I can almost remember it as if it were yesterday that I was twelve years old and at the Virginia State Fair.It was a comfortable and clear evening, and yet it felt as if my family and I had been plucked from reality and placed on a movie soundstage. The sweet smell of cotton candy, stale popcorn, and the distinct stench of animal feces wafted through the air.The pathways bustled with people scurrying from one attraction to another.

We spent the most of the evening gallivanting around the midway experiencing all the complimentary rides that we could indulge our senses in. While my sisters and I soaked up every bit of our childhood pleasures that we could while whizzing, twirling, spinning, and whirling, my parents stood off to the side and cherished this moment for they knew that it wouldn't last forever.

The night was almost picture perfect until we arrived at the Caterpillar Kiddy Coaster. It was the tiniest coaster I had ever seen, with it's little flower lanterns and bright color scheme.I can remember waiting in line thinking that this was going to be the high point of my evening, but little did I know what was to ensue. As we reached the gate to bored the bizarre looking caterpillar the gentleman loading the children asked my mother if she cared to hitch a ride in the insect's head. She declined at first but then she had a sudden change of heart. This was not a smart move on her part and if Regis Philbin was there he would have told her to go with her first answer as her final answer. What you must understand is that my mother at this point in her life weighed almost a whopping three hundred pounds.I must say that overweight women and kiddy coastersdo not mix as she soon would find out.

Waddling over to the car my mother squeezed herself into the head of this little caterpillar. After a brief moment to ensure all passengers were secure in their seats the ride operator dispatched the train and off we went. With clack after clack of the chain we rose to a breathless five feet above the ground.Once to the top we were released and gravity dictated the journey. Up, down, and around the coaster bounded jarring us while filling out heads with fear, anxiety, and joy. The little caterpillar circled the track three times before coming to rest back in the station. As all the other children disembarked from the train so did my sisters and I only to find ourselves alone at the exit gate.Buy Hungry Little Caterpillar term paper

Our mother was still sitting in the caterpillar looking very embarrassed and a bit scared. The operator also noticed this and approached her.He said in his southern accent, "Mama, do you need some help getting out of that there seat?"Of course my mother answered, "Yes, I believe I do, I think that I may be stuck."Everyone started looking to see what the holdup was and of course it was mom.My mother was so embarrassed that she started to blush.

From out of nowhere two big burly men came to the rescue. With a man on either side of her the two men tried to pry her massive body from the car.Every time that they would try to hoist her she would grunt and cry out, "Ouch, it hurts, it hurts!"Meanwhile my sisters bawled and cried out "Mommy! Mommy! Are you ok? Are you ok?"After a few tries the operator said to her, "Mama, I think we might need to take part of the car apart to get you outa there."My mom would not stand for this, it would cost her too much embracement to go through this whole ordeal. So they all decided to try once more. With a swift tug and a few more grunts and whimpers, she was free.Everyone waiting in the queue cheered and applauded to see that she had made it out and that the caterpillar had not been decapitated. You might ask where my father was during this entire occurrence.Well if you must know he was looking at the NASCAR booth that was less than one hundred feet away.

Now that we have all aged a little more we can look back and laugh at the situation.Mom has gone on to have a lifesaving procedure to correct her weight problem and has become literally half the women she once was.I guess it just goes to show what an experience like this can do.

More than 1 in 6 South Africans are HIV positive and this is a conservative estimate, also more than 1800 new people are infectedevery day, this number may rise to 0% of the general population by the year 005.

Such figure delineate a big risk for the nation wide population, create an enormous impact on the heath of the workforce and also the future of business, trade and commerce in South Africa. Because the people that are dying now specially the youth generation is the one who suppose to recreate the country in same intend.

The people that are infected with AIDS in South Africa is the poor with particular retaliation, with the high unemployment in township communities to secure a work is real difficult and in another hand there is a lot of discrimination among those there are HIV positive status, and for those lucky enough to have a job, it is prove that their income supportothers in the family. Also there is a big issue in the families those that tend to be open and talk about the situation, they are separate from the communities, make the life of the people more and more difficult, that why same time the silence in the way to keep they position in the family save.

In South of Africa here women don't have almost voice to articulate their needs or claim the services on which their survival depends and this take or make their situation more complicate, because is part of Africa history that women have to stay under man control and most of the male, and disempower and marginalised the women, we can say that is the main cause for HIV spread more fast because of different partners.

It seems to be taken for granted that South Africa cannot afford to provide the drugs from the "first World" as treatment for those living with HIV/AIDS, denying the best available treatment for those who need in the most " those who live in poverty and are most vulnerable to infectious this disease" is INDEFENSIBLE. In another hand make question if they're truly care for the long-term human security and global stability?

Here are same important points that we have to always remember

1. IN South Africa, 1 in every 5 adults is estimated to have HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

. In South Africa has 4,7 million people who've been infected by HIV /AIDS, more than any other country in the world, 1800 people become infected everyday

. When someone test positive for the virus, he or she is HIV+, does mean having AIDS. AIDS is a syndrome that happens after many years of being HIV+, when the body's natural defence system breaks down and can't fight the infections. People do not die from AIDS, but the infections that their bodies cannot fight, and people can live many years in good health with HIV.

4. HIV enters the body through the sharing of body fluids like semen, vaginal fluid and blood, the best thing that we can do to preventing to became infected is to practice safer sex or have sex with only one partner in case of casual sex always use condom. HIV is spread from one person to another by; unsafe sex (without using a latex condom) from mother to child (during the childbirth feeding)

5. You cannot get HIV through "casual contact" like kissing, hugging, sharing cups, plates and utensils, toilet seats, swimming pools, tears or saliva.

6. HIV does not discriminate; it does not care about race, gender, sexual preference or age. It not deftly a gay, white or black disease, people of all races and creeds can became HIV+. If you know someone with HIV treat them with love and respect that you always have, fear, ignorance and prejudice not only but create the stigma of HIV, but helps spread of the virus by creating a wall of silence and denial about AIDS.

7.There is no cure for AIDS, but we be careful and play safe, because by end it's our body, and our life it's worth to keep that way.

