Order your A Tale of Two Cities paper at affordable prices !In the classic novel A Tale of Two Cities, there is a clear distinction between the two classes of people. There are the nobility, the upper class, and the peasants, the lower class. This story takes place during the French Revolution between the years 1771 and 174, in the cities of London and Paris. During this time, the peasants were fed-up with the way they were being treated by the upper class. Many members of the upper class even referred to the lower class as "dogs".The nobles lived in the lap of luxury imposing taxes on all of the poors' hard earned money, while the ragged peasants were starving to death. Many terrifying scenes were in plain sight of the noble's daily and very few did anything to help. The most obvious display of complete disregard shown by the nobles was when the marquis carriage ran over and killed a boy, and the raping of a pregnant peasant committed by the Evremonde brothers.

Clearly shown in the book, is the nobility's pure hatred of the lower class. In one instance, a marquis carriage was racing down the narrow inner city streets, with total disregard to any people or objects in its way. Suddenly, the carriage jolts to a halt, upon inspection, the driver sees that a small peasant boy has been caught in the wheel and was killed. When the boy's father rushes to him and cries out, "Killed! Dead!" the marquis Evremonde, simply threw a gold coin at him. Of course, the peasant doesn't want anything to do with the noble's money and left it in the street. Before the carriage drove away, one brave woman threw the coin back into the carriage. This act of rebellion makes the marquis extremely upset, and in a fit of anger he yells out, "I would ride over any of you very willingly, and exterminate you from the earth. If I knew which rascal threw at the carriage, and if that brigand were sufficiently near it, he could be crushed under the wheels." and he drives away. This whole time the aristocrat hasn't even so much as stepped out of the carriage. Apparently, he thought a gold coin is payment for human life. This event is a prelude to the other despicable acts the Evermonde family commits on members of the lower class, including their 'right' to throw whoever they like into jail for any reason they choose.

A mystery that is revealed to us in the reading of this novel is the reason why Dr. Manette is held in prison for 18 years of solitary confinement. In the year before his imprisonment, he witnessed a crime committed by two noble brothers, the Evremonde brothers. They thought it would be okay to 'borrow' a peasant's wife and have their way with her simply because she was from the lower class. The woman's husband, however, wouldn't allow this to happen. So the Evremondes made him pull their cart like a horse till he broke down and died. With no other man to save her, the brothers took her to a house in the country, which they took over upon arriving, and did what they wanted with her. She had a younger brother, however, who tried to save her and in his attempt, was stabbed by one of the brothers. After being raped by these nobles, the woman went into a trance and screamed for the entire night, repeating the same phrase over and over, "My husband, my father, and my brother! 1 4 5 6 7 810 11 1, Hush!" The noble men decide they need a doctor to 'fix' her; they turn to Dr. Manette. When he came upon this display and learned the story from the dying younger brother, he was disgusted. After both the woman and brother have died, the Evermonde brothers send the doctor home. Later, he writes a letter to the secretary of the government and tells him of the horrible murders. In the letter, he says, "I Alexander Manette, unhappy prisoner, denounce the Evremonds to the last of their race. I denounce them to Heaven and to earth." It so happens, that the secretary was friends with the brothers and gave them the letter. In turn for writing that one letter, the doctor was forced into 18 years of imprisonment causing him to have great flaws in his character for the rest of his life.

Dicken's makes you feel sorry for the peasants as you read this book, and for good reason. In the end, the peasants stage a revolution and kill any member of the upper class they can get their hands on. All that anger it took to kill so many came from events such as the ones explained that showed just what cruel people most of the nobility were.

Order your Rock is Dead paper at affordable prices with custom writing service! In the 170's, Sha-Na Na keyed the phrase, "Rock 'n' Roll is Hear to Stay," and evidently they were right because with its everlasting exuberance, Rock and Roll has transcended gracefully through the decades. Rock music is defined by it's "strong beat" and its "repetition" (Merriam-Webster, 64); however, in the beginning, Rock and Roll had very stereotypical characteristics like energetic, "catchy hooks" (One Stop). But, as the years progressed Rock and Roll proceeded to intertwine with many other forms of music. Solidifying its existence well into the new millennium, with the three most diverse sub-cultures of any musical genre Hard Rock, Soft Rock, and Punk Rock.

One of the first digressions from traditional Rock and Roll is that of Hard Rock, which truly made a name for itself in the seventies with the intoxicating sounds of the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Hard Rock roots, however, stem back into the sixties with the "intersection of blues rock and pychedelia" (One Stop). The first, most typical, element of Hard Rock is the loud, abrasive guitar solos, which are obviously designed with no definite ending because they can last up to, and in excess, of ten minutes. Other key characteristics of Hard Rock are the sing-a-long choruses and the stadium like venues; a modern stereotype that has been set forth by such bands as ACDC and Van Halen. And although traditional Hard Rock is almost extinct, some post-modern day bands still hold true to the Hard Rock style like Pearl Jam and Urge Overkill, for example.

The second most obvious detour from Rock and Roll is known as Soft Rock, which, like Hard Rock, surfaced in the seventies. Even so, the sixties gave rise to such Soft Rock artists as Bobby Darin, Neil Sedaka, and Bobby Vinton who all contributed to the popularization of Soft Rock (W.W. Norton, L.68). The two styles, Hard and Soft Rock, symbolized the direction Rock and Roll was heading; they were a sort of fork in the road. Soft Rock, however, started out much less objectionable and more commercial than its counterpart. Bands like America, The Eagles, and Chicago, for instance, grabbed their audiences' attention with simple melodies, catchy hooks and extravagant productions (One Stop). In its prime, Soft Rock occupied the airwaves throughout most of the seventies and eventually manifested into synthesized adult contemporary music. Soft Rock's influence can still be seen in today's Pop music culture through such artists as Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion, Sade.

The third, and probably the most diverse, deviation of good old Rock and Roll music is the unmistakable sounds of Punk Rock. Punk Rock was greatly influenced by the aforementioned Hard Rock style; however, it reverted back to the basics. The core of Punk Rock music consisted of three cords played on the guitar and very straightforward melodies; consequently, this made it considerably louder, faster, and much more coarse than any Rock and Roll band of the past. This has also been attributed to most punk band's inability to play instruments. Bands like The Clash and the Sex Pistols from the U.K. may have popularized Punk Rock, but the true origin of the music lies in the hands of the Ramones from the United States, or more specifically, New York City (Schild, 1).Following in the Ramone's footsteps were bands like Black Flag, the Dead Kennedys, and Minor Threat that not only conveyed a message through their music but also directed Punk Rock to a more melodic tone. Laying way to such modern day bands as Face-to-Face, At the Drive-in, and Green Day.Write my Essay on Rock is Dead

In brief, Rock and Roll, or at least some form of, is definitely here to stay, and these three sub-genres should prove that Rock and Roll is flexible and diverse enough to withstand the test of time. In addition, Rock and Roll possesses a footloose, rebellious history that will accompany American music into the new Millennium because it's not only the music but also the ideology of Rock and Roll that lives on. An ideology that Mick Jagger tried to explain when he said, "I know, it's only Rock and Roll, but I like it."

