The Negro writer has mirrored his thoughts in aims of pleasing white America. As Wright points out, the writer must realize his role as that of creating "values by which his race is to struggle, live, and die" (6).Langston Hughes in "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain" echoes this sentiment by writing, " there lies an American Negro artist who can escape restrictions placed upon him, and explore the vast field of unused material for his art… exploring his racial individuality, his heritage of rhythm and warmth, and his incongruous humor" (Langston Hughes).Wright suggests that the Negro writer, "should unify his personality, organize his emotions… which will lead to freedom in thought and feeling for the writer" (70). Sadly one is presented with the concept that being Negro and expressing his or her true thoughts is worthless. The Negro artistic creation is assumed to be inferior by whites because it is not simply about the aesthic beauty in such works of art.The Negro writer remains virtually unknown until one has gained the approval of publishing houses ran by white America.According to Langston Hughes,African American communities are not lacking great authors. However, it takes titles being mentioned on a best sellers list created by a media dominated by white America, before members of the African American community will accept such authors as worthwhile writers. The Negro writer should have the soul and ability to express himself or herself freely. If such works are filtered through a white or damaged lens, a true depiction of African Americans cannot be reached.

Wright seeks to explain that the writer must draw from his own personal experiences, not to be dictated by white America. This is achieved by incorporating African American culture, creating works that soundly voices the Negro's way of life.Wright parallels this argument to Langston Hughes' in "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain" who asserts,

"we younger Negro artists who create now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame. If white people are pleased we are glad.If they are not, it does not matter. We know we are beautiful and ugly too.The tom-tom cries and the tom-tom laughs and if colored people are pleased we are glad.It they are not, their displeasure does not matter either. We build our temples for tomorrow, strong as we know how, and we stand on top of the mountain, free within ourselves" (Langston Hughes).

RnJ vs MND

If you order your essay from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on RnJ vs MND. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Specify your order details, state the exact number of pages required and our custom writing professionals will deliver the best quality RnJ vs MND paper right on time.

Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in RnJ vs MND, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your RnJ vs MND paper at affordable prices! The two plays of William Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" both share some easily noticeable similarities and some not so noticeable similarities even though one is a tragedy and the other is a comedy. If you look hard enough you may be able to notice those similarities, for example, Both plays have a pair of lovers with another male character chasing the woman in the pair. In Romeo and Juliet's case there is Paris who wants to win Juliet's love and in Midsummer Night's Dream there is Demetrius chasing after Hermia who is in love with Lysander. In this similarity is another similarity, if you have read both plays then you may have noticed that in both plays, the parents of the woman in the pair of lovers disapproves of her seeing the person she loves but instead want her to marry the man who is chasing her as mentioned in the previous statement. Other similarities can also be noticed, for example, both plots revolve around love and love's difficulty and in both plays the lovers seek help from another, in Romeo and Juliet, the lovers seek friar Lawrence to wed them and help them escape the wrath of their families and in Midsummer Night's Dream the lovers seek Lysander's aunt who can shelter them. One of the hard to notice similarities is that both plays can be changed to a tragedy or a comedy with a few minor changes to the plot. There are many other similarities in the two plays, just look and you will notice many!

In both plays, the lovers are chased by another but the other person has the approval to wed the woman of the pair from her parents. In Romeo and Juliet, the Capulets all approve of her marrying Paris even though Juliet does not want to marry him. In Midsummer Night's Dream, Egeus, who is Hermia's father, wants Juliet to marry Demetrius even though she is in love with Lysander. In Romeo and Juliet, the families are feuding so the Capulets naturally disapprove of Juliet in love with Romeo. In A Midsummer Night's Dream, Egeus says to Theseus

Full of vexation come I, with complaint

Against my child, my daughter Hermia.

Buy custom RnJ vs MND term paper

Stand fourth, Demetrius. My noble lord,

This man hath my consent to marry her.

Stand forth, Lysander. And, my gracious Duke,

This man hath bewitched the bosom of my child.

Egeus tells Theseus that his daughter will marry Demetrius, not Lysander. Hermia replies . . . If I refuse to wed Demetrius, Egeus replies, Either to die the death, or to abjure forever the society of men. If Hermia does go against her fathers wishes, and weds Lysander, she will either be put to death, or be forced to become a nun.

Both pairs of lovers also seek help from another. Juliet and Romeo seek Friar Lawrence who weds them and also will try to help them escape their feuding families, and Lysander and Hermia seek Lysanders aunt, who lives in the woods near Athens she can harbor them from Egeus and the others and provide them with shelter.

Both pairs of lovers also have the same character type. Both are young, their love is prohibited by their parents, and both seek the help of an adult.

Both plays can be changed to a tragedy or a comedy with a minor addition or change to the plot. In the ending of A Midsummer Night's Dream, if Egeus attended the wedding and killed Hermia like he said he would if she married Lysander, then it would have been a tragedy. Romeo and Juliet could have been a comedy if the two families did not prioritize their pride so much and prohibited true love, this play may have been a comedy. For example, if Tybalt did not care about his pride so much, many of the horrible events would not have happened like the death of Mercutio and eventually leading the part where Romeo sees Juliet's body (he thinks she's dead) and drinks the poison he bought from the apothecary and kills himself. Then Juliet awakes from the effects of the drug she used to fake her death and sees her dead lover lifeless from the poison, she then stabs herself.

Both plays also have a key character who affects the category the play is put in (tragedy or comedy or tragicomedy), In Romeo and Juliet it is friar John who fails to deliver the message to Romeo that Juliet was faking her death and that she was not really dead. In a Midsummer Nights Dream there is Puck who fails to administer the love herbs correctly and therefore resulting in many of the comedic events in the play.

Both plays are alike in many ways, be it their characters or plots, both plays are more similar than different even though they are in completely different categories. With a few simple modifications, both plays could have been changed to the opposite type and made more similarities than ever before. Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream are one and the same if you just look hard enough.

Order your Tess of the D'Urbervilles paper at affordable prices with custom writing service!A ghostly double of a living person, especially one that haunts its fleshly counterpart" is the description of a doppelgänger as given in Dictionary.com.The use of a doppelgänger as the main theme of a novel was very popular throughout most of the nineteenth century. It was used by many famous authors, such as Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Edgar Allan Poe. Although both authors employ the doppelgänger motif, the function of the double differs markedly in their two works.