As we can see the most important task now is to prevent the further spread of the virus and care for those who are infected with HIV. No one is to blame for the appearance of HIV, but now that we know it is there, we must not be accused of failing to create the kind of responsible and caring society that will make it possible to prevent AIDS.

A man once loved basketball but his legs were paralyzed in a auto accident and he couldn't play.In the eyes of defeat he surpassed that and went into the wheelchair league for basketball. These characteristics can also be shown in John Steinbeck's book of Of Mice and Men.The characters George Milton, Lennie Small, and Candy all show that they could be considered gallant in the eyes of defeat.

George is gallant in the way of being self sacrificing because he gives up being able to pursue his dream in order to look after his friend. They were by a river on their way to their new job and George becomes mad at Lennie. He burst out with "God almighty if I was alone I could live so easy. I could get a job'n work, no trouble at all."George is defeated in the sense that hes being held back by Lennie, he gives up his dreams which he is capable of perusing to look after Lennie's well being .But George overcomes it by sticking through it and spends basically his whole life being a babysitter and taking the risk of getting in a lot of trouble because of Lennie's childish behaviors. After Lennie just killed Curley's wife and is on the run, George gets to him first and talks to him.He takes a gunand shoots Lennie in the back of the head, killing him.It was hard for George to do but he had to do it because he was either going to get tortured by Curley, or put in a jail where he wouldn't be happy at all. It was a gallant act for George because this was a person which he cared about and was given a responsibility by Lennie's aunt to look after him when she died. He stares fear in the eyes and does what has to get done, being very gallant.

III.Also, Lennie Small was gallant in the sense of being positive and spirited in the presence of his mentally challenged state. For example, toward the end of the book, the boys are having a horseshoe game and Lennie is left in the barn.Curley's wife comes in and wants to talk to Lennie and tries to flirt with him.Lennie doesn't want anything to do with her and only cares about tending rabbits. He is very happy about the rabbits and living a happy life.He doesn't use his disadvantage as an excuse to be happy and live his life.He overcomes that and pursues a happy life as any other person would. Also, Slim, Curley, and Carlson came from outside where They were arguing back and forth and Carlson insulted Curley.Lennie was smiling thinking about his future land. But Curley thought he was laughing at him and then they began to fight.Curley was beating on Lennie. Then all of a sudden "Lennie reached for Curley's fist. The next minute Curley was flopping like a fish on a line, and his closed fist was lost in Lennie's big hand."Lennie overcame his natural fright brought along by his disability and defended himself like any other person. It took a lot of courage for him to do this but he was Brave enough.

Finally, Candy was gallant because of his bravery in the eyes of his shortcomings. The guy was lonely on a ranch with no friends except his dog.Carlson and the others on the ranch were thinking about killing the dog because it stunk and took up space. Carlson picked up his luger and went outside and killed the dog with the gun.The dog was all Candy had and was taken away by Carlson . Even though this hurt old Candy agreed to the killing of his old dog. He was brave enough to do the right thing because the dog was described that is was in major pain and it was its time to go.Also later in the novel, Crooks discourages Lennie and Candy from their dream of land with George. They are going back and forth about this topic.Crooks asks them if they really think they can do it.Then suddenly Candy says, " Yougod damn right we gonna do it. George says we are.We got the money right now."Very angrily he blurted that out.Even though is very old and hurt, he looks death in the eyes and no matter what, still wants to pursue his dream since he was young.

Eisenhower

Under Eisenhower, the Civil Rights movement began its motions, seemingly from a void nothingness, as the south still had a stranglehold on the general society and was enforcing its racially motivated hatred's.

Around this time, a great movement was also starting up - The NAACP, however Eisenhower did not play a role.

One ofEisenhowers greatest moves in the Racial debate was to nominate Earl Warren as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who would be the principle party in the decision to outlaw segregation in schools (154).Order custom research paper on Stuff I like To do on Sundays

Because of this move, the first black students where allowed to attend a normally segregated High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. This was indeed a great and inspirational step in the plight for civil rights.

The backlash was fierce, so Eisenhower had to send in a thousand men from the airborne divisions to keep the peace.

In 156, Eisenhower, won a landslide victory, however, the southern states, from which he came, did not support him, attempting to place the democrat Adlai Stevenson in power, as they felt that he was more sympatheticto their cause - racial segregation. This, was his last term. So as a whole, Eisenhower cannot really be seen as the "father" of destroying racial segregation and bringing in black civil rights, however, it should be known that it was from his original decisions that latter presidents could, and would, strike on this issue.

Kennedy

Under Kennedy that major push for rights of Black Americans was undoubtedly brought to the fore. It can be clearly seen that without the help of robert Kennedy, as JFK's Attorney General, there would not of been as much backing from the oval office on this issue. However, JFK, started to take a great interest in the topic, and this is why he is seen as one of the greatest advocates of this cause.

Under JFK as presidency, Martin Luther King began to put forward his then radical views of non violent protest, and he rose as not only his communities spiritual and activist leader, but that of the nations moral leader.

During this Period the Rosa Park case became known, so to did the bus Boycotts. The silent and peaceful sit-ins became a prominent part of many corner stores and eateries, and the Black plight was now onto the world scene.

It can be said that JFK not only supported these movements, but acted as part of it, and it is because of his leadership that progress was made. Before he was tragically shot he was constructing a civil rights bill, which surely would have ended the world of segregation known to all America. Luckily, there was another President to be handed the torch

Johnson

Johnson carried on JFKs work, which in reality made him a major player in the civil rights movements of especially the 60's.

Under his guidance, two major pieces of civil rights legislation where passed.

These included the Civil Rights Act of 164 , which outlawed discrimination in public accommodations, and the Voting Rights Act of 165, which provided for federal enforcement of voter registration and outlawed literacy tests. King did not give Johnson overwhelming credit for the legislation, stating that these resolutions were written in the streets by demonstrators. However it is evident that without Johnson these would not of eventuated.

because of these legislations and his support and initiative in Kennedys ideas and affairs, Johnson has become a major supporter and player in the civil rights movement, however, as things go, he has never really received the credit he deserved. This may be attributed to the tensions between himself and Martin Luther king over the vietnam war.