"I feel therefore I exist."A famous phrase uttered from Rousseau's lips which shocked the respectable art world. The highly developed concept that reflected the progress of the art radicalists destroying a highly famous statement made by Descartes and giving birth to a new way to think. This was one of the seeds planted that grew the child of modernism. A new generation that exploited and artificially imposed itself into the history of art.

The act of destroying and rebuilding bigger and better ideas are the very words that make progress work.We today live and thrive in progress. The guilty pleasures of making everything easy and just with in our reach are the very result of modernism. It is found in every aspect of our life.Progress makes modernization which makes up the very essence of modernity. (Harvey, 5-)

Modernism was born during 180 right before World War One and gaining its strength towards the 10's. 'Modern' art was a small group of art movements cumulating de Stijl, Dada, Constructivism, Impressionism, Post Impressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Each movement was a voice obsessing on the injustice of the world around them. These progressions in the art world at the time were shocking and new. Yet, the question I have in mind is why are these people doing moving away from realism? (Harvey, 1-10)

They were all working on art work that were beyond the realism that people were used to.Everyone of these groups were developing ways in which they could get work against this prejudice that the art world had with their style of work mainly because it did not reflect realistic techniques. These works that were being produced were passionate and evoking. The art itself vibrated with emotion and thrived on the reaction of its audience.A very interesting artist named Jackson Pollock created his own art movement that bordered on performance art and a child's work of art. It was called drip painting.Controversy and excitement for this kind of art was electrifying because no had ever seen this kind of work done before.DuChamp shocked the art world with his Ready Made art.He placed many ready made objects like his famous 'urinal' in an exhibit in the early twentieth century. Yet, Van Gogh still confuses and brings his audience into an emotional state when they glimpse his masterpiece 'Starry Night.' It is a manipulative piece that has color and line jumping from the canvas vibrating and aluminous to his audience's eyes. The art world was in a state of shock. They must answer to this new art dizzy and new.

Cheap University Papers on Progress and Modernism

This very question of what in the heck is art now? What is art when in so many ways as soon as a new form of art is born there is another new art to be criticized and studied. The answer came when the term Modernism was created. It was what all these artists were trying to do break from the traditional old styles and techniques of painting and progress into a new way of evoking the eye. Who cares about the old ways of doing things get rid of it and create new ways of making art? (Harvey, 0)

The Modern Art Movement is documented as a fake movement because they reject their art history past. They denounce their predecessors and reject being part of anything from the past. They have ridden themselves of this history that rejected them.

They, in my opinion only exist because there was a past to disagree with. Thus, in order to keep their progress into Modern Art real they must object to their art history. The hypocrites that call their art fake and exclaim that Modern Art isn't real because it is what the artist thinks art should be with out theory or any education behind their declaration. That is the progress of what art has worked so hard to move towards. These developments in making their work respected but not necessarily understood. I believe there will always be this need to find something to criticize and evoke reactions from people and artists are the 'avant garde' of progressing towards the new.

The link between Modernism and Progress is that with out the other it will not exist. Modernism is created when there is progress in art to find ways of making it better and more interesting. Progression only exists when there is a need for better and easier things. All these people from Picasso to DuChamp and many more have developed and refined their ideas of what art means to them into a whole movement we know as the Modern Art Movement.

The first scheme of universal training came into operation on the 1st of January 111. The Minister for Defense presented a comprehensive report on the progress of the scheme for the period between 111 and to June 11. Annual statistics for the number of registrations, medical examinations and exemptions under the universal training scheme are included in the Official Year Book of the Commonwealth. The scheme had a monumental rate of success. The junior cadets were abolished in June 1, and universal military training and the holding of military camps were suspended from the 1st of November 1, pending a general review of defense policy. Prime Minister Alfred Deakin introduced a bill providing for universal training to Parliament in 10. It was a measure with broad parliamentary support, having been adopted by the Opposition Labor Party at its 108 conference. At the invitation of Deakin, Field Marshal Viscount Kitchener of Great Britain visited Australia in 10 to inspect the existing state of defense preparedness of the young Commonwealth, and advise on the best means of providing Australia with a land defense. Kitcheners report, submitted in February 110 recommended the introduction of compulsory military training. Australian troops fighting overseas in World War I enlisted voluntarily. As the enormity of Australian casualties on the Western Front became known in Australia and no quick end to the war seemed likely the number of men volunteering fell steadily. There was sustained British pressure on the Australian Government to ensure that its divisions were not depleted in 116 it was argued that Australia needed to provide reinforcements of 5 500 men per month to maintain its forces overseas at operational level. With advertising campaigns not achieving recruiting targets, Prime Minister Hughes decided to ask the people in a referendum if they would agree to a proposal requiring men undergoing compulsory training to serve overseas. On 0 October 1, a decade after the Scullin government abolished universal military training, and some six weeks after Australia had entered World War II, Prime Minister Robert Menzies issued a press statement announcing the reintroduction of compulsory military training with effect from 1 January 140. The arrangements required unmarried men turning 1 in the call up period to undertake three months training with the militia. In a statement to Parliament on 15 November Menzies noted that the War Cabinet had determined that the militia forces needed to be kept at an adequately trained strength of not less than 75 000 men. On 5 November 164 Cabinet decided to introduce a compulsory selective National Service scheme. In announcing this decision to Parliament, Prime Minister Robert Menzies, referred to 'aggressive Communism, developments in Asia such as 'recent Indonesian policies and actions and a 'deterioration in our strategic position as being influential in the decision being reached. The Government had concluded that Australia had inadequate defense manpower and aimed to increase the strength of the Army to000 by the end of 166 by introducing national service. The National Service Act 164, passed on 4 November, required 0-year-old males to serve in the Army for a period of twenty-four months of continuous service (reduced to eighteen months in 171) followed by three years in the Reserve. The Defense Act was amended in May 165 to provide that conscripts could be obliged to serve overseas, and in March 166 Prime Minister Holt announced that National Servicemen would be sent to Vietnam to fight in units of the Australian Regular Army. Between 165 and December 17 over 800 000 men registered for National Service. Some 6 000 were conscripted and over 1 000 served in Vietnam. Although registration was compulsory, a process of selection by ballot determined who would be called up. Two ballots were conducted each year. The ballots selected several dates in the selected period and all males with corresponding birthdays were called up for national service. The though of Military training for young men between 18 and , came into effect after the events of September 11,001. Now there is a Bill up for consideration that has 16 cosponsors, and is doing fairly well. Although the Bill is having success it is minimal, and does not look as if it will pass, due to the military strength we have, and the beliefs of the people of the United States of America.

Finding Yourself

Developing an identity, finding one's self and growing into an individual is generally regarded as one of the most important aspects to have as one self. We often speak of one's "personal identity" as what makes the person. Your identity makes you unique as an individual and different from others. "Silent Dancing" by Judith Cofer, "Looking for a Lost Dog" by Henry David Thoreau and "You Can Shave the Beast, but the Fur Will Grow Back" by Michael Cohen all have a significance of identity roles.