In both The Double and "William Wilson" the doubles employed share many similarities to their original. They both share the same name and face.In The Double, Petrovitch Golyadkin first notices the fact that there is someone in the office who shares a strikingly similar resemblance to himself, and he is quite disturbed by this fact."The figure that was sitting opposite Mr. Golyadkin now was his terror, was his shame, was his nightmare of the evening before; in short, was Mr. Golyadkin himself…." (4)Golyadkin is evidently shaken by this replica of himself that seems to shadow his every move and persist in appearing at every one of his familiar haunts."William Wilson" also uses many of the same themes as The Double. As in The Double, William Wilson's doppelgänger also shares the same appearance and name.William Wilson and his double "bore the same Christian and surname…" (450)It is also revealed to Wilson that "my namesake was born on the nineteenth of January 181and this is somewhat remarkable coincidence, for the day is precisely that of my own nativity." (45).The revelation of these things causes a great rivalry between Wilson and his double, which follows him to his death.

The function of Golyadkin's double in the The Double is open to interpretation. One interpretation is that Golydadkin's double is simply a fabrication of his unstable mind that is used to play out what he despises in human nature, but also what he wishes he were able to do.It is apparent that many of the things which Golyadkin hears and sees do not correspond with the ways that others view things. When Golyadkin is discussing with Anton Antonovitch the identical similarities between himself and his double, Antonovitch's response is one of quick agreement, which implies his willingness to pacify Golyadkin's unstable mind."To be sure," said Anton Antonovitch, after a moment's thought, speaking as though he were struck by the fact for the first time…" (44)Within Golyadkin there is also an extreme hatred of those who put on false appearances. "I don't like insinuations; I've no taste for contemptible duplicity; I'm disgusted by slander and calumny."These are his exact words stating his strong opinion. But within him there is also a strong need to be accepted by his peers into decent society. This deep inner longingis evident through his many masquerades and elaborate facades. In short, his double is the embodiment of what he truly wants to be.

In "William Wilson" the double functions as Wilson's conscience and reason for torment. In every situation where Wilson is about to make an unwise choice, his double appears. In one situation, when Wilson was about to win a high stakes card game by cheating, his double appears just in time to ruin his devious scheme."Please examine, at your leisure, the inner linings of the cuff of his left sleeve, and the several little packages which may be found in the somewhat capacious pockets of his embroidered morning wrapper" (464). After Wilson's double reveals the scheme, Wilson is promptly kicked out of the game. Many such instances like this occur because of his double. These episodes eventually lead to his breaking point.Wilson is so tormented by his double's constant pursuit and reprimands, but as he flees his home, but as he says, "I fled in vain" (465). Wilson is fleeing himself and what he knows to be right; ultimately he must decide between what is right and what he desires. In their final confrontation, Wilson's chooses his selfish desires and this eventually leads to his own demise,- "….how utterly thou has murdered thyself" (46). Wilson realizes that by killing his conscience, he has destroyed himself.Help with essay on Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Both Dostoyevsky and Poe employ the doppelgänger motif, but the effects vary greatly.Dostoyvesky uses the doppelgänger to express the emotions of a mentally unstable mind.Poe uses the dopplegänger to bring about the inner struggle between right and wrong. These are two examples of how the doppelgänger can be used to prove different points as is expressed through both authors' works. Using doppelgänger is an effective tool for communicating the inner struggles ofhuman nature.

A woman commits adultery and bears a child out of wedlock. A minister sins against his god and his convictions. A jealousy maddened husband seeks his revenge.

Sounds like a soap opera, right? But its not. Its one of literatures greatest classics, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The female lead is Hester Prynne, sent ahead from Amersterdam by her husband to settle in a new town. As time passes and her husband does not appear, it is assumed that he has died in the harsh environment of late seventeenth century New England.

Hesters name comes to mean something entirely different to the Puritan townspeople when she is found to be with child and consequently gives birth to a daughter, named Pearl. Hester refuses to reveal the name of the babys father, choosing instead to take her punishment alone. Her punishment is simple she stands on a scaffold before the condemning eyes of the whole town for three hours, and is sentenced by the town fathers to wear always on her breast a scarlet A, meant to stand for adultery. It is only by the interference of the towns minister, Reverend Dimmesdale, and the assumed fact of her husbands death, which saves Hester from the gallows.

On the day of Hesters release, a stranger comes to the town, calling himself Roger Chillingworth, a doctor. He examines Hester in her jail cell, and we discover that he was once her husband. He agrees to keep the secret of their marriage, as much for his sake as for hers. He also implores her to tell him who the childs father is. When she refuses, he proclaims that he will make it his purpose to discover for himself the childs origin.Order Custom Short conclusion on Scarlett Letter paper

As the years pass Pearl grows into what Hawthorne calls an elfish child. She seems mischievous and contrary in all things. Also during this time, Roger Chillingworth has attached himself as a doctor and companion to the Reverend Dimmesdale. There is a moment of fright for Hester when she fears the town fathers will take Pearl from her, because they fear that the child will not receive proper religious training with Hester. Through the support of Reverend Dimmesdale, Hester is allowed to retain her child.

While Pearl grows older and more questioning, while Reverend Dimmesdale grows ever sicker and more weak, while Roger Chillingworth grows more twisted and bitter, during all this Hester Prynne gains nearly the status of a saint. Even as they revile her for her sins, the people benefit from her skill with a needle, and her willingness to nurse any and all who suffer from ill health. She spends all of her time caring for others, either for the townspeople or for Pearl.

Finally it is revealed that the Reverend Dimmesdale is Pearls father. He has suffered through these years for his transgression, though silently. He and Hester meet in the forest and agree to take a ship across the ocean, to flee forever the shame of New England and start a new life together.

The following day, however, Hester discovers that Roger Chillingworth has secured passage on the same ship, and she knows then that he will never let them be happy. This is also the day that Reverend Dimmesdale is scheduled to give the Election Day sermon, which he does with unprecedented skill. At the end of his sermon, the Reverend seems to weaken substantially, and as he proceeds toward the scaffold of Hesters shame, he calls his lover and daughter to him. They climb the scaffold together, in the eyes of all the townspeople. Here the Reverend reveals to all his sin, and to match the scarlet letter on Hesters chest, he has carved one into his own flesh. Having finally confessed, he dies in Hesters arms.

What follows is all but inconsequential. Chillingworth is denied his revenge by the Reverends disclosure and death, and himself dies within the year. Pearl inherited all of his property, and became a rich young girl. She and Hester disappeared. Pearl is never again seen in New England, but many years later an old woman bearing a scarlet letter returned to the town, to resume her good works until the time of her death.

