As one looks throughout American history several reoccurring trends are noticed. These trends are apparent in many racial and ethnic groups. Many immigrant groups entered America, leaving everything they had behind, to attain their goal of the American dream. However, all immigrants faced an immense amount of racism by the White Anglo- Saxon Protestants. The Irish, Chinese, Blacks, and Mexicans all faced the same type of institutional racism by the United States. The racism occurred in many respects. All the ethnic groups were subject to cheap labor, they had housing that was often inadequate and separate from the rest of society, they were all given stereotypes, and after their hardships were over the United States granted to apologies to none of them.


When the United States began to form its foundation, it became apparent that an abundant supply of labor was needed. There was so much to be built and so much work to be done; this created the need for an immense amount of labor, and of course cheap labor was preferred. The African American slaves were the epitome of this. They were sold as property, and their payment was basically in the form of food. Blacks worked long and tedious hours and received no compensation. Originally they came over by choice, in the form of indentured servants. Their owner would provide them with food and shelter for a fixed amount of years of work that they would provide to their owner. The Whites later forced them in to a world of slavery. There simply weren't enough people to keep up with the rapid growth of tobacco fields, rice and indigo plantations, so the work force they had was made to work twice as hard. The Irish came over for their pursuit of the American dream. But when they came over they faced xenophobia. Although most of them had the skills necessary to work they were denied employment. They competed with Blacks for jobs and wages, but were denied employment on the railroads, in construction and in service jobs. Store windows had signs that read "No Irish Need Apply." Consequently, they were left poor and starving. In the mid 1800's Chinese immigrants, mostly male, came to America to make money and return home to their families. They thought they would find "streets of gold." Instead they were subjected to harsh working conditions on the railroad; many even faced fatalities due to the dangerous nature of the job. The Irish saw the Chinese as a treat to their jobs and soon took over the building of the railroads. The Chinese had to survive somehow, and consequently took jobs as cooks and cleaners. Ironically, they mostly worked for the Irish who took their jobs away. Lastly, the Mexicans who owned a large portion of America before the invasion by the Whites were subjected to very cheap and tiring labor. They had to leave behind their own independence and farm for the white man. Mexicans worked in farms and plotting fields, many times ten to twelve hours a day. Clearly, there is a reoccurring theme of immigrants being forced to do hard work for little money. It is ironic then, that we are called the land of opportunity, where the American dream is possible for all. That is the last thing these immigrants received when they came over.


Housing was a huge disappointment for all of these immigrant groups. They all lived in undesirable areas and were segregated from the rest of the community.The African slaves had to make do with whatever shelter their owners gave them. Because they were "owned" they could be forced into whatever type of living situation was most convienent for the owner. Some lived in barns and some lived in backhouses that the owners provided. When they were finally freed, they were subjected to project type housing. They attempted to move into the cities and blend in, but they resorted to ghetto areas with other blacks in order to feel comfortable. Their living areas were called "darkytowns, blackbelts, and bronzevilles." The Irish lived in New York, in a place labeled "Hell's Kitchen." They, along with the other groups, didn't pick where to liveby choice. The society, the whites, basically forced them to live there. It was overcrowded and dirty. When the Chinese men came over to build the railroads they were put in group housing away from the city. There were no women, at least no women that were permissible to them. Again, they didn't choose their living situation; it was given to them by the government. When women were sent over, they formed families and created areas known as "Chinatown." These were severely overcrowded and lacked essential things such as running water and sanitation facilities. Several families were crowded into single rooms and apartments, this obviously created uncomfortable living conditions. The Mexicans weren't necessarily thrown into a certain housing area. Because they were paid so cheaply, they couldn't afford to live in the city with everyone else. They formed their own communities outside the city, which turned into what we call pueblos. Hamlet disregarded Horatio?s warnings, followed the Ghost of his father, and heard of the murder that took place. This is where he learned of his quest to revenge his father, the main plot of the play. But Hamlet still wasn?t sure of the validity of the Ghost, so he decided to put the Ghost?s accusations to a test. There is a play tonight before the King One scene of it comes near the circumstance Which I have told thee of my father?s death. . . Observe my uncle. If his occulted guilt Does not itself unkennel in one speech, It is a damned ghost that we have seen (156). By having a group of players reenact his father?s murder, he was able to tell from Claudius? (the murderer of King Hamlet) reaction that the Ghost was not of the devil. To take this sub-plot out would have left the reader/audience with many questions, especially in Shakespeare?s time. People would wonder if the ghost was of good intent, and if Hamlet was wise in revenging his father.