In Cofer's essay, "Silent Dancing" she writes about a girl's life in the United States as a Puerto Rican. She explains the discrimination against them, a discrimination associated with racial prejudice. She lived in El Building, a building that houses many foreigners, which made life hard for her.She had her family would not get involved with the Americans, partly because of their race, and partly because her father wished so. The only place outside of her family's misery is located in the blocks around their street. Cofer's hope is that one day things will change, and maybe one day she could win some respect for herself and her culture. She is full of hope. "If you were to stretch that rubbery face, you could find my father's face and deep within that face- my own (16)." By this she means when you "stretch that rubbery face", in other words, when you reveal what is behind the face, you can see Cofer's father, and within that face you can see Cofer's. When Cofer talks about that "rubbery face" I think she is referring to her uncle. She does not want to live the same life as her uncle and her father. She does not want to experience what they did. She does not want to live in poverty and struggle in Puerto Rico, nor does she want to live discriminated against in the United States. I feel Cofer hopes for change and wants the struggle to end. The significance of finding her identity is important to her.

In Cohen's essay, "You Can Shave the Beast, but the Fur Will Grow Back" he writes about a man who grew up in Brooklyn, New York City that faced hatred and racism at an early age. There is a saying about New Yorkers. Cohen writes in his essay, "New Yorkers are stereotypically known as crass and rude group, devoid of compassion (86)."Here he is saying that New Yorkers have a reputation of being rude and self involved. When you experience the city most people think it's fast paced which is very true. There rudeness comes in when you people run over you because they are in a hurry. They all have somewhere to very important to be and they just don't have time for you. And if you get in there way they will let you know it just like the hurried man that Cohen accidentally bumped into whom offered an apology to him but the man sped off mumblingwords, "fuck you" (0). He never understood the hatred and the name calling until he grew up. He never wanted or meant to be that hated person. But it was that one day driving in the car that he yelled out "bastard spic or muthfuckin nigga" (87). He suggests that it became natural to him. Cohen found his identity as a New Yorker by experiencing life in Brooklyn. He is a true New Yorker.

In Thoreau's essay, "Looking for a lost dog" is a story about a man who looks for his lost dog but finds something else. That something else is himself. The story starts out describing the dog and how it was lost but then drifts off when he puts his ear to the ground to hear his dog whining. "Human beings are so narcissistic because of the wayour ears are constructed, we can only hear what's right next to us or else the internal monologue inside (0)."Here he is saying that humans are very self involved and we only hear what we want to hear. Then he goes back to looking for his lost dog and tries to find trails or clues to the where about of his dog. Then he goes from looking for his dog to walking in nature and finding oneself. The search for the dog becomes scarce. He does end up searching for something.I think he searches for who he is. And why he is asking so many questions that pertain to humans and nature.

In conclusion identity plays an important role in life. When our decisions are no longer associated with what we look like, how we act, or who we know, we will find that our identity truly depends on whats inside. Its easier to be satisfied with life when you know what you want. When you know yourself, it doesnt matter what anyone else thinks. Your appearance will matter less to you when you look at the big picture.

Religion makes a big impact on a person's life.Religion shapes a person's lifestyle and personality.Nathaniel Hawthorne criticizes religious institutions and people's attitudes towards religions in "Young Goodman Brown".The story "Young Goodman Brown" is about a man who loses his faith when he finds out the evils in the world. Hawthorne criticizes institutional religion because of its corruption. Hawthorne believes that people have misinterpreted religion and have forgotten the true meaning of religion, which is to have love, hope, and faith.

"Young Goodman Brown" criticizes people's views on religion and the institutional aspect of religion. The story takes place in Salem.Salem is populated by hypocrites who cover up horrible crimes with respectability. The story has allegorical characters, such as Goody Cloyse who represents religion. She teaches the Bible to young children.Goodman Brown has respect for her as well as the whole town.As Goodman Brown makes his way to the forest, he sees the horrors that are within. The people that he respected such as the minister, Deacon Gookin, and Goody Cloyse are all there in the forest worshiping evil."The minister and good old Deacon Gookin seized his arms and led him to the blazing rock.Thither came slender form of a veiled female, led between Goody Cloyse, that pious teacher of the catechism, and Martha Carrier, who had received the devil's promise to be queen of hell" (4).Goodman is in shock that evil does exist in the world. When he sees all the people that he had respect for in the forest, he is shocked to see them there.Goodman Brown is a very naïve person. He never knew that there was evil in the world until he was tempted by an old man to find the truth. The next morning Brown comes to town to see that all the people are going on with their lives as if nothing happened.Brown points out "Goody Cloyse, that excellent old Christian, stood in the early sunshine at her own lattice, catechizing a little girl who had brought her a pint of morning's milk" (5).The townspeople are living a second secret life, the life of sins, crimes, and worshipping evil. The townspeople view religion as some sort of redemption for their sins. They pray on Sundays and commit sins the rest of the week. That explains why the institutional religion is corrupt. Many believe that Young Goodman Brown was dreaming the whole experience in the forest up. Whether or not Brown was dreaming, he takes this experience to heart. He isolates himself and becomes cynical and distrustful. The whole story is symbolic of a terribly religious journey. His reaction to the townspeople at the end of the story is warranted. He had all his faith and love for the townspeople and his religion. When Brown saw the townspeople that thought him religion in the forest, the truth crushed his soul. This could simply be seen as a religious awaking for Brown. The religion he respected and the people who thought him the religion turned out to be corrupted. The Deacon Gookin who is supposed to be a man, who puts people on the right path of humanity, is actually baptizing people into their cult."Evil is the nature of mankind.Evil must be your only happiness" (5).The townspeople use religion and innocence to cover up their crimes that include burning a village down. These people have somewhere along the line forgotten that religion is about love, hope, and faith. With that in mind, Hawthorne's use of symbolism plays a big part in the story.Young Goodman Brown represents the common innocent and naïve person who loses his faith when he sees the true face of the world.Hawthorne criticizes Brown's blind love for his religion and for the townspeople.Hawthorne shows the aftermath of following a religion blindly that it led Brown dying sad and lonely.

Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" criticizes religious institutions and on people's attitudes towards religion."Young Goodman Brown" exposes how people commit crimes and use religion as a shield for protection. The townspeople cover their horrible crimes such as worshipping evil with respectability, teaching the Bible to young children and going to church.Hawthorne also criticizes Brown's character for his blind love for his religion and for the townspeople.

Western Expansion

The western frontier was a newly acquired asset with unlimited potential for the United States. Rich with mineral resources, fertile land, and overall open space, the frontier was to be prosperous indefinitely, but it was first necessary to determine which action would be initiated. Agriculture was the only true necessity for survival, and with the land, large farms could be created to produce food for the nation. For this reason, farmers and their agricultural agenda should have had the precedence in setting up the western frontier.

During the time period between 1840-180, immigrants were crowding into our nation, causing a population boom, especially in urban areas. Our nation was growing, industry was improving, and transportation, especially through railroads, was progressing rapidly. Following the Civil War, many settlers, including immigrants and freedmen, were moving west to begin new life farming. But, the United States was wastefully granting the railroad companies fertile lands, which were more suitable for agriculture.