Conclusion

Although Kennedy is often perceived as theonly president to have been involved in civil rights Johnson, and Eisenhower also played a very important role.

These three Presidents, in their own right, have assisted in the civil rights movement, some more than other, yet, without the support of these three men, and their cabinet ect, the black civil rights movement would not of received the publicity and the political backing it needed to finally succeed.

Effect of heat treatment on Germination of

Acacia longifolia and Dillwynia floribunda

G.Clark

University of Wollongong

Cheap College Papers on Heat treament on seeds

Abstract

Thegermination of two types of seeds Acacia longifolia and Dillwynia foribunda were studied after exposure to heat treatment. This was done by exposure to boiling water. Response to treatment was evaluated by final percentage of germination of each species after a time period.

There was a significant difference in response between the two species to the heat treatment.Acacia longifolia had higher germination percentage in the unheated group then in the group exposed to boiling water. While germination percentage in Dillwynia foribundawas much grater in the heated group, with very few seeds germinating in the unheated group.

Introduction

Bushfires are a regular part of many of Australia's ecosystems. Bushfires can be a major disturbing force, causing adult plant damage and possible death. Were adult plants are capable of resprouting after a fire no seedling re-generation may be need to maintain a population. However there may be some adult plant mortality during normal fire, or very high mortality, if intensity or frequency of fires increase . Therefore successful germination of seedlings will be needed to replace an adult population. ( Auld, T. D. and O'Connell 11)

The central hypothesis of the experiment was that Seeds from Acacia longifola and Dillwynia foribunda require a high temperature to the outer shell of the seed to break its dormancy and instigate the germination process in the two types of seeds. The null hypothesis was that no heat was required to instigate the germination of the two types of seeds.

These hypothesis were based on both seeds having a thick hard protective coating which leaves the seeds dormant to a force is attacked on them. This paper presents evidence that heat treatment to Dillwynia foribunda helps to increase germination, While in Acacia longifola there was no evidence that heat treatment helps increase germination.

Materials and Methods

Two species of seeds were studied, Acacia longifola and Dillwynia foribunda of which samples of each type of seeds were supplied.

The experiment was set up so that 10 seeds of each species with it's elaiosomes removed were placed in unheated water, then 10 of each species with elaiosomes removed were added to boiling water. This was repeated across five different groups along the beach.

The independent variable in this experiment is temperature, while the dependent variable is the seeds, the standardized treatment is the type of seed.

Experimental Treatments

The experimental treatment used in this experimentwas boiling water, the seeds were placed in the water just taken of the boil and then placed in the water for 0 minutes. The same volume of water were used for each group of seeds 00ml in group 5 this may have varied significantly over the five different groups.

The control treatment used in this experiment was unheated water, two groups of seeds were placed in water a room temperature and left for 0 minutes.

After 0 minutes the seeds were removed and placed in pitree dishes. They were then left for two weeks, there was no observation of the seeds during these two weeks.

Results

Table one lists the results that were gathered from the bench. There was a great deal of variation between groups, this has been attributed two error in experimental method and change in experimental conditions such as water temperature and time that the seeds were allowed to stay in the water as well as the natural variation within the species. 15 out of 50 Acacia seeds in the control treatment germinated with only 1 in 50 seeds germinating in the treated (heated) .of 50 Dillwynia germinated in control treatment while 7 in 50 germinated in the treated group. Germination percentage can be seen in fig. 1. The t-test for Acacia longifolai was .1 showing that there is a significant difference between the treated and untreated groups, shows that the likely hood of the means being the same is almost impossible. The t-test for Dillwynai florbunda was 1. also proving the likely hood of the two groups having the same mean as almost being impossible.

This family unit presents a different perspective of family life in America often times due to the causes of teenage unplanned pregnancies, economics, violence, divorce and even death. Single-parent households make up a good portion of the working poor, often relying on local and state run agencies to make ends meet. The emotional support needed by this group can and is obtained by their extended families and kinship groups. In defense of this group, it would be inaccurate to place all single-parent households as being destitute or deprived, nor would it be accurate to say thatextended familiesare well off because they all put their finances together.

The main scene is the glen in Inverness-shire (Scotland), where the house of granny and the holidayhouse of the Frasers stands. There is also a town where they do the shopping. The title has two explainations.

The first is the the history of Granny's Grandmother, Margaret Ross, she lived during the "Clearance" in 1854, when her sister was murdered. After that she married a man called James. I think that the writer made a link, between that Margaret and James and Maggie and James Fraser now. And between the murdered sister and the burned house. Which is the second explaination, the burning of the house of Maggie's Granny, Margaret. Her house and history are whole cleared then.

Romeo and Juliet

For generations, Shakespeare has been regarded as a great High Culture representer and he¡¯s plays are the best ever written. ¡°Romeo and Juliet¡±, a tragic romantic story about two star-cross lover is one of Shakespeare¡¯s best work. Now four centuries later, Baz Luhrmann¡¯s film of ¡°Romeo and Juliet¡± once again stirs up the deep, inner most feelings of humanity and shoots high up into the glory of modern films.

Both texts are popular for their own reasons. The original play of Shakespeare features the story through word imageries. However, it¡¯s lack of sound and visual images free our imaginations and allow us to picture all the scenes widely. By closely looking at the language techniques, we can study the style of the language used and gain a better understanding of Shakespeare, Elizabethan¡¯s time and of cause, the play¡°Romeo and Juliet¡±.

