We had been sitting in our campsite for three days and no one wanted to do anything because it was too hot.Just when we were all about to pack up and leave, one of the guys decided that we should go for a hike.Many of the girls protested loudly and said it would be a waste of time.However, there were a few of us that had really wanted to go hiking the whole time we had been there, but did not know of any hiking trails.The few of us that wanted to go hiking left the campsite in the early afternoon.It had to have been the hottest part of the day, but we went anyways.
We walked along the main road until we saw a sign that said Trapper Tims.
Thinking it would be cool to see an old trapping cabin we decided to hike that trail.We were all giggly and sweaty but we were having a good time.We came across a sign that said there was a problem bear in the area, but none of us thought anything of it.All of us started to joke about the people in camp missing the best hiking trip in the world and how the bear was really a problem.
We started to hike in a more dense area of the bush, and began to notice that more
of the vegetation was lying close to the ground.There was the odd pile of older bear feces, but nothing fresh so we disregarded any threat.We were all feeling the heat and numerous hills we had hiked, so we decided to sit down on an old, moldy log.A few times we could have swore we heard or saw something in the bush, but then we thought we were just trying to scare each other.Why we were so silly to ignore all the bear signs and put our lives at risk because of stupidity is beyond all our knowledge to this day.
There we were all sitting on this old, moldy log breathing heavily, when all of a sudden this big, cranky black bear walked out of the bush no more than ten yards from us.We all stopped talking at once and just stared in its direction.We could see the bear's eyes, every little hair on its body, and even its eyelashes when it blinked.The bear waddled around a bush and started to eat some short, green grass on the trail.All of us sitting on the log were terrified; we all swear to this day the log was shaking from fear that trembled from our bodies.
We looked at each other searching quietly for an answer as to how we were going to get out of this predicament alive.Just when we thought the bear was going to lie down and go to sleep, one of the girls on the log sneezed.The bear jerked its head around and stared at us sitting on the log, sweating and tired.The bear then charged at the log causing half of the people to jump up and run; the worst possible thing they could do.The rest of us just sat on the log terrified to move.The bear stood no more than five yards from the end of the log huffing and snapping his teeth together staring at us.It was so scary and intimidating.After what seemed like a million years but actually was only fifteen minutes, the bear slowly ate his way down the grassy trail putting much needed distance between us.
All of us took advantage of the distance between the bear and the log and ran out of the area; not the smartest this to do.When we reached the main road at the end of the trail we were all out of breath.We walked back to our campsite in silence and found the other half of the people that went hiking were sitting there drinking iced tea.We were furious, we could have died and they did not seem to care.There were a lot of heated arguments about what should have been done and what should not have been done.We decided we had enough of camping and hiking and packed up everything to go home.
While we were driving home it dawned on a bunch of us how close we were to death.That bear could have had us if it had wanted, and there would not have been anything we could have done.We all look back now and realize we may not be alive today if it was not for luck.We all learned a very valuable lesson that day, a lesson not to be soon forgotten.The lesson we learned was that our parents do not just harp on us to be annoying, but to protect us in the future.We also learned that bears may be nice and cuddly looking at a distance, but up close they are not.