With the arrival of thousands of immigrants each year into the United States, food was obviously a necessity for the nation. With all the land for which to cultivate in the west, farming was a sensible way to begin setting up the frontier. The government should have allowed farmers to choose their land on which to farm, and then support the nation with a steady food supply. The government could have still given out free land, like they did, as long as the farmers would supply the nation with a partial amount of their crops. In this way, if the farmers were allowed to choose their land first, the production of food would have been more efficient and prosperous, and the nation would have gained more profit.

With the profit gained from such a prosperous agricultural region, the government could have then funded other areas of westward expansion, such as railroad construction.Once the boundaries were created and farms were stable, the railroads could have then been built through the less fertile lands, such as the deserts in the Southwest. This method would have been logical, and in this way it would have also been easy to transport the goods to the East for consumption. The railroads would run around and between the farms, instead of the farms being created around a railroad. With a railroad built around the already established farmlands, the nation would have experienced more profit.

By allowing farmers the initial opportunity to set up the frontier, it would have given more people a chance to establish a new lifestyle. In the South, the freedmen had their freedom, but had nothing to do with it. Many moved north to work in factories, and some stayed in the South and farmed, but allowing them to begin our agricultural integration of the west would have been the most constructive way of giving them work.If freedmen were given land in the west, they could have started a successful life farming while providing our country with the supplies they needed. Some form of an act or agreement would have done this idea justice, and granted the freedmen land in the west, as long as they cultivated it. This method would have solved an economic as well as a social dilemma in the nation.

Some may believe that other methods should have been enacted in setting up the western frontier, but by further examination they appear inferior to agriculture.Mining did not inhabit the same areas as farming, so essentially it could have been initiated before it, but it would not have provided the nation with the food that was needed. Ranching and allowing cattle to roam free across the fertile lands would have been wasting the resources and, overall, prosperous harvesting. Allowing the Native Americans to spread themselves out across the expansive land also would be a waste, because of the potential for minerals and farming that the Natives did not have the technology to take advantage of. Ultimately, farming was the best way to begin to settle the western frontier.

The western frontier had the potential to become something beneficial and prosperous to the United States. If managed more carefully and logically, the west could have produced even more that it did during that time period. By giving railroads the initial opportunity, the U.S. failed to take advantage of the raw power it had, in the form of the West. Farmers and their agricultural agenda should have had the precedence in setting up the western frontier

Compare and Contrast Nora and Antigone

Custom writing service can write essays on Nara Antigone

"A Doll's House" and "Antigone" were plays from two different eras.Despite the fact that Sophocles' play was written in ancient Greece and Ibsen created his masterpiece in 1th century Norway, both plays are meant to convey similar ideas . The main characters of both plays (Nora and Antigone) battle the surrounding them society in order for their individual rights to be recognized. Both Antigone and Nora step into the spotlight as a female hero who has been put in a compromising situation and is forced to decide whether it is more important to follow what society dictates, or go with what they feel is moral and just. Both characters are desperately trying to brake the chains that are holding them by defying higher authority.

My first point of comparison of these characters is their position in society at the beginning of the play. Antigone in Sophocles' play is a member of a ruling family of Thebes - a city-state in Ancient Greece. She is the member of the ruling class.Money obviously do not play a significant role in her life. Her time is preoccupied withrelationship with her family. She is a woman in a society predominantly controlled by the voice of men. She does not have a word in deciding the outcomes of major decisions.

On other hand, Nora is a housewife and a wife of a banker in Norway. She is a mother to three kids, and her everyday responsibilities include taking care of the kids and keeping the house cozy and warm. Like Antigone, Nora is a woman in society that is dominated by man. She does not have a word in major financial decisions of their family. Her voice is not heard and it can't be heard because Helmer manipulative behavior suppresses every desire to state her own opinion. She is not treated like a woman, but as a puppet with multiple strings attached to her.

The second issue is the family values of each of the characters. I personally think that for Antigone family is more of the way to organize a ruling group of people.Family for her is a group where power and authority of the leader is not questioned. And she realizes that she is nothing but a link in the chain, that there is no room for her personal emotions and opinions. Family is obviously important for Antigone. Sheopposes Creon in order for the dead body of her brother to be buried properly.

Nora, however, being the most important thing in her life considers taking care of the people she is tied to , make her family be loved , keep them safe, and protect her kids and her husband. As you may notice, however, there is no natural bond that formed between Nora and her kids. Her kids are always with the nanny.

So she sees her kids as a nominal representation of their actual existence.

Both characters are willing to sacrifice themselves in order to protect theirfamilies. Nora forgoes the crime of forgery to save her husband and secretly work afterwards to pay off the loan. Antigone goes against the ruler of Thebes, risking her lifein order for the body of Polyneices to be buried.

Third aspect is motives that are driving both characters to conflict.Antigone is faced with the death of both brothers, one who is to be buried with full military rites , while the other, under dictate of the king, is to be cast aside and allowed to rot in the sun. She places family before the law, and ventures out to give her brother a proper burial.

In A Doll's House, Nora too must decide where the line between right and wrong is drawn. In order to save her husband's life , Nora forges her father's name on a promissory note. Both women thus break the law using similar justifications.Antigone does so under the premise that the Gods said that all men deservea proper burial. Nora commits her crime with the belief that since it is saving a life of her loved one, her situation is an exception to the rules.

The last point of comparison are the goals of both characters. For Antigone they are obvious to properly bury her brother. She is a single voice to oppose tyrannyand bring out the fact that the decisions of Creon contradict with the rules set by God.

Nora wants to live the life she always wanted. She wants to act and to be treated like a real woman. She does not want o be a dollin a fake relationship where she does not have a word.

Though both plays were written during different time frames , both have a lot in common . By defying authority above them, both characters set the stage for modern individualism and are the roots of feminism.Ibsen

Refutation of the Myth Theory

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most debated historical event the world will ever see. For those who believe in the resurrection, their hope and happiness is encapsulated within the testimonies of the Bible. For those who reject it, their hope and happiness exists by disproving the evidence of the believers. The fact is simpledisproving the resurrection means disproving Christianity.

It is therefore no wonder why the believers are playing defence as rash and blazon minds try to shut down the key to Christianity. The four main theories set down to disprove the resurrection are the swoon theory, hallucination theory, myth theory, and the conspiracy theory.Using the analogy of an archer and his bows, it is up to bold and resolute Christians to counter the piercing claims the non-believers fire attempting to hit the bulls-eyethe core of Christianity.

The most intriguing of the non-believers theories is the myth theory. It accounts as a post-modernist correlation of the hallucination and conspiracy theory, and is the accepted 'standard line of liberal theology.'

Custom writing service can write essays on Refutation of the Myth Theory

I decided to choose the refutation of the myth theory for the content and evidence argued is the most factual and objective of all the theories. Also, it is the most interesting and explores a wider base than the other theories.

The first argument against the myth theory is that the Gospel is 'clearly different from the style of all myths.' Christians are using the fact that everything in the bible is interconnected, with no exaggerated events. Also, the amount of detail and in some cases irrelevant (but concise) facts, suggests the laconic style of the Bible defers from the standard verbose style of myth. But the most deafening fact is merely the awareness that the Bible was set in the real Palestine, and all details are realistic.