In many versions of Hamlet, the character of Fortinbras is taken out. Fortinbras is the heir to Norway, but his father lost almost all of his inheritance to King Hamlet. Fortinbras wanted revenge, but he was told he could not take it because the land was lost fairly in an agreed contract. Fortinbras represents Hamlet after he has learned of his father?s murder, the only difference is that he does not take revenge because King Fortinbras was not murdered. Although what he contributes can easily be omitted from the play, many feel that it ruins the play at the end. After all of the heirs to the Denmark throne have been killed, Fortinbras comes to Denmark from a victorious conquer of Poland. In his dying breath Hamlet said, But I do prophesy th?election lights On Fortinbras. He has my dying voice (08). Because much of the Denmark land once was Fortinbras? inheritance, Fortinbras was enable to claim the kingdom. This ending is needed to make the play a true tragedy. According to Aristotle, a tragedy is a a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force, . . . reaching a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that excites pity or terror while leaving one with a sense of reconciliation rather than one of horror by presenting a view of life in which the idea of justice is central (Handout, emphasis added). Knowing that he will make a good king, and having Hamlet?s blessing, Fortinbras taking over the kingdom creates the sense of reconciliation that the reader/viewer needs.


There are lines through out the play that make the reader/audience question Hamlet?s true feelings for Ophelia, but everyone agrees that they did have a relationship together. The relationship is first brought up in Act I, Scenewhen Laertes, Ophelia?s brother, warns her about it, and later on in the same scene, her father, Polonius warns her again. Laertes seemed to believe that Hamlet had affection for his sister, but he doubted if Hamlet could act on his affections But you must fear, His greatness weighed, his will is not his own. For he himself is subject to his birth (54). On the other hand, Polonius at first doubted Hamlet?s feelings. He told Ophelia, These blazes, daughter, Giving more light than heat, extinct in both. . . You must not take for fire. . . Believe so much in him that he is young, . . . Do not believe his vows; for they are brokers. . . (60). He then forbade her ever to speak to Hamlet again. Later on, however, Polonius thought it a good reason for Hamlet?s madness, and thought he would use Ophelia to test his idea. This ties the relationship into the main plot of the story because Hamlet is acting mad because of his knowledge of his father?s murder. In this time Hamlet both says that he loved her and denies it, but he is acting in such a mad way that Polonius is unsure of Hamlet?s true feelings towards his daughter. In the final act Hamlet says again that he loved Ophelia, in front of all those attending her funeral. In Hamlet, Ophelia represents innocence and one without knowledge. She is the image of Hamlet before he discovered the truth of his father?s death. If the relationship between Hamlet and Ophelia were to be taken out of the play it would ruin the flow, and it would take away other sub-plots that also relate to the main plot, especially Laertes? revenge on Hamlet for Polonius? death.


For many authors, to take so much as a word out of their work it is destroying it. For plays though, it is meant for words to be changed and added, but not for whole plots and sub-plots. To take out such a big section of a play is disastrous because it leaves the reader and audience with unanswered questions. The sub-plots add to the plot complexity, let the audiences become more involved, and let them all leave feeling that they had seen some characteristic of themselves in the play. Others however, can have the tendency to differ drastically. After reading Waris Dirie's


autobiography, Desert flower, and Susan Power's national bestseller, the Grass Dancer,


one may conclude that the female gender often tend to have the most impact from their


culture. These two books clearly prove that the male domination among certain tribes and


civilizations still stands. As we look back at our pasts, and take a good look at our


present, we canclearly see that our world is most definitively run by males. Even our own


nations is almost entirelyrun by manes. In fact, itwasn'tuntil the mid sixties that


women began to have their own equal rights. Until that time, women were known to have


only one very basic, very underpaid job-housewife. The requirements were in fact quite


simple Cook for husband, clean for husband, and take care on offspring. With our


evolved ways of thinking, women living in our modern world have been given more


jobs, responsibilities, and quite Frankly, more chances of being heard, than being told


to keep quiet.