In the famous Capulet Party Scene when the two lovers first met, love began between them two. They had to learn to love their enemy.¡°O dear account! My life is my foe¡¯s debt¡±, said Romeo. Juliet on the other hand was also greatly disappointed ¡° my only love sprung from my only hate¡that I must love a loathed enemy.¡± The ideas of love and hate are so close to each other but yet they repel. Throughout the whole play, the notion of love and hate intercepts each other. This new shaped idea is valued in Elizabethan age and it continued as an exotic idea even now. This is one of the main reasons why the play is still so popular. Its values attract the audience and grab their attention. The play also follows a typical fairy tale narrative with the princess (Juliet), the knight (Romeo), the villain (Tybalt), the magic helper (Friar Laurance) to go on a mission, that is, to find true love. The settings and the plot of the story fit well with the narrative that this reflected value also keeps the audience entertaining. Other themes of the play such as obedience and destiny also occur in society nowadays. The mystery of fate remains unsolved. Write your Romeo and Juliet research paper

In Baz Luhrmann¡¯s film ¡°Romeo and Juliet¡±, he transforms the play into a modern film. By using advanced film techniques, he successfully introduced a classic text into part of our popular culture.

The setting of this film is still at Verona, now a modern metropolis found everywhere in our society. Two waring households, the Capulets and the Montagues torn the city apart with their violence. Their hate and fury towards eachothers were presented to us in the garage scene in the beginning. The two families were both presented in their own style and clothing, this instantly separated them. The Montague boys were dressed in Hawaiian shirts and had blondish light hair. On the other hand, the Capulet boys were sullen and dark in cowboy heels and western clothing. The fight soon broke out between them and we see powerful fire rising and hovering over the whole city. Throughout the film, the fire element presented the two families¡¯ anger and rage. On the other hand, both Romeo and Juliet are kept in peace and are protected by the element of water. This is shown in the first scene of Juliet washing her hair in the water and Romeo washing his face after the affect of drug. The balcony scene is also transformed into the pool scene where the water surrounded them and maintained peacefulness.

The characters in the film are more distorted and corrupted. They are more emotional and engaged in the story. For example, the character Mercutio is a rebellious dangerous person hanging on the edge. He is a drug taker, sexually confused and talks about love and lust. He presented many people in the society reflecting many negativity and confusion. One other modern aspect is religion. In modern days, we use religions as a fashion and commercial trend. They become meaningless and rather like a decoration. Throughout the film, we also see many religious signs and symbols that they lose their true meanings. Music and sounds also play a big role in the success of this film.

The musics played in the film range from classic text to modern pop, by doing this, Baz Lurhmann linked the two periods of time closely together.

Overall, we can see that both texts are extremely successful and will always maintain their popularity in the future.

Eman the tragic hero

Hanging from a tree limb in the first rays of the sun, Eman's body sways to and fro, carrying with his soul the sins of the village. Eman had all the traits of a tragic hero, including his own tragic flaw. It wasn't that Eman had excessive pride, or that he was greedy, it was that Eman did not know enough, and was too kind. He did not know the responsibilities that came with being the Carrier for a village, as it varied from the village where he was raised. This lack of knowledge and his kindness to the young Ifada, caused Eman to hang.

There are several traits to a tragic hero, one being that the "hero" accepts his fate by free choice. When Oroge and Jaguna come to take Ifada as the carrier, Eman notices he is obviously not willing, and the carriers from his village have all been the strongest and most willing candidates. Eman believes that the rituals will not work, if in fact the carrier is not strong and willing. He says to Jaguna, when they try to take Ifada " A village which cannot produce its own carrier contains no men." (Soyinka 180). So Eman takes Ifada's place as the carrier, in a roundabout way sealing his own fate.

In the Strong Breed the consequences that Eman suffers for being the carrier exceeds his flaw of being only a stranger to Sumna's village. A stranger must be taken to be the carrier for the village, and Eman is a perfect candidate. The play ends with the audience feeling that Eman was wrongfully hung, and it is this injustice that makes him a tragic hero. Had Eman been a native to the village, or had he simply let Ifada taken the burden of being the carrier, Eman would have survived. But this was not in his personality. He could not let an innocent retarded boy be taken for what seemed to him something that only the crème de la crème would do. Custom Essays on Eman the tragic hero

Another Trait of a tragic hero is that, as time passes, he/she gains a sort of understanding of what is to become of them, or what is really going to happen before they meet their end. At first, Eman thought he was simply taking over a task that an innocent retarded child could not perform. He did not know that the carrier bore the sins of the village to death, and if he had, maybe his mindset would have been different. But all the same, Eman removed the task from Ifadas shoulders and took on the tremendous responsibility. But after the confrontation with Oroge and Jaguna, and after Eman escapes, he slowly realizes that he is in over his head, and that all is not as it seems to him. And at the end, when he is captured, and when he is hung, he fully understands the fate that he brought upon himself.

When Eman is dead, the audience is emotionally saddened but realizes it could have been the young Ifada, and thought emotionally drained, is exultant in that Ifada was saved by Eman's sacrifice. This small purgation lets the audience feel as if Eman's sacrifice was for a good cause, and he did not just die to carry the sins of the village. However, the play retains a somber mood, and fairly shocking ending, with the main character hanging from a tree at midnight.

Fate plays an important role to Eman, and him being the carrier. He was raised for 1 years to be a carrier in his own village, and when his tutor threatens his "girl" Omae, he strikes him and runs away. His stalwart honor is shown as a young boy, how he would not let a woman be mistreated by an abusive old man. It seems like fate that he should defend the helpless Ifada when he is in need. Eman's father was a carrier, though in a different village, it still is as if Eman is walking down the same path his father had when he was a carrier, and when he takes the responsibility he is doing just as his father had. It was his destiny, his fate, to become the carrier.

Eman was by all means a tragic hero, and his kindness and honor lead him to his untimely death at the hands of the village. Had he not been such strong willed man, it would have been Ifada hanging from that tree. However, it didn't seem that Eman had accepted his fate by running away, and this goes against his personality. It shows that maybe Eman thought that it was one thing to think himself capable of such sacrifice and another to actually carry through with it. But, he was the chosen one, the carrier, and he died to cleanse the village of its sins.

Order your Detriot Lions And Physics paper at affordable prices !What's wrong with the Detroit Lions?

It is obvious to me that the laws of physics can be applied to the game of football. However, The Detroit Lions may be unaware of this fact. With there current 0-1 record they are on a losing streak that could be placed in the record books. No team has ever lost every single football of their whole season. What an embarrassing way to be placed in the record books. Maybe if they looked at some of the laws of physics they could win a game.