Linking to the first argument, the second argument revolves around the fact that there was not enough time for a myth to develop. The believers argue from a stance that printed mythological material about Christ would be disputed by eyewitnesses. Julius Muller summarises this argument by saying

"One cannot imagine how such a series of legends could arise in an historical age, obtain universal respect, and supplant the historical recollection of the true character [Jesus]…if eyewitnesses were still at hand who could be questioned respecting the truth of the recorded marvels."

After the second argument, I believe the following three arguments comparatively lack the evidence presented in the first two arguments. The third argument is based around the fact that the myth theory comparatively lacks evidence. However, asking any historian, they will tell you that the amount of evidence doesn't matter, but what the evidence is. Therefore, the third theory is merely displacent.

The fourth theory revolves around a 'little detail' that the social status of women bound their ability to give factual evidence. It states that the first witnesses of the resurrection where women. The fact that these statements were believed, and not disregarded as crude data, therefore implies the authenticity of the events. This argumentative base is extremely circumstantial and too far-fetched to be believed.

Similarly, the fifth argument lacks a factual base. The argument is held together by a phrase inPeter 116, which denies the mythic interpretation. It says that once the 'New Testament distinguishes myth from fact, it becomes a lie if the resurrection is not fact.' The argumentative base for this theory lies within the evidence of the hallucination and conspiracy theory, and once again, is to far-fetched to be believed.

The final case presented in refutation of the myth theory, is that the Gospels are authentic and hold a high degree of integrity. Using an outline from Knowing the Truth About the Resurrection by Craig, the believers prove the authenticity of the disciples writing and the integrity of the 'Word of God' as well.

What I have drawn from analysing the refutation of the myth theory is that it is extremely objective, excluding arguments three, four and five. The main arguments presented are sound and backed with reliable historical evidence, and refute the myth theory. However, the inclusion of lacking arguments brings down the overall reliability of the refutation, for those arguments are too circumstantial.

Niccolo Machiavelli

Niccolo Machiavelli was born on May , 146 in Florence, Italy. Not much is known of his childhood, but he did receive a good amount of education and he enjoyed studying many great writers including Aristotle, Heroditus, and Virgil. In 14, Savonarola came into power in Florence, and for a while Machiavelli was a hard-core follower and believer of Savonarola. Machiavelli, was cosidered a political genius by many people. Although, many people dont like him because they believe he supportedrunning a corrupt government. The reason for this is a short book he wrote called The Prince. The genius political woks of Niccolo Machiavelli were overshadowed by the reputation that was given to him because of his views in The Prince. Machiavelli became interested in politics at a fairly young age. Machiavelli soon got a job with the government as a secretary, but worked his way up fast when they realized how smart he was. In 148 Savonarola was executed and Machiavelli gained a position as the head of the second chancery. He met many important politicians, such as the Pope and the King of France, but none had more impact on him than a prince of the Papal States, Cesare Borgia. Borgia was a cruel man and corrupt leader, very much like one of the main characters in The Prince. Machiavelli did not truly like Borgias policies, but he thought that a ruler like Borgia, could unite Italy, which was Machiavellis goal throughout his life. He believed it was the most important thing even if rules or morals had to be broken. The Prince had to be both loved and feared. Unfortunately, he was dismissed from office in 151 when the Medici took rule of Florence. The lack of a job forced him to switch to writing about politics instead of being active.

Machiavelli wrote The Prince soon after losing his job. Some people believe he wrote it to impress Medici, who took over and get his job back. Unfortunately, Medici wasnt impressed and didnt agree with what the book said. Then when the public saw the book, they were outraged. The Prince had very extreme views and quotes that shocked many people. The people wondered howa man could think evil thoughts like the ones in The Prince, and this would come back to haunt him. Here are a few quotes found in The Prince

We have not seen great things done in our time except by those who have been considered mean, the rest have failed.

You must know there are two ways of contesting, the one by the law, the other by force; the first method is proper to men, the second to beasts, but because the first is frequently not sufficient, it is necessary to have recourse to the second. Therefore it is necessary for a prince to understand how to avail himself of the beast and the man.

Machiavelli eventually teamed up with some other people to develop a plan to overthrow Medici. When the plan was discovered he was banished from the city. However, if the people wanted to know what Machiavelli really stood for, they should have read his Discourses on Livy, which explain his full political philosophies and is viewed as his best work. But The Prince continues to define Machiavelli to the general public. A few years later the Medici were kicked out of Florence. The republic was re-established, and Machiavelli waable to retake the office he had already left years ago. But, the reputation that The Prince had established made people think his philosophies were like Medicis, and he was never elected prince. This is when the sharp downhill of his life began. His health began to fail him, and he died months later, in 157.

Machiavelli had been unfairly attacked all of his life because of a bad reputation. His book did have many extreme views but it seems to me like he wrote his books completely truthfully without hiding anything. I don't think he was any more crooked than any other politicians, he just wasnt afraid to admit it and tell the public his honest opinions and philosophies. His reputation only grew worse after he died. He was continually blasted for his support of corrupt ruling. In fact, the term Machiavellian now means corrupt government. I think people have just recently started to appreciate Machiavellis books and realize how smart he actually was.

And therefore, your men of imagination are generally given to sensual pleasure, because the objects of sense yield them a more delicate touch, and a livelier sensation, than they do others. But if they happen to live so long (which is hardly possible), in the decline of life they pay dearly for the youthful days of their vanity. Those rigid, stiff and unyielding fibres, have less warm sensations, because it requires a greater resistance. Those excel most in the labours of the understanding, or the intellectual faculties, retain their impressions longest, and pursue the farthest; and are most susceptible of the slow and lasting passions, which secretly consume them as chronic diseases do. And lastly, those whose organs of sensation are (if I may speak so) unelastic, or entirely callous, resty for want of exercise, or any way obstructed, or naturally ill-formed, as they have scarce any passions at all, or any lively sensations, and are incapable of lasting impressions; so they enjoy the firmest heath, and are subject to the fewest diseases such are ideots, peasants, and mechanics, and those we call indolent people.

Cheynes description of natural variation in feeling is interesting for several reasons. The limited catalogue of sensation he provides only allows for three physical types of feeling the sensitive, the cool, and the dead. The first two types point towards different types of intellectual the poet and the philosopher. In this case, sensibility becomes tied to ones capacity for thought; the ability to feel indicates the sort of work one might produce. The picture of the super-sensitive artist reminds one of, among others, Richardson the hypochondriac, and Sterne the consumptive. One also thinks of Beltons death in Clarissa; the libertine on his death bed, paying dearly in physical and spiritual torment for the youthful days of his vanity. Then there is the philosopher on slow boil, going mad at the same rate at which he approaches complex scientific and moral problems. Finally, Cheyne shifts out of the artistic and intellectual to discuss feeling in totally classist terms; the ruddy vitality of the mechanic is compromised by his total inability to feel. It is, I think, noteworthy how smoothly Cheyne connects the terms ideot and peasant.

