Theme Statement With resurrection great achievements will be accomplished.

"It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done..."Charles Dickens', A Tale of Two cities, implies the thought of reinventing the reader and making great sacrifices. The theme is portrayed mainly by two characters, Sydney Carton and Dr. Manette. The theme is shown throughout the novel. This theme is also intertwined with love and good against bad.

Dr. Manette in the beginning of the novel, was in solitary confinement for 18 long years. This caused him to go insane. For instance when he was released into Mr. Defarge's care he started to believe he was a shoe cobbler and could not even remember his own name. But later when he is reunited with his daughter, Lucie Manette, is resurrected back to his old self.

Ironically, Jerry Cruncher implies the actual possibility of resurrection being in the business of " grave robbing." Later on in the novel he discovers that Old Foulon, one of the French aristocrats, has faked his death to survive uprising but when it was later known he was alive, he was later murdered, which exemplifies good against evil.

Yet, Sydney Carton plays the most significant role of all.

In the beginning of the novel he helps Charles Darnay be acquitted of treason charges, but this would not be the last time he helps him. Darnay yet again gets tried for treason and would surely face death. Carton, whom is deeply in love with Lucie Manette, vows to do anything and everything for her, sacrifices his own life in the place of her husband, Mr. Darnay, for her to be happy. Before his execution she kisses him and Carton says " I am the Resurrection and the life, saith the Lord he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." The child who lay upon her bosom bore his name. The child shall be resurrected as Carton, as the parents tell his story of honored. And the child will be free of the aristocratic name and therefore his life will be saved. This gave his life the ultimate meaning of his resurrection.

Another example is the transformation of Mr. Defarge, when he makes a moral uprising against his sinister wife Madame Defarge. She tells him he is losing sight of the revolution's cause. His devotion to help the Manette's caused for his transformation.

The great theme in this novel expresses itself through much smaller themes. Sacrifice is one of them. The example of which Carton sacrifices himself for Darnay implies the thought one must to achieve resurrection through Lucie's child, and Carton displays that to the fullest.

The theme in this novel has a very universal meaning and might apply for a lot of readers in life. The thought of reinvention is appealing for most people to change personalities or point of views.

" It was the best of time, it was the worst of times..."

The theme of this novel was written from the stand point of Charles dickens. The act of goodness being brought out from the bad. From his view it seems more personal and was beautifully written. Instead of a sad-feeling ending the reader gets a sense of achievement through the eyes of Mr. Carton, which stands out among readers.