Susan Power'sThe grass Dancer, tells the tale of a native American family, living


ina more or less modernized reservation-type community. In the first few chapters, the


book talks about one of the younger members of the reservation, a girl named Pumpkin


At the ripe age ofabout 18,pumpkin is given the challenge of dealing with cultural


surroundings in addition to dealing with her own personal issues. In Desert Flower, Waris


Dirie gives us an in depthlook at her life growing up in the poverty that Somalia has to


offer, and the various horrible truths which led to her escapefrom home and pursuit of


personal freedom. In addition to male domination, the two books take a look at the lives


two young girls, both unique in culture, and both having to deal with the cold truth that


may, if not giventhe proper consideration, lead to theirown destinies. It is true that


Warisand Pumpkin come from different cultural backgrounds. With this in mind, one


may conclude that they have very different cultural, even social surroundings.


Cultural Barriers.


As stated in the Third College Edition ofThe New World Dictionary of American


English, a culture is defined as "The ideas, customs, skills, arts, etc, of a people or group,


that are transferred, communicated, or passed along, as in or to succeeding generations".


Since birth, Waris Dirie lived by, and was used to the various customs ofher people.


Living in barren desert that is Somalia, Waris belonged to a tribe of nomads, who


constantly moved from place to place in order to fulfill their needs regarding food, shelter,


etc. Waris's culture is very primitive in beleif.As a result, Waris's only form of education


were the lessons, customs and teachings, which had been passed down generation, finally


reaching her. Growing up in Somalia, Waris had no concrete form of education in the


sense of grammar, science, and mathematics. It was tradition that all young females, prior


to marriage, undergo a surgical procedure which involved the removal of a section of the


female's genitalia. As described in the book, this was done as a method of purification for


marriage. and because, it was believed that the females should engage in sexual


intercourse with the sole purpose for reproduction, not pleasure. In addition, females in


Somalia were not allowed to decide who they wanted to marry. Husbands were chosen


according to the number of camels the wife's family could trade her off for. The more


camels, the more the female was valued by her family.


For a female Sioux Indian such as Pumpkin, living in a reservation, offered a


different style of life. First, women were actually worth more than just a couple of camels


as in Waris's society. They were valued by their skill, knowledge and age. Women had the


freedom to choose who they thought they should be married to. Also, the Sioux Indians


were not nomads, and therefore did not have to move on a constant basis. One other


aspect that may have formed a barrier between the two characters, was that of Waris's


desperate battle to forget her past and culture, and Pumpkin's fear of even doing so


Social Barriers.


Living in a tribe of nomads, Waris only knew of the members of her tribe-no one


else.Pumpkin however was exposed to a greater number of people, and had greater


knowledge as to the environment that lay beyond the confines of her reservation. Unlike


Waris, Pumpkin was the first Grass dancer, and therefore had more value toward her tribe.


She was going to go off to college and get an education-something Waris would never


have dreamed of getting.


Gender-Based Barriers.


Waris had NO rights. As a female growing up in Somalia, she was looked upon


as a piece of property. Nothing more. She was given hope of growing stronger, and


certainly no hope for a brighter future. Women were usually traded off for camels, and


made to accomplish simple, "uncomplicating" jobs. Pumpkin on the other hand was free.


She was able to make her own decisions, draw out her own conclusions, and live a more


comforting life. In addition, women living in the reservation were looked upon and treated


like equals.


Conclusion/Closing thoughts.


Now that the barriers which separate Waris from Pumpkin have been discussed,


one must acknowledge the fact that as different as both characters seem to be. they do


however possess one unique similarity. Both Waris and Pumpkin desperately want to be


free in soul, mind and body. In some way, whether it be physically, or emotionally. As


natural as it may be for a race of people to have it's own beliefs, and ways of life, one


must ask whether or not it is correct to follow these customs at the expense of female

But all their lives are disrupted by the arrival of the sinister Herald Loomis and his daughter Zonia, in search of Heralds missing wife.