Hawthorne brings us this tale with many intents. He attempts to show us that we dont always see what we think we see. One who is held in high public regard may have the darkest secrets of all, and those held in contempt may have the hearts of saints. No man is fit to judge anothers heart, or to judge his sins. And above all, Hawthorne believes that it is best to bring your shame honestly into the open, to be seen and atoned for. Through seven years of silent suffering the Reverend Dimmesdale show us that no man can be judged as harshly as he judges himself.

My initial impression of the museum was that they should really invest in more elevators and stairways. There were so many people getting on and off the elevators and getting in each other's way that I thought I would not have enough time to see all the exhibits. But once on the tour, I was completely focused on the many different exhibits. The many artifacts from the holocaust were amazing. Complete Nazi war uniforms, and weapons, actual concentration camp bunk beds, and many personal effects belonging to victims and survivors. The exhibit that most impressed me was the replica of the entry gates to a concentration camp and the replica of a gas chamber. The exactness and detail was incredible. The two exhibits that made the biggest impression on me were the L.A. riot exhibit and the holocaust survivor guest speaker. The L.A. riot exhibit consisted of an interactive time line that portrays the series of event that led to the riots starting at the beating of Rodney King, to the acquittal of the police officers involved, to the riots and on to the aftermath. Each section has consists of video and text of the topic, the has a question and answer section where I was given the opportunity to voice my opinion, then the computer showed a graph showing the opinions of others. The other exhibit wasn't actually an exhibit, it was an actual holocaust survivor that told of her experiences before, during and after the holocaust. And at the end of the lecture, she held a question and answer session. Her name was Greta Goldberg, she was 18 years old at the time of her incarceration at the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp. Although she was unskilled, she worked as a nurse in the camp hospital. Fortunately, her cousin was a doctor and was able to pass her off as a nurse to the guards. Her stay in Auschwitz definitely wasn't a pleasant one, but it was better than most others. Mrs. Goldberg interacted with Josef Mengele almost on a daily basis as he came through the hospital to decide who lived and who died. She talked of how hard it was for her to live a somewhat decent life while her friends and family lived in squalor. Mrs. Goldberg and her cousin were the only members of her immediate family to survive the camp. She lost both parents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, a total of 5 relatives. At the end of her story she was asked if she still missed her parents. She replied with a poem. It said that during the whole experience, she was so sure that her family was alive because the guards told her so that she didn't mourn for them. When she was liberated after 8 months of incarceration she was sure that they would be waiting for her at home, so she still didn't mourn for them. And by the time she realized that they weren't coming home, she hadn't yet mourned for them, and so 55 years later she still mourns for them. I don't feel that I learned anything new as far as racism, injustice, or intolerance are concerned, I think that I have a clear understanding of the mechanics of these things. What I did learn from my visit to The Museum of Tolerance are the stories of individuals that were witness to the events that took place during the L.A. riots and the holocaust. The L.A. riot exhibit allowed me to see the many acts of courage and acts of injustice that I was previously unaware of. This exhibit affected me more than the holocaust survivor guest speaker because it was personal to me. My father is a Los Angeles police officer and was called into action at the onset of the riot. My mom and I didn't hear from him for almost 4 hours and didn't know what to think. We were more concerned with our own drama than the many other dramas portrayed on the news. But in seeing the riot exhibit, I was almost moved to tears by viewing the atrocities people were inflicting on other people and the heroic acts of kindness of other people. I knew about Reginald Denny and the people who lost their businesses, but there were many other stories that were just as bad and not publicized that I was unaware of. For example there was one man who was beaten unconscious, then had his genitals spray painted by his attackers and then there were the others who were pulled from their cars and beaten as equally bad as Reginald Denny, but weren't as publicized because the media didn't have as clear of a shot of the incidents. And in the midst of all these atrocities, I didn't realize that there were good Samaritans who risked their lives to help the people being victimized. There was the priest who stood by an unconscious man and defended him from hoodlums, passersby who picked up and drove people to safety and the many nearby residents who provided shelter for victims and potential victims. These people are truly heroes. I thought these were only isolated incidents, but as it turns out there were a lot of good people taking action.

Order your Appreciation for Life paper at affordable prices with Live Paper Help!We have all been taught throughout our lives by our parents to be careful around bears because of how dangerous they can be.However, being the teens we are, we usually just disregard what our parents say.One day, a couple of my friends and myself got a little careless and came across a bear can really be.We all remember that day as if it was yesterday. It was a hot, summer day and we decided to go for a hike on an older, not so used trail in an old park.Little did we know how scary that one day would be and just how much it would change our outlook on our lives.

We had been sitting in our campsite for three days and no one wanted to do anything because it was too hot.Just when we were all about to pack up and leave, one of the guys decided that we should go for a hike. Many of the girls protested loudly and said it would be a waste of time. However, there were a few of us that had really wanted to go hiking the whole time we had been there, but did not know of any hiking trails. The few of us that wanted to go hiking left the campsite in the early afternoon. It had to have been the hottest part of the day, but we went anyways.

We walked along the main road until we saw a sign that said Trapper Tims.

Thinking it would be cool to see an old trapping cabin we decided to hike that trail. We were all giggly and sweaty but we were having a good time.We came across a sign that said there was a problem bear in the area, but none of us thought anything of it.All of us started to joke about the people in camp missing the best hiking trip in the world and how the bear was really a problem.

We started to hike in a more dense area of the bush, and began to notice that more

of the vegetation was lying close to the ground. There was the odd pile of older bear feces, but nothing fresh so we disregarded any threat. We were all feeling the heat and numerous hills we had hiked, so we decided to sit down on an old, moldy log.A few times we could have swore we heard or saw something in the bush, but then we thought we were just trying to scare each other. Why we were so silly to ignore all the bear signs and put our lives at risk because of stupidity is beyond all our knowledge to this day.

There we were all sitting on this old, moldy log breathing heavily, when all of a sudden this big, cranky black bear walked out of the bush no more than ten yards from us.We all stopped talking at once and just stared in its direction. We could see the bear's eyes, every little hair on its body, and even its eyelashes when it blinked. The bear waddled around a bush and started to eat some short, green grass on the trail. All of us sitting on the log were terrified; we all swear to this day the log was shaking from fear that trembled from our bodies.

