Order your Tuesdays with Morrie paper at affordable prices !The book Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom is a real page turner. Tuesdays With Morrie was written as a true story in 17. The book is about a professor who is dying and a student. They both met back at Brandeis University College in Waltham, mass. While attending Brandeis Mitch Albom, the student, became friends with Morrie Schwatz, the professor. Through the years after graduation Mitch and Morrie drifted apart. Morrie became ill with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS in turn unites the old friends. At this point we are introduced to the creation of the title of the book. Mitch visits Morrie every Tuesday to talk about thirteen different topics of Mitch's choice. During these visits we are shown the several stages of death Morrie experienced. The Book ends with the death and funeral of Morrie Schwartz.

In my opinion the author Mitch Albom did a great job in writing this book. I could not put the book down and at points I had to force myself to stop reading. Mitch was so descriptive in his writings that it was like being in the same room Mitch and Morrie. When Mitch and Morrie were in discussion of the thirteen topics it would make me stop and think how I had handled or how I would handle those items. Three of my favorite lessons the two friends spoke about were on marriage, death, and money.

When marriage is talked about it is on their tenth Tuesday in which Mitch brings his wife, Janine. Mitch was in search of why society has problems with marriage. Society has problems either getting in or out of marriage. Morrie used to be a counselor for couples before becoming a professor at Brandeis. Morrie believed in finding a loving relationship between two people. This loving relationship would fill the holes in one person that the world could not. What stood out on this Tuesday was a saying by Morrie, "Love each other or perish." He also spoke of respect, compromise, common values, and open communication all being a part of a healthy relationship.

Help with essay on Tuesdays with Morrie

Death was the topic of discussion on the fourth Tuesday. Morrie began the discussion with the statement "Everyone knows they are going to die, but nobody believes it." They discussed what different religions believed of death and how the different religions handled it. There is so much repetition in or lives that when the end comes up it changes everything. That change is death and no one specific person knows how to handle it so we all ignore it. Morrie explains to Mitch his look on life now and from before he became ill. Morrie now noticed much more all of the smaller things in life. This session ended with the overall lesson, "Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live."

The eighth Tuesday was when the two discussed money. Morrie believed in simplicity and the fact we out our values into the wrong things. We have all heard the saying "You can't take it with you when you die," but as discussed society is brainwashed to believe money is power. Throughout the discussion Morrie reinforced his simplicity theory of life. The moral of this was to "devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning."

After reading this book twice I found myself analyzing my life so far, I thought I was doing a great job and new the answers to everything. Now I realize I must love life in its entirety not in small pieces. I need to slow down and absorb more on a day to day basis than remaining in a never ending cycle. I have already found myself telling people around me about certain aspects of the book. But, I think I would recommend reading the book to everyone especially the people that I am close to. Reading Tuesdays With Morrie I hope would touch everyone who read reads it as it has touched me.

Order your Hudson Bay Struggles Today paper at affordable prices with Live Paper Help!Today Hudson Bay Company is at an uphill battle in Canada's Department store war. Although Hudson Bay may be the oldest it is no longer fit to dominate the market like it used to. Hudson Bay has dated back to 1670 with fur trading company then branched out. Three centuries HBC (Hudson Bay Company) is Canada's largest department store retailer. Today HBC operated underbanners The Bay, Zellers, and Home Outfitters. 00 the revenue of HBC for that year was the same as the year before. Net earnings dropped from 15. million to 7.8 million. This was a slow year for clothing sales for The Bay and seeing how Clothing sales account got 70% of revenue this was a dramatic change. The Bay is losing its share in the market to competitors. The Bay is trying to improve its operating efficiency. The Bay has made significant investment in technology. To implement a common computer platform, a common HBC rewards and credit card was implemented to encourage cross-banner shopping. In001, The Bay had tried to give a new image by the new slogan "shopping is good" none of these really made a substantial change to the company.

The real problem that The Bay faces today is shrinking market shares. The Bay and Zellers faces incredible pressure from Sears & Wal-Mart. Sears has opened 7 new Eaton stores through the last years and Wal-Mart continues to expand rapidly along with big-box stores like Business Depot and Future Shop.

A recent move was The Bay striking an arrangement with Federated Department Stores Inc. to have exclusive rights to clothing and house wear brand previously available only at upscale United State retailers.

Although the dramatic changes The Bay has made, people still see The Bay as "Bland looking" and uninspiring retail environment.HBC currently operated 100 Bay stores,Zellers, andHome Outfitters. A goal for 00 for HBC was to open as many as 17 new stores in Canada. HBC feels that Home outfitters has a very promising future. Home Outfitters the type of store that is fueling growth in retail sales.

The Bay competes for shares in this market with Sears and as for Zellers it competes with the famous Wal-Mart.Wal-Mart's "low-price policy" makes them unstoppable. Wal-mart has the dominant position in the discount segment that was once controlled by Zellers. Wal-Mart's strategy is low-priced goods attracting customers, as for Zellers the strategy is to become the preferred store of Canadian moms. Zellers attempts to compete with Wal-mart.Zellers has invested in expanding and upgrading more than half of itslocations. Those stores will have brighter and wider aisles, popular brands like Truly and Cherokee, Adding a indoor and outdoor furniture, electronics, pet supply, and foods section to all of their selected stores. Zellers wants to go head-to-head with Wal-Mart. Zellers adopting the "everyday low prices strategy" where merchandise has a low sticker price all year round.Kmart had once tackled Wal-Mart and had ended up in bankruptcy. Today many Zellers customers are now Wal-mart loyalists, this making it very costly to change Zeller's image.

I remember days where my mother and I would go shopping at the once famous Zellers offering great prices and great selection, now a day my mother suggests to go to Wal-Mart instead. Convincing me that it cheaper and that he guarantee the price they have, this giving her the assurance that this was the safest way to purchase and know that the hard earned money was not being cheated from her in some way. I am sure that that is one reason that every mother faces today. Zellers need to let customers know the low price policy and convince them for a second try.

fghsdfghsdgfsdfsdfThe WTO stands for the World Trade Organization, its purpose is to make sure that trade between nations flows smoothly, freely, fairly and predictably. The WTO has more than 140 members, accounting for over 7% of world trade. The WTO's top level decision making body is the Ministerial Conference which meets at least once every two years.

One of the goals of the WTO is to help producers of goods and services, importers, and exporters conduct their business. They are the only global international organization dealing with the global rules of trade between nations. The WTO was created on 1 January 15 marked the biggest reform of international trade since after the Second World War. This organization started in 15 it is one of the youngest international organizations. They tried to make ITO (international Trade Organization) in 148 but they failed. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) established around the time of the World Warright after that.