In Sweet Home Alabama it is about a Melanie Carmichael, a small-town girl who moves to the Big Apple and while still in her 0s becomes a famous fashion designer. Shes in love with Andrew, whose mother is mayor of New York. After he proposes to Melanie in Tiffanys, whom he has rented for the occasion, she flies back home to Alabama to take care of unfinished business.


Specifically, she doesnt want Andrew to discover that she is already married to a local boy, and that her family doesnt own a moss-dripped plantation. Her folks live in a luxury mobile home with lots of La-Z-Boys. Her husband, Jake was her high school sweetheart, but, looking ahead at a lifetime of dirty diapers and dishes with a loser, she fled north. His plan prove himself, to earn her respect and get her back again. Thats why hes never given her the divorce.


When Melanie returns home, the locals, who remember her high school pranks, greet her. Her parents, who wile away their days lounging around the double-wide practicing sitcom dialogue, look on with love and sympathy, because they know that sooner or later shell realize that home is right here.The way Melanie goes back to her home town and asks her husband to give her a divorce is a way to say that she wants to move on with her life.


In a way her husband has been reluctant to sign the divorce papers she had sent time and time again. From what I get from the movie is that he is not ready to let go of the good memories that he had a young child with the girl he fell in love with. She on the other hand is hiding the fact at first that she wants this so that she can get married to her new man in her life.


The family morals in both stories are somewhat the same. The parents of Michelle, are very family oriented and do not feel that now matter where she goes to, she will not forget where she was brought up. In the play of"Joe turners Come & Gone", the family morals seem to be the same. How the wife in the story always was helping the blind man, and doing the right thing.


In my real life family in comparison to the family of the two stories are different. My family is always on the run, we never spend almost any time when I was younger and living with them together. Now that I look at things, we spend more time now as a family then we ever did. What I mean by this statement is as follows.


Both my sister and me are living away with our significant others, and bought our own houses. My sister is married and has two kids, a boy of five years old and a girl ofyears old. My parents now try to spend more time with us because we no longer live with them. Like in sweet home Alabama the mother tried to over compensate by doing everything for the daughter when she came home. My parents try to do the same things with both my sister and I.


The families in the stories try to find a mutual point in their relationship so that every one makes the right decisions in their lives with the background of a solid growing up during there lives. In my option, life decisions are sometimes different based on each person background. A family with solid morals will play a big role how somebody lives their life and the path they choose to go on. Every since the raising of a baby, you always want to teach the baby what is wrong and right and to hopefully distinguish when to say no and yes to certain things in life.


The families I the two stories are all looking for the perfect family ways of life. They way they interact with each other and people outside of their own. In my opinion the family is a very important word because it signifies love and many more other things that a person should have during his life. I at times wish my family would be more like the typical American family that get along just fine and just have the normal perfect life. We all cannot have what we have, and it also in a way make s us all unique in on own special way and makes the world evolve into what it is today.

because it was simple enough for manufacturers to copy. Even though the


machine made attaining cotton faster, slaves were still pushed to work harder

where the white southerners believed blacks belonged. Northerners knew


better. Harriet Beecher-Stowe, a female, black abolitionist was aware of


these conditions. She wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, which was published in


185, and described the incredible cruelty and horrors of slavery. Stowe


wanted to write something that would make the whole nation feel what an


accursed thing slavery is. Her novel became widely popular, and within a


year, readers had bought 00,000 copies. Wherever it went, it carried it's


powerful message of the evils of slavery. She hoped the novel would bring a


peaceful end to slavery, but instead it seemed to bring the nation closer to


war. Of course, not all Southerners supported slavery, nor did all Northerners

Southerners went to extremes. Their concern lay in maintaining the plantation

Southerners. Harriet's novel was one of the many things that sparred mistrust


between the North and South. The North didn't trust the South because they


refused to help Southern plantation owners capture slaves. North depended


on the South for making money, and the South depended on the slaves to pick


their cotton. This created the Northern fear of Competition. The North was


afraid that South would gain power of crops and put them out of business.