Memoirs of a Geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha is Arthur Goldens debut novel, written exquisitely with great detail. It was initially written as a novel that would depict the son borne of a geisha and a Japanese businessman, but once he had learned the true nature of a geisha, he changed his topic. Golden discovered the intrigue of the geisha - the attributes that draw in the geishas customers, that make them an irreplaceable part of Japanese history, that make them human as well as the ideal of what a woman should be. When these features were displayed through Sayuris voice, the novel became an emotionally enrapturing story, which drew in the reader and captivated the heart. I, personally, was affected deeply by this novel. I have always been drawn in by Japanese culture, even as a child. When I learned of the geisha for the first time, I thought I even wanted to be one someday. While reading this novel, any fantasies I may have had of what a geisha was were completely reshaped. This novel convinced me that the geisha truly were artists - they were trained and hired as musicians, dancers, conversationalists, jokesters, and drinking buddies, so to speak. The geisha incorporate both the demure and the vulgar aspects of the human spirit, and created instead a playful and desirable companion for the stressed and lonely businessmen.

When I learned of the mizuage, the supposed Japanese term for the occasion upon which a young geishas virginity is auctioned off to the highest bidder, I was quite shocked, considering the Japanese culture is one that had prided itself for hundreds of years on being one of the most civilized, and yet permitted young girls to first be sold into the as-depicted near-slavery of the geisha trade, and then to have their virginity sold. I learned to see these events from Sayuris point of view. She saw life as being like a stream, with events that are beyond our control, but in which we can paddle and make the best of the twists and turns. Sayuri saw that if she had never been sold into the geisha profession, she would never have formed the meaningful friendships she had over the years. She would never have learned the amazing skills that a geisha possesses. Most of all, however, she would never have met the love of her life, the Chairman. While she missed the simplicity and purity of her childhood life in a poor fishing village on the sea, she realized the beauty and incredible richness of the life she had lived in the Gion district of Kyoto. She also discovered this same wonder in her new American life in the bustling city of New York. This affected me deeply, mainly because it offered the softer voice of a Japanese woman to the many I have heard in my lifetime that claim that life is what one makes of it. It was written believably, as well. If Sayuris difficult life was made into one of amazing beauty and charm, then one can imagine what can become of the typical life of a teenager in America.Order Custom Memoirs of a Geisha paper

Another aspect of the novel that truly opened my eyes was the idea that a Southern-raised American man could write a novel (relatively) convincingly from the position of a 10s-born Japanese geisha. The character of Sayuri, based from studies of geisha and a particular woman of the name of Mineko Iwasaki - one of Gions most renowned geisha of the 160s and 70s - lived through a difficult profession that is now, in the modernized world, slowly dying out. With only a few thousand geisha left in all of Japan, as opposed to the flourishing numbers of the past, the profession is something often seen as an aspect of ancient Japan, and nothing more. This novel seemed to be an incredible feat of crossing both gender and cultural barriers in order to depict a novel of amazing humanity and grace. Not only did this have an emotional impact, but it also opened my eyes to new styles of writing. While the writing was simple, it crossed the same barriers that were emotionally crossed throughout the novel.

Memoirs of a Geisha fully outlines the possibility for people to truly understand one another despite whatever boundaries. Whether they be due to gender, age, culture, politics, or any other reason, these boundaries can be overcome by simply learning about one another, about, and trying to understand one another as people rather than as objects. Memoirs of a Geisha defied many boundaries and was able to create an intimate - and greatly appreciated relationship between the reader and a fictional geisha from, essentially, another world. It truly is an incredible novel.

1.The author is showing that in the doctrine that President George Bush handed down there are flaws. These flaws may allow the most powerful nation or realm to impose their will as they see fit.

.According to the Bush doctrine, a rogue state is a regime that brutalizes its own people, seeks to acquire weapons of mass destruction and expresses hatred of the US.

. A pre-emptive strike is justified by the Bush administration as a legitimate form of self-defense. In the tradition of international law, a pre-emptive strike can be used when enemy forces are massing or when a "visible" threat appears. As the enemy forces of terrorism are invisible and may strike without warning, the concept of a pre-emptive strike needs to be adapted to the current world conditions. The Bush doctrine claims that the US has the right to mount a pre-emptive strike even if uncertainty remains as to the time and place of the enemy's attack.

4.When the author writes about the partial mischaracterization of the likely behavior of the enemy he states that the doctrine is half right. If terrorist networks were ever to become equipped with weapons of mass destruction, it is almost obvious they would use these weapons against the civil population of the US. However while the doctrine assumes that there are anti-US countries that are stockpiling weapons of mass destruction, and that the leaders of these 'rogue states' are insane madmen ready to launch attacks on the US, there is no hard evidence to support this.

Buy cheap Bush Doctrine term paper

5. Under international law evidence of a visible threat or enemy forces massing would allow a pre-emptive strike to come under the banner of self-defense. Conversely under the Bush doctrine a pre-emptive strike may take place even when an attack on the US is not imminent. A strike such as this may be considered an aggressive move or a pre-emptive war. This is how the line between self-defense and aggression has become hopelessly blurred.

6. The conceptual hole that Manne identifies is whether the US as a world leader has the right to strike against whomever they see as a threat, without a mandate from the United Nations. If this is so does this right exist for other countries or does the Bush doctrine point to a world led by the US. If other countries do have this right will it lead to a world where the powerful impose their will on the weak?

7.The Bush doctrine may seem that it protects the world from the imminent threat of terrorism but it really only protects the US. There are many reasons why this doctrine paves the way for a US led world where the US and perhaps its allies are supported by the weaker or smaller realms.

The doctrine assumes that if an anti-US country such as Iraq was to stockpile weapons of mass destruction, that they would use these weapons in an attack on the US. It does not take into account that these weapons may be used in defend Iraq's own rights from another attacking country.

The doctrine is also hypocritical in that although the US and its major allies are allowed to build weapons capable of mass destruction, smaller countries that may oppose a threat to the US are watched with caution if they train their armed forces. If these armed forces get too big or threatening this may allow the US to strike against these countries as they pose a ' visible' threat to their interests. The doctrine takes away the right for countries other than the US or its partners, to defend their country.

The US has used the doctrine to write its own laws and decide who has broken them. It has relieved the United Nations of its powers and allows the US alone to decide who it strikes and why it strikes. This type of power is dangerous as it permits the US to alter the truth, if they need to, to suit their circumstances.

The major problem with the doctrine is that it points to a world where the US decide who is right and who is wrong. It will allow the US to dictate which countries can build weapons and which countries will be destroyed for doing so. Countries can be attacked if the US wants something that they have under the façade of a pre-emptive strike. Countries, which have valuable world resources such as oil and natural gas, and are not aligned with the US, may find themselves the target of what may be considered an unjust war. Even allies of the United States may find themselves under threat if they suddenly become too big for the US to handle.