It took seven and a half years, almost twice the original schedule. By the end, 15 countries were taking part and it covered almost all trade. It was the largest trade negotiation ever, and the largest negotiation of any kind in history. At times they thought it was going to fail. But in the end, the Uruguay Round brought about the biggest reform of the world's trading system since GATT was created at the end of the Second World War. Despite its troubled progress, the Uruguay Round did see some early results. Within only two years, participants had agreed on a package of cuts in import duties on tropical products which are mainly exported by developing countries. They had also revised the rules for settling disputes, with some measures implemented on the spot. The seeds of the Uruguay Round were sown in November 18 at a ministerial meeting of GATT members in Geneva. Although the ministers intended to launch a major new negotiation, the conference stalled on the issue of agriculture and was widely regarded as a failure.

In Multilateral trading system also known as the heart of the WTO are agreements, negotiated and signed by large majority of the world's trading nations. The agreements are the legal ground rules for international commerce. An international agreement, a document setting out the rules for conducting international trade. A number of simple, fundamental principles run throughout all the WTO agreements. They are the foundation of the multilateral trading system. They include non-discrimination ("most-favored-nation" treatment and "national" treatment), free trade, predictable policies, encouraging competition, and extra provisions for less developed countries. The agreements are negotiated and signed by most of the world trading nations and ratified in their parliaments. The WTO agreements are long and complex because they are legal texts covering alot of activities. They deal with agriculture, textiles and clothing, banking, telecommunications, government purchases, industrial standards, food sanitation regulations, intellectual property, and lots more.Buy wto term paper

They guarantee member countries important trading rights, like contracts. Rich and poor countries alike have equal right to challenge each other in the WTO's dispute settlement procedures. They also make governments keep their policies within agreed limits to all the nations benefits. The goal is to improve the welfare of the peoples of the members countries. The system helps promote peace and providing countries with a constructive and fair outlet with dealing with disputes over trade issues. There could be a down side to trade liberalization and expansion. More trade means more possibilities for fights to arise. Those fights could lead to serious conflict. But in reality, a lot of international trade tension is reduced because countries can turn to the WTO to settle their trade disputes.

The WTO is the GATT but is a lot more stuff. GATT, the international agency, no longer exists and has been switched to the World Trade Organization.

My talk is on whether private schools more beneficial than public schools? Megan and I have both interviewed and handed out surveys to get our info, and we'll show you some peoples opinions later.

The debate on whether to send children to a public or a private school as been an issue for many parents over some time.

And the most beneficial school has not been decided yet. Both schools have something good about them. And in the end it's just up to the parent to decide what they think is best.

This is a very important decisionmake as children in general will spend 5-6 years of their life there, and what school you choose may determine what future they have in the work place.Help with essay on Issue

In basic terms the main difference between a public and private school is who owns the school, not who works or teaches there but who actually owns it.

All aspiring teachers go to the same collage, there isn't a collage for people who want to teach at a private or a public school it's all the same. The only difference is who the schools hire.

So the students will all be receiving the same education, teaching skills, and workload as any other school no matter where they go.

Many people are fooled in to believing that because private schools fees are higher or because they have laptops that they are better but I don't believe this is the case.

Although I do believe that there are some aspects, which are better or worse at different schools. But these mainly refer to the students' attitudes towards the school.

Some of these that have come through in my research are... that private schools tend to have a stronger discipline system. And the rules and consequences tend to be much harsher.

Whereas public schools have a rather different approach. Some people believe that public schools are rough or violent. But in my 1years of being at a public school I'm yet to see a bad fight in the school grounds.

You don't see them, and if you do they are harmless and I'm not just being naive. Maybe it's just the schools I have been to but I've never seen or even heard of one. And if you do, they are very rare.

But the fact is, that you'll find rough or violent kids in whatever school you choose. Whether it's private or public.

The facilities in schools are also now very even. In fact our school has some of the best facilities in the state. And competes and even over takes some private schools.

The motivation level is pretty much up to the student, if they want to achieve in school, they will. It won't alter just because they are at a private school. You can't force someone to enjoy or succeed in school.

In fact the grades and enter scores are basically even when it comes to finishing school and wanting to get into a collage or uni. So why spend thousands of dollars if you don't need to?

Many people believe that the street sense that you get at public schools is great. And that it improves your sense of survival and your competitive side, which is needed in the work place.

A strong believer of this is Mr Paterson when I asked him what his views on public and private schools were he said……………

I agree with Pato on this.

Megan and I interview about 50 people over the past week and many people had very different views on the subject.

These were the opinions of some of the people in year 11 and 1 that we interviewed.

…………..

….………

……….

……………

……………….

Shae and Michael are two people who I talked to, and who I used a lot to base things on. The reason for this was because they have both changed from a private to a public school.

Shae has moved from chiro and Michael has moved from St Paul's. I asked them both a few questions on their reasons and whether they are happy with the move and this is what they came up with….

CONCLUTION- after mine and megans research on private and public schools we concluded that there is no real right or wrong school to go to. It just depended on what the specific parent thought was important or what they want for

World War II was a horrific war. Many countries were

Involved in the war. Many thousands of people were brutally

tortured and, killed during the war.

Adolph Hitler was a dictator of Germany. He was

Cheap Custom Essays on Sea God

demanding land from other countries and this is one thing that

started the war. In September 1 Germany invaded Poland.

Hitler was quoted as saying, "I will leave no one alive to

triumph over Germany." In 141 Germany attacked Russia.

Germany made attacks against other countries. The countries

causing trouble was the Axis Powers. They wanted to rule the

world. They were Italy, Germany, and Japan. The U.S. was not

involved in the war just yet.

Hitler hated other races of people, especially the Jewish

people. He thought they were inferior to his race.Adolph

Hitler was personally responsible for killing six million Jews

during this time. This became known as the Holocaust.

Some died of starvation, and others were led to areas that

looked like showers, and they were gassed to death. The

dead bodies were burned, and some were lined up and shot to

death. He showed no mercy to any of them. He would have

killed men, women, children, and babies.

The United States entered the war with heavy artillery,

aircraft, and ships. Later would also come a devastating bomb.

On December 7th141, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. They used

airplanes to bomb the U.S. Air base in the Philippine Islands of

Hawaii. The U.S. had remained neutral up until this time, but

we declared war on Japan after this attack. The Japanese used

kamikaze planes in this battle. This is when a pilot would use

his airplane to crash into U.S. ships. He would be killed, but

think it was an honor to die for his country.