This meant that slavery would double. The North was torn between giving the


slaves their rightful choices, or keeping the economy balanced. It was a


matter of moral standards. The South wanted to break away from the union,


while the North still wanted the two territories to stick together. This conflict


was the main cause of the Civil War. The South argued about their state's


rights. They said a state could nullify a federal law it did not consider


constitutional. Southern states based their right to leave the union, on the fact


the original 1 states had existed separately before they formed together for


the United States. The South could break their allegiance to the union because


they were not part of the original U.S. If they could form there own


confederacy, the South could continue the use of slaves while also keeping


their reign on the cotton industry.


The political issues that caused the Civil War, revolved around matters


that involved territorial subjects and slavery acts. In 180, the Missouri


Compromise was worked out and gained congressional approval. Missouri


was to be admitted as a slave state, and Maine would enter the union as a free


state. The compromise also prohibited slavery in other American territories


west of the Mississippi river and North of Missouri's southern boundary.


Stephen A. Douglas introduced a bill called the Kansas-Nebraska Act. It


proposed to divide the area into two territories that of Kansas and that of


Nebraska. It was implied that Kansas would become a slave state, and


Nebraska would be free of slavery. Popular sovereignty was also put into


effect. This act gave the voters, in each territory, the right to decide whether


to become a free state or a slave state. Together, they rendered the Missouri


Compromise meaningless.


As the South's dependence on slavery increased between 170 and


1860, the gap between the Southern cotton economy and industrial economy


of the North widened. The opposing goals and needs of the North and South


created a deeper conflict- a conflict that eventually lead to war. Basically, the


North fought to keep the union together, and give black slaves freedom, while


the South fought for their lifestyle, homes, and to keep things together


economically. The northerners had high moral issues while the Southerners


wanted to keep their plantations and cotton production. They weren't willing


to give up there slaves. There were too many conflicts between the two


territories, so they fought to resolve them. John Brown, a vengeful abolitionist


put it best, the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away, but with


blood. The north won the war, and ties were broken. The barrier they had


started to build so long ago finally crumbled.

However, I just thought that mom and dad were mad at each other, and being grown ups I figured they would not let a misunderstanding get between them. Not being able to comprehend the magnitude of what was going on, I convinced myself that it would blow over in time. Soon, I came to realize that divorce meant school with mom, holidays with dad, child support, new family members, visitation rights, long trips, arguments and parents verbally bashing each other sometimes in the presence of us children. It wasnt easy accepting the fact that I was going to have a "new" dad or that I wasnt going to be able to see my real dad as much as I was use to. My older siblings took to the change rather well and they were able to adjust quickly to their new unfamiliar environment. My little sister and I on the other hand were not as eager to move and start life over again in a new place. I was at that age where I understood just enough but not enough. My little sister was pretty much unaware of what was happening at first but later I think she began to realize that she was not going to be sleeping in her usual bed for much longer. Meeting and making new friends came easy for my little sister and me. I think that had something to do with our interesting sense of humor and strange antics. My older siblings had to work much harder to fit in, I feel it was because they were at that age when popularity plays a major role in ones acceptance. After a while though, they were able to make some friends. The only thing that really kept me sane during the whole ordeal was my passion for writing and playing basketball. I would spend hours on end alone in my room writing all kinds of short fictions, I guess that was my way of coping with the pain. I kept to myself a lot when at home, that caused some resentment on my siblings part and thus I became the target for all their displaced anger. I never remembered them being that way when our parents where together, thus I take it that that was their way of dealing with their frustrations of what was happening. I became quite use to it though, but when it got too much, I would hit the basketball courts and released my anger and frustration out on anyone who dared to challenge me to a game of twenty one. I never really understood or realized the effects of divorce on children until just recently. Now whenever I sit down and think about what happened and how it changed everything, it makes much more sense to me.