The passing game for the lions is one area that can be examined. Quarterback Charlie Batch has one of the lowest ratings in the league. He completes a little under 60% of his passes. His average passing yardage is approximately ten yards. Using the knowledge of physics to examine the projectile motion we can help Charlie complete more passes.

Let's look at what we know

1. Charlie is aboutmeters tall.

. His average pass is ten yards or meters.

. He's throwing with parabolic trajectory.

4. We will use the equations

The velocity in the horizontal direction (Vx)= The initial velocity (Vi) cos (the angle)

The velocity in the vertical direction (Vy)= The initial velocity (Vi) sin (the angle)

The distance in the horizontal direction (x)= The velocity in the horizontal direction (Vx) multiplied by The time (t).

The gravity is always equal to -.8m/s squared.

From the equations we can say that the initial velocity could be Charlie's problem. Say Charlie always passes with an angle of 0 degrees so that it isn't easy for the other team to intercept the pass. This kind of pass would usually takesseconds to get the receiver. This means that Charlie's average pass ofmeters needs and initial velocity of 11m/s to get to the receiver. If any of these things don't work out, or say, Charlie changes his passing angle, the pass will probably be incomplete.

Kicking the football can also be an aspect of the game that could improve for the lions. Two weeks ago, Jason Hanson missedfield goals. Kicking field goals can be examined from a physics perspective. The football will follow the same parabolic trajectory as passing.

Using the Same Equations we can determine the initial velocity needed to make his averagemeter kick. He usually kicks with an average 40 degree angle. Also it takesseconds for the kick to go threw the uprights. This kick will need a 11.5 m/s initial velocity in order to go threw. Not to mention, the kick also has to be straight as an arrow. For all the things that have to go right, maybe field goals should be worth more than justpoints.

Collisions happen all the time in the game of football. Whoever "wins" the collision, or keeps going forward, depends on who has more momentum. Momentum could be the difference between running the right threw the opposing defender, or having the defender hit you back and down to the ground. They are one of the most exciting parts of football.

You momentum (p) is equal to your mass (m) multiplied by your velocity (v). So, the question is; Would you rather have a fat guy who's really slow, a medium weight guy who's has a medium speed, or a light weight super fast guy? Fact is that it wouldn't really matter. They would all have about the same momentum because all the multiplication of big and small numbers would equal out.

The running back of the Detroit Lions weighs about 170 kg and is traveling atm/s. How fast does the huge 50 Newton defensive player have to be traveling?

P of Detroit running back = 170 kg m/s = 510 kgm/s

P of defensive has to equal 510 kgm/s

510 kgm/s = 50 kgX m/s

510 kgm/s / 50 kg = aboutm/s

So, you see that no matter how different the size, to objects can always have the same momentum. It is always possible for a little running back to have enough momentum to break the tackle of the big, strong linebacker.

The Lions are in big trouble if they can't get it together soon. The season is coming close to an end and they are still win-less. If they could only realize how many aspects of the game that could be understood with the knowledge of physics. Perhaps the coachshould be studying a physics books, instead of the video tapes of the last game. Using projectile motion and momentum could lead to the first Detroit Lion win in 1 games. They should take a small portion of the money that they make an invest in a physics course or two!!!

My Favorite Meal

I have a lot of good memories of my senior prom. The Hiltons California

Ballroom, the dancing, and socializing with friends were some of the memories.

Cheap Custom Essays on Favorite meal

But most of all, the food was the best memory of all.The food served at

Castlemont Highs senior prom was colorful and delicious. One could not help

but to see, smell, and eventually consume the food. The meal consisted of hors

doeurves; the main course, beverages, and dessert. All of these delicacies

combined made the prom a satisfying experience.

I remember vividly the set of hors doeurves. The hors doeurves were

arranged in a big heart to set the mood of mystery and romance. The bright

crimson bell pepper stood mighty in the face of its relative, the humble, dull,

green pepper. The darkened pieces of beef had visible hints of all purpose

seasoning and slivers of onions. The dull pink jumbo shrimp looked like

crescent moons, outrageously swollen, and just about ready to bust out of their

transparent, segmented shells.

The smell of hors doeurves served to whet the appetite of all in

attendance. The hickory smell of beef stood out to draw everyone near. The

shrimp had a salty smell with a hint of ocean water. The bell peppers, both

green and red, had a tart smell, compared to their fleshy counterparts. My

taste buds watered, but nothing could compare to the next course I was about to

see.

After devouring the hors doeurves, the main course was set before us.

The arrangements of Chinese styled meats, rice, and vegetables were scrumptious.

The roasted chicken with its dry skin was covered by an orange sauce with green

onions glued to the surface of the sauce. The rice, darkened to the color of

light brown, housed the pieces of yellow and white scrambled egg, the cubed

pieces of salted, cured ham, and shreds of imitation shrimp meat. The stir

fried vegetables were made up of carrots, long two inch green string beans, and

the head and partial stems of broccoli. The shreds of carrot were intermingled

between the broccoli and the string beans.

Not only did the main course look good, it tasted excellent. The

roasted orange glazed chicken was sweet and spicy, spicy enough so that with

every few bites I had to sip some cold water. The fried rice reeked ofsalty

ham, and freshly scrambled egg.The rice also had the scent of soy sauce, which

was used to darken the rice. The carrots dominated the scent ofthe stir fry

vegetables. The faint, bitter smell of broccoli came in second, while the

buttered string beans hadlittle scent at all. However, after staying in the

vicinity, you knew the string beans were present.

A meal just wouldnt be complete without an assortment of beverages.

The beverages complemented the main course.Variety was not a problem. One

could have their choice of presweetened Kool Aid, or a natural Smoothie. The

Kool Aids black/red color gave me a hint of what flavor it was black cherry.

The Smoothie was a progeny of oranges and white sweet cream. The combination of

these two gave the Smoothie a creamy look, with white foam bobbing on the top.

Smelling the drinks gave me a calming effect. For instance, the

Smoothies tart orange smell and the Kool Aids smooth black cherry smell served

to calm my taste buds from the workout that they had just received.