U.S. had spectacular uniforms and helmets. One type of

helmet is the m117 model. It had a communicator in it.

Another helmet is the camouflage helmet. It makes you seem

invisible to your enemy. Soldiers ate out of the steel pot helmet.

Regular soldiers wore khaki pants and shirts. Lieutenants wore

tropical coats. Guards and commanders wore wool service coats

in the winter.

One of the hardest battles fought was inIwo Jima .

It lasted eighty-two days. Harry S. Truman was the U.S.

president at that time. He gave Japan a choice to either

surrender or have a bomb dropped on them. Another battle was

the battle of Midway. This battle and the battle of Coral Sea

were fought in the ocean, not on land. They had aircraft carriers

that airplanes could land and take off from. The Allies gained

victories in these two battles. The U.S. code crackers cracked

Japan's Naval codes, so the Allies new Japan's every move.

The U.S. had spent some years working on the atomic

bomb. Albert Einstein helped lead in the research of the bomb

by discovering the process of nuclear fission. He feared the

bomb, but was willing to help the U.S. because of Hitler's

threats to Europe. The atomic bomb was tested in the desert in

New Mexico in the United States. When the bomb went off, it

shattered windows 15 miles away.

On August 6, 145 a U.S. B- bomber dropped the

atomic bomb on a Japanese city called Hiroshima. The name of

the bomber was nick named "Enola Gay". The next day the city

of Nagasaki was also bombed. At Hiroshimathe bomb

exploded 000 feet over the city. The city was evaporated in an

instant. About 100,000 people died that day. People that didn't

die instantly, grew sick and died later from the poisonous gas.

When the bomber flew away that dropped the bomb, they saw a

mushroom shaped cloud over the city.

This devastated the country of Japan, and they

surrendered.On September , 145 Japan signedsurrender

papers.

The dictator of Germany, Hitler, could not accept defeat

or surrender. Russia was coming from one side and the other

Allies were coming from the other side to ambush him. He

committed suicide by putting a pistol to his mouth. His wife

also killed her self. This was the end of World War II.

Why an MBA?

University of Phoenix Online

Abstract

Custom Essays on Why an MBA?

Key reasons for obtaining an MBA degree are explored.

Why an MBA?

Your boss is screaming.Your spouse is squawking.Your kids are screeching. And amid the din of everyday life, you sit and considerWhy an MBA?

Realistically, your life is full.Free time?Balancing the demands of your work life and your home life has left you with precious few minutes for leisure time activities.Yet still, you press on.Once just an idea that you batted around in your head occasionally on the ride home from work, the MBA degree is now within your sights. Once you have set a goal, you are quite determined to see it through. But, why? What is so important about earning an MBA degree?

For those whose careers have slowed down to a crawl or come to an apparent standstill, the MBA degree is seen as a way to get it back on the fast track. The MBA, they reason, will give them a competitive edge over their non-MBA degreed brethren when promotion time rolls around. Some experts such as Paul Danos, Dean at Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College, agree.According to Danos,

An MBA education is probably the most powerful career transformation available for 5-5 year olds. For those fortunate enough to attend a great MBA program, the rewards in terms of career options, salary, and ability to lead in business are enormous.(1)

However, the "Earning the MBA as a Career Booster" theory has its detractors, too.Andrew MacDonald, Head of APESMA Management Education, Australia, professes, "An MBA does not guarantee you career success, because it does not guarantee that you can perform. It may give you the potential to perform, but it says no more about you than that." (1)MacDonald further expounds that, "While many in the MBA market choose to ignore it, where a management career is concerned, experience and performance are the key ingredients and formal qualifications are icing on the cake."()

According to both of the experts sited above, it seems that the MBA degree can indeed be important part of career development. They only differ on the level of its importance. If the theories of both experts above are taken into consideration, then the pursuit of an MBA should occur only after sufficient work experience has been achieved in order to maximize its benefits.

Another reason one may choose to pursue an MBA, is to "fill in the gaps" in their education and experience which would help them to become a more well rounded manager. For example, one whose undergraduate studies focused on Management may chose an MBA in Finance to achieve a fuller breadth of knowledge.Shivpal Kulhari, a programming consultant at Verizon Communications, got his undergraduate degree in Information Systems, but has plans to pursue an MBA in Finance. When asked why he chose to focus his MBA studies on Finance, Shivpal replied, "My background is mostly technical and Finance is a very vital skill for business administration and that is my weak point. I feel an MBA will be the best way to get a good understanding of it."Shivpal's reasoning is that having degrees in both Information Systems and Finance would make him a more attractive candidate to prospective employers, and leave him better suited to achieve his goal of being a part of top management in a multi-national company.

So, then what's so important about an MBA?According to the experts and to those working in the trenches, an MBA is a valuable tool to be used to enhance a manager's career and help lift it to the next echelon.Achieved in conjunction with work experience and high-level performance, the MBA degree can help to jumpstart a stalled career. Why an MBA, you ask?The question should be, "why not"?

The smell of saltwater and dust fill my nostrils.I stare, along with two other officers, into the dark eyes of both Captain Vere and Billy Budd within the Captain's quarters. The Indomitable, the vessel upon which we ride, tosses and turns atop the waves of the agitated ocean's surface.A distant crash and a groan from the boat, its strength wages war with the sea.Billy is on trial for the murder of Claggart, the master-of-arms of the ship, and for conspiring to begin a mutiny on the ship. The stunned and dumbstruck look on Billy's face gives him an aura of innocence, and I cannot help but feel sympathy for him.Yet I truly doubt his innocence.Captain Vere states that Claggart presented allegations of Billy's leadership in an attempted insurrection on the ship, but knows full well that Claggart lied.It is hard to see any motive behind Claggart's accusations if they were not true, so the perception of the situation seems almost certainly in favor of the late Claggart's claims. The immense sorrow of Captain Vere penetrates my soul; all know how much he admires Baby Budd.Despite the Captain's opinion on Claggart, I have trouble believing the oh-so-perfect Billy Budd's side of the story. He states that Claggart had come to him one evening and told him of the mutiny against the captain, and encouraged him to join, and he fled the conspirator.I find this unlikely, yet the situation is to be investigated.