The Bush doctrine is a reasonable response to a dangerous world if you are an American. If this is not the case being aligned with the US may be the only solution.

convinced that the most striking character is Marco. He is an Italian

immigrant that moved illegally to the United States with his brother

Rodolpho to work as longshoremen, since at the time (the play was

written in 155) his country of origin, Italy, was going through a

major economic depression because of the outcome of World War II. In

the play, we are told that Marcos plan is to make enough money to

survive and be able to send some of that money to his wife and his

three kids back in Italy, who are starving. Marco physically resembles

the Sicilian stereotype, with dark skin and dark hair. He is also very

strong and he could easily load the whole ship by himself.(pg.541)

In this play, the author uses plot, dialog, actions and symbolism to

emphasize Marcos honor which, in my opinion, is his prominent

characteristic.

Throughout the play, we can clearly see that the plot helps us

develop Marcos character in our imagination. For example, he is an

illegal alien, and this might give the reader a less honorable view of

him, and it might justify Eddies action. But the fact that Marco left

his family to give them support and to save his oldest son who is

sick in the chest, (pg. 55) makes the reader forget about his

illegal stay and makes his status rise to the one of a hero.

In this play, Marcos actions lead us to the discovery of a

violent side which he uses to defend his honor in a number of

occasions. For example, when he challenges Eddie to lift the chair at

the end of the first act, we understand that he did it to save his

brothers face and his familys honor. In addition, the killing of

Eddie by Marcos own hands at the end of the play, is the final

display of his character. Marcos character is definitely expressed

more by his actions than by his words. He is very strong, and he is

obviously aware of that, but doesnt like to show it in words, or brag

about it. In fact, when Eddie was making fun of his brother Rodolpho,

instead of replying to him in words, he chose to use his strenght to

get his point across by lifting the chair. In addition, Marco doesnt

talk about his family much; instead, he works as hard as he can, and

that is enough to show everybody how much he cares about them. As a

final insult to Eddie, Marco chooses to spit in his face in front of

everybody. This is because in the Italian culture, that act is

considered as an extreme expression of anger toward a person, and it

is rarely left without punishment. In addition, the action of going to

the church before facing Eddie shows us that he is very religious and

cares about his soul.

Marco is a very honorable man and believes in his tradition, and

the author shows us that through a number of symbols. For example,

spitting on Eddies face once he realizes that Eddie turned him and

his brother to the police is a symbol of disgust and revolt for

Eddies actions. In addition, at the end of the play, we are told that

Marco went to church before going to talk to Eddie. This action tells

us that Marco is ready to give up his life and commit a mortal sin to

defend his honor, because what Eddie has done, the breaking of the

omerta, the breaking of trust, is something that in his culture

must never be left unpunished.

Throughout the first act of the play, Marco is only referred as a

flat character and the only time we are really aware his persona

and his strength is at the end of the first act, when he lifts a chair

over his head and makes it seem like a challenge to Eddie, as a

response for mocking Rodolpho. But only in the second act his

character is fully exposed and we see his image transform into a

round character. In this play, Marco is portrayed as the victim, since

he hasnt done anything to Eddie but he still gets arrested. In

addition, although his brother Rodolpho gets away with it by marrying

Catherine, he has no other choice but to go back to his hungry wife

and sick children in Italy. This thoughts, and knowing that Eddie has

no regrets for what he has done makes him furious, and at the end of

the play he seeks revenge.

I belive this play would not be complete without this character.

If Marco would have not existed, it would have left Eddie unpunished

and alive, and this would be in conflict with the very conception of

drama which drives this works.

Racism. It's the big issue. But just how long has this form discrimination been going on for?Why has it plagued our society?Who is responsible for the continuation of acceptance of racism? All these questions, and more are answered as Patryck Allen writes about racism, and how it is still stronger than ever throughout the world today.

Racism has been around as long as man has walked the earth.Does this mean it is right?Should man have learnt to 'deal with it' over time?I think not.

Racism has become a part of day-today life for most people in the world today, whether it be committing the brutal act ourselves, or being the innocent victim that doesn't understand why the human race can be so mean.

Buy cheap Racism Is Revolting term paper

After all, what can you expect when one of the 'all time greatest' writers, Shakespeare used racism in one of his 'greatest' works?

In Shakespeare's 'Othello', he has used very harsh, racist dialogue to convey to his audiences that the other characters look down on Othello for being black. Is this fair?

Examples of this harsh word choice can be found in the metaphor in Act 1, sc. i. Line 85, where Iago says to Brabantio "an old black ram / is tupping your white ewe".

This is not a very nice way for Iago to talk about his general, is it?In fact, it is a revolting and racist way to talk about his general.

Shakespeare has usedthe word 'tupping' to make this act of love sound inhumane and disgusting. He refers to them as animals… "black ram", "white ewe".These all infer that it is unacceptable for a white women to love a black man.

The result of this racist gesture by Iago was not as large back in Shakespearian times as it has become today. After all, the people of the sixteenth century saw racism as an accepted part of day-to-day life.

And again, in Act I, sc. i. line 1, Shakespeare has crafted another racist quote into the dialogue, this time through Roderigo, he sais "To the gross clasps of a lascivious moor".

This example of emotive word choice makes Othello out to be asex-crazed object that is out to get what he wants. This is not the case.It is simply a racist comment that puts Othello down.

The words 'gross' and 'lascivious' carry with them connotations of dirtiness, vulgar, and again, inhumane being. This is no way to treat anyone, is it?

But, Shakespeare is not the only person to use racism in his work.Just look at the cartoon from 'Der Sturmer' in 15.

The illustrator of this cartoon has made a distinct effort to portray Jews as gross and inhumane people.

Many graphic techniques have been used to tell the reader that Jews are bad.But why are Jews bad?Is it because of their race? That is hardly fair, is it?

Examples of these graphic techniques include the axe in the background. The axe symbolises death imagery.Couldn't the axe have been replaced with a happy, smiley bunny rabbit?

This is a great example of how a composer's biased view of a certain race can influence the way their readers think.

The most obvious technique in the cartoon is the death imagery of the rat in the mincer. What sort of a mean ogre would put a live rat in a mincer?A Jew?

Another way the illustrator has portrayed racism in the cartoon is the body language of both the Jew's.

They are both slumped, look unhappy, and some might say that it looks like the man is enjoying his power over the poor, defenceless rat.Only a racist mind could come up with ideas like these.

There is no place in this world for such revolting racism.

The act of committing racism is not only found in plays and cartoons, but also in children's stories.Racism is not an appropriate thing for children to read about.

In "The Jewish Doctor and the little girl", the author has used many techniques, among metaphors and personification to tell the small children that Jews are evil and inhumane.

The sentence "His face is the face of a devil" symbolises hell imagery and is also a metaphor describing how revolting the Jew is meant to be.Would you trust someone with the face of a devil?

The author used the line "A grin that says I've got you at last, little German girl!".This is good use of personification, because a grin can't talk, and this line would be very effective to its intended target audiencechildren.

This is a very biased view that the author is telling the children, and who knows? They might grow up believing that this is the right opinion…

So, ultimately, as one human race, we need to work together to see the end of racism, and make it clear to the world that racism is revolting!

Every single one of you in this room, at some point in your life have been jealous of another human being.

So what exactly is jealousy?

What does it mean to you?

Do you think it is a vice or a virtue?