In time, dessert was the only frontier left to explore. There were

three selections to choose from - strawberry cheesecake, apple pie, and

chocolate fudge brownies. The cool strawberry cheesecake had fresh bright red

strawberries laying on top of the off- white, solid cream cheese bottom. The

steaming hot apple pie was fresh out of the oven with its golden brown crust and

golden colored apples encasedin a checkerboard crusty top.Lastly, the fudge

brownies were dark brown with pieces of walnuts poking out of the brownies as if

sunken ships were trying to get out a sea of mud.

The smell of the dessert climaxed the food experience. The cheesecake

smelled like a ripe strawberry patch with a light hint of cream cheese. The

apple pie smelled like apples steamed and then suffocated in a room of crust.

And lastly, the brownie had the sweet smell of semi- sweet chocolate morsels and

baked walnuts.

Yes, there were many memories of the prom. But the excellent food that

was served proved to be the best memory for me; a memory so strong that I will

remember it for years to come.

Fear

Fear. The dictionary defines fear as a feeling of alarm of disquiet caused by the expectation of danger, pain, disaster, or the like; terror; dread; apprehension. But do you think that the feeling of fear can be defined? Think about it, when watching a scary movie, one may feel scared of uncomfortable, but fear? No, fear is a feeling one gets when a gun is pointed at their head or before going into an intense surgery. Here, I have three examples of fear through literature, art and music.

In Edgar Allen Poe's, "The Fall of the House of Usher", fear is one motif followed throughout the whole story.Fear is greatly showed in this story even before the reader is captured in the words. One passage on the fourth line shows this, "I know not how it was--but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded on my spirit.I say insufferable; for the feeling was unrelieved by any half-pleasurable, because poetic, sentiment, with which the mind usually receives even the sternest naturalimages of the desolate or terrible."This passage presents a feeling of fear in the reader that increases throughout the whole story, not just when it gets "scary".One critic from the Washington Post writes, "Edgar Allen Poe's, "The Fall of the House of Usher", revolves around this realm of fear, and reveals the importance of facing and overcoming our fears."Another critic, Dawn Priegel, says, "Because of Roderick's fear, however, he is restrained from leaving and does not make the attempt to defeat this enduring power that holds him captive."These critics prove that fear is the most powerful motif all the way through the story.Order custom research paper on Fear

Salvador Dali shows a motif of fear in his painting, "Visage of War".In fact, this painting was directly related to Edgar Allen Poe's, "The Fall of the House of Usher" on the web site www.poedecoder.com/essays/fissure/ .The images on this painting show pure fear.Dali created this effect by using dull, dark, gloomy colors and little texture and movement. One critic of Dali, Roy Lichenstein, wrote, "Dali has reached a point of repitition so that his later works were merely imitations of his earlier works."In this painting the look on the imagesfaces is of pure fear.Inside of each eye socket, and his mouth there is the same face, and in their eyes and mouths there is the face again, and so on and so on.

The musical piece I chose to represent fear is "Pictures of You", by The Cure. Here are the lyrics

Ive been looking so long at these pictures of

you that I almost believe that theyre real Ive

been living so long with my pictures of you that

I almost believe that the pictures are all I can

feel

Remembering you standing quiet in the rain as

I ran to your heart to be near and we kissed as

the sky fell in holding you close how I always

held close in your fear remembering you

running soft through the night you were bigger

and brighter and whiter than snow and

screamed at the make-believe screamed at the

sky and you finally found all your courage to

let it all go

Remembering you fallen into my arms crying

for the death of you heart you were stone

white so delicate so lost in the cold you were

always so lost in the dark remembering you

How you used to be slow drowned you were

angels so much more than everything oh hold

for the last time then slip away quietly open

my eyes but I never see anything

If only Id thought of the right words I could

have held onto your heart if only Id thought of

the right words I wouldnt be breaking apart all

my pictures of you

Looking so long at these pictures of you but I

never hold onto your heart looking so long for

the words to be true but always just breaking

apart my pictures of you

There was nothing in the world that I ever

wanted more than to feel you deep in my heart

There was nothing in the world that I ever

wanted more than to never feel the breaking

apart all my pictures of you

This song is aboutthe fear of losing a loved one.One critic from "Rolling Stone" magazine says, "The fear of loving one or losing a loved oneis the scariest fear of all." This song shows that fear is not only being afraid of something but also of someone.

Fear.Fear is not something to be defined. It should be discussed, or analyzed, but to say that fear is a feeling of danger or pain is too broad. Also fear can be one being afraid of something concrete, like in "The Fall of the House of Usher", or one being afraid of something abstract, like love, shown in "Pictures of You".

The Scarlet Letter is a novel that deals with the theme of sin. Throughout history, people have committed all types of sins, and whether they are major or minor, people have been punished. However, the severity of a punishment is very difficult to agree on. Some people feel that sinners should be deeply punished no matter how little the wrongdoing was. Others feel that a persons punishment should be based upon the severity of their crime. However, what many people overlook is the fact that in time, we all have committed sins.

In The Scarlet Letter, the idea of sin and punishment is the main theme of the novel and how Hester Prynne, the main character, has been punished for her sin of adultery. As Nathaniel Hawthorne states in this novel, In the view of Infinite Purity, we are sinners all alike. This statement puts a big question mark on the true lives of the Puritans. If we all have once committed a moral wrongdoing, why is this young woman so harshly punished for her sin?

Hester Prynne was a young woman living in a Puritan community in the New World. Her husband, Roger Chillingworth was said to be lost at sea, and Hester assumed his death. Upon this basis, young Hester committed a crime of adultery with her fellow Minister Arthur Dimmesdale. The result of this extra marital affair was the birth of young Pearl, an elf-like child. When the townspeople become aware of what Hester has done, they forced her to wear an ultimate sign of punishment, the scarlet letter. This letter A for adultery had to be worn on Hesters bosom at all times.

