The United States is generally classified as a Gesellschaft, or "associational society".A Gessellshaft is a term given to a society that is generally large and contains untrusting members that handle matters in a non-personal manner. They rather arrange deals in the form of a contract rather than a face to face talk dictated by tradition. The small town, traditional, personal relationships are found in a Gemeinschaft. Most societies try to hold on to there traditional ways of life but are slowly moving toward the Gesellschaft way of life.

There are five major forms of institutions in a society. They are family, religion, economy, government, and education.Every society contains these five forms of institutions for the same reasons. The family is needed to replenish society with new members.Religion answers many questions of the unknown and gives meaning to ones life.An Economy is needed to access food, clothing and shelter.A stable government is placed to maintain a sense of peace and order. And last, but certainly not least, Education.Education is used to teach culture and train new members of the society.American society differs form many other societies. An education to most countries is a privilege, but in America it is a right, and Americans main goal is to educate the entire country. As of 1, 85.5 percent of the people in the United States between the ages of 0-4 earned a high school diploma. Living in the United States allows you to move up and down the social ladder, make choices for yourself, and gives everyone the same rights.Individualism in America can be a great thing, but with the good comes the bad.Divorce rates are at an all time high, and the Individualism is to blame. We have the power to choose who we fall in love with and we also have the power to fall out of love with.As a result the American family is being strongly affected by the pros and cons of cultural individualism.

America is a socially stratified society and is an open system. Some characteristics of an open system are; there is not an institutionalized class, class lines are unclear, status is usually achieved, and the presence of social mobility. Each individual has a number of social rolls that they posses. One man could be a manager of a bank, a husband, father, and a member of a country club. Some rolls are more important than others, and it is up to the individual to decide which rolls to put more effort towards. The United States contains many types of people and they have many different rolls. There are two ways to obtain a roll, and they are achieved and ascribed. An achieved status would be the president of a company, because the individual earned the position with hard work.Rolls like gender, age, race, ethnic background, and religion are all involuntary rolls and are known as ascribed. There is both class mobility and status mobility in America.Class mobility is as simple as a college student receiving a high paying job. They went from one class to another with little to no effort.Status mobility however can be difficult to achieve.Just because you have all the money doesn't mean you will gain all the respect.Status mobility is not up to individual as much as there peers.