The main question at hand, despite how Baby Budd had killed Claggart in a single blow, is why Claggart would accuse him of attempting to start a mutiny upon the Indomitable. There seems to be no clear motive behind his "actions".Claggart never

showed that he disliked Billy in any way that I can think of. He seemed to always be kind and maybe even over enthusiastic with his pleasant actions towards Budd. However, I do remember one instance overhearing Dansker, an elderly member of the crew, explaining to Budd that this was Claggart's way of showing his disdain towards him, and warned Billy to keep a watchful eye on the sneak. Now that I recollect, I do recall a few occurrences that caused me to suspect Claggart as envious toward Budd.He would always look at him strangely, and then his face would turn to anger.I am starting to see that there may have been an unknown and suspicious side of Claggart. He was small, dark, pallid, cunning, intelligent and yet disliked by the crew; Budd on the other hand may not have been the sharpest tool on the deck, but he was still admired and loved by all.Jealousy may have been the main contributor to Claggart's motive. The pieces are starting to fall into place.Had Claggart put on an act in order to assure his plan to destroy the life of Billy Budd?It is beginning to seem as though the answer is in fact yes.

Everthing seems to come together now.Billy Budd was everything Claggart wanted but could not attain; Claggart hated him for this. When at first his initial distaste toward Budd went unnoticed by the 'loved one',Claggart moved on to new measures in order to atone for his jealousy. He wished to condemn Baby Budd for being what he himself could not.Claggart's actions seem to reveal a truth about the human psyche. When a person wants something or wishes to be accepted, they strive for it in the only ways familiar to them. However, when they cannot attain their goals, they muster hatred and contempt towards those who have what they want. Some may even go as far as to destroy that person's life out of their envy.Because Claggart could not be accepted and loved like Billy Budd, he conspired to ruin Budd's life by framing him as the conspirator behind a mutiny on the Indomitable.I understand completely! However, I fear it will be nearly impossible for me to convince the other two officers of my new discoveries.I'm afraid the fate of Billy Budd was decided when he hit Claggart with that fatal blow. The power of jealousy is a great evil indeed.Order custom research paper on The Power of Jealousy

Washing your car

Ever since I was young I can remember looking through car magazines at old classic cars

like mustangs, camaros, chevelles, impalas, and other old classic cars, my father also showed

my interest in old vehicles as well he owns a 178 Ford f-100 pickup that he had bought

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on washing your car

back in 180 it is not a real old classic car but it does has its cool looks. He taught me very

much about working on it and how to keep it looking its best, he taught me the basics of how

to properly wash the outside of the car and how to polish and vaccume the inside of the car. I

have already owned an old classic car and learned how to keep it looking its best. in this

paper I am going to give you some helpfull information on how to keep your car looking its

best in keeping it clean.

You are going to need the following equipment to be able to wash your car Of

coarse you will need your car you wish to wash, some soap preferably a car wash solution

something that is clear coat safe or even a dishwater soap like dawn works very well. you

will need a garden hose that will be long enough to reach all the way around your car and It

would also be nice to have an adjustable water sprayer to adjust your water patern to a

small steady stream of water. you will need a wash sponge to get the mud and road grime off

of the car the bone shaped sponges work very well for a good grip and to scrub off dirt. You

will need a good bucket for mixing your soap into, I myself prefer a five gallon bucket it is a

more essential bucket than any other bucket, You will then need a drying shamy to dry off

the excess water off of the vehicle when you are done. You also need a vacume cleaner with

the hose attachments and you will need some polishing solution like armor all and some

terry cloth towels. after you have gotten all of your cleaning supplies you are ready tobegin

washing your car.

You will start by pre-rinsing your car, the way you do this is by taking your garden

hose and rinse the entire car with water getting all of the car wet and wetting all of the dirt

and mud and what not. After you have rinsed off your car you then need to fill your bucket

up with water and soap add about two tablespoons with soap and pour it into the bucket and

then fill the bucket full of water, you then take your sponge and start washing from the

bottom of the car to the top of your car washing in small circular patterns. then you will take

the garden hose and rinse off the excess soap off of your car. your next step is to start

washing your wheels with the sponge be sure to work into the small corners getting all of the

brake dust off of the wheels. After you have washed your wheels you need to rinse off your

wheels. You can now start drying off your car with the drying shammy working from the top

of your car to the bottom of your car making sure that all of the water off of your car and

removing all of the water spots. This will conclude the part of washing the outside of your

car. You now need to start emptying out your trash looking under the seats and behind the

seats. You can now start vacumming out the carpet and the seats going In up and down

motions. After you have done this you can now start polishing your dash stearing wheel and

the door panels. After you are done polishing you can now start spraying some fragrance

spray to make your car smelling fresh and great.

After you have renewed your cars new look now you can look back and admire your

work, the best thing you can do to keep your car looking great longer is to to take some car

wax and aplying a generous amount and working it in small circular patterns. This is the

way my father taught me when I bought my first car I have used this method for many years

and it has helped keep my car looking sharp and I hope that if others read this paper that it

helps them out for washing their cars.

Order your how is serena joy represented in the novel paper at affordable prices with !Serena Joy, the Commanders Wife, is the most powerful female presence in Offreds daily life in Gilead, and as Offred has plenty of opportunity to observe her at close quarters she appears in the narrative as more than just a member of a class in the hierarchy of Gileadean women. As an elderly childless woman she has to agree to the grotesque system of polygamy practised in Gilead and to shelter a Handmaid in her home, but it is plain that she resents this arrangement keenly as a violation of her marriage, and a continual reminder of her own crippled condition and fading feminine charms. The irony of the situation is made clear when Offred remembers Serena Joys past history, first as a child singing star on a gospel television show, and later as a media personality speaking up for ultra-conservative domestic policies and the sanctity of the home. Now, as Offred maliciously remarks, Serena is trapped in the very ideology on which she had based her popularity She stays in her home, but it doesnt seem to agree with her (Chapter 8).

Serenas present life is a parody of the Virtuous Woman her only place of power is her own living room, she is estranged from her husband, jealous of her Handmaid, and has nothing to do except knit scarves for soldiers and gossip with her cronies or listen to her young voice on the gramophone. The only space for Serenas self-expression is her garden, and even that she cannot tend without the help of her husbands chauffeur. If flowers are important to Offred, so are they too to Serena, and she often sits alone in her subversive garden, knitting or smoking.

To see the world from Serenas perspective is to shift the emphasis of Offreds narrative, for these two women might be seen not as opposites but as doubles. They both want a child, and the attention of them both focuses on the Commander of whom Serena is very possessive As for my husband, she said, hes just that. My husband. I want that to be perfectly clear. Till death do us part. Its final (Chapter ).