When one analyzes the punishment inflicted upon her, it may seem harsh and cruel, especially for a Puritan society. It seems that Hawthorne agrees with this as well. Throughout the novel, it seems apparent that Hawthorne feels that the punishment Hester received was harsh and self-degrading. When one commits a sin, they should understand their mistake, receive their blame, and receive a slap on the wrist. However, the punishment Hester received was far worse emotionally. Wearing the letter made Hester the talk-about of the town. When she walked through the marketplace, she received scornful looks, as if society was rejecting her for her wrongdoing. Hester was now living on the outskirts of town, isolated from neighbors and trying to communicate with her daughter Pearl. After many years of being swept out of society, Hester realized that her punishment was far worse than she deserved.Write your scarlet letter research paper

Many times throughout the novel, Hawthorne sympathizes with Hester because of the emotional problems she encounters. Hawthorne sees her as the victim and blames it on her youth. She was forced to marry Roger Chillingworth at a young age, although she clearly had no feelings for him. Secondly, Hesters crime was one out of passion, not malice. It is clear throughout the novel that she has strong feelings for Dimmesdale and they outweigh her respect for the Puritans code of law. Although Hawthorne does not condone adultery, he often feels that Hesters sin is somewhat out of necessity. She has nobody in her life. Her husband is lost at sea and she lives with alone.

Dimmesdale was the first man Hester really loved, and he feels that because of these circumstances, her punishment far outweighed her crime. Throughout the novel, it is very clear that Hester does not abide by most Puritan traditions and she clearly is not very orthodox. However, at times in the novel, it seems that she has overcome her guilt and her love for Pearl is unmatched, yet the scarlet letter always reminds her of her adulterous sin.

A human is very fragile and many things can hurt or upset them. As Hawthorne expresses, it is clear to Puritans that they have little or no sympathy for unruly persons. Hawthorne feels that once she has over come her guilt and has accepted her punishment, then Hester should be able to start over from scratch and unload this heavy burden from her back. However, that doesnt happen. This sin remains with Hester for seven years until her death, and the Puritan community never seems to forgive her for her sins.

It is very clear that in this novel, Hawthorne is attempting to express his feelings on Puritan life and their rigid beliefs towards transgressors. However, people should be able to leave the past behind them and start over, yet that never seems to happen, and Hester is forced to drag this guilt around with her, until her last breath of air.

Order your the fags of usa paper at affordable prices with Live Paper Help! The war between Athens and the Athenian empire versus Sparta, Thebes, Corinth, and other members of the Peloponnesian Confederacy 41 - 404 B.C.E. Large scale campaigns and heavy fighting took place from Sicily to the coast of Asia Minor and from the Hellespont and Thrace to Rhodes. It was the first war in history to be recorded by an eyewitness historian of the highest caliber. It has come down through history as the archetypal war between a commercial democracy and an agricultural aristocracy and a war between a maritime superpower and a continental military machine. Thycidides history is itself a classic, which for generations was considered a foundation of a proper education.

The war began on 4 April 41 B.C. with a Theban attempt to surprise Plataea, Athens ally and outpost on the northern base of Cithaeron. It ended on 5 April 404 B.C., when Athens capitulated.

The cities of the Boetian Confederacy under Theban leadership were Spartas allies from the first. Syracuse and other Sicilian cities gave active help in the last part of the war. Argos, her hand tied by a treaty with Sparta, remained neutral during the first ten years, but as a democracy, was benevolently inclined towards Athens. Persia at first held aloof, waiting for an opportunity to regain her dominion over the Greek cities of the Asiatic seaboard, which Athens had liberated, but finally provided the crucial financial and logistic support required by Sparta to conduct a maritime offensive. Athens, was unpopular with many members of her own empire, but held most under control by her maritime supremacy. The war may be divided into three major periods or five phases

The Archidamian war phase 1 41-47; phase46-41

The Sicilian war 41-41

The Ionian or Decelean War phase 1 41-404; phase407-404

Causes

The underlying cause of the war was Spartas fear of the growth of the power of Athens. This is Thucydides own final judgment. The whole history of the rise and power of Athens in the 50 years preceding justifies this view, though the immediate occasion of the war concerned Corinth, Spartas chief naval ally. Since the peace of 445 B.C. Pericles had consolidated Athenian resources, made Athens navy incomparable, concluded in 4 B.C. a defensive alliance with the strong naval power Corcyra (Corinths most bitter enemy), and renewed alliances with Rhegium and Leontini in the west. The very food supply of the Peloponnese from Sicily was endangered. In the Aegean Athens could always enforce a monopoly of seaborne trade. To this extent the Peloponnesian War was a trade war and on this ground chiefly Corinth appealed to Sparta to take up arms. The appeal was backed by Megara, nearly ruined by Pericles economic boycott, and by Aegina a reluctant member of the Athenian Empire.

But if Sparta had not also been eager for war then peace would have lasted. Sparta was waiting an opportunity that came when Athens was temporarily embarrassed by the revolt of her subject-ally Potidaea in Chalcidice in the spring of 4 B.C. The rebel city held out until the winter of 40 B.C. and its blockade meant a constant drain upon Athenian military, and naval resources. Sparta seized the opportunity. Confident of speedy victory she refused an offer of arbitration made by Pericles. Instead, Sparta sent an ultimatum that would have practically destroyed Athenian power. Pericles urged the people to refuse and Sparta declared war.

Peloponnesian War Phase 1 (41-47)

In a war between the main military and main naval powers in Greece a decisive result was unlikely to occur quickly. Sparta relied on the traditional strategy of Greek warfare. She hoped that by invading Attica and destroying the crops she would force Athens either to sue for peace or come out to fight the standard set piece battle in which typical Greek wars were decided. In numbers as well as discipline and combat effectiveness of troops Athens was decidedly inferior

to the Spartan-Theban forces. The defect in this strategy was that Athens unlike other Greek cities could not be starved into surrender, nor be made to fight a pitched battle by occasional occupation of its individual citizens farm lands. Her food supply came principally from Egypt and Crimea. The the old king of Sparta, Archidamus, knew this and warned his people about it. But the Spartans were still confident in a quick victory in pursuing their strategy of annihilation.

