Sermon on the Mount is a guide for us to live together in harmony and enjoy the life God has promised us both on earth and beyond. Although the teachings and parables that Jesus delivered seem impossible to live by, most of us in some way live by these guides every day without giving it a second thought. Our society is based on the laws of the Ten Commandments, and is followed even by those who consider themselves atheists. Most of the laws created in our justice system are based on the Ten Commandments.I will show why the Ten Commandments are important and how they affect our everyday life.

Most of us respect and love our parents. We do so unconditionally, not because we're supposed to.It's just automatic, but it is the 5th Commandment.Honor Thy Mother and Our Father.

The 6th Commandment, Thy Shalt Not Kill.Although our prisons are filled with murderers, the general population is not killers. We all get angry and sometimes may even lose control, but we don't kill. Why is that?Is it because we've been taught that it is wrong or is it because as human beings we don't automatically have the instinct to kill when things don't go our way?Why is it a crime to kill someone?Imagine what our life would be like if it weren't a crime.

If adultery is an acceptable ground for divorce, that would leave you to be believe that it is a crime and in some states it is.However in most states it's just considered to be immoral. It is the 7th Commandment, Thy Shalt Not Commit Adultery.Although it may not be a punishable crime by law, we still know it's wrong morally.

Thou Shalt Not steal; the 8th Commandment is a punishable crime. In some countries you can even have your fingers cut off if you're caught stealing. If you don't consider this to be a major issue, consider how you'd feel if your car were stolen, or your house broken into.

Perjury is also a crime punishable by law; and it's also the th Commandment.Thou Shalt Not Bare False Witness. This could also mean vicious gossip that could hurt someone's reputation.

I've covered the 5th to th Commandments because these are the ones that most of us understand and are mostly affected by.Recently there has been much discussion in the media about separation of state and religion. There have been protests to have plaques of The Ten Commandments removed from public places such as schools, federal buildings, and town halls.

As I witness these angry protestors argue their rights of freedom of speech and whatever cause they seem to be protesting at that moment, I wonder how many of them would feel if there were never any Ten Commandments for us to be guided by.

You can see that the 6th to th Commandment is embedded in our justice system and punishable by law. Prayer was removed from our schools, because we didn't want to infringe upon someone else's rights. However, my children and grandchildren were exposed to all kinds of vile, violent, and sexually explicit rhetoric called "rap."Our youth have become more violent and desensitized. While there is no proof that this is the result of the removal of prayer, it's cause for concern.

Just consider this.First we remove The Ten Commandments from the schools, public buildings and places.Next we re-examine our laws that are based on The Ten Commandments. Finally, we remove those laws from the books.Sounds outrageous and unlikely, but definitely not impossible. We are supposed to be a civilized society, however without some laws and guidelines, no doubt we'd act more like animals than human beings.

Although I skipped the first four Commandments they are as equally as important because they speak of love.Love of God, self, and our neighbor. It is this love perhaps that keeps us human. It is love and respect for each other that keep us from becoming barbaric murderers, and thieves.

When asked if loving my enemy and turning the other cheek has any validity, I'd have to say yes.We turn the other cheek when a driver cuts us off almost causing an accident, or when a neighbor plays his music too loud after repeated requests to turn it down.We don't pull out a gun and shoot them.I believe this is sometimes taken out of context.Loving your enemy doesn't mean you're going to be best buddies, or turning your cheek to be slapped again. It just means to be forgiving.

You have seen examples of the importance of The Ten Commandments in our life everyday. It affects how we treat one another.Even in areas you haven't thought of such as the courtroom or viciously gossiping about someone. Without laws that are based on The Ten Commandments we would be an uncivilized society lost in the wilderness