We looked at each other searching quietly for an answer as to how we were going to get out of this predicament alive.Just when we thought the bear was going to lie down and go to sleep, one of the girls on the log sneezed. The bear jerked its head around and stared at us sitting on the log, sweating and tired. The bear then charged at the log causing half of the people to jump up and run; the worst possible thing they could do.The rest of us just sat on the log terrified to move. The bear stood no more than five yards from the end of the log huffing and snapping his teeth together staring at us.It was so scary and intimidating. After what seemed like a million years but actually was only fifteen minutes, the bear slowly ate his way down the grassy trail putting much needed distance between us.

All of us took advantage of the distance between the bear and the log and ran out of the area; not the smartest this to do.When we reached the main road at the end of the trail we were all out of breath. We walked back to our campsite in silence and found the other half of the people that went hiking were sitting there drinking iced tea.We were furious, we could have died and they did not seem to care. There were a lot of heated arguments about what should have been done and what should not have been done.We decided we had enough of camping and hiking and packed up everything to go home.

While we were driving home it dawned on a bunch of us how close we were to death. That bear could have had us if it had wanted, and there would not have been anything we could have done.We all look back now and realize we may not be alive today if it was not for luck.We all learned a very valuable lesson that day, a lesson not to be soon forgotten. The lesson we learned was that our parents do not just harp on us to be annoying, but to protect us in the future. We also learned that bears may be nice and cuddly looking at a distance, but up close they are not.

In Hamlet there are buried many strong messages and suggestions. The reader of this play may look only at the surface of the words written, but would miss all the haunting messages of life and living without any faults. Throughout this play the ideas of guilt and vengeful thoughts pull at the words and actions of Hamlet and his uncle Claudius. These themes of the character's thoughts have an underlying message that Shakespeare hopes readers and listeners will pick up. Shakespeare repeats the theme in many of these character's lines to make his point to the audience. Shakespeare uses the words and thoughts of the two main characters to show that guilt and vengeful thoughts control people once they are allowed entrance to the human body and mind

Hamlet is the first poor soul who lets vengeful thoughts enter him. All to soon his father's ghost comes to warn him of his uncle's doings. Hamlet, before knowing the truth, begins his plot with a hurried promise that he, "with wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of love, may sweep to (his) revenge." The ghost leads him to the truth when it remembers, "sleeping in my orchard, a serpent stung me…" and goes on to tell him who the "serpent" was. The quick prince becomes fully aware of the vengeance he must seek. He begins to be possessed by the spirit's unrest at having been murdered. The spirit's warning has him speaking, "but wild and whirling words…" to Horatio and Marcellus. This happens so soon after talking to the spirit that it must be placed on the shoulders of hamlet's promise of revenge for the spirit. Shaken by the portent of his over hasty words Hamlet becomes so confused it is easy for the idea of taking revenge for his father's death to become imbedded in his mind as the best star to guide him. The question of vengeance against the King is brought up numerous times, forcing many speeches from our "prophetic soul" as he stumbles within his thoughts and actions to take the revenge the ghost has so long waited for. Revenge is the one idea leading to his rash action towards Polonius and smart remarks against both the King and Queen. Alas, it also leads to his untimely demise.

As the play proceeds Claudius begins to feel the audacity of what he has done to his brother. He begins to feel the guilt rise towards his skin wanting to break out onto the world. He begins to be afraid. His words and actions slowly tell his decline into a deep pit of guilt. This guilt is what makes him afraid. He is afraid of what he has done and what the consequences from his nephew may be if he ever finds out. Claudius knows that his "offense is rank, it smells to heaven; it hath the primal eldest curse upon't, a brother's murder." He realizes in his act three soliloquy that he is, "still possessed of those effects for which (he) did the murder," and will never be able to repent enough to save his "limed soul." A hint of the King's guilt is shown only to the other characters the one time that he realizes someone else knows his secret. This one time is at the play. The guilt takes over his actions in his command to send Hamlet to England, to his death. This feeling again comes to control him as Hamlet slips from England's strangling grasp back into Denmark to exact his final revenge. While the King plots with Laertes guilt obliges him with the wicked idea of trying to get rid of Hamlet once again. The poison sword is backed up with poison wine so as to finish the job fully. The fear of his guilt builds in the King to the point where he is willing to try anything to get rid of the one person who could spoil every one of his plans. Guilt controls his decisions in life, making him live in fear of what Hamlet and God may do to him.

The feeling of guilt and vengeful thoughts are what quickened the death of the two main characters in this play. After seeing this, one must ask what did Shakespeare want to convey with this message? What did this playwright want to show the audience that was so important? In the real world, Shakespeare said that we are still players on the stage in a melodrama called life. He wrote his plays for the world in hopes that if one only listened, then one would hear rustling messages in the leaves of his verses. This message in Hamlet about guilt and revenge must make us believe not in our own selfish feelings, but in the revealing of these feelings to friends and family. This revelation put into the play Hamlet would make a much different ending maybe even a happier one. Do we in this much-changed age want to live our own small tragedies or would we like the happier ending? This must be asked if only to spark the warm fire near which we all could sit someday and smile together to know we've beat guilt and revenge.

America had been an agricultural society from the colonial days. Increasingly, industrialization in the North changed the focus in the Northern society. Northern states sought growth, change, the interchange of products, ideas, even peoples, all things abhorrent to the static, structured south. Indeed, in time, the South concluded that the national legislature merely reflected the moneyed interests of the North. Secession under these conditions seemed just.

The North, unlike the South had many advantages previous to the Civil War. The North had an expansive population, railroads, and a sense of the more modern world. On the other hand, the South had about one-third the North's population and not even a quarter of the new industries and more modern way of living.

The years leading up to the Civil War were not easy, yet they were a time of growth for the United States. In 1800, only eight million people lived in America. By 1860, the population was almost 4 times the size at an increasing thirty-one million people. The country had also added new territories to its borders, miles of railroad track, and leaders in foreign countries were beginning to pay close attention to this successful new country.(Davis, pg 86)

"Although growth brought the United States wealth and glory, it also created conflicts throughout the nation. As the country changed, two very different ways of life developed within its borders-one in the North and the other in the South. The more America prospered the more divided these two sections became." (Delia Ray pg.17) William Howard Russell, a British newspaper reporter, traveled from England to America in 1861 to write about the changes in America. He went first to New York City and he automatically noticed the massive amounts of activity along the shores. He noticed the many ferryboats and freighters working busily in the bay. Russell could see the thick blackened smoke over the many factories where railroad parts and other pieces of machinery were made. As Russell got off the steamship, he heard the voices of the many different accents, some German, some Irish. Most of the people on the dock were newcomers to the United States(Hoeman, para. 1-14). In fact, during this time, millions of men and women from foreign countries poured into America in search of jobs in the mills and factories.Write your Civil War research paper

All across the North, cities followed the footsteps of New York. This period of America's growth was known as the Industrial Age. Inventors developed new machines that made new products at speeds never imagined possible. With the rapid immigration, quiet towns seemed to become noisy in a matter of months.(Urwin, pg. 5)

William Russell then traveled to the southern states. On his journey he discovered quite a different scene. From his train window, he could see miles of farmland and rode for long stretches before he came to a city setting. Compared to the North, the South was quiet with almost no immigrants and little manufacturing. Life in the South was mainly concerned with huge estates, fields of cotton, and tobacco. During his journey through the United States, Russell learned that the two sections were as different as their cities and towns within months.