Offred seldom knows what Serena is thinking, though there are indications of her attitudes and tastes in the jewels and the perfume she wears and in the furnishings of her house hard lust for quality, soft sentimental cravings as Offred uncharitably puts it (Chapter 14). There is also evidence of a certain toughness in Serenas cigarette-smoking and her use of slang, not to mention her suggestion that Offred, unknown to the Commander, should sleep with Nick in order to conceive the child she is supposed to produce Shes actually smiling, coquettishly even; theres a hint of her former small-screen mannequins allure, flickering over her face like momentary static (Chapter 1). But Serena has her revenges too she has deliberately withheld from Offred the news of her lost daughter and her photograph which Offred has been longing for.

By a curious twist, Serena occupies the role of the wife in a very conventional plot about marital infidelity, as well as in the privileged Gileadean sense. She is one of the points in the triangular relationship which develops between Offred and the Commander The fact is that Im his mistress ... Sometimes I think she knows (Chapter 6). Actually, she does not know until she finds the purple costume and the lipstick on her cloak. It is a clich6-like situation, but Serenas own pain of loss goes beyond this conventional pattern ... Behind my back, she says. You could have left me something. Offred wonders, Does she love him, after all? (Chapter 45).

Serena is still there in her house, standing anxiously beside the Commander at the end as Offred is led out through the door. Her farewell to Offred is wifely in an old-fashioned sense which has none of the pieties of Gilead ... Bitch, she says. After all he did for you (Chapter 46).

I've owned many different automobiles during my lifetime.I'm somehow caught-up in the faddish notion of driving the latest models. My first car was an 88' Chevy Cavalier. It was silver with a fine red stripe down the side.I thought it was the coolest ride on the highway.I was sixteen and had my own wheels.I had that car for almost two years before my father totaled it in an accident with a deer.I think being young with a like-new automobile stirred something inside of me; it made me want to drive some of the finer things in life.Of all the vehicles that have been titled in my name, my Honda Civic, my Ford Explorer, and my Mazda 66 are the three automobiles I enjoyed the most.

The first brand new car I'd ever owned was a Honda Civic. It was a beauty to drive. The small compact frame provided the adequate amount of space needed to transport my newborn daughter and myself.I became intoxicated on the new smell that invaded my nostrils each time I would open the door.Although it wasn't equipped with all the finer luxuries, such as power steering, power windows, and power locks, just to name a few, it was still a stylish vehicle in my eyes.My Honda was a five-speed, providing me with a gearshift topped with a round, smooth knob to grip.Since it was only a four cylinder, I was able to get excellent gas mileage. The most attractive quality about my Civic was the affordable monthly payments.Being a single mom living on a tight budget made driving this adorable car a pleasurable experience. As my family began to grow, so did the need for a larger vehicle. That need encouraged me to buy a Ford Explorer.I was drawn to the Explorer for many reasons.Because we had acquired a dog, the rear cargo area provided spacious room to allow him to travel comfortably. My daughter had grown and I was pregnant with my second child. The Explorer made it easier to load and unload the kids without putting a strain on my back. And since there was a luggage rack attached to the roof, the worry of limited packing was eliminated. There were also many luxuries that attracted me to my Explorerpower windows, power steering, and power locks. The one thing I liked most about my Explorer was the comfort level it provided.Being able to stretch my legs, without having to stand, saved a tremendous amount of time while traveling.

For our second anniversary, my husband gave me a Mazda 66.This car was all mine.A lot of care went into selecting this car.My 66 was purchased with sixteen inch alloy rims that sparkled like a diamond in the sun.The twinkling reflection turned heads on every corner I turned.Since a CD player was already installed in the dash, I was able to save money on having to purchase one and pay a tech to install it.On a sunny day, I could be found cruising down the highway with my sparkling rims, my CD player pumped up, echoing out the sweetest melodies, and with my sunroof open.My sunroof was the most awesome feature on my car.It gave my car a convertible feel without the hassle of dropping the top,

Keeping up with the latest models of vehicles hasn't been an easy task.As a matter of fact, it's been rather expensive, trading in one automobile for another, instead of completing a payoff. However, the feeling I get just moments after the new purchase is worth the trade-in.I'm reminded of the moment I closed on my first and only home.Being able to pay a mortgage instead of paying rent was the best investment I had ever made. The experience of parking my Civic, my Explorer, and my Mazda in the driveway was always a thrilling excitement for me.Although I've enjoyed my share of cars, the paperwork process I've had to endure to enjoy those pleasures felt excruciating.I don't know what exciting vehicle lingers in my future. As long as it excites me like the Honda, gives me the comfort of the Explorer, and completes me like the Mazda, it'll be a winner in my eyes.

Order your Why would a succesful american playwrite choose to write such a work as Oleanna paper at affordable prices !Why would a successful American male playwright decide to write such a work as Oleanna?

"In every scene some moral let it teach, and if it can at once both please and preach" (Pope)

Oleanna, by leading American playwright 'David Mamet', is predominantly a satirical work that focuses largely on satirising principal issues of the time; political correctness and sexual harassment.

Oleanna was written at a time when sexual harassment was probably the most incendiary issue around along with ever present political correctness.Mamet's aim would seem to be to produce a satirical work of two issues, then, currently under great discussion and debate. The majority of Mamet's plays concentrate greatly on stressing controversial topics of the time through a masculine world of petty crooks, con men, seedy salesmen and the like. For example American Buffalo, set in a Chicago junk shop, the characters in this play are small time crooks who are planning to steal a collection of valuable coins. This play highlights the need for individuals to be accepted.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Why would a succesful american playwrite choose to write such a work as Oleanna

"Mamet divides critical opinion between those who admire him for his uncompromising representation of the underbelly of American society and those who think him a sensationalist, intent, above all, on shocking audiences."

Mamet's prevalent aim with Oleanna is to provoke the audience into thinking and concluding their own meaning from the play.

Satire within the play can be split into different areas the two largest and most obvious areas being the aforementioned sexual harassment and political correctness. These areas can be easily subdivided as under these headings there is the opportunity to concentrate on the many satirical aspects of the play.

At the very beginning of the play we immediately see Carols' intelligence being questioned when she does not understand anything that John says to her.The first words that she speaks are asking a question, 'What is a term of art?'By doing this Mamet also highlights issues such as class discrimination. Is Carol seen as 'stupid' and can she not understand him because she is of a lower social background than John, does he talk down to her because he his aware that she is of a lower class and wishes to make her feel inferior?

American theatre is largely male dominated and plays presented are often written by male writers. This 'gender bias' has important implications for the perspective from which we view these plays.Feminist critics believe that many male writers represent a male world in which female characters and concerns are either sidelined or distorted. We should be aware of how the male perspective influences the way in which we read Oleanna.