The stories, Miss Brill and The Tale Tell Heart are different and similar in many ways. Both short stories contain very graphic descriptions of their stories and in both cases they left a lot up to the imagination. The actors are very different from each other; one is a man that turns crazy, and the other a woman who perceives herself as being in a play and as an actress.

The conflict in the stories could be both similar and different. In Miss Brill, this short story is narrated in the third person from the point of view of the limited omniscient narrator who primarily acts as the voice of the story's protagonist, Miss Brill. By telling the story through the eyes of the protagonist, Mansfield is able to convey to the reader the protagonist's loneliness and the lack of self-awareness. She offers no explanation as to the Miss Brill's past, leaving it to the readers to draw their own conclusions. The protagonist in Tell-Tale Heart doesnt have a name but he is a man. He is a paranoid man who a one-eyed man was always looking at. The tension built up in him until he felt he couldnt take it anymore. The types of conflict can be similar and different in both stories. For example, they both have conflict with reality.

The central theme of "Miss Brill" is the pain of loneliness, and inadvertent attempts to experience life through the experiences of total strangers. From the beginning of the narrative it becomes apparent that Miss Brill is starving for warmth and companionship. She tenderly caresses her fur as if it were a beloved pet. Despite of her loneliness, she is considering herself a part of this family that the band is entertaining with its music. But in reality she is more of an observer, a voyeur, and not an active participant in life as it unfolds. She is looking forward to eavesdropping on other people's conversations, believing herself to be quite an expert in remaining unnoticed. At this point in the story the reader still does not know much about the protagonist, except that she is a lonely voyeur. Then one of her observations about the way she talked about the old people and how they looked as though they had just come in from dark little rooms-cupboards, she described them as, whom she sees every Sunday at the park hints to the reader that she might be one of those people. The pieces of the puzzle, of course, fall into place at the end of the story, when her room is described as "the little dark room-her room like a cupboard". This is the conclusion of the story, when Miss Brill is able to see herself and her surroundings in the new light. Her new self-awareness is brought about by disparaging remarks of the young lovers who refer to Miss Brill as "that stupid old thing" and to her precious fur as "a fried whiting". This is Miss Brill's moment of epiphany. She is as old as the other park-goers, her fur is a pitiful necklet, and she foregoes her usual Sunday slice of honeycake. In spite of her newly found self-awareness, Miss Brill still denies some of her own emotions when "she thought she heard something crying" at the very end of the story. The tears are obviously her own.

In Tell-Tale Heart, the man was obsesses with the elderly mans' "evil eye" and could not get that out of his mind. He felt that the only way to rid himself of that "evil eye" was to kill the old man. He went to the old mans room every night and stood over him. He thought of the perfect crime to eliminate his fears of that eye that he was so paranoid about. He killed the old man and dismembered his body. He placed the body parts in the panels of the wood floor, and was sure that no one would ever be able to find the body. When the police arrived because of someone calling them, he was not even worried about it, until he just lost his own senses and continued to hear the old man's hear beating. He sat there with the police for a long period of time, but was unable to get the sound of the man's heart out of his head. He was not able to control his mind. He felt guiltier by the second; he went crazy. He turned mad and confessed his crime to the police. His conscience got the best of him.

Buy cheap compare and contrast term paper

In conclusion, the stories are very well written by both authors. Both have different styles of writing, which makes them unique. They differ with the exact story lines, but are very strongly written. In my opinion, these are neat pieces of writing.

The term interest group refers to any group that, on the basis of one or more shared attitudes, makes certain claims upon other groups in the society for the establishment, maintenance, or enhancement of forms of behavior that are implied by the shared attitudes…. He also states that from the interaction in groups arises certain common habits of response, which are called norms or shared attitudes. What this means is that groups form because the progenitors share one or more beliefs, and that when individuals interact with these groups, the shared attitudes of that group become the attitude of the individual participating. This group interaction gives the individual a frame of reference to evaluate for himself other events and behaviors. What Truman is saying in his theory is not a new concept, in fact, it is just the age-old 'group mentality' theory. When someone becomes involved with a particular group, he assimilates himself into their collective. Truman takes this theory one step further however, and applies it to American politics.

According to Truman, interest groups have traditionally been neglected in our explanation of government. He says, however, that interest groups have been neglected because only recently has their significance been forced to the attention of political scientists. This is true because, excluding the last few decades, the number of formally organized groups in the United States been minimal. It wasn't until 1 and Herring with his book Group Representation Before Congress was the novelty of interest groups formally addressed. It is argued, Truman says, that any attempt at the interpretation of politics in terms of group patterns inevitably "leaves something out" or "destroys something essential" about the process of "our" government. He says, however, that the argument suggests that the things "left out" are the individual and a totally inclusive unity called "society" or "the state." But, he says, that the argument must assume a differentiation between the individual and the collective unity of a group, and this is not so. Truman says these assumptions are "essentially unwarranted."

In our society, we do not find individuals unless they are already affiliated with a particular group, be it social, economic, or spiritual in nature. Truman interjects that complete isolation is so rare that it has become a hypothetical situation. "The individual" and "the group" are at most merely convenient ways to classify behavior, two ways of approaching the same phenomena, not different things. The second difficulty inherent in any attempt at a group interpretation of the political process, Truman says, is that such an explanation must ignore the greater unity designated as society or the state. Were this in fact true, he says, then not only the interest group but even the political party should be considered an abnormality.

Men, wherever they are observed, are creatures participating in those established patterns of interaction that we call groups. It is man's nature to conglomerate for the betterment of his being. Except for the most casual, all groups involve power. These groups exert their power in two interdependent ways. In the first case, Truman says, a group's power is exerted over its members. In the second case, presuming the group becomes a formal interest group, it exerts its power over other groups in the society.

From Truman's definition any group, organized or not, that has a shared attitude toward goals and methods for achieving them should be classified as an interest group. Truman is essentially saying that since man naturally functions as a member of a group, it is more useful and accurate for political observers to define government as the interaction between particular interest groups. If we are to accept the sociologist's assumption that people act and interact only as members of groups, then it is essential that the governmental process be viewed as one of interest group action and interaction.
