Al Ghazzali A Liberal Education

A liberal arts education seeks to open one's mind to the true meaning of life itself and encourages one to contemplate the truth and understanding of human realities, which is what Al-Ghazzali set out to do after years of being an educator of religious sciences.Having a hunger for knowledge was part of his nature from an early age and as he continued his studies it became evident to him that his faith, which is having confidence in justifying a belief without actually having proof, in knowledge was being challenged and he must prove to himself that what he believed to be true undoubtedly was.Just as a liberal education aims at making one go beyond what they are familiar with and search for other ways of doing things by leading one out of ignorance, Al-Ghazzali, too, was trying to reason, or justify his beliefs, by continuing to question his so called answers to what he thought to be true.

First, he set out to test his sense perception to see if he could make himself doubt the truths he believed to be real and his intellect-judge helped him with this process. After months of questioning his belief, God cured his unhealthy condition and his confidence in the certainty of the truths in question was restored. After restoring his confidence, Al-Ghazzali then decided to study the science of theology, which did not provide the answers he was looking for because to him, theology was not able to dispel the confusion that arises due to the views of different men.Realizing that his purpose was not to disparage theologians, Al-Ghazzali then started on the science of philosophy, which also was uneventful because after self educating himself he found that it was "deceitful and confusing" (Al-Ghazzali 175) because in his mind the Islamic philosophers had not devoted enough time and attention to studying the science of philosophy. After studying the sciences, Al-Ghazzali decided to study another method, mysticism, which sparked his interest because the mystics were men whose experiences were real and not just based on words.Through the mystics, he was able to ascertain that there was a difference between knowing truths and actually experiencing the truths that have guided him through life. His passion for knowledge and his self-torture can be related to a myth about such passions.

Camus' myth of Sisyphus can be related to Al-Ghazzali's struggles because both Sisyphus and Al-Ghazzali have a passion for discovering what they are capable of doing and how they can achieve their respective purposes in life even though they may fail at the end of the task at hand.Sisyphus kept rolling the rock up the hill only to see it fall down time after time but the mere fact that he kept doing it was enough for him to feel that he achieved something in his life and the same can be said for Al-Ghazzali because he, too, regardless of failure, kept on his path for the pursuit of the truth and the knowledge he thought to be true through his faith and reasoning. For it is in a liberal education that one can explore the true meaning of knowledge while contemplating the truth about life, the human ideas of one's faith and the reasoning behind what is undoubtedly true.Write my Essay on Al Ghazzali: A Liberal Education for me