The heart of the play is our own perception of Mamet's words, do we like carol take some of his meanings as sexual advances, do we see it as harassment? Can we pick out the absurd level of political correctness that is obviously needed to make it crystal clear what John is really trying to say? To understand the true satire within the play we must be able to distinguish satire from other kinds of comical devices or techniques within the play. The reader needs more intelligence than Carol to understand and observe the flexibility of tone wit and irony. The reader must constantly be alert to understand the actual and literal meanings of what is said, they must make connections between the text and personal experiences and only then will they understand the true meanings of the text.

In "Ethan Frome" by Edith Wharton there are many forms of symbolism. Some of which are the pickle dish, the missing "L" on the house, the gravestone bearing Ethan's name, and the name Starkfield.

The first example of symbolism is the pickle dish breaking.

"The cat, profiting by this unusual demonstration,

Help with essay on symbolism in Ethan Frome

tried to effect an unnoticed retreat, and in doing

so backed into the pickle dish, which fell to the floor

with a crash.Mattie, in an instant, had sprung from

her chair and was down on her knees by the fragments.

'Oh Ethan, EthanIt's all to pieces! What will Zeena Say?'

…She lifted stricken eyes to him. 'Yes, but, you see, she never

meant it should be used, not even when there was company;

and I had to get up on the step-ladder to reach it down from

the top shelf of the china closet, where she keeps it with all

her best things, and of course she'll want to know why

I did it---'The case was so serious that it called forth all

of Ethan's latent resolution. 'She needn't know anything

if you keep quiet. I'll get another just like it to-morrow.

Where did it come from? I'll go to Shadd's Falls for it if

I have to!' … She began to cry, and he felt as if every

one of her tears were pouring over him like burning

lead. (p. 6-6)

The pickle dish symbolizes Ethan's love for Mattie.

The second example of symbolism is the missing "l".

"The house was bigger in my father's time I had to

take down the 'l' a while back,' Frome continued,

checking with a twitch of the left rein the bay's evident

intention of turning in through the broken down gate.

I saw then that the unusually forlorn and stunted look

of the house was partly due to the loss of what is known

in New England as the 'l' that long deep-roofed adjunct

usually built at right angles to the main house, and

connecting it, by way of storerooms and tool-house, with

the wood-shed and cow barn. (p.15)

The missing "l" symbolizes Ethan's life being connected with the soil.

The third example of symbolism is the gravestone that bears Ethan's name.

"He passed by the graves on the knoll and turned

his head to glance at one of the older headstones,

which had interested him deeply as a boy because

it bore his name SACRED TO THE MEMORY

OF ETHAN FROME AND ENDURANCE HIS

WIFE, WHO DWELLED TOGETHER IN PEACE

FOR FIFTY YEARS.He used to think that 50

years sounded like a long time to live together, but

now it seemed to him that they might pass in a flash.

Then, with a sudden dart of irony, he wondered if,

when their turn came, the same epitaph would be

written over him and Zeena." (p. 5)

The gravestone bearing Ethan's name symbolizes what is to come like when Ethan and Mattie crash into the elm tree and they are supposed to die.

The fourth example of symbolism is the name Starkfield.

"During the early part of my stay I had been struck

by the contrast between the vitality of the climate

and the deadness of the community. Day by day,

after the December snows were over, a blazing blue

sky poured down torrents of light and air on the

white landscape, which gave them back in an

intense glitter. One would have supposed that

such an atmosphere must quicken the emotions

as well as the blood; but it seemed to produce no

change except that of retarding still more the sluggish

pulse of Starkfield. When I had been there a little

longer, and had seen this phase of crystal clearness

followed by long followed by long stretches of sunless

cold; when the storms of February had pitched their white

tents about the devoted village and the wild cavalry of

March winds had charged down to their support; I began

to understand why Starkfield emerged from its 6 Months'

siege like a starved garrison capitulating without quarter." (p.7)

Starkfield is harsh, desolate, and barren which makes it a hard place to spend a winter. The landscapes in Starkfield are described as lonely, gloomy, or silent. The characters moods often change along with changes in the weather.

Contrary to popular beliefs, America was not discovered in 14 by Christopher Columbus, nor was it discovered by the pilgrims in 160. It was actually discovered millenniumsbefore either of those voyages. The first native Americans are believed to have crossed the Berring Strait somewhere around 40,000 B.C.They were a proud people who were well in touch with their natural surroundings, never hunting for sport or leaving anything of there prey to waste.

The Subarctic was a region that horizontally spanned across the entire continent of North America and vertically covered a large portion of what is today known as Canada. In the Subarctic, life revolved around getting food.Tribes such as the Beavers, Kaskas, Hans, and Tananas were nomadic hunters, fishers, and forgers who got around on foot. The Subarctic cultures generally used wood, bone, horn, and antlers as utensils more frequently than stone. For ropes and cloth the used raw hide and root fiber. They mainly hunted moose, caribou, oxen, bear, and elk.

The Eastern Woodland region spanned across the current day Eastern U.S. and Canada. The region contained a moderate climate and had great amounts of rainfall. Some of the tribes that inhabited the habitat were the Iroquois, Eries, Hurons, and Shawnees. A number of the tribes there were Algonkian speaking the people. Most of the tribes operated in the same way. There was a class system, strikingly similar to some thing that you would see in Europe, that consisted of a chief, his family, nobility and commoners.Quite unlike the nomads of the Subarctic, the inhabitants of the Eastern Woodlands were Deer hunters and farmers. These tribes were very hostile and entered into many conflicts over things such as teritorial rights, male coming of age rituals, or retaliation to a prior attack .

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Early Native American Life

The Great Basin was a vast span of arid desert that lay between the ridges of the Rockies and the Sierra Mountain ranges. The winters were hot and the summers were frigidly cold.Tribes of this area were the Shoshones, the Utes, the Flatheads, and Washos.Due to the fact that there were few animals in the area, the tribes that inhabited it were forced to survive by the means of nuts and seeds that they wandered around searching for and collecting. They ate the sweet nuts of the pinon tree and seeds of the pigweed and primose plants. They had to stay on the move, constantly searching for food because of its scarcity. On average each family had at least three camps per year.