One of the most important ties with the North and the South was the trade. The South depended on the North to transport its goods to other countries such as England and also make trades of their own with the North. The people in the South watched the North grow more and more and they become jealous, but more fearful of the power the northerners had. Southerners feared that the North would take over and begin to pass laws that would hurt their state's economies. John C. Calhoun, a southern senator who became vice president, was one of the first leaders in the country to try and make a helpful move on this situation. Calhoun spent most of the summer of 188 devising a plan on a way to alleviate this fear. This was a bad move because it startled the North and angered President Andrew Jackson. It was because of the expression of the southerners fear for their estates that this all began.

There are many different views and opinions of the true cause of the Civil War. Many can be supported by evidence and facts and many can be proven true; yet, the effects of the economical society on the United States show much effect on the separation between the North and the South. The disunity of the sections brought much disunity to the states and much disruption to America itself.

The Civil War was a drama of history, it was a story filled with bloodshed, pain, and glory. The idea of brother against brother was one of amazement and yet it seemed quite out of the ordinary. To some it was a war that made them proud and others were ashamed to admit the disunity of their nation; yet, it was fought with courage and braveness until the end.

Diversity

What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Diversity, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Diversity paper at affordable prices with Live Paper Help! Some of the typical reasons diversity training does not work well in organizations are outlined below. If your organizations initiative did not do as well as you expected, assess whether your training was affected by any of the following

Poor Timing. The training may have come at a time when employees were preoccupied with more urgent priorities. Stress, because of downsizing and the accompanying fear of job loss, increased workload, or a specific conflict or negotiation with a union might have been much more critical. During such periods, staff is usually functioning at the survival level on Maslows hierarchy and diversity may not even be a blip on their radar screen, hence their irritation that time and resources are taken up with training.

Outside Intervention. If employees perceive that external forces such as a court order or a politicians decree have prompted the training, they are apt to resist. They generally resent the ensuing training that they view as payment for others sins and see it as an instrument of their torture. They sometimes feel they are being sacrificed to meet objectives they do not necessarily agree with while their own needs continue to be ignored.

Training Approach. Some of the backlash may be due to the training approach itself. If the initiative poses some as perpetrators and others as victims, there is apt to be defensiveness among those who feel blamed. All white males, for example, are not at the top of corporations. Many, working on shop floors and in offices across the country, feel just as misused and blocked by their organizations as do women and people of color. Many will react with defensiveness if they feel unjustly accused in a confrontational, youre the enemy approach.

Affirmative Action Paradigm or a Narrow Definition of Diversity. If diversity is seen as the domain of a few groups, people of color and women, for example, everyone else may feel left out and view the initiative as being for others, not them. A broader definition that includes individual aspects such as educational level and parental status as well as organizational dimensions such as management status or division/department creates an umbrella that is big enough to cover everyone. In this framework, everyones issues would have a valued place. For example, both a white male hourly employees view that his input is not valued, and an immigrants perception that her accent has blocked her promotion, would be included among the issues to be addressed.

Once the reasons behind the backlash have been determined, you will be in a better position to move ahead. The following are strategies you might consider to rebuild credibility and generate support

Work on systems obstacles first. Address some of the organizational barriers that you have discovered in your needs analysis. Creating a more flexible benefit or leave package, or changing the dress code, can be ways to acknowledge the different needs and preferences of staff. Opening the promotional pathway through job postings or mentoring for those who desire upward mobility are other examples of systems changes. Responding to staffs real concerns before asking them to change through training can show real organizational commitment.

Get input from backlashers. Hold a focus group to listen to the views and issues of those who found fault with the training or who reject diversity. Find out their concerns and needs. See if there are any ways the organization can respond to their issues or deal with their frustrations. Once they feel their own concerns have been addressed, they might open up to other diversity issues.

Get broader support. Create a diversity council that is representative of a diagonal cross section of employees to get a range of views and attitudes. Include staff who represent the resistors, those who are skeptical of anything called diversity. They can become the most powerful allies if they have buy-in. As informal opinion leaders, when they see diversity in a new light, they can influence others who have been resistant. They can also give critical input in planning future diversity interventions.

Explore offering just in time training and provide it in other formats. If additional knowledge and skills are needed, find ways to deliver it that do not rely on traditional training in a group setting. Perhaps one-on-one coaching to help managers deal with diversity challenges or interventions at a team meeting to help work groups overcome obstacles to effectiveness can be more relevant and specific ways to train with staff. This focuses and customizes training in an immediately applicable way.

You can turn backlash into a benefit when you use it as an opportunity for learning and then take what has been gained to create new credibility and commitment for your diversity intervention.

How the Americans Understand the Equality of the Sexes.”

The American democracy holds its strength in having separate branches in the government. As it began to survive soon after its creation, Alexis de Tocqueville traveled from France to the new states and viewed the social differences between them and Europe. In 185, Tocqueville published thoughts in Democracy in America. In it he compares and contrasts the men and women of Europe and the States. In his passage â€How the Americans Understand the Equality of the Sexes,” he clearly states that man and woman to be completely different things, each with their own â€lines of action.”(408) His written passage describes men and women on different paths, but having both the attributes of strength and intelligence, shown greater respect, and have a greater respect for their duties than Europeans.

In the early eighteen hundreds European women displayed themselves as helpless individuals needing men to be their brains and their brawn. Tocqueville writes; â€They are entitled to show themselves futile, feeble, and timid” (40). The European women of his era were not intellectually educated, but educated on being frivolous and silly so to as attract a husband. To the writer’s delight, American women are, in his view, both intellectually and morally superior to their European counterpart. He also writes that women of America also show a great deal of understanding and energy and sometimes â€show that they have the hearts and minds of men” while carrying on a delicate appearance (408). He goes on to say that men never doubt the courage of women though it is not in the same direction as that of a man. Tocqueville esteems these women in knowing that they have the capacity to discover their truths and is confident of that fact.