Jealousy in fact can be both a vice and a virtue, believe it or not…

Jealousy is an emotion experienced by one who perceives the love, attention or affection that is being given to a rd party, when it should rightfully…in their mind be given to them.

For example, a jealous lover may dislike their partner spending time with members of the opposite sex, because they feel they are rightfully the sole recipient of their partner's attention and although this sounds quite selfish, it is perfectly natural to feel this way.

Jealousy is taken to be synonymous with envy. It is defined to be a mourning which one entertains, at another's well being due to a view that ones excellence is in consequence lessened.

Its distinctive malice comes from the opposition it implies to the supreme virtue of charity.

Jealousy comprises a form of the deadly sin envy, but implies a feeling of personal claim and the presence of a rd party which is not present in envy.

The word jealous stems from the French jalousie, formed from jaloux, further from low Latin zelosus (full of zeal), and also from the Greek word ardour zeal meaning to boil or ferment. Originally a condition of zealous emulation.

Jealousy is a combination of emotional reactions, including fear, anger, and anxiety. Studies have shown that men and women tend to feel jealous for different reasons; for instance, physical attractiveness in a perceived rival is more likely to incite jealousy in a woman than in a man.

Everyone occasionally experiences normal jealousy… caring about anyone or anything means that one will become uncomfortable and anxious at the prospect of losing the desired person or object to another.

My Best Friends Wedding is a classic example of how jealousy can effect and destroy a perfect relationship.

Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney cast as Jules and Micheal. Two best friends who slowly drift apart. Michael ONeal and Julianne Potter were romantically involved in college, and after breaking up, they managed to remain close friends.

For years, Julianne and Michael have had a pledge that if both were single when they turned 8, they would get married. Shortly before her 8th birthday, Julianne is mourning the sad state of her love life when she gets a call from Michael, who announces that he has very important news to tell her.

Julianne is convinced that Michael is going to ask her to marry him, and she is crestfallen when he announces that hes engaged to Kimmy Wallace played by Cameron Diaz.

Kimmy seems like the perfect woman for Michael, shes sweet, pretty, bright, and adores Michael, and her wealthy family is just as fond of him as she is.

But now that Julianne has realized how much she loves Michael, shes not about to give him up without a fight and isnt afraid to fight dirty.

Juliannes uneasy ally in the battle for Michaels affections is her friend and editor George Downes played by Rupert Everett a cheerfully out-of-the-closet homosexual who is not prepared when Julianne asks him to pose as her boyfriend.

Now 4 days before Micheal and Kimmy' s wedding, Jules must come up with a plan to sabotage the wedding, and convince Micheal that she is the one for him, not Kimmy.

The part of the movie I am going to how you is where Jules confesses to Micheal all the moronic things she has done to try and split him and Kimmy up.

On the synopsis sheet I handed out at the start of the tutorial there are six Quotes, statements and pieces which all have a strong connection with the topic of jealousy.

Do any of you disagree with any of these quotes?

Why do you believe it/they are inaccurate?

Jealousy can be both a vice and a virtue, these limitations change only when the severity of the emotion is tampered with.

Jealousy is not just a single emotion but instead a whole array of feelings bundled together. It is not wrong or immoral to feel this emotion, after all we are only human.

Jealousy is only a vice when feelings become actions, and when actions go too far.

So be like the Matador if you wish, but remember jealousy does not compensate when it comes to succeeding in life.

Order your pygmalion paper at affordable prices !Love is not the main subject of Pygmalion; however, it does play a small, but significant role, in this play. There are many different types of love discussed, in this play, as well as other types of relationships. Eros love, philia love, love of yourself, and respect are the main types of relationships going to be discussed. Although love has such a behind- the scenes role, it is nonetheless important.

The relationship between Henry Higgins and Colonel Pickering is quite friendly. It is obvious that they have some type of friendship, some type of connection; right from the day they first introduced themselves to one another. "THE GENTLEMAN. Of course I can. I am myself a student of Indian dialects; and- THE NOTETAKER. Are you? Do you know Colonel Pickering, the author of Spoken Sancrit? THE GENTLEMAN. I am colonel Pickering, who are you? THE NOTETAKER. Henry Higgins, author of Higgin's Universal Alphabet. PICKERING. I came from India to meet you. HIGGINS. I was going to meet you." (Act1, pg8) They automatically were able to start a friendship. Although this was not emphasized, it was evident in their interactions with one another.

The relationship between Colonel Pickering and Eliza Doolittle was, also, that of friendship. This was evident in their speech to one another as well as their actions. Their relationship was that of respect. "LIZA. I know… I am not blaming him. It is his way. Isnt it? But it made such a difference to me that you didn't do it.You see, really and truly, apart from the things anyone can pick up (the dressing and the proper way of speaking, and so on), the difference between a lady and a flower girl is not how she behaves, but how she's treated.I shall always be a flower girl to professor Higgins, because he always treats me as a flower girl, and always will; but I know I can be a lady to you because you treat me like a lady and you always will." (Act 5, pg. 1)

The relationship between Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins is not at all the same.Henry Higgins does not treat Eliza with respect and has not intentions of doing so.Behind all the lack of respect, there is a friendship. It is obvious that Higgins cares for the girl, he just has not way to show it properly."HIGGINS. I can do without anybody.I have my own soul my own spark ofdivine fire. But I shall miss you, Eliza.I have learnt something from your idiotic notionsI confess that humbly and gratefully. And I have grown accustomed to your voice and appearance I like them, rather."(Act 5, pg. 17) Although Eliza detects that Henry indeed does like her, Higgins fails to show it properly. Because of this, Eliza has to demand respect from him."LIZA. I want a little kindness.I know I'm a common ignorant girl, and you a book-learned gentleman; but I'm not dirt under your feet. What I done what I did was not for the dresses and the taxis; I did it because we were pleasant together and I come-came-to care for younot to want you to make love to me, and not forgetting the difference between us, but more friendly like." (Act 5, pg. 10)This relationship is probably the most emphasized throughout the play. It is that of a poor ignorant girl and an intellectual man coming together to form a bond, a rather twisted bond.Their Philia love (friendship) is evident and yet Higgins can never seem to admit to it.Every time he would get even close to expressing his love, he would say some nasty, rude comment to get around sharing his true feelings.Higgins did not seem to know how to express his love, he was so bitter.

Write my Essay on pygmalion for me

Henry Higgins, however, seemed to have a strong love for himself, Eliza, on the other hand, seemed to struggle with that because of how she was treated.Towards the end of the play, Eliza developed a spine. She finally stood up for herself and she even found love in Freddy.Eliza always had a strong will, she just seemed to lack self-respect.

On the whole, it would seem as though love played a rather significant role in this play.It is not the main subject, but it is emphasized rather much.Love is given a behind-the-scenes role. This is probably due to the fact that love was not expressed, in this play, as an important thing (at least, not in words). The characters did not often express their love for each other, rather they kept it inside.

Shaw is not saying that love is unimportant (or all-important for that matter). It is as though he lets you decide for yourself, rather.Love is what you make of it.You can both read between the lines and find love in actions and other words that hint at love and friendship; or you can look at love as Higgins does, as something you can live without (as unimportant).