I believe that the topic of divorce is a serious one. It affects children in ways that many people cant even imagine. If it hadnt have happened to me, I probably would have never understood just how one who has been in such a situation might feel. I am not glad that it happened to us, but it did. Divorce in a way is a kind of death, it kills your innocence and immediately forces you to grow up and deal with issues that no child should ever have to. It denies you the opportunity and experiences of


family life that can be very essential for the molding of a child's character and personality. For some, and me in particular there is always that feeling of abnormality and void. I have always tried to find an answer for why it happened, and how my parents lost a love that was so strong in the beginning, but even after twelve years this question still remains unsolved. It still hurts a lot more than people would think and like most children of divorce it has left my siblings and I everlasting scars. My eldest sister (5) until recently has just overcome a long and drawn out battle (as I like to call it) with her identity. Her self-esteem was completely shattered after the divorce. True, I mentioned earlier that she adapted well in the beginning, but she faced some major problems with trying to fit in. She became very self-conscious about her looks and other related problems dealing with her appearance. She never thought of herself as good enough or worth anything. Out of all of us I think is was my big brother who handled the divorce best, but even he has never been the same since. He use to be the average boy who was rambunctious, confident, liked girlsand loved to play soccer. After the divorce, I found him to quite quiet, withdrawn, and slightly insecure. He is married now, and even though he does not like to admit it I know he has fears about his marriage ending up like our parents. It was my little sister who was affected most, shes been through a lot and is still going through a ton, much of which I feel is to too personal to mention. On a whole divorce has made us very skeptical about marriage, and commitment. It didnt work for our parents, why would it work for us? We grew up in two different families and homes, one family and one home will never be the norm for us.


Divorce isnt the cause of all of our problems, but it did affect our lives in a major way. Before I conclude this journal let me state that I do not blame my parents for anything that happened, it was not their fault that they could no longer live together. I just wanted to reveal through my personal experience with divorce the consequences it has on children. My parents divorce was terrible injustice and I hope that the next generation (my generation) will take marriage a bit more seriously, by really contemplating on it before they decide to run off to Vegas and do something that their children might suffer for later.

It also, somewhat, forced neutral countries to side with the U.S. because it threatened that if any country would aid one of the Axis countries then that country would no longer be given aid packages from the United States. A second policy imposed by Roosevelt was the moral embargo of July 18. This banned neutral countries from exporting planes and equipment to countries who engaged in the bombing of civilians. This made the U.S. look like the good guys because they were protecting the innocent people who were being killed just because the lived in a different country. By imposing these policies, the U.S. was disallowing the economic growth of the Axis countries and forcing them to support themselves, as long as they were against the Allies. These policies were a type of weapon that Roosevelt used in order to attack the enemy without formally declare war. Before the betrayal at Pearl Harbor occurred, a poll was taken of the U.S. citizens opinion about Roosevelt taking them into the war. Ninety-four percent were against the United States getting involved. If Roosevelt would have just attacked Japan first, he would have lost a great majority of the support he was receiving from the general population of the United States. All the facts lead to the very probable possibility that Roosevelt may have helped plan the attack at Pearl Harbor or at least gave the go-ahead to whoever did plan. It is no coincidence that half of the U.S. Navys gunboats were reassigned to Pearl Harbor only a couple of months before the attack. Roosevelt sent all the expendable ships to Pearl Harbor and all the carriers and battleships to run drills near San Diego. Roosevelt figured that, if he was going to allow American ships to be destroyed, they might as well be the ships that are out of date and inexpensive to replace, in comparison with some of the Navys other ships. The attack on Pearl Harbor enraged the American commoner so much that they changed their views completely and wanted Japan to pay for the surprise attack in Hawaii. After all, the American people only knew that negotiations were under way in Washington DC and that the U.S. was working for peace not war. They saw the attack on Pearl Harbor as an act of betrayal. Another fact, that contributes to the possibility of Roosevelt being involved in the planning of Pearl Harbor, is that the two commanding officers at the time of the attack were acquitted, in a retrial, of all accusations of their dereliction of their duties. Therefore, there must have been some reason why they didnt worry about the incoming planes. This reason is that they had orders, from a higher ranking official, to ignore the signals. This order may have come down from Roosevelt himself. An interesting event, which greatly supports my thesis, that occurred even before Japan or the U.S. had entered the war, was President Roosevelt and Secretary of the State Hull instructing Admiral William D. Leahy, then the Chief of Naval Operations, to create a war plan based on the contingency of the United States having to fight a two-ocean war. In the Pacific, against Japan, and in the Atlantic, against Italy and Germany. Why would Roosevelt have a war plan drawn up if he said he wasnt going to enter the war? It seems a bit odd, unless, of course, if he was planning on entering the war already and was just trying to find the right reason. Roosevelt may have seen that, sooner or later, the U.S. would have to go to war and they might as well be in control when the first shots are fired against Americans. Roosevelts master plan was very complex and involved a great deal of people. Two of the people who would be affected the most by this plan were Adm. Husband E. Kimmel and Gen. William Short. The reason they would be greatly affected was because they were the scapegoats. Adm. Kimmel, the Pearl Harbor commander, was kept in the dark by his superiors in Washington. Officials in Washington left Adm. Kimmel without any knowledge of the attack until it was too late, and then they blamed Adm. Kimmel for not being ready. The futures of Adm. Kimmel and Gen. Short were a small price to pay for the possibilities of what economic fortunes laid ahead of the U.S. All the planning and effort that went into this scheme, ended up allowing Roosevelt to enter World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor angered the general public of the United States, and if the majority of the people want something the congress will give it to them just so that they will have a job after the next election. Therefore the majority of the congressmen voted in favor of the U.S. entering the war on the side of the Allies. Roosevelt knew that if he could get one of the axis powers to attack Americans then he could get the U.S. in the war. Roosevelt and his cabinet carefully covered their tracks very carefully so as not to leave any signs that there was foul play. Roosevelt knew beforehand that Japan was going to attack, but he didnt take any drastic peace-keeping actions to prevent the attack, because he wanted a justifiable reason to enter the second World War.