Quite unlike the dry desert terrain of the Great Basin, the Plateau, located in northwestern U.S. and in southwest Canada, was riddled with mountains covered in lush evergreen forests. This area was in habited by the Shuswaps, Thompsons, Yakimas, and the Nez Perces.Alifestyle similar to people of the Great Basin was present on the Plateau, but it was enhanced by annual runs of salmon up the Columbia River, other rivers and tributaries. The Plateau natives also had to move a lot; they traveled on foot while dogs pulled their goods. Where there were lakes, they found other fish, ducks and mud hens. In the meadows, they pulled up camas, edible bulbs, and other nutrient-rich roots. They dried salmon and camas for winter consumption.People lived in villages made of partly sunken circular dwellings in the cold months and camped in grass mat houses in the warm months. Market villages existed where travelers from the Plains and the Pacific Coast congregated, purchased dried food and bartered for other items.

Throughout William Shakespeare's Hamlet, readers experience an array of rhetorical devices meant to convey emotion, tone, and attitude. In Act I, Scene II, lines 1-158, the reader is introduced to Hamlet's first important soliloquy.Hamlet speaks unveils his speech after enduring an unpleasant scene at the court of Claudius and Gertrude, later being asked by his mother and new stepfather not to return to his studies at Wittenberg but to remain in Denmark, presumably against his wishes. Through diction and imagery, Hamlet expresses his disgust and painful sorrow about his father's death and this mother's quick remarriage.

Through the use of diction, Hamlet displays his tone of painful sorrow and intense disgust. Hamlet thinks for the first time about suicide. Desiring his flesh to melt, wishing that God had not made self-slaughter a sin, and saying that the world is weary, stale, flat, and unprofitable. In other words, suicide seems like a desirable alternative to life in a painful world, but Hamlet feels that the option of suicide is closed to him because it is forbidden by religion. In the jaded mind of Hamlet, only an unwilling bloody massacre is an escape from a world gone worthless. His diction reflect his painful sorrow, using ironically lively langue verses commonly used words with the same meaning. Hamlet goes on to express his intense disgust with his "unrighteous" mother's "wicked", "incestuous" remarriage. Believing that her once righteous and true loving self has become the victim of lust for his brother, he begins to condemn her with spiritual related diction. Her remarriage is viewed as a sin and the out-most wrong by Hamlet. He obviously feels as though the marriage was not only hasty, but improper.

To further emphasis his sorrow and disgust, Hamlet intergrades various metaphors and similes in the soliloquy to better enhance his own reasoning. As he reflects on the Queens previous state of morning and her present actions, Hamlet creates a strong contrastusing a simile in, "Like Niobe, all tears- why she, even she/ (O God! A beat that wants discourse of reason/ would have mourn'd longer) married with my uncle." Here, an evident contrast between Niobe, a character from a Greek tragedy which reflected Gertrude's morning and her newly changed attitude in marrying her departed husband's brother is made. The act disgusts Hamlet as he implies that even a beast who wants discourse would have grieved longer than his mother had, who had claimed to love the Great Dane so dearly. To outwardly prove the corruption of the marriage, Hamlet refers to a metaphor for the state of Denmark in, "Fie on't! ah, fie! 'Tis an unweeded garden/ That grows to seed; things rank and gross in nature/ Possess it merely. That it should come to this!" Here, Hamlet implies that like a disease, the vile seeds of corruption spread quickly through the people and the ominous omen the marriage represents for Denmark. The state of Denmark will be perpetuated into corruption through the stained court's own actions. Claudius and Gertrude's union is the foundation of the taint that will seep down from them to the people.

In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Act I, Scene II, lines 1-158, Hamlet uses an array of rhetorical devices meant to convey his disgust and painful sorrow about his father's death and this mother's quick remarriage. Hamlet achieves the purpose of conveying his belief that the marriage between Claudius and Gertrude is not nor it cannot come to good," through his skillful use of diction and imagery. Order your Discuss John Donne's religious poetry paper at affordable prices !Donne's overall work consisted largely of Love Poetry such as The Sunne Rising and Religious Poetry such as Good Friday 161. Riding Westward. These two poems also consist of various techniques that are also utilised in other works of Donne. Through these recurring techniques and constant themes of love and religiousness seen in Donne's body of work, we see how the poems The Sunne Rising and Good Friday 161. Riding Westward are representative of Donnes overall.

Personal tone is used in Donnes love poetry, which enhances the dramatic quality of Donnes poetry and allows Donne to speak directly to the audience. It is seen in the Sunne Rising throughout the poem where there is a dominant sense of the poet "I could eclipse and cloud them with a wink." The personal tone is also utilised in another of Donnes romantic poems, Loves Alchymie, where authority is gained though the use of 'I' "I have lov'd…"

In Valediction Forbidding Mourning, Donne compares natural phenomena to a love relationship, the "sigh tempests" relating to the element of air, and the "tear floods" to the element of water. He uses this hyperbole to demand that his lover remain stoic and resist any show of emotion upon his departure. Similarly in Sunne "I could eclipse and cloud them" juxtaposed with "with a winke" adds to the conceit in this poem.

Alliteration is employed in The Sunne Rising through the line "Thou Sunne art halfe as happy 'as wee". This is done to give the statement a snide tone, which could almost be seen as mocking. Alliteration such as "bracelet of bright hair" is used to a different effect in the poem The Relique, where it helps to maintain the visual impact of the imaginery scene being described.

As in Donnes love poetry, personal tone is also used in his religious poetry. In Good Friday 161. Riding Westward the personal tone is put into use to add authority to the piece and "…where I begunne." Personal tone is largely evident in another of Donnes religious poems, A Hymne to God the Father, where the poem is concluded with the line 'I have no more."

Metaphor is another technique used in Donnes religious and overall work. Hymn to God, My God, in My Sickness the controlling metaphor for the poemthe human body as a mapand the physicians have therefore become map-readers. In Good Friday the metaphorical connection comes from the stressing between the physical and spiritual which links God's death to the setting sun. In this sense the crucifixion becomes the microcosm of the world.

In Donnes Holy Sonnet XIV the relationship between the image and the subject is of great importance, Donne exploits the technique of paradox in order to successfully show the great importance "Except you enthral me, never shall I be free, Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me." The paradoxical notion that God who is 'selfe life, must dye' is explored through emotive imagery in Good Friday, which highlights that witnessing such a death made 'his footstoole crack, and the Sunne winke".

In the 150s, at the time when John Donne produced his Songs and Sonnets, the Petrarchan tradition had already had several centuries of undeniable rule over amorous poetry and literature in general. Donne probably thought this rule should come to an end, for his sonnets rudely, and even cynically changed the concepts concerning love and women. His love poetry is best valued when compared to the very strong at the time Petrarchan concept. The most scandalous of his ideas is probably how he viewed women.