The men of the democratic country show a lot respect and trust in the understanding of the female mind and of her respective world. Tocqueville is uplifted by the respect that men give to women in reverence of their duties. He points out that both sexes have respect for the others office and that â€they consider them both beings of equal value”. The respect is reflected in the fact that women are never made to go beyond domestic employments, no matter how poor is not made to perform rough labor in the fields. Women’s virtue is also respected in that the crime of taking it from a woman not merely a fault but a capitol offence in the States. The honor of a woman is much less embraced in French culture. In America rape is a capitol offence, Tocqueville states â€In France, where the same offence is visited with far milder penalties, it is frequently difficult to get a verdict from the jury against the prisoner” (40). Both men and women show regard equally for the others duties and honor, though they are not the same.

Do my essay on how the Americans understnd th equality of the sexes CHEAP !

The women of America are hard working and respect their duties as a both a wife and a daughter. Tocqueville holds that women do not deny men their right to direct his family as â€the natural head of the conjugal association of man”. Much like the president at the head of the democracy, a man rules in the head, though the woman’s duties are no less important. Women of the states, in conflict with Europeans, take pride in the surrender of power and usurp their rights willingly. Women take this â€yoke” as a duty and boast of it. â€Such at least, is the feeling expressed by the most virtuous of women” (408). Thus American women never deprive society by acting like â€seductive but imperfect beings” and take on their domestic responsibilities as an intrinsic part of society. He writes that women’s virtue in strength of duty is by performing her own duties to the best of her ability (407).

Much like in the American government, the greater work of society may be carried on by carefully dividing the duties between the relevant groups. Thus while social inferiority exists this society has done much to raise the intellect to the perspective level of man. â€His partner [women] ought not to always exercise their intellect and understanding in the same manner, they at least believe the understanding of one to be as sound as that of the other” (410). Women of the States know their place and like it. They do not act feeble. They are strong, intelligent women subservient only to men, and never neglecting their duties.

Macbeth Lady Macbeths Character

Lady Macbeth is a controversial figure. She is seen by some as a woman of strong will who is ambitious for herself and who is astute enough to recognise her husbands strenghts and weaknesses, and ruthless enough to exploit them. They see her in her commitment to evil and in her realisation that the acquisition of the Crown has not brought her the hapipiness she had expected, and finally, as one who breaks down nuder the strain. Others see her as a woman ambitious for her husband whom she loves. She recognises the essential good in him, and feels that, without her, he will never win the Crown. She allies herself with the powers of darkness for his sake, but here inherent(congenital) femininity beraks down under the strain of the unnatural murder of Duncan and the alienation of her husband. She is seen as simple and realistic where Macbeth is complicated and imaginative. She can see what must be done; he visualises the consequence.

There is a vast difference between Macduffs O gentle Lady Tis not for you to hear what I can speak The repetition in a womans ear Would murder as it fell. ACT II, Sc.ii and Malcolms assessment of her as a fiend-like queen (Act IV, Sc.vii). So we must examine the text. To Macbeth, in his letter to her, she is his dearest partner of greatness, an indication of love and trust. We see her as she analyses his virtues and weaknesses and decides to overcome his scruples, hie thee hither That I may pour my spirits at thine ear Is there any evidence here as to why she wishes him to be king?

Overcome By Ambition - When she calls on the powers of evil to unsex her and make her cruel, does this imply that she fears her own womanliness and realises the unnaturalness of the murder of Duncan? Is she, like Macbeth just an ordinary human being overcome with ambition? Does she really lose her womanliness? Do the words(Act I, Sc. ii) Had he not resembled My father as he slept, I had donet imply that she is still a woman with a womans tendernesss? Does she show herself strong willed and more determined than Macbeth, Act I, Sc.vii, as she argues and demands his agreement to the murder? Is she alloy by exploiting his love for her when she makes his consent to murder a test of his love? Is she being cynical when she inverts logic and reality in asking him if he is afraid to be what he wants to be and in suggesting that to be a true man he must take what he wants? Must she take some of Macbeths guilt here? In the murder scene (ActII, Sc.ii) she resorts to wine to give her courage. Does this also show that she has not been filled from top to toe with direst cruelty? She is aware, too, that dwelling on the moral aspect of the murder will make us mad.

The Better Criminal? - She seems to be the better criminal; she remembers the details that Macbeth has overlooked, Why did you bring these daggers from the place? and shows her as she brings the daggers back. Does she really despise Macbeth when she argues him of wearing a heart so white? Or is she afraidfor him that he may betray himself? In Act II, Sc.ii, when she calls for help does she do so because of her feminie weakness, or is she afraid that Macduff may question Macbeth further as to his killing of the chamberlains? If the latter, does it again illustrate her quick thinking?

Unhappiness - In Act III, Sc.ii, Lady Macbeth is coming to realise that the Crown has not brought happiness, Noughts had, alls spent, Where our desire is got without content. Is she suffering from remorse here, or does she think that the murder of Duncan has alienated Macbeth from her? How now, my Lord! Why do you keep alone? Is she worried that he is unhappy? She tries to console him, whats done is done. and to rally his spirits. She again shows her presence of mind in the Ghost scene when he becomes unmanned, but then, she does not see the Ghost. She uses the old stragedy of appealing to his manliness, but without success. When the guests have departed she does not upbraid Macbeth, but makes excuses for him that he lacks the season of all natures, sleep. Does this show her gentleness and compassion towards him? Or does she feel that further argument would be useless?

The Sleep-Walking Scene - We do not meet her again until this scene. She has now been reduced to a poor, mad creature, broken by events. Our last view of her is her delusion of nearness to Macbeth. Is there a stress on her sense of guilt, her despair and, perhaps still, her determination? Macbeths few words about her (Act V,Sc.v) may be uttered in an indifferent tone, or even with a sense of something already lost. In the end, perhaps, we feel guilty for her, but we may still remember what appeared to be hardness and cruelty.

