. We talked about the park in which the Aids memorial was in and how common it was to see people dealing or doing drugs there.Scooby showed us where he used to sleep and we watched the people stare at us as we pretended to sleep in a doorway of a building. We went to a community centre where they give out free clothes to those who need them. The lobby of the community centre was filled with pamphlets on aids, homosexuality, drug abuse, child abuse, and assault. We discussed why we would not find any of these pamphlets in any Ajax community centres. We went into the man's washrooms and saw that there were needle disposals in them and again discussed why we would not find them in an Ajax community centre. We walked to the edge of Boys Town where male prostitution occurs.Scooby made us close our eyes and imagine that we lived there and that we needed to prostitute ourselves to survive. We went to a dumpster behind a restaurant where many homeless people go to get food.Scooby and Kiesha also took us to a bookstore that was specifically for gay and lesbian people. We looked at the children's section of the store where we found many books for children growing up in a gay or lesbian family.Scooby asked us to panhandle for fifteen minutes to experience what street kids go through daily. We were ignored, given dirty looks and even yelled at by the people we asked for money. We did not end up getting any money. We later learned from Patrick that Scooby is homeless, lives under a bridge and still panhandles. All the members of my group were shocked to learn this about Scooby; we never would have guessed that he was homeless himself.

Even though I did not panhandle for very long, I learned a lot from the experience. I learned how if felt to be regarded as disgusting and a burden on society. Some people I asked for money gave me the dirtiest looks; others just ignored me and kept on walking by.I learned how it felt to be totally stereotyped and looked down upon because I was begging for money.Kiesha and Scooby told us how a lot of people think that the homeless are just lazy; drug addicted, bums, which is definitely not the case. Most people who live on the street are kids who have run away from home because they were being abused or mistreated. However, Scooby and Kiesha did agree that about ninety-five percent of people living on the streets do use some sort of drug, such as alcohol, marijuana, crack, ecstasy, etc.Often times they use drugs to get away from their past or the pain they feel inside. They use drugs to get away from reality, so they do not have to deal with life.Unfortunately the idea that people on the streets are too lazy to get a job is not true. Most people on the street cannot get a job because they do not have a fixed address, and they cannot get a fixed address because they do not have the money to pay for one.

When we returned to Sanctuary it was moving to hear the experiences of the members of other groups. Many of them shared the stories of the group leaders and their experience of being homeless.I thought it was amazing that all these homeless and former homeless people came together to created Sanctuary and teach other kids about life on the street.

I think that there are social sins at work here.We cannot ignore those who need our help especially if we are in a position to aid in some way.As Christians we should be following the Corporal Works of Mercy and feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and sheltering the homeless. We should be giving those less fortunate then us the dignity and respect they deserve. The scripture passage (Mathew 51-46) reveals that when you are kind and helpful to someone less fortunate you are kind and helpful to God; when you are cruel and hurtful to someone less fortunate you are treating God in the same way.

There are many agencies in our community that deal with poverty and homelessness. The Salvation Army and The Goodwill sell used clothing and furniture to those who are in need.St. Vincent du Paul collects clothing blankets and food for the homeless and also runs a soup kitchen. There are many shelters for women and children who come for abusive households. The kids help line is there to offer any advice or aid any child who needs help.Local schools, churches and businesses run food and clothing drives during the holidays for those needy families in our community.

I think that this retreat was a good experience for all.I was able to see the challenges people on the street face day after day.Although I did not experience the full extent of the difficulties street kids must over come, this experience still made me greatful for all the things I have.