All in all, John Donne managed to step aside from a centuries old tradition in literature that went on even throughout his lifetime. Namely his audacity to violate the conventions, to try something new made a very special place for his works in the English renaissance. Not only that; to a great extent he foretold the upcoming women's struggle against sexism and more of less set the ground for breaking the rules of the Petrarchan tradition.

Order your team development paper at affordable prices with Live Paper Help!We had sensed for some time that something was wrongsite-based management had not been delivering the goods. We formed leadership teams; they met; we shared decision makingbut teaching and learning didnt change. Perhaps too much had been expected from simply the transfer of power, suggest Priscilla Wohlstetter and Susan Albers Mohrman, who have written an extensive study looking at the outcomes of sharing decision making in schools. The idea always was to improve education for kids; but instead what seemed to have happened in many places was that there was another meeting to attend and nothing much else was new. Is the theory flawed? Is the current wave of decentralization just another swing of the pendulum? ask these authors, whose study of practice looked at thirty schools in nine school districts, each of which had at least four years experience with school-based management.

We were asking ourselves the same questions. As principals of alternative high schools in New York City, we each had been deeply involved in school reform for over fifteen years. Each of our schools struggled incessantly with group management at Satellite Academy High School and consensus-based decision making at University Heights High School. During this time, our own experiences and observations, combined with those shared in professional development opportunities with colleagues in other New York schools and around the country, helped us learn a number of valuable lessons. AUDIO CLIP

Nancy Mohr on Why we wrote this article

We saw for ourselves the tremendous power that can be generated within a school when the professional staff genuinely experiences a sense of ownership. But we learned that adult empowerment, for its own sake, is too limited a goal. We found that adult ownership, while necessary, does not in and of itself make learning more powerful for students. We learned how to get beyond ownership as a goal and how to develop professional communities of learners, focused on teaching and learning, that are able to take advantage of the multiple perspectives a community can offer.

Our conclusions, based on hands-on experience, are supported and illuminated by research findings in recent literature. Michael Fullan (1) cites several studies of site-based-management projects, none of which found evidence of a strong connection between shared decision making per se and student learning. The point is not that participation in decision making is a bad thing, Fullan cautions, but that it is not focusing on the right thingsthe cultural core of curriculum and instruction. Participation may be necessary in order to build the habits of collaboration, which are essential, but it is not sufficient for improving student outcomes.

Robert Evans (16) explores the kinds of shared decision making that do create a link between adult empowerment, student learning, and leader behavior. Teachers who are empowered to make decisions about their school will structure their classrooms to empower students in the learning process, encouraging students to take greater responsibility for their own education, he asserts. A key point ... is that empowerments true target is not teachers or any other constituency, but the school. ... To achieve it requires an authentic leader to take the primary role in both shaping the framework and nurturing the capacity of others to help shape it.

Fred Newmann and Gary Wehlage (15) show that higher student achievement has been directly linked to the building of professional communitiesgroups of educators who regularly meet to discuss each others work and to learn from each other about ways to improve teaching and learning. Newmanns work on authentic learning (16) points out why some schools in his study had higher student achievement than others. In addition to focusing on student learning, the achieving schools nurtured professional community inside the school and understood that the promotion of intellectual quality and professional community depended on a complex interaction of cultural and structural conditions.

The central figure in Fifth of July is Ken Talley, a Vietnam Vet whose legs were blown off in battle.Ken was an anti-war activist in the '60's who, for reasons even he hasn't understood, enlisted in the Army.Ken is a man who doesn't get involved; as his sister June tells him during the play, "You have 80 different ways of not getting involved".Ken answers, "Only 6 or 7."Ken lives on the Talley farm that he inherited; he lives with his botanist lover, Jed.It is the Independence Day weekend and Ken's old activist friends from the 60's, Gwen and John, along with their composer friend, Wes, have come from L.A. to join them for the weekend.Gwen is a neurotic rich girl who inherited her Daddy's business and is more interested in launching a singing career than attending to the family business.John, her husband, is a crafty, slick business manager who is negotiating deals behind his wife's back and is the prototype of what would be called a "Yuppie" within a few short years. Also down for the weekend is Ken's Sister June, a disillusioned activist of the 60's as well, and her daughter Shirley, a smart, self-possessed, perhaps precocious, child of thirteen who has dreams of becoming the greatest artist to come out of the mid west.Exactly what kind of artist doesn't matter, as long as she is in "the arts".The final character of the play is Sally Talley, Ken's aunt who has returned to her childhood farm to scatter the ashes of her late husband, Matt Friedman.Sally was the black sheep of her family and further distanced herself from her family by marrying Matt, a Jew.For a girl from a southern family in the 140's, "this was not done."

The complications of the characters begin to unfold as we find out that Gwen and John have come down not only to visit Ken but to make him an offer to buy his farm and convert it into a recording studio for Gwen.Ken is open to the idea as he has his own plans of running away from a teaching job he has been offered because, he knows, the students will look at him funny.Jed, of course, has no knowledge of Ken's plans and continues to nurture the garden and lay down roots which will be fully matured and realized in 0 years. June has come to the farm with ideas of her own.She wants to see John whom we believe is the real father of Shirley. What Lanford Wilson has done is to create a commentary on the Vietnam War era of the 60's and the disillusionment, and the disappointment that followed in the post war years.During the war years, there grew a generation with a noble cause.A generation that understood that the war was wrong, and that it was immoral. This rallying of the generation created an amazing energy and openness to all that was good. But when the war came to an end, the generation was left with no cause, no rallying point, only rhetoric. The rhetoric seemed only to be built around the war, and without a war a new cause was needed. The desperation led to a cause du jour. Soon the generation realized there were no causes left, and all the good seemed to depend upon all that was bad.Disappointment and disillusionment led many of the generation to go from Hippies, to Yuppies, to Enron Executives. But for all those of the generation who truly felt what they believed, they were left feeling betrayed.

The Fifth of July is the day after the fireworks. The fireworks of the 60's ended and the 'morning after' had begun. How these people deal with that reality is what Wilson is exploring.Wilson confronts us as Ken confronts Wes at one point in the play.Wes tells a story of Eskimos who were starving to death living in an igloo and had frozen Caribou meat outside but no way of thawing it out.One heroic Eskimo went outside and produced a tremendous fart which thawed out the meat. The Eskimos are too repulsed to eat the meat and die of starvation.Ken screams at Wes that this was not heroic on the Eskimos part, it was stupid. They allowed themselves to die rather than "eat the fart-thawed meat and live."This is what Wilson is saying, release the past, forget the shattered dreams and involve yourself in the future. In the end of the play, this is the lesson that Ken learns; his future awaits him and he goes out to meet it.