In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Jim and Huck use and believe in many superstitions. There are many examples from the book that show this in the characters. Most of the superstitions are very ridiculous, but some actually make a little sense. In the first example, Huck seen a spider was crawling on his shoulder and he flipped it off and it landed in a lit candle. It shriveled up and died. Huck said it would fetch him some awful bad luck. He got up and turned around three times and crossed his breast every time. Then he tied up a little lock of his hair with a thread to keep witches away. He says that the ritual he did was for losing a found horseshoe and did not know if it would work. These superstitions and remedies seem pretty far-fetched and it is hard to say where they originated, but I would have to say they originated down South. I think it originated down south because I am from up North and I have never heard any one speak of those superstitions. Huck believes in these probably because he grew up with them and they were always taught to him and he is so ignorant he does not know better. One morning Huck turned over the saltcellar at breakfast. He went to throw the salt- cellar over his left shoulder to cancel the bad luck, but Miss Watson stopped him. All day he wondered when something would fall on him and what it would be. This all implies that Huck thinks something is going to fall on him, because of his accident. I have heard about bad luck from spilling salt so I think this Superstition started in the North or maybe it was just popular and spread quickly. I do not believe there is hardly any fact at all to this. Huck believes in this probably because of the way he grew up. Jim said when young chickens flew a yard or two at a time and lighting it was a sign that it was going to rain. He thought if birds did it, it would be the same. Also Jim said if you caught one of them you would die. He thought this because his dad caught one and got sick and his grandmother said he was going to die. His father did die. These superstitions do have a little credibility. I think they originated because some birds do fly in patterns when it is going to rain or storm. The part about his father dying might have a little credibility, but it is kind of stretching it. Maybe his dad caught the bird and ate it without cooking it all the way, or maybe the bird was infected and killed Jims dad. Jim probably believed in the bird story about his dads death because he experienced it first hand. Jim also said you should not count the things you are going to cook for dinner, because that would bring bad luck. The same if you shook the table the table-cloth after sundown. He said if a man who owned a beehive died, the bees must be told before sun-up of the next morning or the bees will die. These superstitions are all nonsense and having nothing to do with anything. I think Jim believes this because he does not know any better. He experienced some Superstitions first hand and that is probably why he believes in them. The previous superstitions probably originated out of stories told wrong, exaggerated, or people kept jazzing up stories to make them interesting, until they turned into nothing, but nonsense. Jim says if you have hairy arms and a hairy chest then you are going to be rich. This originated probably from a few rich men who were hairy. They probably told people they were rich because of their hair and since they had the money to endorse their ideas people believed them. Money can buy many things, it can also make normal people understand and believe things they usually would not of. Jim probably believed this because maybe his former master or masters were rich and were hairy. He was also hairy and had money at one time. At the end of the book he became free and Tom gave him $40, which supported Jims theory. Huck grabbed a rattlesnake skin, which was the worst luck Jim and Huck ever encountered. This superstition has good size of fact to it to. It probably originated because people like Huck picked up their skins and kept them in their bags or played tricks on the friends, like Jim. The mates probably came and defended their mate, by attacking the victim who had the rattle-sake skin. The superstition probably got stretched a little out of proportion, but I think a good deal of it is real. Huck and Jim probably believe in the bad luck caused from touching the snakes skin because they experienced it too. When Huck played that trick on Jim, I am sure Huck became a believer of the bad luck. Jim also said he would rather look at a new moon over his left shoulder a thousand times instead of touching a snake skin again. This superstition might have originated from people looking over their shoulder and then they probably stumbled and fell or ran into something. Huck and Jim probably believe in this because it makes a good deal of sense to.

X-Engineering sounds like something out of an Extreme Sports magazine or television show.In a way, it is.X-Engineering is a competitive new way to run organizations to compete in today's economy.Author James Campy shared his ideas on how to reengineer a corporation using X-Engineering in his recent book "X-Engineering the CorporationReinventing Your Business in the Digital Age".

Champy states that it is imperative for an organization to have a brilliant idea and share their ideas amongst their peers."Billions of dollars could be saved if companies shared processes with customers and suppliers that are now essentially redundant. The future belongs to companies that recognize the primacy of relationships in the networked marketplace(Lynn). He also states that if your company creates the idea better than anyone else, it really will not matter if your competitors know what you are doing.

Champy also spoke about the importance of the use of global resources and the Internet, both of which are critical to make boundary-crossing connections.Another important factor is making sure that the organization is 100% onboard before attempting X-Engineering.Internal processes must be prepared for this change as well.

Relation of Article To Readings

Different types of managers can use X-Engineering in different ways with in their organization. The theories behind X-Engineering are simple.Reduce internal costs, eliminate redundant processes, focus on customers needs (both present and future).Depending on the manager and the level at which they work, different things can be done to put this process to work.

Top-level managers are most likely those who will need to bring the X-Engineering to light with in the organization. This is not something that can be brought about by lower level employees. These managers can commit to changes that are required for X-Engineering the organization, plan how the process will work with in the organization, and set the plan in motion with lower level management.

The lower level management will put the plan into action. They will openly look for ways to cut costs, eliminating redundant processes with in the organization, and looking for lower cost out sourcing of some processes.

The first level managers will work with the customers. They will find out the current and future needs of the customers. These needs will help determine the way that the organization reinvents itself.

All parts of management will in some way affect the way that the organization is reinvented. With out the cooperation of all parts of the organization, and 100% backing by the top level, X-Engineering will not work.

X-Engineering At Work At Iowa State Bank

I think that in this new economy, many organizations are in some way reinventing them selves, using X-Engineering or other methods.I believe that X-Engineering is something that is taking place with in the company that I work for.Whether they know it or not, many of the pieces of X-Engineering have already been implemented or are currently in the works.

Redundant processes have been cut at Iowa State Bank.In the past there have been multiple answers to the same questions, depending on how one would go about asking.Sometimes a client would apply for an account or loan at one location and be denied, while at another location the application would be approved.Much depended on the relationship between the client and the banker. If the banker knew the client from an outside organization, the chances of that person receiving a loan where much higher than that of a new client that is completely unknown by the banker.

Today, lending and account opening decisions are made primarily based on an outside company's report about the client.Experia provides a fast, convenient decision-making process that helps the bank be consistent and fair.Experia also helps Iowa State Bank to cut costs and losses.Decisions from Experia are based on credit history, OFAC status, and other important credit related information. All of the factors taken into consideration help the bank know if the client in front of them will be a risk.

The Bank has many different other procedures that have been outsourced at a lower cost. All of these things help to make the Bank more profitable.

Recommendations For Iowa State Bank

I would recommend that Iowa State Bank continuously look towards the future in the way that we use outsourced processes and procedures.I believe that there are more options that could be explored in order to save money, time and eventually make this bank the envy of all of the "small banks" in central Iowa.