Do you ever wonder where you would be if you made a different decision at one time or another?I do. Another way that Kings has changed me is by helping me to find out who I am religiously.After completing Belief and Unbelief, a course that I chose particularly to help me find out more about myself, I feel that I do have a better understanding of my religious preference.I was raised Roman Catholic and my mother was determined to educate me about the religion.When I was young I believed every word that I heard in church, such as God exists and there is a heaven .However, once I was old enough to truly examine the facts, I started to doubt most of what I had learned.The idea of God seemed just about as true as the Easter Bunny.I never told a single person about my beliefs for fear of rejection.People who are unsure of Gods existence are viewed negatively, as if they are the worst people on earth.Luckily, during my Belief and Unbelief course, I was introduced to the term, agnostic. This is a person who does not necessarily lack faith in God nor does he or she accept God as being real.I now understand that you do not have to choose either way until you have enough information.So if someone asks me what religion I am, I simply say, Im not quite sure, I am an agnostic.


As indicated by the Theory of The Hearts Desire, we all strive to love, be loved, belong, and blossom.However, even though the hearts desire is infinite, unfortunately your time on earth is limited.This leads to three possible responses, suppress the transcendent, conclude that life is existentially absurd, or be open to faith.Sadly enough I am leaning towards the first response I mentioned, suppressing anything that deals with a world outside of our own.I have not made a definite decision about God as of yet, however I do believe that life is too short to believe in something that I cannot see, touch, or feel. At the same time, I do wish there was a God, which is what an existentialist might say.At least I have a better understanding of the kind of person I am religiously.Also, since I am unsure, agnostic sounds a bit better than atheist.


Furthermore, throughout my college career, I have been planning for the future.Many of my plans seem a bit drastic.For instance, I am hoping to go to a graduate school in San Francisco.Most people find this very surprising since my bank account is rather low and I do not yet have a roommate in mind.However, after carrying out some community service work, the idea did not seem illogical.I chose to become a Big Sister in order to fulfill an assignment of my First Year experience class.My Little Sister, Charity was such an inspiration to me. I was supposed to be her role model but it often felt as if the roles were reversed.She was thirteen at the time and came from a very poor family.Her dream was to be a doctor and live in Florida.She was a very bright and determined girl. When I evaluated my plans of moving across the country, I thought of her and how disappointed she would be if I never made it.I am now dedicated to my studies and hope to be accepted to the graduate school of my choice, located in the city of my dreams.

My grandmother is nearly eighty years old and will not be around forever. I know I would regret not spending this precious time with her. In addition, I have realized why I have chosen a certain religious path and I feel comfortable discussing it with others.Finally, as a result of attending this college I have been inspired by a thirteen-year-old girl. I feel that I have a duty to boost her self-confidence, which makes me feel quite honorable.Many people complain about such a detailed core curriculum, however, I am grateful for it.