"The False Friends" by Dorathy Parker

Dorothy Parker wrote "The False Friends" in 16.This poem is split into four different stanzas with four lines each.It is written with alternating 8 syllable and 6 syllable lines. This poem is about friends that aren't really your friends and the rhyme scheme of the poem is abab, cdcd, efef, ghgh.

The theme of this poem is a friend that you think is your friend, but in reality, this friend isn't always there for you when you need someone. Then the speaker uses irony to present her own cynical nature.Friendship is something that we all need because it keeps us from feeling lonely. The poem is written from the author's point of view and she must have felt betrayed when she wrote the poem. The use of the first person enables the author to express her feelings directly from the poem. The first two stanzas of the poem show the narrator believing that her friends would always be there for her.The line "And time could heal a hurt, they said" shows the speaker believing her friends could hearl her wounds."And time could dim a vow," shows how her friends promised her that everything would be fine and she believed them. This can be interpreted as the speaker looking for support because something bad had happened in her life. These two stanzas build up the suspense while the last two stanzas answer it.The speaker discovers that her friends had lied to her, but she also realizes that she doesn't really need them.Although it took her an extra month, she still felt better, without her friends' support. This shows the narrator's cynical nature as she says in these lines "For June was nearly spent away before my heart was whole," that she felt better without her friends.

This poem presents a somber mood throughout because of the sadness in the speaker's life, but then this mood turns to one of irony and sarcasm as the speaker makes jokes about her friends.A main subject of the poem is time and how many believe that time can heal all wounds.Personification is used with time because time is an intangible object and it can't literally "hear a hurt" or "dim a vow."The speaker of the poem hopes that "time" will be able to heal her wounds like her friends said and it did, but the irony of this is that she didn't need her friends to feel better. The last two stanzas of the poem are where the speaker tells that she is able to heal her wounds without her friends. Her friends weren't there for her when she needed them, so she decides to be alone and this is just fine for her.The line "to come to me with lies" is where the speaker expresses her anger at her "false friends."The most powerful words in this poem are "time" and "lies."We usually don't associate our good friends with "lies," but the speaker feels that her friends lied to her and is angry. Her cynical attitude shows itself as she jokes around about "friendship" and that she is much better than her friends because she can help herself. The change in the mood happens in between the second and third stanzas when the speaker changes from a person that has a lot of confidence in her friends to a person that is angry with them and feels confident without them.It is as if she loses her hope right there and the poem changes from a friendly and somber voice to an angry one.Friendship is an element that everyone needs and the speaker of this poem tells of this importance through a bad experience with some of her own.

Dorothy Parker - The False Friends

They laid their hands upon my head,They stroked my cheek and brow; And time could heal a hurt, they said,And time could dim a vow.And they were pitiful and mildWho whispered to me then,The heart that breaks in April, child,Will mend in May again.Oh, many a mended heart they knew.So old they were, and wise. And little did they have to doTo come to me with lies!Who flings me silly talk of MayShall meet a bitter soul; For June was nearly spent awayBefore my heart was whole.

There are many mornings when I wake up early and watch some TV, in fact I watch TV a lot. What I can not stand are those hideous commercials that devalue the elderly, and make them look slow and weak. These commercials make me, as the person watching, feel sorry for them. It makes me dread becoming old, because I do not want to be as helpless and devalued as they appear on the TV.

My body shakes as I watch that elderly woman fall down in her living room. She reaches her head up and screams those famous words that most people joke about "Help, I have fallen and can not get up." This shows that all old people fall a lot and they are completely helpless. The commercial could have shown a middle age person falling. Just because a person is elderly, does not mean that he/she are always falling and screaming for help.

Sealy Prostropedic has a commercial that advertises their new bed. This new bed goes up and down with the click of a button that is conveniently located at the side of the bed. This bed is good for people who have trouble sleeping, or those who have bad back problems. In the commercial, the Sealy corporation has an elderly couple laying in a regular bed, complaining and whining that it is uncomfortable. Then in the next scene, the same old couple is lying in the Sealy bed, and they are all of a sudden magically cured, lying comfortably. This commercial shows a common stereotype, that old people are commonly bed ridden, with bad health problems. It also shows that old people are bitter, lying in bed complaining until they get what they want. I know that my dad, who is a middle aged man, always has back problems, and is always complaining that his back hurts. The Sealy Company might be able to make some more money, if they advertise to a wider range of audience. A middle aged person might feel old and bad about themselves if they have to buy a bed that old people stereotypically use.

People die everyday, old people, teenagers, kids, adults. However, the Garden Life Insurance commercials, there is always an old woman crying about how she can not afford the funeral costs of her husband, who dies suddenly. This insurance covers the family after someone dies. This commercial devalues the elderly by telling them that they will be dying soon. Once again, a middle aged mother or father could die, and he/she need life insurance as well to make sure that everything is taken care of.Custom Essays on Argumentative...Seniors are discriminated in the media

The Alka Seltzer commercials show an old man who has heartburn. In fact, all of the heartburn medicine commercials predominately show an old man who is in massive pain which is due to their heartburn. Many people from the ages of 18 on get heartburn. We all eat something wrong sometimes, but the commercial sells to the older generation, because they tend to be seen as sick and weak.

Another frightening commercial that devalues the elderly is Depends underwear. Depends is a brand of diaper or pad for the elderly that have accidents. The commercial shows old people who need to wear diapers. This is a very embarrassing thing for an elderly person to admit they have to do. This commercial is very rude and immature to show on TV. This is also an example of why some people are scared to become old, because of this sort of helplessness.

These commercials strike a nerve inside of me. I think of my poor grandfather who lives all the way in Washington state. He does not have a wife, or any of his family nearby. It is him by himself in a nursing home. When I see these commercials, I picture my grandfather screaming in pain because of his heartburn. I can also picture him attached to a posturepedic bed, because his back hurts too bad to sleep in a regular bed. It makes me sad and angry. The insurance commercials show an old person all alone in the world. These commercials, although effective to the general audience, show a weak side in the elderly. Most elderly people are not even in that bad a condition and they do not need to be treated negatively.

Elderly people have played a big part in our world. Without them, we would not even be here today. Some of these people have fought for our country, taught us lessons, gave us jobs, entertained us, built our homes, and protected us when we were young. These people should be respected and honored because they are probably wiser than we will ever be. The elderly have seen the world through some of the toughest times, times that we will never be able to compare. The elderly do not need to be shown as weak, sick, and crabby. They are people too, and deserve to have positive commercials targeted to them. The elderly are stronger than we will ever know, and for that, they deserve the utmost of respect.
